Fun fact: When I was a kid back in the late 80's / early 90's I went to a bluegrass convention with my dad. I think it was in South Carolina, but there was a dining area kind of like a school cafeteria and I sat down at the table directly in front of Bill Monroe and we shared a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
I got to meet him as a kid in Michigan. He played at a show and was hanging out with everyone after. I didn't realize at the time that he was a living legend.
March 15, 1996 - Bluegrass legend Bill Monroe makes what becomes his final appearance on the Grand Ole Opry. He ended his touring and playing career in April, following a stroke. Monroe died on September 9, 1996, in Springfield, Tennessee, only four days before his 85th birthday. Rest in peace Mr. Monroe.
Estelle Adamski are they scotch-Irish if there not its in your blood as they were the people who created all country music traveling down the Appalachian trail
My mother and I sat through a 4 hour rainstorm at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, Tn to see this legend. We were not disappointed and I got an autographed shirt.
My grandmother was from Rosine, Kentucky and dated Bill Monroe!!! I grew up going to Rosine for the Bluegrass Festival. I love all types of music, but bluegrass is close to my heart.
This is the true version of a great song. When I was about 16 years old, in 1975, the national danish radio had one hour each Wednesday with 'The country Express' I taped everything on the cassette, and this was, and still is, one of my favorites. 👍💓🇩🇰
Bill was always such a gentleman, saw him on both coasts and in between too, each time exchanged a few words and had a album signed, he never left until the line was gone.
OMG...I bought this CD at the Goodwill on a whim of intuition.....Got chills all over....I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best 50 cents I ever spent in this world! What a treasure! I love Bluegrass... All started with Patti Loveless Mountain Soul 1 and 2... So happy! Bill Monroe! I SALUTE!!!!
I grew up in northern CA & my parents were from Missouri & Oklahoma - so heard many of these classic country & bluegrass songs. I get chills & sometimes cry with joy when I play or hear them (also rocky top & foggy mountain breakdown). Now at 63, I've retired here to Kentucky & in sooo happy.❤❤❤
Sounds silly...but my favorite movie is Planes, Trains and Automobiles and the scene where Del and Neil are traveling down the highway in the burnt out car with no roof in the middle of the winter as they sang "Blue Moon of Kentucky" always gives me the warmest feeling. There's something special about that moment in the movie where the two guys finally bond after all their hardships and singing "Blue Moon* brings them together even more. Something about the open road, traveling across the countryside in the winter, belting out that song is special. I had to find out who's song that was and I'm glad I found that it's Bill Monroe's classic. Thanks for the song Mr. Monroe!....I gotta run, I've got some Shower Curtain Rings to sell.
Bill Monroe was the man! By the way, Lucixir's comment below is just plain silly. Bill Monroe defined bluegrass. He coined the word. Bill Monroe's voice will go down as one of, if not, the greatest in this genre.
Lyrics: Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining Shine on the one that's gone and proved untrue Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue It was on a moonlight night The star is shining bright And they whispered from on high Your love has said good-bye Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining Shine on the one that's gone and said good-bye Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining Shine on the one that's gone and proved untrue Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue It is on a moonlight night The stars shining bright They whispered from high Your love has said good-bye Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shining Shine on the one that's gone and said good-bye
The best Mandolin player ever. Both Bill Monroe and Ricky Skaggs. Bill and Elvis both killed it with this piece. Bill wrote a great song and Elvis made the song iconic.
I grew up with banjos, guitars and fiddles in my Grandparents living room, or on the porch! I have loved Bluegrass all my life! Mom played guitar, Uncle played Banjo! All the neighbors stopped by with instruments! Grew up fine!

It's a shame that some didn't know this song before KOTH. Bill Monroe is one of my favorites of all time and I'm 23 years old. I love old country.
This is bluegrass not country...
I'm aware of that. I was half asleep when I commented.
Hello Melissa how are you doing today?
