Way of the Roses | Coast to Coast by Bike | Day 2: Appletreewick to York

After drinking far too much beer the night before and waking up several times during the night full of regret for a poor decision - we both very much appreciated the enforced late breakfast that the hotel provided.
The second day’s ride was to be 60 miles from the sleepy village of Appletreewick where we had stayed the night to the much livelier city of York. Our research suggested that the first half of the day would be as hilly as the day before with the second half being much flatter.
When we were about 10 miles outside of York, we were caught again by the boys from Kent who easily overtook us on their road bikes and left us behind.
To our surprise after we passed “Beddingborough Hall” we found ourselves somehow back with them. They had managed to miss a turning and had taken another large detour. It was at this point that David decided that we needed to save face as hardened cyclists and we engaged in an impromptu race. We worked hard together, drafted behind one another, and managed to hold the front for a while but eventually the inevitable happened and they overtook again. We consoled ourselves with the fact that we had mountain bikes and we were carrying all our luggage while they had road bikes and had a man with a van carrying all their luggage.
We showered and headed out enthusiastically into York in search of beer and food - in that order. After a couple of pints, David commented that he couldn’t believe that everyone in York was so drunk so early in the evening. Pretty soon after finding a great pub by the river with cheap real ale - we had joined them.
