Och goodness, that’s where I grew up 😊 There’s a churchyard tucked beside the river in Kingussie which has some really old graves in it. John Macpherson, Ruthven barrack master is buried there, along with his children. The stones have incredible lettering on them.
Blessings, John. How AWESOME! Thanks so very much for sharing your SKILL with us. I have traveled around the world a few times, lived in China for 15 years, but I never made it to Scotland. London, England, yes…but not Scotland. My loss. Now I’m too old and broken, to travel. Thank you, for sharing the absolute BEAUTY of Scotland. Blessings, from this old man in northeast Tennessee. BRAVO!
This is an amazing tour with the history as well. Loved seeing the horses roaming free. John you are so lucky to live in a country with so much history and historical places. America is a baby in comparison. Can’t wait for the next tour and history lesson. Thank you
Many thanks and best wishes. Have a great weekend! I never take our amazing history for granted that’s for sure and it never fails to impress no matter how often I visit
Used to pass this place regulariy on the way to my German Stalker pals at the Invreshie House Hotel at nearby Kincraig, back in the eighties, stunning area. Lighting at night is positively haunting and dramatic. Always meant to have a look round the Barracks but sadly never got around to it. Really enjoyed your video. Used to do battlefield renactments with an 18th Century replica three pounder, RFA Period Uniform the lot. The coat and tricorn hat was surprisingly effective in inclement Highland Weather. The 45 is a particular old hobby. One of the first things you learn about the 45 is that many of The Redcoats were in fact Scottish. The Argyll Militia,The Royal Scots(Pontuis Pilutes Bodyguard) The North British Fusiliers(Ayrshire),Gardiners Dragoons,The Glasgow Militia,The Cameronians, The Black Watch. Add to that Dutch,German, and French Hueganots and The 45 is not so clear cut as it would at first seem. There were English County and Household Regiments there they were by no means alone however. There is a recorded incident at Ruthven of a Sergeant Molloy and a limited number of men defending The Barracks against a Superior Jacobite force when this was I do not know. The Jacobite's later burned the place. Dragoons inccidentaly could function as cavalry or infantry being 'armed to the teeth,' with sword and pistol,as well as musket and bayonet as opposed to cavalry carbine.
Thank you, John, for the wonderful little tour of the barracks. Your presentation is great, as you narrate the history of the area. Perhaps someday I will be able to actually visit Scotland. Cheers from Texas.
Beautiful scenery John ..and as usual excellent story telling .. I suspect someone as left the gate open letting the horses lose to wander .. your appreciation around them was quite amusing … just as well I wasn’t there or I would of ribbed you big time … 😆🤭
Love this, so interesting. The effort it must have taken to construct this Garrison, just amazing. Also can’t help but chuckle about the “provisions”. How times have changed. 😅
Thanks Tanja! The surveyors who came to design the garrison were actually kidnapped, but in the moment I forgot to mention that bit… very much the lawless highlands 😂
Fascinating history, It wasn’t until my 68th year for me to learn the history of Jack and Jill. Now I will share this knowledge with my 8 and 10 year old granddaughters. Thanks again John, Kevin
Brilliant I wish we had known about the Barracks and final days of the Jacobite rebellion. Thank you so interesting. I'm Engish, my husband was part Scottish and would have loved your videos. I'll tell the kids to watch.
Was für eine schöne location.Ich bin dankbar für das Video um die Geschichte der Jacobiter zu erfahren sowie über die Rebellion des Bonnie Prince Charlie und natürlich ein Teil von James Fraser - Outlander - Geschichte.
My husband and I were here a couple times when we stayed at our holiday lodge in Aviemore.....I soooo love this whole place but never knew the knowledge you have shared...Thank you John!
Enjoyed this tour very much with my morning coffee. I love Scottish history as it is a great part of my ancestry. A physical tour of Scotland is on my bucket list but until then...
What a fascinating, hugely informative tour this is, Sir! I love the way you relate the history and can really feel the energy of the inhabitants, the intense tensions of the times. thank you for bringing it all so alive! And the horses are a magical and poignant element to the stunning scene. With Gratitude!
For all the years i have lived up here, I've never been to visit. It's one of those things that's on your doorstep but never go to see. I'll be going sometime soon after watching this. Thank you for a great video.
Thanks for bringing us along for the ride 🐴 😜 Seriously, phenomenal tour such a heart wrenching end with the rallying Jacobites left to go their own ways and to know what happened. Thanks for sharing!
the failure of the 45 can 100pc be put down to L G Murray - that is one man Charles was right in never forgiving - but to those who might only know of Culloden Charles Edward Stuart makes the easy target .
A great tour, John. I can’t figure out why we’ve never stopped there when visiting family. Driven past. Lol. Definitely worth a visit next time. Thanks for the history of the barracks and area.
That was really great, love History just found the channel looking forward to seeing more, I'm Scottish from Glasgow. Thanks fir a great vlog wonderful scenery 👍 ❤
Really enjoyed this, we saw it from the highway but couldn’t figure out how to get to it so it was really nice to see this video and hear the history of it. Thanks!
Thanks, John, for a Great tour and some wonderful sights. You seem to be a well of information and local knowledge love hearing about the beautiful country of Scotland and hope to visit before I pass from this world.
They are beautiful horses. Interesting how Jacobite came about. I love this castle . What a shame how all the wood got burned., in all these castles. Now I realize why these castles are ruins now. Could these ever be reconstructed, I wonder. Lovely views all around the fort. Thank you
That was fascinating, thank you. I’ve been a huge Outlander fan since the 1990’s and love seeing locations from that timeframe. I’d love to go to Scotland but with my age and financial limitations I’m sure I’ll never make it. Videos like this are the best I can hope for.
A lovely tour, John. If I ever get over there to take a tour with you I promise to save you from any horses we might meet. Negotiate your safe passage for a small discount. Good job and I look forward to your next video!
I was with you family in Scotland in 2006, we went to Culleden. I wish we had known about this place. There is a simila place in West Sussex with houses from various centuries brought from various areas of South of England. Well worth a visit if your down this end of the country. Also not far from there is the remains of a Roman Villa. Half term is a good time to visit both places with lots of activities.
Your country has been on my bucket list for a long time I would like to think that one day I could see its beauty in person. But as you say, Och well. Cheers!
I’ve been right by Ruthven Barracks, but it was not a stop on our tour ☹️. My husband has gotten to explore there, though, when he was in the Kingussie area for a Clan MacPherson gathering. Even though I did not get to explore Ruthven, I did stay overnight in Newtonmore, just a wee bit down the A86. And, though it was after regular hours, I had arranged for a private tour of the Clan MacPherson Museum in Newtonmore. That area has a very special meaning for our family.
Cheers John! Thoroughly enjoyed your Tour, so much to learn about your beautiful Country. As an Englishwoman, I, like many other kids, were only taught about English history, we knew about Bonnie Prince Charlie, due to old films shown at the Saturday morning cinema, Rob Roy comes to mind. Queen Elizabeth 1 Cousin, Marybeing imprisoned and ultimately killed, I only learnt that she spent 20 years in fancy jail houses, from a TV programme. We've been the subjects of the propaganda machine for hundreds of years, still are lied to every day. I trust that you will set the record straight John. Your channel should soon grow with videos like these, AMAZING!! Will you be doing Sterling Castle? How on earth they built that is way beyond my imagination it seems to cling to the rocks! We've driven past it many times but as a wheelchair user, the only way to see around there, is through someone else's eyes, though they certainly wouldn't be as knowledgeable as you. I look forward to learning so much more from you John, you missed your calling as a Teacher and that's a fact. Much love chez 😘😘😘
Awesome video! Great history with beautiful scenery ❤ my 8th Great Grandfather was in the Battle of Dunbar. He was captured at 17 and sent to the colonies after the awful march they endured. He made it. I really enjoy the history. Feel bad Grandpa never saw his parents or siblings again 😢
What an amazing place. I bet the room above the bakery was the warmest of the lot!! Has anything ever been found in or around the area? Bet you'd love to detect there - though I don't suppose it's allowed. Thanks for taking us around 🙂
This was amazing to hear. Even in the state it is in it is so beautiful. I just looked up Caledonian Forest- OMG so beautiful! I think you did a tour there- I'm going to go check. If not I hope you do. Thank you for this beautiful tour and such interesting stories. I have loved hearing about Scotland and England my whole life. Such amazing history. WONDERFUL VIDEO in every way. Thanks. from an 81 yr old granny, who has deep Scottish roots. I'm in Montana, USA.

I know it well Maureen. I thought the ground might be boggy so skipped it after all the flooding. Hope it brought back happy memories
