Some major differences. Internationals are played during the European football season (which is ridiculously long) and generally the leagues take a week off to play matches. Another difference is those leagues are 90+ years old.
You can't compare a 15 year old league to leagues that are decades older and much more established.

If 20-35 year old players are wishing to spend their limited prime years trying to make as much money as possible in the IPL, then I don't blame them. The IPL has turned Cricket into a truly global sport. It has injected Cricket with the cash required to compete with other elite sports. Kids in countries where Cricket was unheard of (Sweden, Finland, Italy, Germany etc.) will turn to Cricket because of the IPL, not because of boring antiquated Test Cricket or even ODI cricket. For that we should thank the IPL as opposed to antagonise it.

What nobody mentioned was the FACT that cricket was near death's door until T20 came along. The ODIs was DEFINITELY keeping it on life support.
I'm not a fan of T20. I've always enjoyed ODIs and developed a taste for Test cricket as I aged. I DID play for my school in NZ in the early 70s (5/20 was my best, living up to the stereotypical Indian spinner).
HOWEVER, being starved of cricket here in the US and not having the luxury of subscribing to certain live broadcasts, nor the ability to maintain the time differences and a life, I HAVE been watching the T20 World Cup highlights. I never did before, nor take an interest in the IPL.
This T20 World Cup has stimulated an interest in the US among non expats. There's a serious movement to introduce cricket in the California high school system. That's a brilliant idea!
Plus, it's a sport that has little to no head trauma, almost zero fights, immediately ends hissy fits and strictly enforces the rules of the game. As compared to ice hockey as a prime example, where the umpire stands and watches 2 "players" perform rudimentary dentistry upon each other, much to the delight of the paying public. What a great example to set for young minds!
I just turned 65 and hope to see cricket become as popular as football ( 🙄 soccer) has become in the US.

What I see is bunch of people who are finding it hard to digest the success of the Indian Premier League. Besides the financial aspect, the contribution of IPL to revive cricket as sports is huge. I remember we were talking about reviving test cricket 6-7 years back, 50 Overs match seemed to long. Now with IPL, we've seen changes in all formats. They are more interesting. Besides, IPL has given Indian players who could not become part of the National team's a big platform. Players get exposure to international level cricket, and get opportunities directly to the National team. The same is for international players. I think haters need Burnol and are too sour and jealous. Give them some opportunity to make money from IPL, and they will suddenly tune in to a different radio channel.
Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket revived cricket in the late 70s and made ODI cricket big. Did Australia try to extend cricket past the Australian season or control the game worldwide? Nope.
