By far the best Clouds Rest hike video on UA-cam - you actually showed and talked about the trail and didn't fill the space with inane music. I haven't hiked this trail for more than 20 years, but I'm going to do it next year - as soon as snow/road conditions allow.
Thank you! Yea, I try to make my guide videos about you on the trail and not me. I have the same frustration with some of the other videos. And have fun on the hike. I try to do this every year, such a classic hike...
I am scared of heights and I did this hike while hiking the John Muir Trail. I agree with narrator it is still possible to do if really scared (I still am) as long as you have a kind and patient companion to hike it with that won't rush you or make you feel badly when you get scared. It was the first encounter I had with such a narrow mountain pass and it hit me hard! About where that sign starts and he says the trail "dead ends," I tried to convince my hiking companion that this COULDN'T POSSIBLY be a trail, then we see the sign. I made it to about minute 7:04 and that's the rock I laid down and clung to in fear for a good fifteen minutes I think! Then my hiking companion reminded me that the sun was setting and it would be a lot harder to get down in the dark, so even though he knew I was having a panic attack, we had to get down. Honestly, he had to hold my hand off and on for the spine, which is probably not safe but it helped and I made it! I had of course decided I was just going to have to live there! Haha, but seriously, I was really scared. I am so glad I did this and it gave me the courage to make it 3/4 way up Half Dome the next day, until I hit the ropes/climbing lines.
Thanks for sharing that, and yea, lots of people experience what you did. At least you got to experience the bulk of the hikes and didn't do anything that you don't feel comfortable with. If you don't feel safe, then don't do it. Everyone has their own personal comfort level. If you sit at the base of the cables at Half Dome you can witness it in action all the time. I know that some folks have luck crawling in the tough sections, and it works. I've crawled on windy exposed sections of mountains before. Whatever keeps you safe. Good luck with your hiking and adventures!
Outstanding presentation. You just showed and explained in less than 10 minutes what others take 30 minutes or more trying to show. Very well done with clear steady views along the whole trail. Thanks for taking the time to do this. VERY helpful for our trip next month.
@Jonnyvids14 I get a kick out of the folks that talk about off grid. Loner lifestyle. 98% of what people do is up down. After spending 28 to 45 days in the woods with the Army, 210 days in field one year, I had my dose of camping. I don't like going alone anymore. Hence, the dog dilemma. Taking kids now. I am a Sierra guy now. Weather matters. Go stand on top of second tunnel in Zion. Go up Mount Trumbull on way to Toroweap. You can drive right past fire hall to lava flow. On Trumbull you can see where it flowed into canyon. Lava Falls. Bam.
Being someone who’s afraid of heights, but has long wondered if I might be able to do this hike, I REALLY appreciate your encouraging tone (AND your detailed tips for avoiding the most “vertiginous” part of the final spine; very helpful!). After watching your video, it seems more likely that the distance, and the altitude, are the factors for which I would need to be most prepared. Thanks, again, for a most enlightening primer on the Cloud’s Rest hike. 😊
Thanks for the guide. We are planing to do Clouds Rest in August this year. Its my second trip to the US and my first to Yosemite NP, Iam really looking foward to it
Did this hike for the first time yesterday, thanks for all your info that my friend and I referenced beforehand. We actually got to about 2 miles from the summit before turning around because of a storm that rolled in on us on the way up. Intermittent thunder for about 10 minutes, then some lightning. It was a tough call, but I am glad we didn't risk it. Still, lots of beautiful trails and views and a beautiful smoky colored sunset. Can't wait to get back and summit. Thanks again for all your info!
Ah sorry to hear that you had to turn around but it was a smart call. I've had to do that many times as well. And like you said, gives you a great excuse to come back...
Definitely going to stay at Wawona next summer or the following summer and rent a cabin again. I just added this on to my bucket list. I will go over and watch the last part of the 360 too. So thank you hikingguy!!!
Hi! Awesome video! We're summitting Clouds Rest as part of a 4 day backpacking adventure next week. We are setting up a base camp past the pack trail (Forsythe?) and summitting Clouds Rest as a day hike the next day. Two questions. Where are some good spots on the approach (past the pack trail) to set up a base camp and then does the trail just go up and over the top and down the north side to the JMT? We're going up and over and then around back on the pack trail as a day hike. Thanks for filming this to give us a good idea of what to expect! Cheers!
Great video. Thanks, Cris, especially for the tip about keeping left over the narrowest part of the spine. I'll be heading up in a month to tackle this hike and am now confident of smooth[er] sailing.
This and Half Dome are a haul from Valley. 22 or more miles. Hot. Although Clouds Rest is higher the view from Half Dome kills it. Sorry it just does. Obviously you want to go up via Nevada Falls Vernal. Past Half Dome. And that way you can take the upper trail down (Nevada). On way up walk over to the creek at the bottom of Nevada Falls. 300 yards back. Just past little bridge on way up. After Vernal cascade.

My friends are concerned about hiking the last part on the spine. I appreciate your encouraging comments. Would it be fair to tell them that if they don't do the final spine portion that they'll still have excellent views but just not as excellent as doing the spine?
Yea, there's still lots of beauty on the hike, even if you don't go all the way to the end. And the beginning section of granite (at the last stretch) is wide and offers nice views too. 👍👍
There are good camping spots just before Clouds Rest with great views. I've done the one-way from Tenaya to Yosemite Valley and it was about 17 miles if I remember correctly. Don't remember any water between the lake before Clouds Rest and Little Yosemite Valley, but it's not that far.
Great video Cris, as always!! Would you compare some of those spine sections to those of the Devil's Backbone up to Baldy, as far as drop offs and trail width? Your video should get more view. Awesome detail on the trail. I am planning to hike cloud rest this Summer. Stay on Groveland side (120). How far is that to Sunrise Lake Trail head? What’s is starting time for this trail ?
Thank you! 🙏 Check out the web page in the link under the video - has all the mileage and timing details - hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/yosemite-hikes/clouds-rest-hike-guide/
I plan on backpacking this from Cathedral Lake to Yosemite Valley. Have you ever taken the lower, pack trail around the peak? Is it low exposure? I will be going with someone in my party who is severely afraid of heights, so going through the summit of Clouds Rest won't be an option.
Thanks for this video! I have also been taking your recommendations on equipment for this hike. I plan to do it the 2nd week of October. I'll be by myself and was planning to start around 5 AM. I usually jog the relatively level sections. Do you think this is irresponsible with the chance of startling a bear in the dark/at dawn? I'll have good hiking gear but I understand that I can't carry bear spray.
You're actually not allowed to use bear spray in Yosemite so no worries. You should be fine, the bears always run away and are used to humans hiking and running. Have fun!
Wonderful Video! Great insights here as I plan my first Yosemite trip. I understand I don’t need a permit for this hike. However I do need either a day pass or a backcountry permit to hike and camp in this area am I correct? Could you suggest a backcountry permit to apply for to do this hike? Thank you for you insights!
Thank you, glad it was helpful. If you want to camp, you have to apply for a backcountry permit here > www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/wpres.htm - there are some great campsites right around the Clouds Rest area, and it's hard to go wrong with any route you'd like. If you have a car shuttle you can start on this trail and then hike down to the Yosemite Valley on the JMT / Half Dome route.
Usually people only have mild symptoms here like a minor headache. Check out the section on altitude sickness in this guide to know what to do: hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/hikes-around-mt-whitney/mt-whitney-hike/
Waterwheel Falls and Glen Aulin Trail is a great hike, just tough because you climb on the way back. I did it a few years ago, saw a bear (it ran away) and escaped the crowds.
Great video! I’m got a permit out of sunrise lakes trailhead and put on my permit to camp my first night on the shoulder of clouds rest. Do you happen to know where this would be in your video?
i actualluy camped on clouds rest years ago when i worked in yosemite and it was the most amazing sky i ever seen that night...i cowboy camped and a few others did as well and a couple had a tent in a flat area right before descending down like u were going to half dome and the valley an yeah we know ur not suppose to camp/tent up there but sometimes u just have to live ; great great video though
Super informative! I'm planning on backpacking with friends from Sunrise to Little Yosemite. Does the trail continue past the ridge? Or do I have to turn early when I hit the "Cloud's Rest Foot Trail" sign? Also, does is this trail doable with 50 lb. bag behind me? Thanks!
Check out the link in the description for the full guide, which includes an interactive trail map. 50lbs is heavy but I'm sure people do it. You might want to try to carry less, it will be more enjoyable.
I reeeeeally want to do this one!! Me and my boyfriend hiked to half dome a few months ago, and I panicked at subdome😅 it was scary for me. He calmed me down, and we continued walking. Once we got to the top and I saw the cables I realized I was not doing it. It was a lot higher than I thought, pictures do NO justice on how high that is. I waited for my boyfriend there at the bottom. I wonder if half dome is scarier than this one? Clouds rest is on my bucket list, just don’t want my fear of heights kicking in again 😅
For my first visit to Yosemite we're planning to do at least one summit since we're only spending a day so would you say this is a better view than on North Dome? If you could only do one
Going to Yosemite for the first time this year. And you mentioned it in the video but I couldn’t make it out. What is the round trip mileage. Was wanting to do it as a day hike.
Anyone know how accurate the trail signage is in terms trail length? Did this hike last week (7/2/21) and we’ve been debating the true length of the trail. Based on AllTrails, multiple Tom Harrison maps, and anecdotes from other hikers I put the hike around 12-13 miles round trip, but signs and one friend’s recording suggest 15-16 miles. Which is correct?
Your GPS can always be off based on several factors, the correct figure is about 12.5 roundtrip. The park signs are also not super-precise, but rather more like ballparks.
There are different camping options (tents, campground, walk-up) and this page does a good job of explaining it all: www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/eatingsleeping.htm
Thank you so much for all that you do! I hiked Yosemite Falls on my bday in April with some guidance & direction from your site. To date, that was the longest, steepest hike that I’ve done. It took me longer than usual because I hadn’t hiked in 6 months & I had some high thyroid stuff going on. I plan on hiking Clouds Rest at the end of June, but my group wants to start from Cury Village😩 I plan on being more conditioned & ready. It’s supposed to be 18 miles, 6300’ incline. Any tips on shoes to wear, getting over my fear of heights, elevation preparation & how much water to bring? I have Hoka One Speedgoat 4’s which fair well. Someone said I should get some waterproof boots as there may be snowy parts. I do better with heights if I’m not on the edge of steep drop-offs. I hope to God I can complete this hike! Please tell me this is doable🤣
That's a great hike and very doable, but challenging. I'd call the ranger station and ask about the snow, it's obviously variable and June is on the cusp. I think your Speedgoats will be fine. You can try using them with micro-spikes too.. Check out the gear page on my site for soem recommendations.
Hey there! Awesome video I love the detail you put in. Makes it a lot easier to see what is going to be expected. I have a question for you. This September myself and a friend are doing Tuolumne meadows via cathedral lakes trail head to Yosemite valley. (Our permit is secured) Our second night is at sunrise lakes and our 3rd night is at clouds rest. The whole trip is planned to a T but there is a little unknown factor for clouds rest. Is the summit to clouds rest and up and back from the trail or does the trail continue through? We’re having some difficulty trying see where would be the best place to camp. I have a detailed map saying it continues through but it’s hard to find a video or other info confirming this. Any information is much appreciated!!
Congrats on bagging the permit, your route sounds great. The trail goes right over the peak and down. And there are some good camping spots just before the rocks start when heading up to Clouds Rest. I have a picture of the spot in the guide (link in description). 👍
Just completed the trail last Saturday, the video helped to prepare mentally for it, getting to the top I noticed that I was drained out, that contributes to some “fake fear of heights”, just take a pause and refresh, it goes away. Views are amazing and worth it. One thing missing in the video as a comment is that the way back is the most miserable way back trail I ever done, It took more energy and time to go back then climbing it up. I wont probably repeat this trail, the return was a bit traumatic. Probably would advise to try some permit to sleep and hike half dome next day and climb all the way down to mist trail (and find a bus back to Tenaya lake parking). Keep up the good work with the videos Mr. Hiking Guy. See my VR 360 climb here in 4k: ua-cam.com/video/VRC8gTBFQSQ/v-deo.html
Congrats and yea, good point, when you're tired from the hike leading up to this point, the cables can seem even tougher. They do require a fair bit of concentration.
Absolutely incorrect. I just did this hike and there is Lower Sunrise Lake, then there is the pond that he shows in the video and at least 3 creeks around 1.5 miles from the summit. You can totally carry a water filter and get water. Stop spreading misinformation.
@@hemming57 the video literally shows you the pond that is two miles from the summit. And there are three creeks after that. Are you sure you feel okay, hemming uncle?

Summer.
I've gone straight over and down but never on that bypass. I'd give the ranger station a call and see what they say.
Helpful video thank you! Been hearing horror stories about altitude sickness here. Should I be concerned? Any tips?
Usually people only have mild symptoms here like a minor headache. Check out the section on altitude sickness in this guide to know what to do: hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/hikes-around-mt-whitney/mt-whitney-hike/
Doing this trail in a few weeks! Was considering doing the Water Wheel Falls & Glen Aulin trail the next day. Have you done that trail as a day hike?
Waterwheel Falls and Glen Aulin Trail is a great hike, just tough because you climb on the way back. I did it a few years ago, saw a bear (it ran away) and escaped the crowds.
@@Hikingguy Thanks! Guess I'll give it a shot, I'm sure it will be crowded even with the passes.
Great video! I’m got a permit out of sunrise lakes trailhead and put on my permit to camp my first night on the shoulder of clouds rest. Do you happen to know where this would be in your video?
Around this point - ua-cam.com/video/4uIW5EZ4zXs/v-deo.html
i actualluy camped on clouds rest years ago when i worked in yosemite and it was the most amazing sky i ever seen that night...i cowboy camped and a few others did as well and a couple had a tent in a flat area right before descending down like u were going to half dome and the valley an yeah we know ur not suppose to camp/tent up there but sometimes u just have to live ; great great video though
You have to live, is it? By breaking the rules that everyone else has to follow? No end to low lives like you.
at 8:42 to the left just a 5-10 feet past the bush is where i slept :) i have a picture of it
Super informative!
This is much more mellow than Half Dome, I think you'll be okay.
How long do you think is needed for someone that goes a little slower?
just take your pace and divide it into the total distance
For my first visit to Yosemite we're planning to do at least one summit since we're only spending a day so would you say this is a better view than on North Dome? If you could only do one
Yea, Clouds Rest is a classic, I'd do this first.
Going to Yosemite for the first time this year. And you mentioned it in the video but I couldn’t make it out. What is the round trip mileage. Was wanting to do it as a day hike.
Check out the link in the description for all the details & have fun!
What is the total time it takes to hike to the top and also back down?
Check out the link in the description for that and all the info about the hike
Did you say under 32 miles? 😮😮😮
7.5 miles one way.
Does anyone know i have to make a reservation with Yosemite park for a camping spot? I've never been. Any help or advice is hugely appreciated!
There are different camping options (tents, campground, walk-up) and this page does a good job of explaining it all: www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/eatingsleeping.htm
This was my first hike ever. Did it off of 3 hours of sleep.
How fit do you need to have to be to do this? :)
I've seen people of all shapes, ages, and sizes here. It's very doable for most folks. Tough, but doable.
@@Hikingguy Thanks! I've got a day pass for late September and I'll try this then. :)
Did you say, there’s not as many deaths as half dome?
Not sure I follow, but the guide here discusses deaths on Half Dome > hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/yosemite-hikes/half-dome-hike-complete-guide/
Bring lots of water, there is none along the trail.
Absolutely incorrect. I just did this hike and there is Lower Sunrise Lake, then there is the pond that he shows in the video and at least 3 creeks around 1.5 miles from the summit. You can totally carry a water filter and get water. Stop spreading misinformation.
@@thewanderingsoul71 No water when I was there. Stop spreading misinformation.
@@hemming57 the video literally shows you the pond that is two miles from the summit. And there are three creeks after that. Are you sure you feel okay, hemming uncle?
