    You should put it head to head with the council tool woodcraft pack axe. I think it would be interesting to see how they compare to eachother given the price difference.

    Just recently bought the canoe axe a few weeks ago. I stripped the paint and applied boiled linseed oil and its such a nice little axe. Even was able to skin a squirrel with on the way out of the woods bow hunting today and i didnt want to come back empty handed lol.

    I believe Adler uses the same forge as Stihl, helko Werk, etc. I have this as the Stihl German axe - same handle, same head. Such an awesome tool!

    • @urbanlumberjack
      @urbanlumberjack  7 місяців тому +1

      That is really interesting! I’ve heard this before I’m trying to figure out if it’s true. I have seen several stihl axes made by oxe head. Oxe heads factory is based in Ramscheid, Adlers factory in Waghausel, and Helko in Wuppertal.
      It would certainly make economical sense if the companies consolidated forging into one factory or occasionally took orders from each other. The axes are different enough in forging, design, and materials though that I imagine the tooling would need to be changed quite a bit to accommodate it.
      I’m hoping to find out one way or the other and will share when/if that happens! Thanks for your comment!

      Just watched a video detailing the cooperation among Maine's axe makers over the last 100 years or so. It wouldn't be uncommon to see this same sort of resource sharing among the European makers; it only makes sense.@@urbanlumberjack

      @@urbanlumberjack not to mention the additional strength. I’d be willing to bet a sharp axe dropped blade first would cut right through those thin walled cap rivets. But yes 1000% sexier, I love hammer peened rivets.

    Great review! I used to take an axe or machete on the kayak down the old farm creek all the time for clearing limbs and splitting firewood, as soon as i saw the handle on the canoe axe i thought 'boom, they've nailed it!' What a great handle design and good choice of head pattern for the application. Rhinelands are an ideal small axe pattern. You know now youve gotta do a Canoe vs Bison test😁 Those splitter heads are cool too, you can actually get a sharp edge on em, pretty versatile. Love the new measurement units haha

    • @urbanlumberjack

      That’s a great point about the splitting pattern. When it’s that wide I’d hate to see the wood it gets stuck in! I really like the axe it is an awesome carver.

    Great review I still love my vintage axes but I’ve been looking at an Adler and very interested. Btw what is your pack you have there ? Very nice. I may have seen a video of you doing that it looks grwat

      not sure where but I think French or Swiss origin.

  • @grumpytrumpy8015
    @grumpytrumpy8015 4 місяці тому

    Just subscribed after watching your show on Council Tools and comparing the steel grades used. This Adler looks and sound like a nice axe but I found a site that said they use C45 steel. Do you feel this would be hard enough to hold an edge well if using on hardwoods. Thanks for the efforts you put into your shows.
    Regards Chris

    • @urbanlumberjack
      @urbanlumberjack  4 місяці тому +2

      Thanks for watching! I’ve used the axe hard carving alot of white and red oak for furniture pieces and handles. Even split wedges with it to see how it would do.
      It takes and holds a great edge, I’ve had no edge retention issues with it at all. As a comparison to higher carbon steels this is much less likely to chip and break.
      I’m finding German steels tend to favor 1050 and 1045 steels (equivalent to c50 and c45), and temper them for hard use. I have had no issues sharpening versus higher carbon steels, and these axes just don’t chip or roll. They are extremely low maintenance and reliable.

    • @urbanlumberjack
      @urbanlumberjack  8 місяців тому +1

      I believe they’re the same weight head so depends on your preference for handle length. Canoe axe is more capable but the hatchet is more portable. Can’t go wrong but my preference is for the canoe axe

    How does this c50 steel compare to the 5160 that council uses?

    • @urbanlumberjack
      @urbanlumberjack  8 місяців тому

      The Adler is C45, not sure if I said c50 in the video. The Adler holds a better edge than my Gransfors Scandinavian forest axe.
      5160 is going to be the better steel, both for hardness and edge retention. But 5160 axes are generally going to cost double this or more. The canoe axe has done everything I’ve asked it to do (carve chop split) and been very up to the task.
