Kitesurfer gets caught in a big storm!

  • Kitesurfing session in the UK on the east coast. The conditions looked perfect (all be it a little cold, below 5c) for a good day at the beach. The first time of the 2012 season that winter wear was needed. Wind was blowing on average around 25mph in the sun and flat water conditions. After a short fun time a hail storm was to pass through where wind speeds picked up to around 50mph in an instant. As you can see in the video I was lofted from the water and struggled to keep control of my kite as the kite was not designed to be used in such strong wind, Luckily I managed to engage my safety system and was (eventually) helped by another kiter stood on the beach . Nobody else out was injured as everyone engaged the kites safety systems too and all was fine.
    About 10mins after we all made it back to the beach another storm cloud came though and the wind speeds were reported to be even higher than before as kiters had to lay on their kites to stop them from from blowing away.
    Footage was from a GoPro Hero2 Camera.

    You really don't want to have someone with no clue to catch you kite in such conditions...

      @@steven-mj1yi Yeah Im glad you ask. Things have changed a litte but the principle is the same. Know what you are doing when you go big. I think we would now all react quicker, check over our shoulder more and for sure have a small kite waiting on the beach to go right back out after that landing! Am I right? XD

      @@Sijtze22 yeah, but this guy got some skills, but the other kiter wasnt that experienced i think, my smallest kite is a 7 and in 35 knots i only go on the water when there are some other kiters around, you always have your quikrelease but i will risk my life twice before throwing away 1500 euro of kitegear 😂😜

    Yes the guy on the beach was a newbie and didn't seem to get what was going on, Glad he finally helped and I had a word with him after, it was a good lesson for a first timer anyway about how things can quickly get dangerous!

      +Stewart Gartland I'm not sure if you are from the UK but in england and particularly in the channel such cloud formations and storm fronts are very common. Quite often they go through you which takes usually 15-30min which resluts in some dodgy wind and rain during this time. Most people just kite through it closish to the shore in case the wind turns completly offshore (which it seldom does though).

    You're obviously a competent kiter and glad this didn't end up worse than it did!! You need to keep your eyes on the conditions while you're kiteing so these squalls don't creep up on you and take you by surprise. There was a big sky behind you there that had all the signs of what was to come.
    Great video though! Looks like you had a blast!

    Interesting where you clip the leash onto the front lines..must save a lot of hassle once you pull the safety? or does this ensure that the kite will flag if a front line fails? forgive my ignorance...been riding only a year but keen to learn any ideas from kiters such as you:) the squall looked pretty bad, I get squalls where I live..can usually spot them miles upwind, certainly pays to land and secure the kite!

    Was it forecast for storms? It's pretty unlucky these days to have a freak storm/front come through without prior weather forecast. If there is storms forecast an your in it for the wind..well your running the gauntlet. Very lucky dude.

    Over the summer, me and a few other people ran into a storm like this that came out of nowhere. I was the only one in the air and decided to land my kite since some dark clouds were coming in fast. Luckily I did because a few minutes later it blew in around 50mph. With my 14m, I would have been miles down the beach.

    awesome video dude, crazy squall you ran into! too bad it was so long before anyone came to help land the kite, Great reflex to put your safety on the flag line when you saw you were over-powered, the only thing i would've done differently is to keep the kite much lower, almost touching the water, that way you don't get pulled upwards, and it is easier to manage the power. otherwise, great reaction, glad everyone is safe!

    what kinds of kites were out there. I saw you just pulled your chicken loop off the spreader bar, I'm wondering if people on cabs or best were able to flag out safely in 50mph on their mini 5th lines.

  • @MrMattfat1
    @MrMattfat1  11 років тому

    Well it's just that bar has no safety on it. Usually bars would have elastic on the front line that runs down the de-power rope and then you would connect to that at your chicken loop. This bar on the other hand can only be ridden suicide (leashed to the chicken loop) with that front line flag just in case things like that happen

    Я в такой ситуации кайт в край окна загоняю(в 3х метрах от воды). Доску ставлю на ветер(типо зарезаюсь) и тупо лежу в воде упираясь в доску.
    Если кайт поднять на 12. То начинает выбрасывать из воды(сложнее оставаться на месте), отстрел не всегда помогает, меня отстреленный кайт в такой ситуации продолжал тащить по пляжу.

    why did he attach his leash to the tension lines?

    • @TheOffCycle
      @TheOffCycle 10 років тому

      So when he releases the chicken loop that left center line will be the only 1 with tension thus flagging the kite out. That left center line goes through a ring and has another ring attached to the end which the leash connects to, The older griffin/ monkey kites had the same system. Very simple system which often just uses basic sailing hardware rather than proprietary parts. Good to know the design if u kite in remote places and have a failure of a part u cant replace.

    • @kingprone7846
      @kingprone7846 10 років тому

      I thought when he released the chickenloop and consequentally dropped the bar the only thing which has tension on are the 2 centre lines anyways (if the leash is still attached to the normal place) is there any benefit of just having tension on one of the centre lines rather than both?

    • @TheOffCycle
      @TheOffCycle 10 років тому +1

      KingProne
      no, if both center lines are still tensioned the bar cannot slide past them even if the chicken loop is disengaged. In the system on this kite, like many, the right center line slides up the left center line when the loop release is pulled. This allows the entire bar and right center line to go all the way out to the kite and go completely slack. Its hard to really explain in text but the left center line has a break in it which it mended with 2 small rings. A short line goes from chicken loop, through the bar to just above the depower strap and has a small ring on it. Then the line from the kite goes down, through that small ring and another small ring is tied on so it cannot be pulled back through the first ring. They effectively lock against each other from tension created by the kite but when the leash is pulled everything else slides up that line.

    • @kingprone7846
      @kingprone7846 9 років тому

      kawi21 ah i see now. cabrinha used to have something similar on their kites till 2012 too until they moved to the mini 5th line which you engage via qr release.

When I did get blown onto the beach he had a 12m out and was ready to launch when the storm came though so its actually lucky I got blown onto the shore when and where I did as 1min later there would have been a newbie strapped to a 12m kite in 50mph+ which could have easily ended up a death! It was a good lesson to them though to take more care and maybe learn a bit more first!
