fr 14 years ago.. saw it as a 14 year old kid in the Netherlands, far from the coast & poor... learned how to surf in australia 6 years later during my WHV and still forever think about this vid, Billabong did a greater thing here than they might think
whenever im stressed i always come back to this video. It helps me gain a little perspective and remind me that life is what you make it, and if you arent happy, change it
Man, chokes me up every time I watch this. I saw this video shortly before he died which made me totally change my perception of Andy for the better forever. I come here whenever I need a burst of motivation in life.
I was about to post the exact same comment, then I saw yours. Not sure how or why this gets me or why I feel as though I had known him but he has made SUCH a massive contribution to so many peoples lives and I feel as though I am one of those people....
***** Such bad timing I think, I always thought he was a bit arrogant (especially Bruce) but this came out and I saw another side of him and was a fan after that, couple months later and he was dead:(
I have to say it, even though an Australian, that Andy's style as a surfer was one of the best I've ever seen. And that's from someone who's been around since 1967!
I just learned of this GOAT Andy Irons by watching "KISSED BY GOD" Instant SUPER FAN!!! I don't even surf but love surfing now bc of Andy!! Forever Andy irons
I surf because we only have one life. The fullest life that I feel I can lead is spending a lot of time in the ocean and being kind to one another. Spread that aloha the way andy irons did.
DaRealCheo you might enjoy Mick Fanning at The Snake. I’ve only _just_ come to find AI, and my life is forever changed. But if you like the look of that wave, I think you might enjoy the clips of Mick at The Snake, too.
I met andy after walkin out of the kalalau trail. He smiled and shook my hand, and he was always an inspiration to me. He and bruce. One love to the irons ohana. A.I. FOREVER
Andy was the most fluid and smooth surfer. Made surfing look effortless, remember watching him surf in front of my house at pine trees. A.I.FOREVER, Hanalei will never forget the legacy you left
Why would anyone dislike this? It's about a man that did something he loved, something real and something he was passionate about throughout his entire life..rip Andy Irons
It's unsettling that a single individual can have so much influence in your life, without saying a word to this gentleman. I understand he went to the best of a different drum, but I think that's what I appreciate most. God bless Andy. Fuck you for making me write something via UA-cam, hopefully I'll have the honor of meeting you some day, or having a fraction of your talent. RIP my friend.
An unbelievably talented surfer surfing incredible waves whilst having a very candid and honest chat. I watch this video at least once every year for perspective and inspiration. Thank you Andy and those involved in producing this.
Andy Irons spoke truthfully from his mind and heart his honesty is an attribute to be admired. He always spoke from his heart mind and soul. His athleticism was epic he ignited everyone he came in contact with. His energy bountiful and always sharing aloha throughout the universe his legacy will grow prosper and ignite generations to come. It is just the tip of the iceberg man 2019 and into the future Andy has arrived is safe forever. He would want for all of us to try to do our personal best.
i started surfing watching you on tv when i was 10 you were and will be forever my favourite surfer when you came in italy in 2009 i was there me and one of my friend make a photo with you and take your autograph....when i knew that you passed away i cried....RIP Andy i will never forget you
Surfing and skateboarding are the only sport on this planet that can make someone feel so good toward something in life. Rest in peace Andy Irons you're surfing the perfect point break up there buddy. You're gone but never forgotten I'll tell my kids the story of you the greatest surfers to ever live. LONG LIVE AI!
yewboi123 i surf aswell, for now 6 years or more. I can feel that, its the most spiritual sport. It changed my life. Yes it is hard to explain because each one have a different way to see surf for itself. But its not only surf that gives a good feeling, thats my point. My friend surfed but he didnt fell up to it, so he started hiking and he loves it to his life! Its about YOUR inner happiness, thats what makes a sport feels good, doesnt matter the sport.
Very touching clip. The barrel Andy gets half way through this clip is the longest tube ride I've ever seen! Surfing will never forget you Andy and neither will we!
I surf because of Andy. I remember the first wave I ever caught. You feel so in peace when your surfing like nothing else in the world matters. Thank you Andy. R.I.P may you be ripping it in heaven.
What he said referring to 'inner demons' struck a chord with me. I too struggle with many inner demons and surfing is pretty much the one thing I have that keeps me sane lol. RIP AI
That purest moment is Joy and it’s a hard thing to find and if ur lucky enough to find it( even if it was along time ago when u were little ) keep it chasing it, it’s elusive but not out of reach
Anyone else notice the music they gave him 'A.A. Bondy'...was it changed to this after he died? 'Killed myself when i was young, With my fingers on a poison gun' Legend, but those eyes are telling a different story to what he speaks, almost as if he's already hit a point of no return, yet, a somewhat excitement when talking about his first memories though, sad. Like he says, chicks, parties, cars...they're just stuff. Surfing is something real, it changes people...RIP.
I once met him in Hossegor (France) in autumn 2005 at an ASP contest, when I was sitting on the beach with a good old friend, the whole day long. Then, suddenly Andy came out of the water and I went to him for an autograph. He saw me and my "Hawaii Skate 84 Skate Co."-T-Shirt and smiled: "My homeland, man! Have you been there?" I answered: "Yes!" and smiled, too. Than he signed, while dozen of kids ran to us and came around. Cool guy, good moment! R.I.P. Andy!
I just went surfing for the first time yesterday... I've never felt anything more pure and rewarding. I totally understand everything andy is saying now!
It's crazy to think and look back at the one person who influenced me for years is gone. Without Andy Irons in this world i wouldnt be surfing, kelly slater might not have as much motivation as he does now, and the sport would be completely different. To that i thank you from the bottom of my heart ANDY IRONS for all you have done. R.I.P(S.I.P.)
From a person with more inter demons than probably the legal limit I could see it in his eyes which is so sad, unfortunately I never got to met Andy but man when he was clean his surfing sure showed it, I believe he would of had many more world championships if he just could of avoided what he spoke on, yes there’s many more people out here with what was troubling him sure most definitely, but I’m pretty sure not to many or if any at all had the skills that AI had in the water such a pleasure to watch surf, God Andy rest Peacefully you left way to early but it’s not your fault our lives are pre written by the big guy upstairs God.
Not a goodbye man, but simply a see you later. You were and always will be a great inspiration to many. Truly the best. I know you are up there surfing every day and watching out for the rest of us down here bro. Rest in Paradise Andy!
Every time I hit a low, I watch this video. The boards then get chucked in the car, a coffee and sitting in the water watching the sun rise. R.I.P Andy, your memories will forever lie in peoples heart still and inspires us to become the better man when we come out of the water.
I have never surfed either, but I have always had an interest in it and love the ocean. I have always admired surfers outlook on life and God. Makes me grateful for every day and every precious moment I am blessed with in this life.
I surf because of the feeling i get when i ride a wave, its pure freedom I surf because of the relaxing feeling i get whenever im sitting behind a break, watching the waves and crystal clear water i surf because of people like Andy Irons, he is a true inspiration. Completely down to earth, and is an unexplainable person. This man changed my life. We need more people like this in the world.
I could watch Andy surf all day. He was just so damn good. It's a shame he left us so early. Andy was my favorite surfer. Thumbs up if he was yours too
I am from Puerto Rico and i have admire andy since ever, i left everything i had on my weekend to see andy compete here for the rip curl pro search and..i..couldn't see..him..and now i go surfing and all i think about is what if i had known him... inside all his recognitions, wins and losts he is a humble cool dude... i will always live wondering what would have been just shaking hands with andy irons... and ofcourse i still hope one day i can shake hands with Bruce. R.I.P AI
This is more than just surfing, this is how we should lead our lives. If we ever start to hate what we're doing, we need to take a step back and go back to the basics. We have to be passionate about our lives, because who knows when it will end. Thank you, AI, for reminding us how to live. Andy will always be young in our minds.
I love this vid I come and watch every now and then .. I remember when he passed .. he was coming back getting in to it again .. shame how life just throws you a curveball and it’s over .. but ai is forever ..

This video really makes me want to get back to the days when life was care free and all I had to worry about was how big the waves were breaking. Inspiring!
andy, thank you for being an inspiration to the surf world. I can remember being little and reading about you. Your story is beautiful and your message is strong. You spoke truth and honesty and always seemed to be humble. You are greatly missed. R.I.P.
I saw this video for the first time right after he passed away and I nearly cried!! And even after the 10th time its still fucking sad... Rip A.I. you will never be forgotten! Greetings from Berlin, Germnay
I agree, that first sensation of standing up on a wave -- not "soup" but an actual wave -- in one of the most exhilarating experiences imaginable. It happened to me as "Scripps" in La Jolla, just south of the pier, in the incredible summer of 1963, at the age of 17, when all the surf music first came out -- Surf City, etc. In 3 months I was whipping that board around like Andy Irons (well not quite). Seems like a heavenly dream looking back. Idyllic, glassed off, two girls for every boy.
So proud on this surfer and his words! I never saw him in real life but i really love him and all the good surfers in the world! all the respects to them!
2024 - still need this video every now and then
Never leaves 🙏
