I found out years ago that when you use an HEI distributor, take out the GM module and replace it with a Oldsmobile module. The olds unit has longer saturation time and produces a hotter spark.

Of course, there's absolutely, 100% no point in doing this if the engine runs fine with the gm one, is there

Well considering Olds is GM 😅

      Hotter spark isn't always better

At 65 years old and farm raised I had always rebuilt my own vehicle engines from 350s to 454s and hearing how great the stroker 383 are I had to try one.
I can say now that 383 is far superior to the 350 for towing and right now acceleration response in torque.
When I have the 19 foot Dory boat bulling a steep grade Highway there is no lagging at all, if I want to pass other cars no problem the 383 has endless pulling torque.
The 383 worked out so well for my 1988 Chev truck I am right now with another 350 block and all internal parts in a machine shop to do a 385 for my 1/2 ton 1991 Chev truck.
When price the cost of doing a 350 or a 383 there is no difference in cost so why not go with more torque than the 350 can make.
My 383 Eagle crank cost $189 and balancing was $300 for crank - rods and pistons for all the rotating assembly to be all balancing and that is comparable to doing a 350 SB
The 385 now being done is a Scat crank that cost $260 and same cost to balance all the rotating parts.
350 SB blocks took me no more than 45 minuets to make the relief notches for the connecting rod bolts to clear the block.
It was so simple a downs syndrome retard could do it.
I also used the 6 inch connecting rods by Eagle.
If still liking the 350 SB have at it, I wanted to show my very happy experience with the 383 stroker for a work truck engine made for also towing boats and work trailers.

Hey what's the part number on that cam? Is it the 230/234 duration cam?
How does that cam perform? Do you like it?

      Yep, 230/234@.050 and .530/.540" lift.
Havent put the motor in anything yet, but I really liked the specs on this cam for a healthy street driven SBC. Part number is: TFS-31403001
