I've been told that the water from salt-based water softeners should not be used on outside plants; when you have a whole house system and the outside faucets are part of that system. What is you take on this?
Yes. The briny backwash can harm plants-it's environmentally damaging. It would be better to dispose of it on a dry well or French drain. You can read our detailed article on disposing of water softener backwash for more options: www.aquaprofessor.com/where-to-discharge-water-softener-backwash/
@@aquaprofessor thx for the quick reply. Our water is hard, so our priority is to reduce the hardness & hopefully clean our pipes, calcium buildup on shower heads, water spots, e.t.c. Having pure drinking water is #2. And third, if we can get it without harming the environment, is to soften the water. By addressing #1, will we not have somewhat softer water? With those things above in mind, what system would you recommend? Is an under the kitchen sink reverse osmosis system in order here or would a reverse osmosis for the whole house more appropriate?
When a house with a water softener loop is plumbed, the water line goes from the meter to the loop in the garage and feeds the whole house from there, except the hose bibs. The line tees off to feed hosebibs before the loop, so they won't be affected if you install a softener. If the house didn't have a softener loop, then a hose bib can be installed in front of the softener while they're installing the loop.
@@larrycox6614 If you want a solution to pipe scaling without damaging environment, opt for water conditioners aka salt free softeners. We recommend Aquasana.
Hello Aqua professor. I need help with deciding which softener to use. My water in CA is hard and around 17 by Rainbow water district. Can you please respond and help me. Thanks
Hardness over 15 GPG is extremely hard, which means spotty glasses and iron stains. It's best to go for SpringWell Salt-Based softener, our #1 pick on this list.

1 of those are not water softeners…
I just realized I’m a plumbing troll.
Yes, one of them (Aquasana) is a water conditioner. We added it to this list because people with medium hardness have found it helpful.
@@aquaprofessor Quick on the draw.
@@Beniamin6665 My pleasure 😀
Only Saltwater are real Water Softners
Salt free softeners work for low to medium hardness!
