  • Up next an interview with a principal band member and cowriter of one of the most recognizable and popular songs of the 80s. except for the fact that it was actually written, recorded, released and peaked on the charts in the 70s! Video Killed The Radio Star by the Buggles was actually a 70s song But because it was part of one of the most revolutionary moments in music history when it was the first song played on MTV it’s known as one of quintessential songs of the 80s. and yet it was barely even a hit. registering at #40… The story of a barely one hit wonder that changed everything is up from the band Geoff Downes who was in the band with producer Trevor Horn.

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Bottled Lightning, where we celebrate songs that were king for a day. Tagged by most as one-hit wonders, we call ‘em lightning in a bottle for their sheer impact on our culture that sometimes lasts longer than artists with multiple hits… and today is definitely one of those. It only hit #40 in 1979 which barely registers as a hit. And today’s song is normally celebrated as one of the most 80s songs ever. But it was actually a 70s song. It was written, recorded released, and peaked in the 70s but due to its campy music video that happened to be the first one played by MTV in 1981, it’s become the darling of the 80s and the instigator of the revolution known as music television.
I’m talking about Video Killed the Radio Star. Writing after Trevor Horn read a sci-fi story about an opera singer who lived in a world without sound. She was rendered obsolete. It was actually then finished by Horn and today’s guest Geoff Downes. Geoff Downes who has been a major part of Yes, Asia, and one-half of The Buggles. Geoff has all of the details so let’s get into it. as we go into this interview, I want to thank our sponsor Zenni Eyewear which is my the brand I’m wearing and is my favorite glasses I’ve ever worn.
