  • There are several temples to Lord Subrahmanaya Swamy, son of Maa Parvathi and Lord Shiva used to call as Murugan, Skanda, Kumara, Subrahmanya, Shadanana, Shanmukha, Saravana, and Guha in and outside of Bharat. Pilgrims can visit 1.Tiruvaran Kundram, 2.Tiruchendur, 3.Palani,4 Swamymalai and 5. Armuligam Solaimalal Subrahmanya temples by their stay in Madhurai in Rameswaram Yatra, The sixth temple at Tiruttani can visit by rail travel and continue to Tiruchurapalli for continuation. Lord Subrahmanaya Swamy called with different names in these six abodes and there is legend behind each Shrine.
    Subrahmanya Swamy birth meant for a cause to exterminate the domain Tarakasura. Tarakasura was spiritually endowed with Atmalinga of Lord Shiva and he can exterminated only by the son born to Maa Parvathi and Lord Shiva. Manmadha disturbed the penance of Lord Shiva and Lord Agni could not unbearable the divinity of Lord Shiva and dropped in River Ganga which was entered into Shiva, Sambhooti, Preeti, Sannathi, Anasuya and Kruma, the six Kruthika. They dropped in the bushes and Shanmuka emerged with six faces. Maa Parvathi and Lord Shiva reached Kailash along with Shanmukha. He has other names as Gangeya, Subrahmanya Swamy, Kumara Swamy and Karthikeya.
    Lord Shiva appointed Kumara Swamy as the Commander of Gods and presenting Trident and other weapons. Maa Parvathi presented “Sakthi” weapon and declared war against Tarakasura. Lord Vishnu informed that Tarakasura could not be exterminated as he wear Atmalinga in his neck and the Atmalinga has to be split to exterminate him. Kumara Swamy launched Agneya Astra and split the Atma Linga into five parts. Indra, Moon (Chandra), Vishnu, Sun(Surya) and Karthikeya established the fragments at Amararama, Bheemarama, Ksheeraraama, Draksharama and Kumararama popularly known as Pancharama in Andhra Pradesh. Kumara Swamy performed battle with Tarakasura and killed hm in the battle protecting Gods and universe from the domain Tarakusura. 1.Tiruvaran Koondram, 2.Tiruchendur, 3 Palani, 4.Swamymalai, 5. Tiruttani and 6.Armuligam Solaimalal are the Six Subrahmanya Shrines in Tamil Nadu State and related to Lord Murugan.
    Murugan (Subrahmanya Swamy) exterminated another domain Surapadma and married Devasena, daughter of Indra at Palani worshipping Lord Shiva in the form of Parimgirinathar. The six abodes of Subrahmanya Swamy have legends. The abode of Murugan in Tiruvaran Kundram mentioned in Skanda Purana. Sura Padma, a domain defeated Indra and wanted his wife Indrani. Indra urged the assistance of Lord Subrahmanya. Murugan split Sura Padma into two parts and blessed with Bantam and Peacock forms taking the Peacock as his vehicle. The day of defeating of Sura Padma perform as the holy day Skandha Sasti and special festival performed in all the Murugan Temples. Indra given his daughter Devasena marriage with Murugan in Tiruvaran Kundram.
    There is a legend for the marriage of Murugan with Valli Devi. Sage Narada visited Subrahmanya Swamy informing about the birth of Valli Devi. Valli Devi has born from the effulgence of a sage and was left in the forest. She was developed by the king of the forest with the name of Valli. Sage Narada desired the marriage of the Aesthetic Valli Devi with Subrahmanya Swamy and the Lord gone to the residence of Valli in the form of a young Prowl. Before that Narada reached the residence of the forest King and informed that Shiva sent Valli Devi to upgrade them and the person marry Valli Devi is the son of Maa Gowri and Lord Sankara, a great warrior, a great Sage and Commander of the Gods Army. Subrahmanya Swamy entered into the forest and asked Valli Devi to marry him. The King treated the Lord as a hunter and left arrows on him with his army. Subrahmanya debilitated the arrows and launched Sammohana Astra. Subrahmanya along with Valli Devi in sitting posture appeared before them and all made prostration salutation to Lord Murugan. Maa Parvathi and Lord Shiva along with other gods performed marriage to Subrahmanya with Valli Devi. Subrahmanya Swamy along with his wives Valli and Devasena glowed in Palani Shrine.
    The auspicious day Suddha Sashti (Sixth day after full moon) in Margaseersha Month (Dec-Jan) on which Omnipotent Subrahmanya Swamy married Devasena treated as “Sri Subrahmanya Sashti” and special wedding ceremonies, Sahasra Nama Poojas and Theerthams will perform gloriously. EOn the auspicious day of Subrahmanya Sashti, devotees present Milk, Fruits, Silver flours, eyes and Padagas. The special worship performed will give the graceful views of the Lord. The blessings of the Lord are essential for Awakening of the Divine Serpent Power (Kundalini).
