Kitesurfer gets caught in a big storm!

- Kitesurfing session in the UK on the east coast. The conditions looked perfect (all be it a little cold, below 5c) for a good day at the beach. The first time of the 2012 season that winter wear was needed. Wind was blowing on average around 25mph in the sun and flat water conditions. After a short fun time a hail storm was to pass through where wind speeds picked up to around 50mph in an instant. As you can see in the video I was lofted from the water and struggled to keep control of my kite as the kite was not designed to be used in such strong wind, Luckily I managed to engage my safety system and was (eventually) helped by another kiter stood on the beach . Nobody else out was injured as everyone engaged the kites safety systems too and all was fine.
About 10mins after we all made it back to the beach another storm cloud came though and the wind speeds were reported to be even higher than before as kiters had to lay on their kites to stop them from from blowing away.
Footage was from a GoPro Hero2 Camera.
Track: Clare Maguire - Ain't Nobody (Breakage Remix)
You really don't want to have someone with no clue to catch you kite in such conditions...
When people ask me how safe kiteboarding is I will show them this video. Good job man.
Well, its 7 years ago now, what do you think now with al the improvements ?
@@steven-mj1yi Yeah Im glad you ask. Things have changed a litte but the principle is the same. Know what you are doing when you go big. I think we would now all react quicker, check over our shoulder more and for sure have a small kite waiting on the beach to go right back out after that landing! Am I right? XD
@@Sijtze22 yeah, but this guy got some skills, but the other kiter wasnt that experienced i think, my smallest kite is a 7 and in 35 knots i only go on the water when there are some other kiters around, you always have your quikrelease but i will risk my life twice before throwing away 1500 euro of kitegear 😂😜
Had this problem once back in 2001 when surfing a 2 line kite with no safety. My worst kitemare.
Would love to hear that story.
Cool thanks for advice!
Yes the guy on the beach was a newbie and didn't seem to get what was going on, Glad he finally helped and I had a word with him after, it was a good lesson for a first timer anyway about how things can quickly get dangerous!
Haha, hands up if you didnt see that coming for the whole first half of the movie??
Read the sky guys, read the sky!
Settle down there Jim Cantore. I have seen many good sessions with storm clouds, easy to talk shit after the fact. This guy obviously knows what he is doing.
+Stewart Gartland I'm not sure if you are from the UK but in england and particularly in the channel such cloud formations and storm fronts are very common. Quite often they go through you which takes usually 15-30min which resluts in some dodgy wind and rain during this time. Most people just kite through it closish to the shore in case the wind turns completly offshore (which it seldom does though).
You're obviously a competent kiter and glad this didn't end up worse than it did!! You need to keep your eyes on the conditions while you're kiteing so these squalls don't creep up on you and take you by surprise. There was a big sky behind you there that had all the signs of what was to come.
Great video though! Looks like you had a blast!
The Sky , the sky, look at the sky, great vid though, all part of the kitesurfing experience.
mental!! i give you mad props for holding that down as long as you did!
Interesting where you clip the leash onto the front lines..must save a lot of hassle once you pull the safety? or does this ensure that the kite will flag if a front line fails? forgive my ignorance...been riding only a year but keen to learn any ideas from kiters such as you:) the squall looked pretty bad, I get squalls where I live..can usually spot them miles upwind, certainly pays to land and secure the kite!
Savage stuff. Awsome jumps over the shoreline before the sqaull hit. That hail looked mad. Think i'll wait until spring! :)
Great video. Really shows how quickly the conditions can change!
captain america rescue! jaja I love this vid!
thank u man :D winter 2014 i see this video the first time. 2015 i startet kiteboarding till now..
Good handling, well done. Love your bar set up. Very simple if you know what you're doing. 👍👍
Very beautiful movie and what a song ! High jumps man, very high jumps ! Great for our sport !
Sheeeeeettt!!!!!! Good skills Me Fat! That was looking lovely! Never seen a squall like that before.
Was it forecast for storms? It's pretty unlucky these days to have a freak storm/front come through without prior weather forecast. If there is storms forecast an your in it for the wind..well your running the gauntlet. Very lucky dude.
A fuel in 50mph!!! You sounded glad to have made it back alive!
Over the summer, me and a few other people ran into a storm like this that came out of nowhere. I was the only one in the air and decided to land my kite since some dark clouds were coming in fast. Luckily I did because a few minutes later it blew in around 50mph. With my 14m, I would have been miles down the beach.
Same sort of thing happened to me 3 weeks ago... Ended up in hospital with a broken leg and dislocated ankle and shoulder joints! Not going to make the same mistake again!!
awesome video dude, crazy squall you ran into! too bad it was so long before anyone came to help land the kite, Great reflex to put your safety on the flag line when you saw you were over-powered, the only thing i would've done differently is to keep the kite much lower, almost touching the water, that way you don't get pulled upwards, and it is easier to manage the power. otherwise, great reaction, glad everyone is safe!
Quick help by those other blokes on the beach lol
awesome tune
nice loops
awesome kite
all in all an awesome video well done
awesome!! thanks for sharing! this is something that everybody that is learning the sport should be aware of... whenever you guys are in mexico mi casa es su casa :) nomadas kiteboarding, cancun mexico..
Nice, in the beginning your nailing it big time!
But i have a question. In the vid i can see easily a big storm is about to hit. why didn't you go off the water?>. Did it hit faster than you thought?
nice loops!
that storm came out of nowhere.
u managed to land the jump well i would have just fallen down with my kite over my head!:)
What size did u use during the vid? I had a similar situation during 2010. Kind of strange feeling beeing lifted without intention :P sometime an effektiv depower isnt that bad :) kiteon
When I saw the title I was like yeah bullshit but um... yeah that's a storm alright!! Nice save!
Thank god Captain America was kitesurfing in the vincinity =D
hey man big tune, big edit, big skills. glad your safe
This would of been a wet dream to Ruben Lenten lol
would of?
If he'd of got caught in the storm... Catch my drift?
James McIntyre
Would have*
I am astonished the others didn't do anything, if that came through and I was on the beach I would be looking out for anyone out there who might need help, not just waiting until you release and casually walking over and making a poor attempt at securing the kite. You hung on well but that looks like it went full on mental!
Dude where abouts you kiting here? you know of any good spots on the east cost for a south easterly? :)
where do you have the go pro?
on your chest or head?
Lesson number 1 always look over your shoulder and if you are that kind of cloud get off the water rapid!
what kinda board are you riding and kite?
Well spotted!!!!! Everyone out was fine like I said. They all hit the safety systems and all was ok, got away with it, could have been worse!!
Ouch, Hope you have a speedy recovery!
That escalated quickly! All worked out okay in the end though.
Fair enough. Glad they didn't launch the 9.
I was out on new years eve on my 9m Fuel and a squall came through - over 40 knots, I got mauled.
I need to get a 7m Fuel soon, looks like it loops far nicer than the 9.
Hunny does look good, not been there in about 5 years.
Great video. I once got caught on my kite buggy with my Ozone Samurai 6m foil kite. The wind suddely change from about 8knots to 15.
Gawd damn that went 0-100 real quick.
what kinds of kites were out there. I saw you just pulled your chicken loop off the spreader bar, I'm wondering if people on cabs or best were able to flag out safely in 50mph on their mini 5th lines.
Well it's just that bar has no safety on it. Usually bars would have elastic on the front line that runs down the de-power rope and then you would connect to that at your chicken loop. This bar on the other hand can only be ridden suicide (leashed to the chicken loop) with that front line flag just in case things like that happen
Cool video , where is the beach ?
arrghhh, cleethorpes beach on the 27th oct, i arrived just after this, i remember speaking to a few lads who had been doing it for years and its the first time they'd known it blow through like that... scary stuff
Nice, what's the track ?
how much was the wind ?
That's a nice board dude! From what brand is it?
I'm glad you're safe but what about the guy at 2:56 ?
Good thing your trim was above the bar! Below the bar woulda sucked!
good lesson for all kiters that things can go wrong and get dangerous from 1 minute to the next
yep that looks like a great spot nice loops and a bad ass squall/weather front
nice spot to ride: ) !!!
cheers from the fellow kitesurfer :)
Hi MrMattfat1, I have to say that I've watched this thrilling video many times over the years. I wish I knew where abouts it is though lol. I don't suppose it's near maidstone or is it as far down as Eastbourne? I want to put that place on the map! I hope you don't mind. Thanks dude
Should really have seen that coming. The black clouds on the horizon were showing when you launched.
which size has your kite?
Nice vid! awesome kiteloops
best kite video ever!!
we have so many of those times in the wet season (winter for you guys) when one minute we are nicely powered on our 9m's then next were getting lofted 20m in the air..
So, what did you do next? pumped up a smaller size, right?
Kiddin :)
captain america to the rescue (captain america helmet) - he should have kept an eye on incoming fellow kiteboarder when there is no other kiteboarder around. camaraderie my friend - today i watch your back, tomorrow you watch mine.
Nice performance dude!
its funny because my local spot we have the opposite problem to you guys the waters too warm and the wind is really light..
HI, where is this spot? awesome'
why did he attach his leash to the tension lines?
So when he releases the chicken loop that left center line will be the only 1 with tension thus flagging the kite out. That left center line goes through a ring and has another ring attached to the end which the leash connects to, The older griffin/ monkey kites had the same system. Very simple system which often just uses basic sailing hardware rather than proprietary parts. Good to know the design if u kite in remote places and have a failure of a part u cant replace.
I thought when he released the chickenloop and consequentally dropped the bar the only thing which has tension on are the 2 centre lines anyways (if the leash is still attached to the normal place) is there any benefit of just having tension on one of the centre lines rather than both?
KingProne
no, if both center lines are still tensioned the bar cannot slide past them even if the chicken loop is disengaged. In the system on this kite, like many, the right center line slides up the left center line when the loop release is pulled. This allows the entire bar and right center line to go all the way out to the kite and go completely slack. Its hard to really explain in text but the left center line has a break in it which it mended with 2 small rings. A short line goes from chicken loop, through the bar to just above the depower strap and has a small ring on it. Then the line from the kite goes down, through that small ring and another small ring is tied on so it cannot be pulled back through the first ring. They effectively lock against each other from tension created by the kite but when the leash is pulled everything else slides up that line.
kawi21 ah i see now. cabrinha used to have something similar on their kites till 2012 too until they moved to the mini 5th line which you engage via qr release.
The footage before the storm hit was my session. All in order one after the other.... so like 5mins of riding... Went from this awesome session in the sun to defcon1 in 5 mins, I was having far too much fun to notice! Got lucky this time!!!
Nice, I liked it Big time, was that hail? cold brrrr
good you had control! also some luck :) happened to me before, scary!
What boots were used here?
Dont want to experience that storm :p
What boots??!! don't you mean what helmet?
Hi, the boots are Liquid Force Watsons. Come off fairly quickly as you can see, a big plus point for kiting! Thanks for watching!!
what is the song name?..
Thanks for watching and I'll remember you to me when I visit!!! :D
Next time check the weather conditions ;) And make sure while jumping that the water is deep enough for the landing!
jeeeez that looks crazy,
scary!,glad your ok.
you are riding god but the storm damn

Clare Maguire - Ain't Nobody (Breakage Remix)
Thanks for watching!!
thanks nice megaloops check out my channel man
Check the amount of hail!
Lucky you had the helmet on....for all that hail....
Still love this video for what our was like. Even if yours was a bit chuff. ;)
wow just wow
lol....super kite day:-)
Wow awesome
The guys were total noobs, we had spoken before I went out and they had a 9m between them which was fine at the time. When I did get blown onto the beach he had a 12m out and was ready to launch when the storm came though so its actually lucky I got blown onto the shore when and where I did as 1min later there would have been a newbie strapped to a 12m kite in 50mph+ which could have easily ended up a death! It was a good lesson to them though to take more care and maybe learn a bit more first!
People like this lady really infuriate me.
Respect nature. Do not go out with less experiences...
