Spent a few days back in October in the Mountains of North Georgia. We did some playing in the creek, chopped a few logs, and had a wonderful time.

awesome content! Thanks for sharing
I was lucky enough to find an HB double bit with a weight stamp. The weight stamp is much deeper than the branding! It even had it's own side of the axe cheeks. I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's pretty obvious you're right about collectors. The more stamps the better in that respect. If a company could say "we are removing the weight stamp to save money and spend it elsewhere in the process" and mean it that would be awesome. Like making the handle shaped a little better...but that never happens haha.
Let’s do it! We got your back brother!! Man, it’s not like these companies can’t afford it, similar to when US makers went to paper labels in the 80’s-90’s LOL.
I completely agree. Head weight stamps are pivotal. Not having them is completely a corporate answer to a problem that never existed.
Penny wise and pound foolish imo. Great video and excellent points! I subbed a few weeks back, you have quality content, sir!
You should link HB's email address in the description so we can all harass em 😎
I love this vid! Awesome historical discussion and couldnt agree more. I bought a HB 1.5kg for a mate earlier this year, and when it rocked up I noted straight away the missing weight stamps. The standard HB stamp arrangement with the logo, weight, and origin is pretty iconic and I thought it was just a fluke, to hear they're removing them on purpose is very disappointing. The stamp signifies pride in your work and an investment/advertisement into the future of the tool. Come on Hults Bruk! Your comment about us blokes remembering history based on the tools we use is spot on, whether its an individual remembering the hunt we cut our knuckle on or the human collective memory of the bronze age, iron age, computer age etc, tools are in our blood and ingrained in our evolution. If we were to lose society today and end up back in the forest, the first thing any human instinctively would do is pick up or craft some kind of tool/weapon, and from there we could rebuild an entire society. Tools were literally the catalyst for our claws and teeth getting smaller, bodies weaker, and brains larger, to the point where a modern human probably couldnt exist in nature without some kind of cutting and/or blunt-force tool Axe, anyone? Haha
I have two HBs. One is the Almike hatchet and when I received it to my surprise it was a new model without the weight stamp and the sheath was different. The pictures online were the old style. I was slightly confused and bummed.
I’ve read the same thing from a ton of people! I haven’t looked up who makes their sheaths now, but about five years ago I recall it was a North Carolina company, I think? Their sheaths were AWESOME quality. I hope they reconsider!
I agree. This is just corporations cutting costs and being cheap since the economy worldwide has been trash. They are short sighted though and especially premium brands really need to be completely uncompromising on quality. There will always be a market for the best of something.
Absolutely!!
I agree. Typical corporate stuff. I used to work in aerospace mfg and anytime there was a leadership change, they want to change stuff. They ask why you do things a certain way, and the answer is, thats the way we have always done it. If there is something that can be eliminated or changed to method that is worse but saves 2 cents theyll do it to justify their position.
Wow that’s wild. No wonder Boeing is struggling!
Will it stain the handle? I bought a cheap little camp axe and want to blue the head, but don’t want it to stain the hickory handle
I haven’t had any issues discoloring the handle but I’ve been careful to keep the blue on the steel. If concerned about it I would painters tape the handle
@ thanks for taking the time. I will do that and I’ll do the handle first with BLO and hopefully that will keep the blue from soaking into the wood if it does get past the tape.
I really love my Milano. I'm kind of on a Rinaldi kick at the moment. It's a completely different style of axe than American patterns. Thin grinds, no poll, but in return you get a huge cutting surface for a light weight axe. I also have the 700 gram Calabria and the "American" Boy's Axe. The Calabria is a wedgier pattern but still quite thin compared to American patterns. The steel they use is excellent for an axe as well. It's a super tough silicon manganese alloy at around 56-58 Rockwell. It's one of the reasons they can be ground so thin and still retain toughness. It's also super convenient being able to switch handles at will. I have 2 for my Milano (+ the stock one that I never really use anymore) that I easily carved myself. One shorter one out of White Oak for carving and hatchet like use, and one longer one out of Shagbark Hickory when I want more of a small axe. Rinaldis can be a little rough around the edges but there's a gem under the surface. Anyone thinking about a Rinaldi, just do it. They're very useful axes that are valuable in my collection
Nice! 14c and the older 12c are awesome. Ive got an old Gerber Prodigy in Sandvik 12c27 from before they switched to making it in 420HC. The Sandvik steels are great! Ps we gunna need to see a full Nessmuk review, preferably with a Wisconsin deer or two 😁
@kurts64 I don't have a Nessmuk, but I could definitely help you out with the Wisconsin deer 😁 It would just be with some different knives
Man I hope I’m that lucky! I’m definitely going to go out this fall. I didn’t know gerber used Sandvik steel that’s awesome! I’ve loved everything that’s come out of Sandvik, they seem like they have it dialed in
Let’s go hunting next fall! I’ll be in Green Bay
The irony is that the old hickory knives have better edge retention and durability than most of the so called tactical knives. 😂
14c28n is one of my absolute favorite stainless steels. Fine grained, very good corrosion resistance and very high toughness for a stainless steel. I really love how it sharpens, it can take an insane edge and it holds it pretty darn well. It really is a good all around steel. Especially for a "budget" stainless steel...
Agreed!
Damn I wish I would have seen this when I got my council tool boys axe
Always a great topic!
Looks like a great trip. I loved catching crayfish (as we say here) and little fish in a creek when I was a kid. Still do, ha ha. I need to get a Gransfors so badly, just so I can join in the arguments with my own opinion. Granted, probably not the best reason to buy an expensive axe.
What rivets do you use? A random kit from Amazon? Hopefully the one I ordered looks as good as these! I’m sick of sewing! Love the rivet idea much better
amzn.to/4g6WXjM this is pretty close to the ones I got. I just make sure they’re copper! Definitely recommend the setting and dome tool, and a decent ball peen hammer! So much easier than sewing
Yea, like that guy a few comments below me says…”one that won’t break as easily” LOL
I’m with him! Haha. If only it were that easy, right?
i can take 43 different guys
I use Brazilian Ipe for all my handles
Wow. I compared Brazillian Ipe to Hickory it’s amazing wood. It is roughly twice as hard, dense, elastic, and resistant to rupture as hickory. I would love to try that, and also spotted gum from Australia for tool handles.
I agree. Any straight grain hardwood should do pretty well. But I would leave Balsawood off of that list, because while it might be a straight grain and technically a hardwood, it really isn't gonna hold up in this job.
christians ruin everything
One that wont break easily
Just keep in mind that the densities are relative density. The density of one piece of oak will vary from another due to a number of factors. But I certainly learned something cool about axe handles :)
Yes for sure! I wanted to included some other stuff specifically on that, but ran out of time in the short!
Just get something hard as hell. I love how hickory looks on tools.
Absolutely!
Respectfully sir, replace what with who...excellent video...
Always appreciate your insight. Who makes your favorite axe handle?
@urbanlumberjack you have turned the tables sir...
@Brian2bears oh! Haha wasn’t trying to. Casterman handles look wonderful, and riven lumber is a great benefit to them. I’m always curious about who is doing what in the axe world
@@urbanlumberjack I do not disagree with that statement at all...
I like it, man! I I need to do the same. Who do you get your leather from?
I get the economy halves from Tandy. It’s a really good deal when they go on sale, best prices I’ve seen, and they have so many different types. I’m not quite skilled enough in leather working to try out the expensive stuff like cordovan or the really good saddle leathers but one day!
@urbanlumberjack Same. I'm just starting to embark on this journey into leather. I'm excited, though. I will say that
Awesome work, suits that head really well
Thank you!
Great job man !!
Thanks Joey! I’ve been reading the wood properties book quite a bit lately, thanks again for sending it!
That's a beauty!
Thank you!
Nice work sir! I hope to start leather working soon enough.
It’s a great companion skill for axes!
Nice...Buck 110?
It is! One of my favorites. Just put a new edge on it so enjoying it a lot
I spotted that also. In those days you could never forget which pocket your knife was in. Nice sheath build.
Classic blade! I noted the joker and the Mora on the bench what was the third one in the black sheath?
@kurts64 a buck 102! I’ve had it since I was 12 or 13, skinned my first few deer with it! Also gave my my first set of stitches 😀
@@urbanlumberjack nice!
Amazing song! Nicely done
Thank you!
I really like 14c28n steel. With walnut handles, that is a fantastic deal. I really enjoy Joker knives.
Good job mate!
Where were you all camping? I've been all over N. Georgia and this looks familiar but I can't pinpoint the area. Looks a lot like the lake Conasauga area.
I love that area! The national forest is amazing. We were just a bit further south and east than lake conasauga, I believe
Your right many buy theses axes just as another material posetion a trophy sad but true .
Theyre such great axes when set up right, I think this seems to be the only way to survive anymore for a smaller company like them. They can’t kick out enough volume to stay in business so they need to increase prices. Apparently there reversed course on the knife grinds? I hope so anyways.
Nice looking sharpener!
Thank you! Still keening the ropes of it I have hand sharpened everything up until now!
God bless your family my man! I’m itching so bad to get to the woods and swing an axe but I’ve been laid out for a couple weeks with a pinched nerve. This too shall pass! Say, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the American Felling vs the CT Classic Jersey. I’ve got the CT, but boy am I itching for one of those Gransfors. Be well my friend! 🙏🏼
Haha, just noticed you have a whole video on it! Heading on over now ;)
And your family too! Hope you heal up soon. I tweaked my back lifting some rounds this week. It’s not fun, I also hope this passes, and I’ll be smarter about my lifting next time. I LOVE the American felling axe. Handle is a bit thick but not so much I can’t use it and have fun. The grind and profile is good, it bites really deep. I also love the council tool jersey. That’s actually my all time favorite axe
@ Thanks for the reply bro! Yeah, I absolutely love the Jersey. It’s surprised me even in its splitting capability. I watched your video comparing the two axes and it honestly looked like the American Felling has a decent profile for splitting as well? At least on the video it looks to have a thicker profile compared to the Jersey which is pretty dang thin. I’m mostly splitting firewood with these things so even a little of thickness changes a lot. Good luck with your back, man. It’s been quite a ride this time around!
what length of granberg are you using. ive got a 36" but finding im needing to get a 48" or maybe a 54" mill as my daughter has a 38" sycomore tree that she is wanting counter tops made out of. I just got my norwood PM14 mill but ive got to put it together. it will be for smaller logs that i can get into small areas also. i do have my hm126 bandsaw mill but it doesnt get into small areas.. thanks
I have the 36 Inch but put 48 inch rails on it. With that extra length I did find an extra cross support handy. I added mine from a cheap Chinese mill I bought and broke.
Man, stop pushing me to get one!
Hahaha I have a video coming where I’m hoping to talk about some of the challenges. It’s great but definitely has some limitations!
Hello from Ocala Fl. Bought property here and lots of Oak on my property' So its axe time for me, can you tell me anything about: FORESTER Woodman 24in Wood Cutting Axe, Multipurpose Axe with Hickory Handle for Wood Splitting and Chopping - Hand Forged Swedish Steel, I got this axe at Amazon. thank you so much for any info
I’m not familiar with that axe or brand. For lots of oaks, a good full size axe is really helpful! I love my council tool Jersey. If a bigger budget the Helko Tasmanian and Gransfors American felling axe are great too
This is oddly calming and enjoyable to watch
Amazing! What brand are you using to sharpen
I’m using the 10 inch white sharpener from buck tool. It’s been so awesome amzn.to/4gVAqrh
@ thank you👍🪓
I've seen people take Stihl & or Husqvarna chainsaw parts depending on the type of Farmtek saw they had and make them much better saws
Totally agree! A few bucks on OEM can make a huge difference
How long is the handle? Is it the 26"
This is full size, the 36 inch. It does come on a miners axe handle that I think is 26 or thereabouts though
I appreciate your level of knowledge and passion for axes and steel. I am looking at getting into minimalist camping this spring here in Ontario and have been weary of buying any if the swedish hatchets (15 or 17 inch) nicely displayed in the high-end outdoor stores around cottage country. Based on what youves stated here, for entry level I'll happily settle with the flying fox by council tool and go ahead and buy one haha. Many thanks for the heads up.
Take a look at the camp carver by council
The Flying Fox is great! Thanks for letting me know. For my family or people I gift axes, the flying fox is a go to for me
Its on its way in the mail! Looking forward to some early spring bushcrafting ! Thanks for the info @urbanlumberjack
Looks like it's working!!!
