Sphero Ollie - hands on with the new high speed fun tricks robot [Review]

- Full review at www.redferret.net/?p=46256 . The new Sphero Ollie is the successor to the original popular Sphero robot ball, and while it features the same kind of smartphone controlled fun, it comes with a few new tricks of its own.
For one thing is features changeable tires, which can be swapped out according to the terrain. As with its predecessor, it's controlled by a smartphone app, which also offers a trick pad, as well as straight motion control.
The LED lights are very cool, and with a little practice we can see this becoming a really fun robot. Although with a top speed of 14 mph and a max range of just 30 meters, you'll need to be careful to keep the thing within control range for maximum enjoyment.

Did you align that top tire? It appears wobbly when spinning so the rubber tire is probably not seated properly.
You're right, I noticed later that I'd rushed the job. Luckily it seemed to work OK. I think. :)

No, the ollie cannot go in water. While the Sphero 2.0 can actually swim "You have to put it on full power but it will swim through pools, etc"
Ollie cannot go in water, but sphero can, I have both. Ollie is great if you just want to drive it around, and is better at it. But sphero has tons of fun games to play on iPhone if you like that sort of thing. Hope this helps!

Sphero is independent from Ollie and vica versa. They are seperate toys and function great seperately :) Remember Sphero is waterproof, Ollie will break in water!

Have this! Use it in the city on sidewalks or in public places like a bus station. Its very popular when people come up and ask nicely about it. Watch out for kids they will pick it up and laugh. Just ask them politely to put it back down and the usually don't run off with it :)

Hi there. Cool video. I was given a 120$ apple gift card and honestly didnt really need it. Only thing apple I have is my iphone 5c and I would NEVER spend money on digital media both music nor videos. But then i came across this little guy and thought how fun it looked. After seeing your video I do believe I remember seeing one of your other videos on another robot product that wouldnt climb stairs like it was suppose to. Anywho I also saw this other toy called the Parrot Mini Drone. It also looks fun and it flies BUT only thing I didnt like about it is that it only holds a charge for 8 minutes. So for every 90 minutes of charging you get a whopping 8 minutes of fun which I think would annoy the hell out of me. I was thinking maybe I should start with this Ollie and then maybe move up to a more pricier drone if I decide to get a drone. I was never into model remote control airplanes or helicopters or anything like that but these drones do look a bit more fun and much easier to control. So if you dont mind let me know what you think about my options here. Sphero Ollie or Parrot Mini Drone Rolling Spider. Now if there is a way to get a better battery for a good half hour or longer of fun from that mini drone then I would for sure go with that. Although its mini it is the size of a hand or around that size so its not like super mini. I see you did a video on that as well which I am about to check out. I really would LOVE to get the drone but the whole 8 minutes thing is really really an annoying issue and then taking 90 minutes to recharge. Both are 99$ with free shipping so within my price range on this apple gift card.

Ha, no it doesn't seem to bend. But it's probably just a teeny bit water resistant (the user guide says avoid water if I remember correctly).
Red Ferret Some articles I have read suggest its waterproof up to a few meters so going through a few puddles of water or in rain will not be a problem. If this isn't the case, it's not suited for outdoor activity in the UK where the weather isnt your best friend.
On the other hand, Sphero 2.0 is completely waterproof but its slower than Ollie and the ball shape is monotonous for 2014.

Can you change its color?
Not the color of the unit itself I believe, but you can change the treads which are available in different colors. And maybe the color of the hubcaps (the bits on the ends of the wheels).

You need to follow the instructions *very carefully* for it to work. Turn on Bluetooth, plug in USB cable to wake it up, then touch the phone or tablet to the Ollie. Keep trying different touch positions too, because sometimes it takes a bit for the pairing to happen.

Well the Ollie is fast and for outdoor play, and the sphere is for indoor/outdoor play but sphero is only about 6 mph well Ollie is 15 mph.

If you have a pretty open room then I think that you can use this indoors. You can also turn the speed down if it's too fast.

Hmm...I realize that answer was probably a bit flip. So let me apologize and try again. Sorry I didn't go into more detail. The review is actually a two-parter, as all of ours are, and so you'll find more information on the website which adds to what is said in the video. It's hard to test everything completely in such a short timeframe for publication, which is why I said on the written review over on the site - "Our early tests for the video were far too timid, so we’ll be re-visiting the product again later to really put it through some tough love and see how it copes..."
I also like to answer direct questions here! :)
To answer your specific points - it takes around an hour to charge. I mention also on the blog that the blurb says a charge lasts 60 minutes, we didn't test out that limit. Durability and performance outdoors, please see my quote above. Sorry to have disappointed you. Thanks for the nice words about the production values.

Jeremy Newcombe it has terrible controls you always have to recalibrate it when you pick it up the wheels spin for no reason also it feels really really cheap it dosnt go as fast as it said at all and have of the time it wont connect to my phone
