Everything came together on this one. Not just the pilots. The people who ran to the door and opened it. Nobody ran over each other, knocking each other out. Just amazing.
Sorry there was just only one Person flyn the plane. The People you are thinking are awesome was only able to do so cuz of the pilot. If the Pilot fucked up there would be NO ONE TO DO ANY THING OTHER THAN DIE.
with out the skills of the pilot they would of all been dead.
The pilot himself gave credit to his crew as well. It was a team effort, with everyone doing their part. Yes, the pilot executed a perfect water landing, but what if he had collided with one of the boats on the river? What if he hadn't had the necessary time to avoid clipping the George Washington Bridge? Those two events were out of his control.
Thearmorcav I think you will find 2 people fly a plane the pilot and first officer
Thearmorcav and you may find flyn is spelt flying
They can be thankful those two pilots had great training, didn't panic, and had an alternative solution. It was the key to their success.
Nor the flight crew. Those ladies kept their calm and giving instructions to their passengers.
Capt. Sully also was the last person off the plane. He insisted on wading through that icy cold water in the cabin checking to see if anyone hadn't gotten out.
I would like the comment because it’s true, but it has to stay that number
pilots don't get training for water landings they only read a few books about it but there is no practacing

*These passengers survived because their Captain was a former U.S. Navy fighter pilot. Those guys are trained to perfection. They'd rather die than lose their plane. Thank you Captain Sully for your service! God bless you and your family.*
He was a US Air Force fighter pilot, not US Navy.
Plus, as a hobby he liked to fly glider planes. So that gave him an additional skill set. He and Skyles were amazing. The passengers survived because of them.
@silverhawkflash There have been many military officers who've had training and experience in both the Navy and the Air Force. In fact there is the Naval Air Force, and this may've been where the captain of that flight had his background. He was an Air Force fighter pilot, but he also knew just what to do in a situation involving an impact in the water. It's always better for a pilot to have both Air Force and Navy training, considering there always being the possibility of an aircraft crashing into the ocean or a lake or river

I’ve been in an “Mayday” landing - 2004, Air Canada, Toronto to Manchester, NH. 18 passengers, no flight attendant (he did the safety bit and then became the copilot). It was the same sense of having 17 new best friends. Hope you never need to know, but you get 12 minutes of O2 when they drop the masks. If the plane is full of smoke that’s not going to do it. We used any bottled water we had and wet scarfs, etc. there was no panic. It was at night and seeing that one brightly lit runway made it very real, especially when we realized the number of lights that were actually emergency vehicles that all pull in behind you down the runway like a parade. I never found out what went wrong and was burning - they had us off and away from the plane in seconds. Yes. I still fly. No. Not Air Canada.
There was only a "Karen" who tried to open the wrong door in the back and almost got the whole plane flooded a lot sooner.
It's like the people on United flight 93. They were all strangers but after hearing what happened to the other planes and what the possible intended target was for their plane they banded together knowing they most likely wouldn't make it out alive but they got together and tried to do what they could to prevent their plane from reaching its intended target..
I’m pregnant with my first baby, a son. We are naming him Sullivan, but Sully will be his nickname. Chosen only because of this amazing story, who better to be named after than a true hero!

They put this plane in the museum in charlotte NC, i went there when i was 9, everyone was bored and wanted to go home, the entire time a documentary was playing on a mini TV nearby and i learned so much that day!
The captain was obviously trained by Yoda. There are very few force users able to lift an entire aircraft out of the water like that.
did you know that air floats. And the aircraft was filled with air.
In all seriousness, the reason why they survived was that the captain did air gliding in his free time so he knew how to glide the plane without engines resulting in a safe landing.
Wow. I didn't know they still have the high and low pressure air divided even when the plane is on the water.
They had what they call buoyancy provided by the VOLUME of the front cabin which DISPLACED the water and lifted up the nose. The pilot did fine as many others did, but he was lucky to have that buoyancy in front to lift him up and stop the plane from flipping over or digging down into the water

Captain Sully is the *_MAN_* Landing an aircraft, at that speed, on water? Quasi-concrete at those speeds? Unbelievable ...
Also a lot of respect to the engineers at Airbus for implementing fly by wire as first commercial airliner manufacturer in the A320 and thus enabling full envelope protection.
Actually, the full envelope protection engineered into the A320's control algorithm prevented Capt, Sullenburger from getting the aircraft to the absolute minimum speed, which would have been the stall speed at the configuration they had, prior to impact. Ironic, but true!
Maybe I am wrong, but in a swept wing design as found in most airliners it is pretty hard to maintain control over the aircraft once it reached its stall speed, not to mention the tendency to tip stall and then roll as an effect of it. Thus at low altitude its a point of no return/recovery. The Envelope Protection/Alpha Protection kicks in and prevents the pilot from making a bad situation even worse by misjudging the height or speed above the water. In this situation it was a small compromise to impact at α-prot while its crucial to maintaining full responsiveness over all control surfaces, allowing for a stable approach.
While I respect Capt. Sully for his excellent flying feat I do not consider his effort an act of heroism or superman type of performance. Any commercial airline pilot with the proper training and experience would have done the same thing. Please stop overpraising this guy, it's just a little bit too much.

I drove Uber in Charlotte and I picked up one of those passengers just last year. He still has PTSD from that incident. The crazy thing is that he told me he jumped from a plane 7 years later. He’s still good friends with the pilot as well. I couldn’t believe he was up there.
I can imagine that he had PTSD after being in that incident. But imagine a passenger who was a survivor of, for example, that United airlines crash landing about 20 years ago where the plane landed on the wrong angle and the aircraft partially split in two while half of the aircraft burst into flames with most of those passengers perishing while the other half had some survivors although many of them badly injured with serious burns. Imagine the PTSD if one of those survivors. As for the ones who did die, I just hope it was instant with no agony or suffering. And I think it was because if you're in the center of a big explosion, it's usually instantaneous. To me, dying in an suffering agonizing way is much scarier than death itself
Imagine just chilling on the ferry making your way to work and then you’re suddenly diverted to a rescue mission because a plane landed in the river beside you

I saw the Tom Hanks film about this crash landing last night, and I rate it a 7 out of 10. The part where the cabin attendants shout in unison: "Heads down, stay down, brace, brace, brace," really gave me the heebie-jeepies.
There were a lot of things the film didn't have time to touch on. For example, no mention was made of the fact that the captain was an experienced glider pilot. Apparently this was part of the reason he was able to execute a perfect crash landing in the water.
Supposedly most pilots that attempted this maneuver in a simulator ended up crashing the airplane. A lot of factors combined to give this story a happy ending, such as clearing the George Washington Bridge, and not colliding with any of the boats on the river.
Amazingly, some of the passengers on this flight boarded other planes later in the day to continue on with their travel plans. Yikes, talk about raw courage. Had I been on that plane, I don't think I would have gotten on another aircraft again... ever... Period! Lol.

Not many boats in the hudson during the winter, Only tankers and Ferries really.
The fact that they came to a stop right by not one but two ferry terminals on either bank was a major factor as well. The ferries sprung into action as soon as they saw the plane splashdown and were pulling up to the wings within a just few minutes. Can't ask for positioning and timing than that.

Man I can't even imagine. You're hustling to the airport, to get to your gate and board your plane on time. You're relieved to finally board, ready to settle in for a routine flight, knowing you can sort of unwind and relax for the next few hours. Wheels up, right as you start to zone you, your climb to cruising altitude is abruptly interrupted. You go from comfortable to freezing and panicked in a moment's notice. It's just a blessing that these pilots were calm and experienced, and everyone was calm enough to execute an evacuation.
This is why I'm terrified of planes.
Edit: y'all in the comments are scaring me...
Fun fact flying in a plane is the safest transport option! It’s even more safer then a car, boat and train!
I'maUnicorn Forever! The chance of crashing in a plane is lower than a car
I'maUnicorn Forever! The chances of this happening to you are very low because you hardly hear of things like this happening
But when it does happen death is almost certain
@@rafael.o7o So...? You are at least 23 times as likely to die in a car crash than in an airplane crash.
Arms wrapped around the legs? wtf kind of brace position is that.
More of a neck break position even if they had belts on.
That is the whole point. The positions are never meant to keep you safe. They are made to instantly kill you if you crashm
@@blueberryvixen Screw off with your bullshit conspriracys.
@@TommyTom21 it's actually true so stfu.
I heard somewhere that it was actually meant to kill you instantly, since you know if you survive you might want to sue the airline, perhaps?
you guys are all wrong they did a study with dummies and the dummies that were in that position didnt get any significant damage plus in another accident one and only survivor (a kid) was alive due to following such instructions
All pilots should go through a test to land on water
That would ruin an awful lot of airplanes.
Mike M simulations dummy
AHellReign they do
AHellReign hopefull they will make the a law soon
That would be expensive....
This is not miracle, this is result of hard work and team work. Great job

Me too.
Kobe didn't die in a helicopter crash...one of the sloppiest coverups ever.
@@small_ed What would be the motive?
@@small_ed how did he die then?
@@small_ed true me bro. I got freemasons in my family, he did die in that crash. He wouldn't fake his death along side with his 13 year old daughter. She won't wanna keep hiding the rest of her life bro she's to young. But what i will say is, all thoes other people weren't supposed to die with him. Kobe AMWAYS took a helicopter Solo everywhere he went. But they couldn't find another chance to do it.. Key WORD... (They) but im not gonna say too much
Every aviator has this incident in their head permanently. No pilot or crew member can forget the uneventful takeoff, and the horrifying sight of both engines not spinning. The pilots weren’t trained for this type of emergency, but by a miracle they made it out alive.

Yep, hi from Australia. Thanks to all who donated towards the bushfires appeal. Love you all 👍♥️

Who's here in 2020?? Really???????
I remember when this was on the news. We were all amazed at seeing a plane floating in the river! It was awesome to see.
Thanks for sharing 🎉
I went and saw Sully the movie and it was great I loved it!!! So now I'm really interested in watching videos about this LMAO

I don't remember anyone saying anywhere that it was funny....
Well she isn't talking about the crash was funny, now that she watched the movie she is more interested in the event that's what she links is funny

Shyla jones hi
The movie: Sully with Tom Hanks was gripping viewing. Absolutely amazing. Sully's timing and precision was all due to his expertise landing aircrafts in the navy. 👏👏👏

Too bad most of the script was a lie to make it look like the government was blaming Sully.
@@waynerethmel6900 what? You realize all branches of the military have pilots right?

Unfortunately, they went down faster than Cactus 1549.
Captain Sully and his quick thinking saved all 150 passengers I applause his heroism and quick thinking 👏👏👏👏
Please stop calling this a "miracle". It was damn good flying and great decision making. A "miracle" would have been if all those geese had passed through the engines and not caused any damage.
Don't be an idiot and take the word "miracle" literally. It's miracle because the chances of surviving something like this incident are wild. It's a miracle because the last aviation involved incident in NYC had the complete opposite result. Stop being so offended by word usage because you like to take things too literally. You'll also do well to know that the English language contains words that have multiple meanings, miracle is one of them: a highly improbable or extraordinary event, development, or accomplishment that brings very welcome consequences.
That is EXACTLY what this was.
"A miracle is an event not explicable by natural or scientific laws.[1] Such an event may be attributed to a supernatural being (a deity), magic, a miracle worker, a saint or a religious leader." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle
That's what a miracle is.
I will repeat myself: IN the English language there are words that have MORE than one meaning. That is one meaning, yes, but the other was what I had stated and this sense, they used the denotation I provided. You're wrong.
Saying something over and over (repeating yourself) doesn't make it true.
The problem with calling something a "miracle" is that it devalues the human effort required to achieve the objective (in this case, safely landing a disabled airplane in the Hudson River). People read "miracle" and they assume either divine influence or extreme good luck was involved...when the fact is it was Sully's incredible flying skill and cool head that did it.
Denying me over and over again doesn't prove YOUR point because your opinion of it is just a bad opinion. I provided you the denotation of the word it. In this sense it denotes an amazing event that was very unlikely to be possible. Accept it. YOU think it devalues his amazing flying ability but NO ONE else does.
Applaud to Pilot and First officer, World needs smart and responsible pilots like them🙂
Do you ever start reading a comment thinking it's going to be really interesting and halfway through you realise it was a complete waste of time ?

yep, I just replied to one right now.
tell me all about it, i come across those all the time, but what i hate most are replies by attention seeking morons who don't know what they are talking about.
I never get tired of this amazing event! Outstanding pilots matter.
I am not surprised at all at the fact that the plane made a safe landing in the Hudson. for those that know a little about being a pilot. pilots are trained in every time of scenario when going thru the different levels of getting your pilot's license ratings. a person going for their private pilot license (your 1st pilot's license) will be trained in what to do if your plane loses power. when your plane loses all power it just becomes a big glider, it does NOT immediately fall out of the sky. if you lose power in one or more engines like (most) commercial planes have, as long as 1 is still working the plane can fly.
and the pilot has a sailplane license... so hes used to fly planes without engines..
obviously pilots get a class teaching them how to fly a plane with no engines after getting birdstruck by big ass birds
basically yes they do. pilots when going for their first license will have an instructor in the plane that will throttle the plane to idle, so the student will have to learn what to do when that happens. here is 1 rule that every pilot knows. "taking off is optional, landing is mandatory".
Ok yes even I know that I was typing that at 2 am but their main focus isn't landing planes in rivers
it kind of is in an emergency landing, land the plane on any long enough and flat surface to land it safely. if they were flying higher or had more speed when they hit the birds. they might have made it to new jersey or back to the airport but that wasn't the case. all commercial plane have what is called a ditch switch in which when activated will seal all of the planes openings allowing more time to get out of the plane. on that day the ditch switch was not activated.
The longer documentation about this crash was phenomenal! I highly recommend watching it!
Don’t forget that the crew (including Captain Sullenberger) continued to walk the aisle of the plane to its last moments in order to ensure everyone was out of the cabin!
I can’t believe its been 11 years since this happened
You can say that again
It's gonna turn 13 in January
God bless these pilots and passengers, for being very practical in a terrifying situation
Shoutout to the many rescuers that came, especially the first ones at the scene - ferrys and boats, controlled by their highly skilled captains and crews, which managed to maneuver in close to the sinking plane without hitting or damaging it, recovering many people and saving their lives.
Never forget this day, the day the skills and experience of a few saved the lives of many.
