    • @-Yurkey
      @-Yurkey Рік тому +9

@@nells9012actually that was common practice, even other captains agreed at the time... Ships back then had an edged bow which was extremely tough so they could theoretically cut smaller icebergs in half or the bow would compress like a car in an accident in case of a huge iceberg, so older captains practiced full steam ahead... Smith would've most likley rammed the ice berg but he wasn't on the bridge when the iceberg was spotted. First officer Murdoch didn't order to ram the iceberg, he ordered to slalom around the berg hitting it with the weakest part of the ship, the side, where a huge gash flooded more than the allowed 4 watertight compartments. Captain Smith was a great escape goat, while the real criminals were (the designers) because they opted for artistic charm instead of of having an adequate number of lifeboats. Captain Smith did what was expected of Captains back then, he went down with the ship. Not many would do that honor nowadays, look at Costa Concordia...

Very poetic scene, and I loved how Cameron did it. But I’m convinced he died in the water overboard. The wireless operator who survived, put in his diary that he saw the captain swimming and place a child on his lifeboat and swim back towards the ship.
Another passenger saw the captain and Andrew’s watching the water rising over the bow and say something to the effect of “not much longer now, let’s go” and both jumped. That was after Andrew’s was seen in the smoking parlor by the clock.

That one had the story of the wireless operator that by all means could be a bit dubious because it was a freaking mess that night. But , I know Bride died in the sinking, the second escapes me, but either way they knew the captain well. So there’s that…
The second part I saw on a video from “history travels”. A video posted about a year ago. Smart kid, constantly putting stuff out there. He gives a full witness account about what may have happened to Andrew’s. A good point to remember that I didn’t know, the last man to see him staring at the clock got on a lifeboat after. So timing wise, Andrew’s would have been in there the entire sinking. Not very likely. So the second account I think has merit.

Anyway, you probably already knew that. The longest theory of his passing was that he died in the first class smoking parlor. Because an eye witness saw him there in a daze setting the clock on the mantle. That’s where he is portrayed last being in titanic and a night to remember. There is another witness though, who claims to suggest that Andrew’s snapped out of it and started helping officers with last remaining boats and was seen with captain smith watching the water rise up over the wheel house. The then both jumped overboard. The point being made was that he may have been seen with the captain.

I really like the old standard amongst sailors that the captain is last to abandon ship and that all life must be saved before theirs. It really puts emphasis on getting people to safety and making sure that every life is accounted for and safe. The same cannot be said for a few horrible disasters in the past few decades... In fact, in just the past decade and a few years alone has seen way too many tragedies like this...

He did end up surviving the sinking by simply swimming off the ship in its final moments. He was rescued after spending several hours afloat in the sea. The aftermath and investigation of the sinking was very messy and filled with corruption, and during this Captain Turner was brought on many charges, some accusing him of being involved with planning the attack from the u-boat. He was cleared of all charges but retired, forever haunted by the sinking and the accusations against him.

1.He failed to slow down and ran at full speed in the pitch black. That decision alone was massively negligent.
      2. He ignored iceberg warnings throughout the day. Including one from a near by ship that had stopped due to the danger.
3.After spotting the iceberg, First Officer William Murdoch ordered the ship to turn to starboard (right) and attempted to avoid the iceberg by executing a maneuver known as "hard-a-starboard." However, it is believed that Captain Smith countermanded this order and instead instructed the ship to continue on its original course, believing that the ship would be able to clear the iceberg. This decision proved to be disastrous.
      4. Life boat drillsy. Lifeboats launching woefully under capacity.
He caused the crash, sank the titanic and went down with his ship.

Idk how a person can let himself drown willingly it takes a whole lot of guts for that, full respects to the captain ❤

Because the experienced seamen knew they had very little chance of survival in the frigid temperatures of the water of ever getting rescued. Many chose to go down with the ship and die quickly versus suffer a longer and slower death.

    I like the 1958 version.
that looks more hauntingly in black & white.

I have heard reports that not only was capitan Smith was by the bridge at this point but Thomas Andrews (chief designer for titanic) was with him as well. And some of them said (to my understanding) that they heard Andrews tell capitan Smith, "she's going down there's no use in staying on anymore " or something similar to that. Before both of them start to swim away from the titanic never to be seen "alive" again

Captain smith one of the best ship captains in the world he known that he was the captain and he loved the ship so he died with it

I don't think that it was his love for the ship. It was rather that he believed that captain is the last to leave the ship. Since a lot of people still were on board of Titanic, he just refused to leave it.

Maybe because he knew that is was also his own fault, because he told to speed up the ship even with an Iceberg warning and he felt guilty.
