  • Saab 9-3 2004 With TRACTION CONTROL FAILURE CONTACT SERVICE message on the SID. The fuel pump keeps kicking on and off continuously.... And the car will not even attempt to start up. I repaird some wires near the ecu, that were cracked and split, all fuses are good, battery had 12.84 volts. Any and all help is greatly appriciated. Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem! EXACT the same problem. Traction Control means the speed/ABS sensors at the rear wheel. Check the wiring, from the box below the car to the sensor, the wire is off at some part. Briefly, check the ABS-sensor wiring harness

Erich, I bought a used ECU off of eBay for my Saab 9-3. It was around $80. When I took it to the shop to get programmed, it ended up being the wrong one. They did however have the correct one and charged me more for it; even though I traded. The cost for Tech2 programming was around $140 or so. I also had to replace the CIM because the key was no longer recognized and the wheel wouldn't unlock. That cost me around $280 for a new CIM which included 2 key fobs and ignition switch. I mailed the new CIM and key fobs to a guy off Ebay that programs them for $185. I'm not saying your CIM is bad, but I'm not ruling it out either. Just keep in mind that you have to tow you vehicle to a Saab specialist for any programming to your new ECU.

Damn!! My '07 Aero just started doing this. But it locks me in whatever gear i was in. I can start and drive it but its in limp mode and would change gears (its the 6spd auto.) I just hit some random object on the highway repaired everything i noticed wrong. And a week later this started. Im going to first check all my ABS sensors to see of what ever i hit and ran over didnt damage the wires. I reflash my ecm and it drives fine for a little bit then pops up again.
Praying its not the ECM. I read it could also be the ESP module, which connects to the CIM module, is bad and this is why shops require a CIM replacement. But if you get get a used one you can take it about and swap the ESP module out as well as the air bag clock spring. This saves you from habing to reprogram your system for new CIM and keyFABs.
I'm headed to a pick n pull this weekend to get one and see of it helps.

so i've had the same problem with some weird observations. I'm able to start it by taking out the starter relay and sticking a paper clip in 2 slots of the relay and the car will start right up (key in the on position). after that the car will start and run like normal unless i go several hours without running it again. It also happens more during the winter than any other time, almost making me believe it has something to do with the temperature. i've bought multiple starter relays to see if that was the issue and no luck. not going to put any substantial amount of money in the car so i'll keep trying cheap options but i can get it around as long as i keep a paperclip in the console. :)

Thomas, from the information that you have provided, it sounds like it could be the ignition switch cassette. The contacts inside may need a thorough cleaning, as well as, some new electrical grease applied. The removal isn't too difficult. Once removed, you will have to separate the black and white housing by prying the clips with two small flathead screwdrivers. Be careful not to lose any of the parts from inside, as some are small. It is much easier to assemble. Let me know if this helps with your problem . Good luck.

funny you say that. i actually took it out last year and there was a burn mark on one of the pads. i cleaned it up, bent the pins to create better contact with the pads, and put it back together. ran fine for a few months after that. might be time to look for a new one then. thanks for mentioning that!

I had to replace the ECU and CIM with used oneS off ebay. You will have to have the car towed to a repair shop that has a Tech2 to program the both. I did have to purchase a second ECU, since I was given a faulty one. I also purchased a Tech2 clone from chinacardiags.com for around $180. I do recommend buying one because it comes in hand and saves money.
