- ‘If we have a culture in which certain groups are off limits and they’re not allowed to be laughed at or can’t laugh at themselves, it’s a recipe for disaster.’
Nina Power tells Andrew Doyle that to be in a ‘thriving healthy culture, everything has to be potentially mockable.’

open mockery is actually how we protect society from dictators/totalitarians
and is the very point of satire
@@Gruxxan And a useful reason to have a court jester.
Spot on. Spitting Image (the old one), Rory Bremner, old HIGNFY, etc, all these mocked the elites and satirically lampooned their targets, therefore puncturing their posturing and their 'virtue'. Nowadays, if you try to mock a virtue signaller you are cancelled or attacked or called an -ism. As an offshoot, when shows do try to mock the modern elites - Harry and MeAgain, Jack and Zuck, Gates and Cook etc, they can't really bring themselves to really go for them and the comedy comes off as lame and weak.
yes, this is the point of the video. everything must be open to mockery but apparently not everything is any more. some things are 'off limits'. our freedoms are being eroded by well-meaning but misguided do-gooders. LGBT are joining forces with islamists (ironically) as they both have the same agenda, IE to protect their ideologies from any form of criticism: its blasphemy law by the back door.
@David Ward its the other way around. its because islam is a totalitarian ideology that there is no satire. it didn't become totalitarian because of no satire.
Anyone who says they have never mocked anything is a blatant liar.
I'd go further. Ridicule is often the only reality check some people get.
Pretty anti semitic of you
@simon templer probably because they see the humour and find you funny 😝
@@golem4892 If Trump supporters had sense of humour...
@simon templer Well, kinda turned out that the TDS 'Orange man Bad' memes were funnier.. That's how it works.
Well said Nina, it's one of the things that was British was we could laugh at ourselves and others without any malice but people were adults back then. That generation had parents that had lived through the war and had no privileges. These days the snowflakes het offended at a bit of metal, a painting or a building, these people need a wake up call or therapy. Bring back national service, make them into real men
The equality act - with its ridiculous "protected characteristics" - is to blame for lot of this. That and another absurdity: "hate speech" laws.
@A A where did he say that?
@A A You obviously don't know what a strawman argument is.
The British people need free speech. Please repel section 127 of the 2003 communications act
Here here
Without political comedy satire etc there's no release valve...political comedy or political violence it's not a difficult choice 😉
and it exposes anyone with totalitarian tendencies, IE people that complain about it
@@Gruxxan yeah beware the people who cannot laugh at themselves, instant red flag 🙄
Nina Power also made these points.. ‘We seem to forget that Christianity is a benefit for art & for human relations.. it has good, it encourages forgiveness & a recognition of man being flawed. Contemporary view is if you have done one terrible thing or even one small thing wrong then you are kind of damned forever. There is a cast of very sadistic bullies who present themselves as the most moral agents!
It seems we are no longer defending principles of beauty or truth or justice’
She sees very clearly - more please 👍
@A A Your feelings are a secular position for sure, not one I share.
Very true. Nothing and no one should be above having the piss taken out of them. It's what we English do
Some folks just can't take a joke
This is so true!
Mock the woke!
We have known this since the 1700s and began fighting for it with the English bill of rights and the works of brilliant minds …… so how come we are now devolving ?! 🤬🤢
Remember Stag Nights or Hen Nights. Jokes where about everything and anybody. All my mates though I was English because I have a London accent. Then they found out I was in fact a Scot..... That was it I got hammered... "Sweat Sock".... How was the Grand Canyon formed? A jock dropped a penny down a rabbit hole. 🤣. But didn't we have FUN. Now it's don't say anything you may offend someone. But I think it's run it's course the Great Majority have had enough of the minority TRYING to run people's lives. And are (slowly) hitting back.🤔
I didn't know that the scots were kept out of pubs and jobs in the 1960s-80s?
You are correct Lady......
Nina! You are a breath of fresh air and embody the joy you so rightly sense today's culture lacks.
Look forward to seeing you on 13th at Big Mother in Vauxhall.
You go, gurrl!
We are living in a Monty Python sketch
No I’m not!!! :)
A critical race theorist got a job in a snack bar and dropped the cutlery drawer on the floor. Yeah, you should've heard those snack knives clatter!
Well said
Good to see an enthusiastic intelligent, informed commentater.
Rather than one simply repeating the establishment agenda by rote.
It's interesting how some people conflate the criticism of someone’s race and sexuality with criticism of someone’s religious beliefs. Race and sexuality are inherited traits that we acquire in a genetic lottery and can do nothing to change, whereas religion is a chosen lifestyle. In the same way that some people choose to become socialists or vegans, so others may choose to believe in a god. No one is advocating laws to protect the feelings of socialists and vegans, so what makes deists so precious?
we are becoming a sterile world without humour, joy, passion or beauty!
Judy Garland walked into a bar and complained to the barman that they weren't displaying any flags for Pride month.
"Sorry love," he said "but we're pretty much over the rainbow."
Ahh the 90s....
Meanwhile at Stonewall...
"Well everybody, 2020 will go down as the greatest year in our history. We've expanded our lobbying to include just about anyone who likes the colour pink. The corporations, TV and film studios, all the media are eating out of the palm of our hand. We've got trans in women's prisons and sport, and gender identity in the classrooms. Total equality for everone we represent across the board including employment, marriage, and everything else. We've acheived every goal beyond our wildest expectations. How does that sound?"
"It sounds like we're out of a job."
"Ah, well that's where you're wrong. You see there's one demographic we haven't really convinced."
"Who might that be?"
"The general public. You see they're not really on board with all the gender identity and women's prisons and sport stuff."
"Who can blame them, really."
"What?"
"Sorry. You were saying."
"So what we need to do is bring our message to the general public big time. Instead of a Pride month, I'm thinking about making 2022 a Pride year. All our rainbow flags and merch everywhere you look for a whole year. That will really get the public on our side and really hammer the message home."
"That's a fantastic idea. It can't fail."
A teacher was explaining critical race theory to the white kids from one of Brighton's roughest council estates.
"So," said one of her students "what you're sayin' is that when we go out nickin' cars an' robbin' houses an' that, we shouldn't be nickin' from, like, black people 'cos they're, like, oppressed an' that."
"Well, ahem," she replied "you need to check your white privilege is what I'm saying."
"That's no bover, 'cos we never go near those houses 'cos you'll prolly get, like, stabbed an' that."
The fact that my comment was instantly deleted shows pretty clearly that there is a group of people you can't even really mention
Or because your a boring anti semitic spammer and people report you for kicks lol
Mockery is important to development, if you can't mock something or somebody you are in essence making them or it beyond reproach and if something or somebody is beyond reproach there is no way to save them/it when it begins to go awry or fail.
Unless it's the prophet mohamed some poor teacher might loose his head
If you were to ask her, I'm sure she would agree though
If I were in charge, I'd put that cartoon on every billboard in the land. They can't cut everyone's head off.
My principle is if someone can shit on my religion, I can shit on other ones
Wow best thing I’ve heard in a long time. I grew up in late 70s early 80’s in the Uk. Everybody and everything was fair game, we just called it taking the piss. Black white gay whatever we all had a laugh at each other’s expense. Nobody died of being offended we just enjoyed life.
Many people were scared by bullying. You probably weren't the life and soul if the party you thought you were
@@fishgreed8098 I was bullied mercilessly at one point, but I can tell you I was still capable of a sense of humour.
I think that's a little bit of gaslighting there!
Intreresting things are said in this interview but we should not miss the underlying point that these two fine people had a private wager going on as to who could speak more rapidly, i.e. get more words into one minute of conversation. I think the gentleman retains his title.
Let’s face it, the woke brigade have had personality transplants, turning them into humourless, bland, over sensitive irritants.
"Hello love, how can I help?"
"Don't you sexually objectify me, Mister so-called greengrocer!"
Wow, she talks fast.
No redefinition, no change, no culture.
Myth proposes, satire disposes. The health of a society can never be measured by the quality of satire as its only role is to offer critique. Only myth builds a world.
She's right, everything is open to mockery, including Nina bastard power!!!
Can anyone remember when this comedian last said something funny? Grifter
Least he's not a sell out like Frankie Boyle
@@leebrown1049 I beg to differ
@@darrengray5045 differ all you like. Boyle is a hypocrite and husk of his former self.
@anonymous one yeah, as much as I laugh at him sometimes he does a few too many of them. Especially the pedo ones.
One or two is OK as long as done right, but when 50% of your routine is made up of it there's something else going on.
@@darrengray5045 of course you do you probably think Nish Kumar is funny
