I've played on these maps for years and years but there's still things I never noticed. I somehow never noticed the giant ship on CP_Granary. You just don't pay attention to areas you can't go to I guess.
I've seen a video about a destructable 2Fort (and pretty sure they did it to other maps). They made all props solid and fixed a lot of things. Then the players could break windows and stuff and use those areas (like the rooms by the Intel room)
"Maps require impassable boundaries, but unless we restrict the environments to either interior spaces or steep canyons, these boundaries can't always block the player's view of the outlying, unreachable area. In our more realistic titles, like HL2, these boundaries often require fictional and visual explanations. In the heavily stylized Team Fortress world, however, conspicuous artificiality is a core design principle and so we can simplify or altogether ignore these explanations without compromising the player experience. Playtesting showed, for instance, that these low fences leading to an empty expanse successfully conveyed the message that the area beyond the fence is uninteresting and out-of-bounds." --- Laura Dubuk
Invisible walls and glass keep Soldiers, Demo, and Engi in check. It is pretty interesting and says a lot about balance, that these classes would arguably be OP, especially Engi as unless you make these areas all unbuildable you have hidden teleporters for your team that a spy can't find or a Sentry a spy can't reach. Heavies can't get close to do effective damage, so this leaves Soldiers and Demos if you position well.
i'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but theres a map called 2fort revamped and it adds a way to get into that small room on the ceiling with the diagonal windows in the intel room

5:15 i remember that on Xbox360 you could somehow crouch on the stairs while going up and than you glitched out and you were able to put a tele exit there. After one person did it the whole srver went friendly and we built dispensers on the rooftops. you can do this on both sides and its super fun! you can even build a sentry on the rooftop and they cant kill it for some reason the invisible wall blocks their bullets or projectiles( i dont remember wich one) but the sentry can shoot them without a problem!
The blocked off parts of 2fort actually look like unfinished areas, so it isn’t hard to imagine that with some tweaking it could look like a complete map.
11:13 "I would love to see this in actual gameplay." - Look up AceTheOcarinaMaker's video "2fort but it's DESTRUCTIBLE!", thank me later. Also, no one ever will because it's not worth the effort, but I'd enjoy seeing a 2Fort World map where the map is just 2Fort, but with the invisible walls removed and *everything* modeled. All the spots that are like "Oh, we didn't model this because you're not supposed to see it." are filled in, and let's say that barn way out in the distance? Make that a real-ass barn that you can go to and be inside, and it has full collision and everything. Is that barn useful for gameplay purposes? Heck no. But it's interesting to look at. Also maybe add some extra props so classes other than Soldier, Demoman, and to a lesser extent Engineer and Scout can actually get around.
25:40 I wouldn't worry about that, since Snipers don't have the required mobility to access areas that high up anyway. Soldiers, demomen and sentry-jumping engineers would be a much greater concern.
The room with the big map is probably the only way a single player can take out the high ground sentries if the player enters it through that hallway window so it definitely has a purpose

Yeah I don't know I feel like invisible walls are a relic of the old days of gaming, they need to go. Nobody likes them. We understand why they're there, but they're annoying. I feel like if you wanna limit the play area, then fine but don't make the walls invisible, you gotta have something there that's easily identifiable as a map boundary. Plenty of games have done it before, you know, like a grid thing that becomes visible as you approach it, and then if you go past it you get the typical prompt like "You are leaving the combat area, get back in 5 seconds" type thing. The "Random Dots" on the map is where Mann Co. owns property. A lot in the us, some in Europe, a spot for the Asian maps in asia.
22:38 you actually used to be able to build up there when TF2 first came out i have fond memories of building ontop of the central tower opposite to the rocket.
this was way back then when we had no wranglers, and could not even pick up our buildings, we had to place buildings in specific areas and use them to place teleporters up onto higher ones just to get up there.
Omg I *LOVE* this version of it way more, looks way more alive and intristing
back in the xbox 360 days, people as engineer used an exploit in the intel entry stairs that come from the courtyard to escape the map and build teles the blu side really has so much more, the same person also managed to put a tele inside the room inside the ceiling room in the blu intel room
