I had the pleasure of playing this Atkin a few days ago. Everything about it was better than my Martin D35, despite the expected differences in sound. The Atkin is an absolute cannon, that’s for sure.

I have a slight suggestion for the editor of the videos - maybe you guys could add a small caption of what guitar is currently played? When the headstocks are pretty much identical it’s really hard to tell sometimes which one is being played.

Well, all my life I have been a Martin guy. My main guitar is a Martin (1971 000-18). Then the two of you come along with this episode of Guitar Battles and blow my mind! The Atkins had a warmer sound, the Martin had a brighter sound. I typically like a guitar with a warmer sound. For me it's always been Martin, as I stated. So after watching this video, I played it for a second time. The second time with my eyes closed. And I'm kicking myself for saying this, but I think the Atkins WINS. I can't believe I just said that. What these companies are doing now with baking the tops is a very unique thing. I'm sort of old school so I'd rather have my top aged naturally over the years. That's why I will always go for a vintage guitar rather than a new guitar. But in this case, I really wouldn't mind owning a new Atkins. So, thank you for making me angry LOL. But I will get over it LOL. Thanks for another great Guitar Battles. You guys take care and be safe. And one more thing, what is 3600 Euros in US dollars? Thanks again, catch you later.

Haha yes! Always happy to provide something new to ponder about ;) I look forward to your comments on every upload we make, this one didn't disappoint! 3600 euro's would be roughly 3500 dollars if you also deduct the Dutch VAT that's included in the price.

I have a 39 authentic. I think the rear shifted bracing is a big difference, versus the forward shifted on the Atkins. IMO shifting the bracing forward (37 style) will add low end response, but the rear shifted 39 has its own sound.

Yeah the Akins is more of a soup'd up current D18 (2012 on) in specs.

Atkin is warm and rich, Martin seems clear and present. Both gorgeous.

I've played both side by side. The Atkin blows the D-18 away. Hence why I have the Atkin now 😁 The case got damaged traveling with the Atkin and they sent me a new one and just asked to return the old one so they could use it as a spare. Even customer service is amazing from Atkin. Plus Martin's warranty is void in the UK. Absolute joke considering the price. My Atkin is no.1039 so you really are getting something a little bit special not many people have. Hence the usual 4 to 6 months you sometimes have to wait for one. Atkin all the way 👌🏼

I've played both side by side. The D-18 sounds more like a D-18 (duh!). Atkin is too mid-rangey and boxy for my liking and doesn't have the 'Martin sound'. Nice try though.

I’ve played hundreds of Matins, new and vintage. I own two Martins. I’ve been looking for a better guitar for 30 years. I found it with an Atkin D-37. It’s the best guitar I’ve ever played. I’m lucky to have a dealer within a few hours from me in the US.

This is like a comparison on specs between my Martin CS-Bluegrass-2016 and a Martin D-28 Authentic Aged 1937. Both are giving you the same sound, but the Bluegrass-2016 gives you a drop-in saddle, adjustable truss-rod, and modern features. The Authentic gives the look and feel of a 50,000 Euro guitar, but costs more to buy. I love Martin guitars, but I'm glad that I don't have to choose between these two. I love the video that you did recently with Paul Davids. Great comparison!

Martin is on another level , clarity balance , projection , dry sweetness that is expected of hog, Atkins is a nice sounding guitar too though just a little short of the Martin im afraid

IMHO the Atkin can't compete with the D18 here, which has a depth, richness, resonance and sweet clarity the Atkin can't match. As it should. For half the price, the Atkin is a very accomplished instrument. There are no losers here.

  • @d35s2

Thanks for the comparison. To my taste, both guitars are being played a bit too gentle. Maybe I should use headphones next time. I would like to know how they both compare when really being "attacked" :-). There is no power like this. I feel the Atkins sounds a little more open and a little warmer than the D18. I am a big Martin fan and still have 2 great ones and my wife loves her 1992 Martin M-36. I used to own a good Martin D18, but for my ears, they are lacking what I need to hear, and what my D35 and 1967 D35S give me: power. If I had to choose, I would go for the Atkin.

    • @thefellowshipofacoustics

Hey Bill, both were strung with 0.12's Martin SP. I used Dunlop Primetone bluegrass picks. Coen played with his fingers. - Maarten

The high fidelity of the Martin, note separation and overall tone is superb. But Atkin hold is own specially when it comes to picking. Given the price difference... Atkin is a very good choice... But, but..

      @easitax Рік тому +2

@@thefellowshipofacoustics yes I owned a Martin D18 Aged and found that not having an adjustable truss rod to be a bit of a pain to be honest. According to the Atkin website the D18 Essential does in fact have a two way adjustable rod ….. add in the slot in saddle and of course the price then the Atkin starts to look a good option except perhaps come sale time.

You know after watching this I'd love to see the rosewood comparison between the atkin d37 and the martin d28 authentic 37. Please please pretty please . I've been drawn to atkin for a while now and I've played the essential d ....those side by side I really thought the martin would just have the atkin nailed in a coffin ( not saying the atkin is a bad guitar no no no no ) I love the sound and look of the atkin so much more as the martin sounded very nice for sure but muddy in the mids. So the rosewood if you havent already done it it will help me decide as I'm going for the essential d for sure.
