We often joke Canada is what the USA would be if they would start to care for their people.
So basicly we look very positivly at Canada and I also only heard good things from parts of the family after they moved to Canada.

As you are begging to get one negative thing on Canada: the Residential School system, Highway of Tears and in general the treatment of First Nations. A few month ago I watched the Canadian series Little Bird on TV and really liked it.
As a German I have been to Canada one time for a month a few years ago and I really liked it. I was primarily in Montreal to improve my French but also went to Toronto, Ville de Québec, Ottawa and Niagara Falls. In general I would say that Germans view Canada as an opposite pole of the USA, in a very positive sense: less school shootings, less crime, less race problems, a bit like heaven on earth. Of course this German view on Canada is somehow naive 😄

In terms of the treatment of the indigenous people, there is a documentary from the German/French broadcaster "Arte" (public service broadcasting; also available here on UA-cam) about the treatment of these people.
    I found it really creepy....
"Misshandelt und umerzogen: Kanadas First Nations"
(Abused and re-educated: Canada's First Nations)
Maybe also available in French and currently not available on the Arte UA-cam channel. But it is uploaded again and again.
I think that reappraisal is important in every country.
    Best regards from Germany! :)

True true Canadians have a very good reputation in Germany. No wonder many US Americans claim they are Canadians instead of saying they are from the USA when on a trip in Germany.

I was a soldier with the German Armed Forces at CFB Shilo Shilo/Manitoba in 1996. It was somehow fascinating. The landscape, the animals. On night watch on the firing range, when the tanks stayed there, you could hear prairie dogs howling. It was a wonderful experience for me.

    When I think of Canada,
the first thing that comes to mind is the Olympic Games in Montreal. That was in 1976 and it was a very hot summer in Germany with weeks of sunshine. I was going through puberty. The music in 1976 was great.
Annegret Richter won the women's 100m (semi-final world record of 11.01 sec). Inge Helten, who ran a world record shortly before the Olympics, came third after Renate Stecher (GDR).
Hasely Crawford (Trinidad & Tobago) won the men's 100m. He had retired injured in the final in 1972. His rival in 1972 was Valery Borsov (Borzov) from the Soviet Union, who inspired me to become a 100m sprinter (10.8 sec without doping). Borsov finished third in Montreal in 1976 behind Don Quarrie from Jamaica (yes, he started the boom of Jamaican sprinters). Don Quarrie won the 200m.
Alwin Schockemöhle, the older brother of Paul, the exposed animal abuser, won the gold medal in show jumping in a thunderstorm. Peter Michael Kolbe collapsed on the course in the single sculls. His (eternal) rival Karpinnen won. Kolbe had received a "build-up" injection, later named after him, before the race, which did him no good.
I could now recount 90% of the 14 days of the Olympics.
    When I think of Canada,
I also think of the Winter Games in Calgary and Vancouver. K.D. Lang sang "Hallelujah" in 2010 and I cried for gallons.
    When I think of Canada,
I think of the fact that in 1944 on D-Day in the Normadie, not only the USA but also Canada, together with the British (and others), landed on the Normandie beaches with a large liberation contingent. Thank you. From a post-born German. I have been happy for decades that (my) Germany was defeated. With the help of Canada. Thank you again for that.
[How can you recognise the new Nazis from the AfD in Germany? By the fact that they can't celebrate the defeat of the Nazi Germans. They don't care that this people has been the worst war gangsters in history. For all decent Germans it was a liberation].
I have experienced - from a distance - Papa Trudeau and son Trudeau.
There were and are much worse heads of government than these two.
    When I think of Canada,
I think of the dysfunctional blonde newsreader woman from german TV who has faded away into the world of pomposity. She emigrated to Canada a few years ago.
    Interesting:
When getting off the local bus, I have been saying "thank you" plus "goodbye" for many years. I didn't know that this is customary in Canada.
    And many more ...

Canadians are like US-Americans. But nice, normal, emphatic, friendly, open-minded and genuinely loveable.
I have extended family in Canada and have been there several times. If you have never visited Canada, you're missing out. Go there, meet the people, see the country (mind you, the 2nd largest country in the world, so maybe don't plan to visit all of the northern territories) and just have a good time. No better place in North America than Canada for enjoying life.

According to my research, many of my ancestors emigrated from northern Germany to Canada (somewhere in the north) around 1750 and settled there as boat builders and farmers.
Don't know why but this is always first on my mind when I think of Canada.
And when I hear about the area where you live, I get a little mad at my great great great grandpa for not going there too😢

Of course, no society, in any country, is perfect. The crucial difference to the USA is that you don't get on the nerves of your close friends and allies! And because you have been shaped by the British for a long time, your mindset is much closer to Europe than the US. The fact that you also have a massive French element only reinforces this closeness! I personally have never been to North America, but my little brother was in Manitoba for maneuvers with the German army in the early 90s. He thought Canada was great, even if the continental climate with its sharp temperature differences can change so abruptly that it's unusual for a German or a Central European in general...

my aunt went to Canada and my cousin was born there, so he is a Candian by law. My daughter went there for 2 years to work. The most negative about Canadians i ever heared is that they apologize too often - even if it wasn´t their fault, but they apologize anyway.... Canada is a land I personally would like to live in but the yearly vacation isn´t that great over there. I love my 6 weeks a year :) The health politics are nearly the same as here in Europe. Canada seems to be the european´s land in America which makes it very likeble....

Having lived a year in Canada as an exchange student (2009) the only things that rubbed me the wrong way was ultra nationalistic aspects from my German very anti patriotic upbringing's perspective (standing at attention to the national anthem at the start of every school day, veterans day, military recruiting in the highschool), the general cultural disconnect with Anglophone politeness which can come across as fake to Germans, the first nation issues (at the time i was there the Quebec government had just culled all the inuit's dogs for some supposed disease found in all of them conveniently right after they voted as a block against Quebec's independence) and the amount of drugs, especially in schools (lived and attended school in one of Ottawa's suburbs).
Though that is it with the list of "complaints" I could come up with, other than that a very nice, friendly and welcoming country. (Oh and your pizza sucks, no idea what spices you put on there but it has a distinct terrible aftertaste. Though I was compensated for my suffering by poutine and Timmy's)

Canada? I was there. No forrest, no mountains and very, very flat. But funny little animals that come out of the ground and stand on their burrows and look like a captain watching the horizon. The people? I hardly met any Canadians. There were a few in the store, and they were completely normal. It was autumn, the weather was great. Oh, and if you see a corn or grain field there, it is as big as a federal state here.
He's right about the clouds. The sky seems somehow wider than here. It's hard to describe but it's a bit different.
I can't think of anything negative about Canada. I would have liked to see a Canadian ice hockey game. But not a big one, more like the regional league here. With around 500 spectators. No, but nothing negative. I'm sure you can find something on the internet but I didn't notice anything. Well, I wasn't there in the winter either. I've been told it's very tough.

Hey Maes (hope I got it right). Greetings from Germany. Please bear in mind that the original video was released 7 years ago. Remember who was president of your southern neighbour back then? Compared to him, Trudeau made a much better impression, especially to Europeans. Plus there's not many news from Canada that make the news here. If people here want to get an unfiltered impression they need to dig deeper, talk to locals or consult sources "off the beaten track" so to speak. I'm not too well-informed either. What I can say however is that you've got a great metal scene over there, haha.
