Whether investing in stocks is Halal or Haram is a contentious issue in the Muslim community. Riba (interest) is the determining factor in whether a stock market share is considered Halal or Haram according to Islamic Shariah. Profit is earned through the performance of a company's shares rather than interest, making stock investing generally free from interest. However, the type of business is the second main concern after Riba. Companies that engage in prohibited products or elements such as gambling, Insurance, alcohol, haram meat, tobacco, etc. are not permissible.
Further, borrowing money or using leverage to invest in stocks is not allowed in Islam. Islamic scholars stress the importance of investing in ethical and Shariah-compliant companies. Muslims should understand these principles and seek guidance from qualified Islamic scholars before making investment decisions.
