Great videos! Have a question regarding the ilx-650, can you play videos from the usb port using a usb memory? or from youtube app when connected to the phone? Did you find a way to change the splash screen in this unit?
Edykai You can play videos through the USB port with USB. You can’t use UA-cam app. It’s not supported by CarPlay or Android Auto. If you get a unit with wireless mirroring and you have an android device then you can use UA-cam. Splash screen cannot be changed on this one unfortunately. Spoke to alpine and they confirmed this for us a little while back.
Hi, choosing between this ILX-W650E or the ILX-702D. This one is new, updated and has fast charging (3A USB), while the 702D has DAB+. Please advise. (Wanted the Halo9, but I'm too cheap :D)
Ephreim Pangilinan Hey mate. Hmm I prefer the 702D due to the user interface, I think it looks better and you can change the splash screen for further integration. Plus the DAB feature. All around better build quality but it is more expensive and for the price point this is a great little unit + the cool amp feature. So if you don’t care about DAB and splash screen I’d go for it.
Thinking about getting this unit since I already have alpine speakers, but I’m also looking at the kenwood dmx7706s and the pioneer 1400nex. Which would you recommend as best bang for buck?
TheeKenEB Toss up between this and the Kenwood. Both capacitive touch is a big one. The Kenwood has more features like wireless CarPlay and mirroring. So bang for buck the Kenwood but I’ve always had a soft spot for alpine also if you go the alpine with add on amp you won’t beat the sound (without adding external amps)
Hey mate, Thanks for the Vid. Obviously I am a bit late to the party here, but I just got mine installed and my android phone OPPO A91 is getting the old 'device not supported' message. Did you experience that at 14:40 with some of the other android phones you tried? Any ideas on a fix? Looks like the phone and head unit are up to date with software so I'm at a loss. Any ideas would be fantastic. Cheers.
Try a new cable, then try cable plugged directly into the unit and if you’re using a USB retention or extension delete it. That phone needs high current and this unit does not put it out
Hey man, great review. I was hoping if you could suggest me something. I have Rockford Speakers for both front and rear which states 60 Watts RMS / 120 Watts Peak at 4 Ohm. Considering Alpine has those sick amplifiers, which amplifier would you recommend is appropriate for the power of my speakers?
Mate you cannot go wrong with the Alpine KTA-450. it will mount directly to the back of this unit. Considering the speakers aren't drawing that much power you'll be fine with that and it will improve the sound drastically.
Sampath Basanagoudar Thank you 😊. Dash cam no. You can only use a normal front or rear camera. Kenwood have a dash cam that works with head units but only selected Kenwood units. If you wanted to try and hard wire it you could make it work but I would be cautious when doing so. For that car you’ll need custom work done as it doesn’t look like there is off the shelf facia etc!
MarstaJNZ hi mate! The 702D is a better unit. Has DAB+ and has the ability to have the splash / opening screen changed (we have a video showing how). This unit (650e) is awesome as well but doesn’t have those features. The 702D is the unit I would choose and still recommend to our customers today.
Spec Hi yes there usually is a way to do this. It’ll be in settings and FM/AM settings usually FM step. Might even be on the radio screen itself. Or you’ll have to manually program them.
Hey mate. Been watching a few of your reviews and struggling to put all the info together and choose one. With your experience with all of them, what would you recommend in the $400-$600 range. Apple carplay is the only main requirement I’m after, and already has external amps power sub/speakers. Cheers for any help
Ben Hooper Hey mate! If you’re just after CarPlay and something cheap go for the Pioneer AVH-Z5250bt . If budget allows I’d go for this Alpine unit, we’ve been installing them a lot lately. They’re awesome little units. Both units won’t have a problem with the current amp situation :)

@@TheFittingBay hello I just got this stereo and I cant connect my bluetooth, it does not let me click on the the "bluetooth setup" button and also dont let me click on the "system settings" would u know how to fix this? Thank you
Eduardo Hernandez Park brake wire needs to connected. Just try again with the park brake (hand brake) on. If it doesn’t work. @@TheFittingBay So I have had the Alpine for about a year, but after upgrading my iPhone to the iPhone 12 I have had some issues with the quality of voice calls. It seems that some sort of sound prcocessing kicks in and kills the volume of the phone call so that I have to turn the volume way up just to hear the caller and then it's badly distorted. However, music playback remains perfect. My old IPhone 7 continues to work well phone calls and music playback. The new iPhone SE also battles with voice calls on the Alpine. All iPhones mentioned work perfectly on my other car's Pioneer. So the issue is defently one between this particular Alpine model and new iPhones. Alpine released new firmware to address this issue... butit actualy seems to make no difference. Have you heard from any other customers battling with this?
Andrew Talamantes I plugged directly into the unit. The unit comes with an extension, which is what you would have plugged into. It probably hasn’t been properly inserted into the unit. A lot of people have that issue
The Fitting Bay thanks for the quick reply. I had it installed by the store and for some reason the “CarPlay” option won’t pop up. Even when I plug my iPhone charger Into both USB ports in my car so I’m really worried. I don’t see a USB plug in you mentioned so I’m guessing that’s behind the radio and I should ask them to fix it?
The Fitting Bay I also was never given an “extension” or at least I don’t see one. I’m guessing the extension is behind the unit where I can’t see it? Or do I buy the extension Separately?
Andrew Talamantes Hey mate what car is it? Sometimes the USB retention harnesses are not used. Open the glove box have a look for a USB plug on a cable. Also check the centre console. They would have run it somewhere. You need to plug into that for carplay. To use genuine USB spots you either need a retention harness or some small modification. Let me know :)
The Fitting Bay it is a 2007 Ford Mustang V6 and I have an IPhone 10 so I think it should work. The employee mentioned they knew they needed to use a harness for my car so I thought it would work but have tried everything on my end to make “CarPlay” pop up. It even says CarPlay is enabled on my setting but the widget doesn’t pop up. I’m going to check back with them In the morning and hopefully it works out.
Zane Paterson yep it can be run to the glove box easily, or centre console etc and it’s just a female plug then you plug your iPhone / android cable into it :)
jcmedinaceli Yes it will. There will be some additional parts for this to work. - Fascia panel - steering wheel control harness - amp retention harness These will allow the unit to fit, work with genuine controls and of course retain factory amp / speakers / subwoofer.
G’day mate. Thanks for all your great work with these videos. Can you tell me which you think is better between this and the new pioneer DMH-Z5350BT? Cheers, josh
Josh Splitter Hey mate! Thank you. I have not yet done the review on the new pioneer unit! We will have it up soon though! The new 5350 seems to have the same UI as the 52 but with a capacitive touch which is a huge leap for Pioneer. However, I’d still go with Alpine as they have always been the premium product leader.
The Fitting Bay Ok great thx. Have you fitted many systems to 80 series landcruisers? Would be interested in getting something setup with the alpine unit and the KTA-450 and speaker upgrade.. Obviously the head unit and power pack are pretty straightforward but I would like to try and keep the original speaker positions and door trims etc looking neat and as factory as possible as I’m a bit of a purist.. Have you had much experience with these and what would be your recommendations? Thx man
Josh Splitter Yep completely agree RE: head unit and power pack. Yep we’ve done heaps of 80 series. We can keep the speakers in factory location. Just go with decent speakers and you’ll get the most out of the whole setup. Shoot me an email info@aesonline.com.au and we can discuss further.
Hey bro, I’ve bought one of these and once i plugged in replacing my factory stereo in my 2014 nissan sentra, they sounded like cheapo trash. Bass are weak, mids and highs were like mixed up. I havent got any amp to test the rca output yet. Do you have such experience as well? Thanks in advance.
Ian O'Meara hello! How was your experience with Autobarn? That’s interesting. Have you tried resetting the unit. Just turn the car off and then turn it back on after a couple of minutes. Check the volume on your phone is turned up (for bluetooth) and CarPlay, no sound either? That’s very odd. Let me know once you’ve tried these things. I’ll do some more research
Nafees Imtiaz Yes. You need to buy these things - - Fascia - Steering wheel control adapter - antenna adapter - reverse camera retention (if applicable) Then you need to remove the old radio. Plug in the steering wheel control adapter. Hard wire it to the head unit. Along with antenna and r cam. Fit the head unit into the fascia. Re-install it with the new head unit. Pretty straight forward but difficult if you have no experience with this stuff. The videos will help a lot. Check out the video we did in the nissan dualis . Same process.
kswift672000 Did you install the unit or have it installed? The park brake wire is either not connected or is connected to the park brake (try with hand brake on) if that doesn’t work it’s probably not connected and that’s why you’re having issues

Plus the DAB feature.
All around better build quality but it is more expensive and for the price point this is a great little unit + the cool amp feature. So if you don’t care about DAB and splash screen I’d go for it.
@@TheFittingBay Thank you! I'll look into it. Hopefully I can make up my mind soon. :)
That phone needs high current and this unit does not put it out
Can you change and have visual on the satellite radio screen light when using it on CarPlay??
charles williams As in listen to CarPlay / maps but not be in CarPlay?
Hey man, great review. I was hoping if you could suggest me something. I have Rockford Speakers for both front and rear which states 60 Watts RMS / 120 Watts Peak at 4 Ohm. Considering Alpine has those sick amplifiers, which amplifier would you recommend is appropriate for the power of my speakers?
Mate you cannot go wrong with the Alpine KTA-450. it will mount directly to the back of this unit. Considering the speakers aren't drawing that much power you'll be fine with that and it will improve the sound drastically.
@@TheFittingBay Thanks for your feedback man. Really appreciate it!
Hey Nathan, great video!!! I had some queries though... can we use dash cam as secondary camera? Can we install this product in 2015 Hyundai Sonata?
Sampath Basanagoudar Thank you 😊. Dash cam no. You can only use a normal front or rear camera. Kenwood have a dash cam that works with head units but only selected Kenwood units. If you wanted to try and hard wire it you could make it work but I would be cautious when doing so. For that car you’ll need custom work done as it doesn’t look like there is off the shelf facia etc!
It won’t let me click on the Bluetooth button on the stereo please help
TYLER Check park brake wire :)
The Fitting Bay yeah thanks man I figured it out I’ve just never had to do that before on a stereo
Hi Alpine iLX-W650E or ilx-702D? Whats better? Or even a better recommendation with something simlilar price
@@TheFittingBay Thanks for the reply
Will this unit play mp4 videos through usb ?
sea monkey Yep - these are the video files it can play: MP4/AVI/WMV/MOV
Hi, I just bought and fitted this head unit in my ranger . But the Bluetooth does seem to be working . Any Ideas
Dave Rieck Go into bluetooth on the head unit, search devices, wait, click your phone when it comes up. Make sure your Bluetooth is on :)
@@TheFittingBay I am unable to click Bluetooth setup
Can this be installed on a triton mn 2015?
Sure can :)
Hi do you know if there's a way to change radio frequency from odd to even?
Spec Hi yes there usually is a way to do this. It’ll be in settings and FM/AM settings usually FM step. Might even be on the radio screen itself. Or you’ll have to manually program them.
Are there two models of this type. ILX-W650 ...& .. ILX-W650E. ???
Conrad Wiliame The 650 is this unit for the US and the 650E is for here in Australia.
The Fitting Bay ..cheers thanx.
how much the equalizer also where u based what cost to put in a fascia and this stereo u number be great thx
darren apple Hey mate jump on www.aesonline.com.au this is my business and all our Contact details are there.
Hey could you make this video a LITTLE darker? Thanks.
Tony Should of gone to spec savers
Hahahahaha hahahahaha
Please do your iOS 13 car play video. Getting this installed next week!
Chris Brideaux ua-cam.com/video/CqrTV8rT35g/v-deo.html
Awesome mate! Where is it getting done
Thanks for the reply man. Ended up getting talked into the iLX-702D by the local car audio joint. Great bit of gear
Ben Hooper Awesome unit man and has digital radio. We have a video showing how to change the opening / splash screen, if it hasn’t already be.en done. Enjoy the unit 👍🏽👍🏽
Yep already watched it and hopefully will get it done this week. Great little mod!
Is there a way to turn off the display?
I don’t think so. You can turn the unit off but I don’t think you can turn display off only
Is it compatible with the KTP-445A power pack?
Rigo Trujillo Yes it is!
What does the handbrake wire do?
Stops you using cool features when it’s not on
How do you use your usb cable if it’s in the back of the unit
Extension supplied with the unit :)
What's the difference between the ilx-650 and the ilx-650e?
smitty2jones Same unit. Just different part numbers for different parts of the world
@@TheFittingBay hello I just got this stereo and I cant connect my bluetooth, it does not let me click on the the "bluetooth setup" button and also dont let me click on the "system settings" would u know how to fix this? Thank you
Eduardo Hernandez Park brake wire needs to connected. Just try again with the park brake (hand brake) on.
If it doesn’t work. You need to find the park brake wire and connect it directly to ground (GND) wire.
If it was done at a shop. They will need to do it for you.
Also, if you are trying with iPhone. Try to turn the phone off completely and then on again. And try again. New IOS having some Bluetooth issues
Will I be able to install this in my Toyota Yaris 2008?
Would you recommend this or the sony XAV-AX7000?
I can’t for the life of me connect the Bluetooth to my iPhone XS, stuck to USB. How did you get Bluetooth working
Sean Goulden Hey mate! Go settings>Bluetooth settings> pair device> search. Let the unit search for devices and when it finds your phone connect that way :)
@@TheFittingBay I can’t click the Bluetooth in setup, it’s not highlighted
@@zachali8347 park brake wire to ground will fix that
Great video! Very informative, I really like the look of this stereo and I’m considering on getting it, but one thing that’s holding me back is no CD player, I know in this day and age that not many people listen to CD’s anymore but I still do! Not the end of the world but I’d still like one, do you know if the Alpine DVE-5300 would connect to this at all?
Seb Bosworth-Davies Thanks for the feedback :).
Unfortunately it will not work together. The DVD player has a HDMI output, this unit does not have a HDMI input.
Maybe look at the ilx-702d as it has HDMI input 😊😊
The fitting bay Thanks for the reply and answering my question :) will definitely look into the ilx-702d
Seb Bosworth-Davies No problem. If you have any other questions don’t hesitate
Great review! Thanks for this. I want to fit CarPlay to my Kluger and wanted to know I f you were too choose between this unit and the Pioneer dmh-z5150bt, which would you choose? Cheers.
Adam Butchart Thank you for the feedback!
I would go with this unit, alpine made quality, capacitive touch screen (high quality) and all round great unit as well as that add on amplifier pack which will really improve the sound quality, you can add this pack on later if you wish also but there’s more options with this unit :)
Nathan Stephens - many thanks!!
What did you plug the iPhone cord into? I just bought this and tried plugging mine in and it didn’t work
Andrew Talamantes I plugged directly into the unit.
Does the Apple CarPlay work through Bluetooth? Because you used a USB. Or does the wire come through the head unit somehow? Thanks
Zane Paterson Only USB/wired CarPlay. USB comes out from the rear with an extension
The Fitting Bay okay thank you so the USB comes through pretty easily?
Zane Paterson yep it can be run to the glove box easily, or centre console etc and it’s just a female plug then you plug your iPhone / android cable into it :)
Does it fit for toyota rav4 2013? Thanks heaps
John roel Domugho Yes it does 😊 you’ll some parts. Check out www.aerpro.com
for android auto, is it a wireless connection?
JayPerezOfficial No My friend it is not
Hi. Would my oem rockford subwoofer work with this unit? 2010 Evo X
jcmedinaceli Yes it will. There will be some additional parts for this to work.
- Fascia panel
- steering wheel control harness
- amp retention harness
These will allow the unit to fit, work with genuine controls and of course retain factory amp / speakers / subwoofer.
The Fitting Bay thanks for the quick reply. Subscribed
jcmedinaceli Thank you 😃
Thanks for doing the review, much appareciated!
So you can change the splash screen on the iLx-650e?? I've been told you can'y????
Michael Gigliotti after further research we found you cannot :)
Also, I live in Brisbane, where would I be able to get this installed to my Honda Civic 2007
Zane Paterson Not 100% sure for Brisbane. Just google head unit installation near me and look at reviews
opposite lock in ipswich fitted mine
Would this fit a 2012 Mitsubishi ASX
Russell Young Yes. Jump on Aerpro.com.au and put you vehicle details in and it will show you parts needed.
Can this be controlled with a remote?
Nope 👎
So this radio comes with a rear view camera? Or just the plug to support it if you buy one?
Jason Loera Just the plug to support 😊
The Fitting Bay which backup camera do you recommend?
Jason Loera Alpine make some great ones but they’re pricey.
The Parkmate cameras are pretty good too.
Gator ones are rubbish.
la resolucion de video para el w650 cual es ?
Ng Chee Sern not at all man. Is the sound system in the nissan all stock? No external amp etc?
@@TheFittingBay Yes, everything are stock. I only replaced the HU, no external amp, just the HU powering the speakers.
Ng Chee Sern Very strange id get it looked at asap

Ian O'Meara Awesome! Where are you having it done?
The Fitting Bay Autobarn Hoppers Crossing
Ian O'Meara Cool! I used to do some contracting work there. If you have any good or bad feed back let me know!
Good evening I had alpine fitted today radio works but no sound from blue tooth or Apple play can you help
So no inbuilt amp to power speakers?
Yes but half the power.
lol seen A-1 exhaust and there is a place near me called that 👀

Can you mirror the screen?
TheFewmr2 Not on this unit unfortunately. Some units you can mirror if it has a video or hdmi input but this unit does not have those features.

does this unit come with pandora or Spotify?
onepickymen1 Spotify through CarPlay and Android Auto. Pandora I’m not sure , don’t think so.
@@TheFittingBay i. Need to install this system on Honda CR-V 2016. Can you please let me know how i can install it ?
Nafees Imtiaz Yes. You need to buy these things -
- Fascia
- Steering wheel control adapter
- antenna adapter
- reverse camera retention (if applicable)
Then you need to remove the old radio.

The park brake wire is either not connected or is connected to the park brake (try with hand brake on) if that doesn’t work it’s probably not connected and that’s why you’re having issues
Very helpful thank you 🙏
Does it have wireless Apple Carplay (nooooo wires to connect). No one knows there is two different type of Carplay now. I hate cable cause I have a wireless charger for future iPhones.
Scotchy Scotchy scotch Noooo this one is NOT wireless sorry! It needs to be plugged in.

I watched the review of five star car stereo on the same unit then watched this review and it's clear as day that the person doing the review does not know anything about this unit. Knowledge on everything is poor, eg. The alpine start up blue screen right in the start of this video he says 'you can change it' not true you can't, right through the review he used the words 'I think' it's obviously clear he did not bother reading the info or even playing with the unit before making this video.
Can u bypass the hand brake as u must have in this video ?
SinbadJohn Yes sir > ua-cam.com/video/PAUm17NNXPM/v-deo.html
When I go to bluetooth and radio screen it won't let me open it
