What a real historical American machine of a guitar here. God bless.
Wow - a real monster. The kind of guitar that really inspires you to play. The archetypical D18.
You can say that again! Man, there’s nothing quite like an old D-18 in my book!
Killing me!!! Wow!
Man, they ain’t just killed me, but I reckon I’m probably ready for the embalming room now lol.
Sounds like a grand piano! Stellar sounding old machine! Clearly it has power for days but the clarity and balance are just killer. Great sparkle on the mids and highs to stand up under that big bass. That’s a real guitar right there!
Man I sure would like to have a couple of these L O L!
Man thats a weapon right there. That thing nearly killed me.
Man I tell you, my fingers are sore, and I very rarely have sore fingers lol. It is one of those instruments that you have to be in the room with, and spend a little time to really understand! 🤔
@@ShawnBrockMusic I don't think I can afford to understand how good that thing is lol. Most amazing guitar I've ever heard. And some Henderson's have stunned me but that thing is from another world.
Man you do such an excellent job playing and bringing out the traditional tones of these instruments!
I sure appreciate it, and I’m glad you took the time to watch. It has been a pleasure to have so many fine instruments on here.
Well, that's it really, isn't it? We're not going to hear any better-sounding Martin D-18 than that beauty imho.
That guitar simply has everything you could wish for in the sound and volume dept, and Shawn, your playing is wonderful.
I could watch and listen all day!
That’s very kind of you my friend, and I certainly appreciate it. Regarding the guitar, Lord help me, man, my words are very inadequate to describe it. Yes, it is definitely on the top shelf for sure!
This a great sonding guitar.
This one for sure exemplifies everything I want in a guitar. 😊
Great God in heaven above at the BASS! Just wow!
You said it! It’s just one of those things with time I guess…
I just listened to a tone test comparison video of 2 guitars of the same boutique brand - mahogany vs sinker mahogany. Some day perhaps you could have the opportunity do do the same wood comparison video, given your affinity for hog. The difference is quite subtle but with your ears it may be a fascinating treat for all of us here Shawn. My dreadnought is sinker & to me it is hog thru & thru.
Man it sure would be a lot of fun to do one on the new 37 Authentics, One with sinker and one without. I would still like to do a 37 side by side with a 39 as well.
🔥🔥🔥
Great video Shawn!!!!!!! That is a VERY special guitar, perfectly balanced & you can tell that it was loved & cared for!!!!!!! I'll bet it weighs exactly as much as a bluebird feather. You can scallop braces, torrefy tone woods & varnish finish your newly built guitars till Gabriel blows his trumpet, but you will NEVER replicate that loved, played-in, aged, tone & balance of a prewar Martin!!!!!!!
You said it brother! You just can’t replace age, no matter what we do.
My favorite of all videos. As good as I ever heard. Wow 👍
Jeff I sure appreciate you watching sir, and agree with you wholeheartedly on the guitar. Man that was a fun one to play.
@@ShawnBrockMusic thanks, I'm like a kid in candy store when I hear those old acoustic guitars through the headphones. I can just imagine the way it would thrill you playing them. It's amazing how good the new guitars with the Torrified tops sounds too. I doubt I'll get to play one or own one but I can still listen and salivate 😁
@@jeffbeliew6192 it sure is a huge thrill man. I have always loved playing these old ones, but it seems like the older I get, the more I appreciate them and the opportunity to encounter them.
@@ShawnBrockMusic yes sir , and I enjoy your picking as well.
@@ShawnBrockMusic check out my UA-cam channel when you get a chance and subscribe if you like it. The telecaster I am playing on there I built out spare parts on ebay, and it turned out to my #1 go to ax. Sweet sounding tele with lots of sustain with the brass nut and saddles I put on it.
With no finish remaining in the armrest area, which is a tad unusual, this guy probably didn't spend a lot of time looking at the guitar in favor of "getting to it." I'm guessing rodeo belt buckle as well. LOL. Aside from those adornments, it sure has a mature voice. You are a lucky man my friend.
You’re an amazing guitarist.
Thank you very much sir, I sure appreciate that man.
Good lawd thing sounds awesome.
Man I’ll tell you, it is just awfully hard to beat.
What a player, beautiful touch, nice guitar too, but what a player.
You are too kind sir, and I will give the guitar all of the credit lol. Man I appreciate you watching very much.
Powerful message and very good playing. If you loved a Martin mahogany back for so long, especially an old one, we have to trust your judgment.
Thank you very much my friend. I am just pretty partial to mahogany it seems. I sure appreciate you taking the time to watch, and for your kindness.
WOW! Awesome sound! Those vintage-guitar dealers chose “the right man for the job”.
I sure appreciate it man, I’m pretty lucky to get to try these things out. I don’t know that I am the right man for the job, I might have been the only one who would take it lol.
Vintage Martin The King
Brother you have got that right! To tell you the truth, this was my favorite vintage guitar we have had on.
This video did it. I’m so jealous of you Shawn! Lol. What I’d give to be able to play some of these guitars, if even for a short time.
Man you get down here anytime you like, and play them as long as you want! It would be an honor!
@@ShawnBrockMusic you are too awesome for words Shawn. I’ll take you up on that offer someday, it’d be an honor to pick with you!
Dale's got a 7 day grace period - Just buy it lol
@@derekbertman9106 lol... for what? $100k?
@@BradleyMcTaggart $39k! Just put it on your credit card
Sweet
I still remember that instrument very fondly!
Wow! If that was 1 3/4” I’d be in a real crisis! 😳
Man, I am so completely with you on that. I have poor impulse control anyhow, and that would push me over the edge lol.
Good lord!
Great demo as always Shawn. Awesome guitar, I don't even want to know the price. I'm lying, I'm always curious. Bet you wouldn't trade your new Edmonds 18 for it would you. Bahahahahah!!! Bet you would. 😉 EE
Man I wouldn’t trade my Edmonds for anything, but I suppose if someone wanted to trade even, Jimmy might would come and shoot me if he found out I didn’t lol. He has owned some old ones like this, and holds them in pretty high regard like the rest of us. I’m not sure what the price would be on this, I haven’t heard that quite yet, but I’m guessing somewhere between $37,000 and $40,000, but again, ain’t sure exactly.
My Guess was 30-35000 too. It’s good to know you think that highly of you Edmond D18. I can’t wait to get mine. Seems like as fast as time passes anymore it won’t be that long. Take care. EE
Now thats a Monster....Huge bottom end, loud, clear, projective, resonant...and that year was built with rear shifted scalloped bracing, 1-11/16" nut..Looks tough but boy what a sound. Still using XS and TAD42?
Yep… still XS and the 42; no string or pick revolutions have happened over the last two days.
Beautifully smooth playing. Great tone. Shawn, please, what is your signal chain on your recording? Looks like you have a couple Neumann KM-184 microphones? Are you going into a pre amp or a mixer or computer interface?
Thank you very much my friend, I sure appreciate it. This guitar will hold its own with anything! It sort of carried me along lol.
@@ShawnBrockMusic Shawn, please, what is your signal chain on your recording? Looks like you have a couple Neumann KM-184 microphones? Are you going into a pre amp or a mixer or computer interface?
@@roadworthy1102 yep, I started using the Neumanns all of the time, because I figured if people could afford these types of guitars, they could likely afford those microphones. I am using my interface as a preamp, and I actually did a video showing the simplicity of my set up. Here it is if you have any interest in watching it. It seems like most folks didn’t lol. ua-cam.com/video/J0wZvyxdcbQ/v-deo.html
wow
You certainly can’t use torrefied wood and then spray 40oz of lacquer on it and expect vintage tone
Yes Sir! Preach on it! I wish others knew that, or at least cared…
Nah i like new ones for the clean gloss, new smell, and for only being $2500-7000 :)
Hard to beat something new I reckon lol.
Nerd question…what gauge string do you string these vintage Martin’s with?
Thus far, all have been D’Addario XS 13-56, but I think 12-52 would have worked great most of the time.
Ruined the value by cleaning up the arm sweat area. Cleaning petina is a no no.
I don’t clean them, so it has nothing to do with me. If you don’t mind some cracks, and bondo on the side, Carter Vintage has one for $37,500. cartervintage.com/products/martin-d-18-1939-nd
On this one the decision to protect the wood was easy. The finish was gone. Not doing anything was lack of maintenance. Willie Nelson luthier works to protect the wood so it can remain playable at Willies request. Do nothing to protect the wood will take you to total devaluation in your next 50 years.
