Car UK is the only car trader channel I watch religiously and Lee is the reason why I'm watching this channel; an old head on young shoulders if ever there was - minimal drama, maximum content - that's how I like it. if all cars are prep'd properly the warranty claims will be minimal and credibility will be maximal. it's self indemnity + kudos in the market place. a ready to go December cheapy = got drunk or caught out by the weather and wrecked the car/new driver Christmas present, need wheels asap lol. if you take the head off a car and do one valve plus a timing chain set without checking all the other valves you are asking for trouble down the line. valves don't generally fail in ones'. being a time-served (almost half a century ago) mechanic myself and having hired and trained a number over the years (admittedly in the tool & plant hire trade) what Lee says about flexibility is 110% spot on. the guys who are seemingly good at everything tend to be expensive and inflexible but the ones worth having know their weaknesses and if you can cover that they'll be good for your business and loyal. the best guy I ever had couldn't read a circuit diagram or do computer diagnostics but he was as happy as a pig in poo laying in the snow putting digger tracks on or doing a Saturday afternoon getting machines ready for Monday or tearing an engine/transmission/hydraulic pump apart and fixing it once on a shoe-string. luckily I could cover the circuit diagram issue and translate it into what he could see infront of him and then he'd fix it alone.
@@thatcheapguy525 I watch them all ,they are all good with different characters, like Wayne from the lovely car company and James blaming Ali of hogging the hot chocolate 😂😂
What I noticed from watching Lee on Car UK, is when he preps his cars, he will do some pre-emtpive work as he knows the common faults on the car he's selling, which is cheap to swap out before sale. Brakes, suspension parts, seals etc.
Guys I’m a car dealer too and used to work for Motorway and you’re completely right about the current rules governing the sales of used cars. The trade should 110% be able to pursue the public for putting cars into us they knew had issues - time for personal responsibility!!
So great to see all for of my top UA-cam channel guys in the same podcast , was so happy to see Lee on it long time ago said to Lee would love to see him on the channel today got my wish , Lee is real down to earth , he always comes across helpful and honest , he says it as it is nothing to hide , let’s hope he does come back on the channel at some point, Great news on Dave going to start up his own garage interesting times ahead. Very kind of James to help him out offering his TopDon diagnostics bit of kit will save him ca good few hundred quid and it’s a very good spec model.
Car dealers aren't generally bad people, customers aren't generally bad people, UA-cam commenters aren't generally bad people. Humans are wired to notice, remember and be wary of the 'bad' things they experience and that one negative will be a stronger memory than positive experiences because your brain is trying to keep you safe. I honestly believe this is where a lot of these inaccurate assumptions come from. It's probably also why it helps to have a risk taking personality as a car dealer. Another great podcast 👏
I'm commenting before I've even finished watching this one! Great to see 4 out of my top 10 dealer UA-camrs all in the same (virtual) room 😊Have watched you all for the past few years now, and to see the collaboration is fab 👍Have learned so much from watching your channels, and really appreciate all you do for us watchers! And yes, Lee IS a legend! FAB episode Joe 👍👍👍
Another brilliant podcast - best on UA-cam. You want a car wizard - James is right though you want someone who can diagnose / last person you want as an ex dealership person who is just a parts cannon operator. It’s a real skill to be able to fault find and that person will be able to do bushes and springs but not the other way around. Hire on a 3 month probationary trial so they can prove themselves and if they do a great job give them a title - eg Servive Manager and a pay rise.
Being an Ex retailer I'm very familiar with customer expectations , for the majority of cases the bad PR for not taking on the chin outweighed the extra outlay so however hard it was we took it. Some isolated cases we stood our ground but we had a big legal team as well.
I find it interesting that four people in the used car retailing sector spend a lot of their time on these podcasts complaining about the industry they all chose to be in! As far as I am aware there is no one with a gun to their head forcing them to sell used cars! Lee made an interesting comment about no longer wanting to run an M.O.T station, because it is now too difficult because of the cost of set up and the legislation. He was saying "there are easier businesses to make money in" I feel the same way about used car retailing now! There are many other businesses that require less work and stress and make more money!
90% of warranty issues can be avoided with experience of the usual faults (as Lee says) run em around for a few days, most things become evident.Cant see you getting anywhere in going back to customers on a p ex, your trade and take it on the chin, you don't want more in it, after overallowance, than it'll make at auction, or your just buying business. 30 days warranty on cheapies and 3 mths on dearer stuff is the way to go, no good giving someone 6 mths or a year and moaning when they come back in that time, you've just opened yourself up to it.
He reminds me of my old boss, mechanic working on his knees in the snow😂, Id say I like both qualities of UA-cam videos, glossy or raw as long as the content looks authentic. I genuinely want to see how your weeks been. Clickbait titles will probably give you more non subscriber views but irritate the subscribers. Great video as always. Joe definitely is good at finding likeable car dealers to give up their time. Any more videos with the Wink Girls?
Absolutely loved this one and i said in the comments a few times we need lee on so good to finally see him on here,we just need kev from vision prestige and that will be me happy, great chat guy's but has daves electricity been cut off or what😂
About 5 years ago over the Christmas period we decided to rent a large house and throw a Christmas/New Year party for all our Scottish relatives. It started off well but then just before New Year, it started to snow. And it continued to snow. The rental mansion (it had 12 bedrooms) was down a steep track so all of our normal cars couldn’t handle it. So, on the day before New Year we were out on a stocking up run to a Super Store in Glasgow and it was still snowing. My wife went into the Tesco and I walked across the road to a Land Rover Dealer, saw a Discovery 4 on the fire court, walked into the deserted dealership (it was 2 hrs from closing time) and said to the first person I saw… that Disco4 outside is it still for sale. The suited salesperson said “yes”. So I said I want it, here the money ready to transfer into your account so where do I sign? They didn’t really want to do the deal but I persisted and drove away with the Disco 4 on trade plates. Just goes to show, if one needs a car, then one really needs it. No discussion on money or warranty just I need it now!
James comments on trade in with undeclared faults . I operate a mechanical repair and MOT Garage and the first thing customers say when we tell them they are in for a big bill is “ oh I will just trade it in “ And my response is “ I wouldn’t want to buy a used car from you “ !!! They think nothing of shafting you guys but woe betide if you did that to them
@ would of been a crazy idea in my opinion to tell the customer that this kind of work had been done in prep? 11 months down the line they would probably not of even thought of bringing it back for repair and if they did you were well within your rights to not fix it !
I sold a Clio PX-Sold as Seen for £1k, discussed it was trade price sale and retail was £1600. "do you understand it's sold as seen... Yes! (knew it was ok as the wife had been using it for 3 months) 2 months in, I got a txt message at 7pm on a Friday night. "This car has a broken coil spring, how do you want to pay for it?... O and we need it back on the road for Monday Morning as she needs it for work!"
One issue with MOT ing your own stock is that should the customer appeal the test after purchase DVSA really frown upon any car that the A E has a financial interest in
I buy 90% of my cars from private sales. Same market as Lee. It’s laughable that people think it’s better to buy off a private seller. There’s so much junk advertised by private sellers, most private sellers genuinely think there cars are great, they are not. Last week I bought a Fiat 500. The seller said their car was mint, fantastic, well looked after.. they hadn’t had it serviced since 2017, there’s a hole in the rear spring mounting, a dent in the front wing. Yet I think they genuinely believed it to be mint. I guarantee most people would not have spotted that rear axle unless you’re looking at cars every day of the week.
I think you are dead right about customers with unreasonable expectations but don’t expect any help from the government. These net zero obsessed mentally deficient politicians don’t want old cars on the road - even though keeping an old car running is more environmentally friendly than any new EV - they want old cars gone. No ignore that……they want ALL cars gone (except their official Range Rovers of course)
