I loved the singles Fashion and Ashes to Ashes when they came out, but it took many more years to appreciate the brilliance of the Scary Monsters album. Better late than never.
Agree. Think this track should have been a single.....maybe should have been released before Ashes to Ashes ...in other words the lead single from Scary Monsters.

"Psychodelicate Girl" more than rivals "I'm an Alligator". Fripp (Townshend), Bittan, and the DAM band more than rival The Spiders. "Ziggy" was a Character, The "C*nt in the Clown Suit" is all Bowie. Scary Monsters is about Authoritarianism in the world, and it's threat to free living. It is more timely today than when it came out. "Teenage Wildlife' is perhaps the most unique and honest pop song ever written; from the perspective of 2 David Bowie's. I've sold myself. 1st - Scary Monsters, 2nd - Ziggy Stardust. I've done the unthinkable, but did not get hit by lightening.
It took years to make the decision, but I finally consider Scary Monsters to be his best album. Every song is amazing and way ahead of it’s time. The guitar work by Fripp and Townsend add so much character to this stage of Bowie’s sound 🙌
It’s hard to me to choose his best album, but always considered “Scary monsters” one of them, because it was the result of all he learned doing the Eno trilogy, that makes it a really masterful album too.
I would rank "Station to Station" as his most fully realized masterpiece. But I do consider "Teenage Wildlife" to be the greatest song he ever composed.
This was my first Bowie album, late 1980. Sadly had to sell it later to make rent. I’m still coming back for more in 2021. The kids in the future will too
this album is so underrated in his catalogue, it's in my top 3 of his for sure! this song, the title track, Scream Like a Baby, and Ashes to Ashes are strong highlightssss
When I bought this album I was young, very young. Now in my fifties I can still appreciate the sentiment and genius of this brilliant song just as much now
i am in my 60'S OMG this was College for me. i met him in 1978 dressed like the cover of STATION TO STATION. Bowie signed my white glove.'' you look terribly smart'' is what he said to me. WOW Did my first year Art Thesis on him 24 mixed media pieces. Sang in a Bowie cover band in High School.. Then TIN MACHINE and i was done. i did not get it. NOW i am reliving it all over again. Better than ever. RIP my true Mentor. No one will ever be that cool again.
I say "Because You're Young" is one of the best bass rock tracks ever. George Murray's performance on the Scary Monsters album is one of the great rock bass recordings of all time. And since we are talking DAM band, Carlos Alomar interweaving with Robert Fripp and Pete Townshend throughout the entire album kind of verifies how amazing Carlos Alomar is.
The guitar is great, all the time, throughout the whole (less than 5 minutes long) song! Actually, that is one fo the things tham make this song a perfect one!
Me too, SO, SO much! "Scary Monsters" was my first intro to Bowie, apart from top-40 radio, and I was hooked. Brilliant album of an ever-evolving artist.
@@TylerDurden-oy2hm Not on this track. According to the credits it is indeed Pete Townshend. On a doco I heard he was pissed on this. If true he did alright. Robert Fripp didn't play on all the others either.
I've loved Bowie for around 25 years now, (First hearing 'Aladdin sane' at 16 or 17) and for some time I considered this my favourite Bowie album, it's bounced around my top 3 ever since. 'Because you're young' is one of many fantastic songs on this fantastic album. Pete Townshend on guitar - excellent. I love Bowie's vocals on the outro and the backing vocals that offer a counter melody to it...
The point is that the song has really universal meaning. To me, it is an excellent song which is a complex of great vocal, perfect instrumental and lyrics that covers different meanings, including the following (probably the simpliest explanation): Experienced man meets pretty nice young woman. Perfect match, but age difference and other things make the real relationship impossible. Since I have experienced that feelin, it's always sad when you know that in different circumstances it has very good chances to be a perfect relation, but...
“I guess I’ve adopted the role of a sort of old roué in that one, looking down on these two young mad things and knowing that it’s all gonna fizzle out. God, I’m a depressive person!” David Bowie on "Because you're young"
I loved the singles Fashion and Ashes to Ashes when they came out, but it took many more years to appreciate the brilliance of the Scary Monsters album. Better late than never.
i like to think Bowie was a little ahead in time , song i found weird during the 90s sounds great to day
Was in the same undecided boat on its arrival.
Not sure of the music when I first heard it except for the singles..
Its sounding much better today.
it is interesting how so many BOWIE SONGS that never got released are true gems.
Agree. Think this track should have been a single.....maybe should have been released before Ashes to Ashes ...in other words the lead single from Scary Monsters.

"...So I'll dance my life away
A million dreams, a million scars..."
What a beautiful song...
George Murray was a hell of a bass player, melodic and inventive,he supports the song brilliantly here.
Wrote for his son Duncan, beautiful and haunting x

We still miss you David.
Scary monsters....great album...beautiful voice....love Bowie forever
That guitar riff sounds haunting but cool af at the same time. Bowie was the best at bringing together so many styles.
I heard this riff in my head, thought i'd never hear it again and here i am! always loved david bowie
Very much the underrated piece here. A foretaste of what was to come.
Loving that synth. And everything about this song. :D
Love bowie's voice and the keyboard riffs
The opening is sublime!!

Pete Townshend sure plays a mean rhythm guitar on this track, killer!

"GET YOUR EYE TAKEN OUT!"
I always thought Pete played the lead part in the intro. It had a very "Eminence Front" tone to it.
Underrated
VERY much so imo x x

The bittersweet sequel to Hunky Dory's Kooks.
In what way?
This was my intro song back in my pirate radio days in the late 80's. It was my opening song to my 2 hour shift. Great days now long passed.
Sublime.
A certain Pete Townsend playing awesome guitar on this one.
Townshend on this dope

Freakin' killer song. With Townsend on guitar. No wonder it's my fav of all.

the keyboard on this reminds of an Elvis Costello & The Attractions track- very Steve Nieve-ish.
