    I notice that a lot of content creators for watercolor rarely show when they wet/clean their brush during process and when they don’t…and as a beginner, I find this is a crucial step that I feel I don’t understand and it affects my results…either my paint pots get contaminated from the previous used color or I wind up with a brush too saturated with water and get overly wet results. How one uses water is obviously critical and I feel it is rarely talked about. Wet on wet and wet on dry is certainly discussed, but not how often a brush goes into water and when you blot etc. I find, for example, when following a tutorial that whereas the instructor gets these clean lines or more opacity to their stroke, I get a very watery line or weak color…sometimes the fault might lie in not enough drying time in between, but often it seems like too much water on a brush or maybe the brush is too big….it looks to me in this video that you might touch a yellow right after a blue without rinsing…don’t your paints get contaminated ..? Hope my dilemma is clear. I love your videos and your work and would love your input. Many thanks!

      I see your point. Here is a tip (Leslie mentions this often too) Keep two water containers handy. You always wash your brush in one (this water ends up dirty. Once the brush is clean, you pick up clean water from the other water cup, which usually remains clean. It is always advisable to dry the tip of your brush to get excess water off before dipping it into your mix, otherwise it will keep diluting every time you clean your brush. Hope this makes sense and helps you with brush and water control. I value that this video is on real time, as sometimes it is hard to estimate how mixes are made.

      Yes, this is true. I’m sure others (like me) edit out empty space to keep the videos shorter. I do talk about my cleaning of the brush quite a bit on my Patreon videos and also in the painting livestream replays here on UA-cam. I always keep two large pickle jars, one for cleaning, one for rinsing, and sometimes a smaller jar just for wetting the brush. Check out my “watercolour tips” playlist for beginners tips. Hope that helps! 😊

      Another beginner here ... so many variables and I think it is worth selecting an artist and joining their Patreon ... highest tier you can afford and get some one on one. UA-cam presenters just cannot dive as deep because of time constraints in videos. That said, I am at the point of not quite committing ... recently retired and budget concerns ... BUT, I will!!

      I so agree. I think one reason is that the rinsing and blotting are often done off camera.

    Thank you. This was very helpful. It took me three years of painting before I dared to mix a color. Silly, right? Color mixing seemed like this abracadabra stuff that I would never be able to accomplish. Little by little I have dared to mix. Many times it’s been with awful results, but the fear is gone. I wish I’d seen this when I first started painting! Thanks again, Leslie.

    So many gems in here!
    I particularly appreciated the point about hues made with ultramarine blue being more suitable for foregrounds, while phthalo blue can work better in the background because it’s less distracting. Really valuable tip, thanks!

    Using as few colors as possible with more than one pigment is also a good idea to help reduce mixing mud. New gamboge is a double pigment color in Daniel Smith and in a lot of other brands. Pyan’s Grey and Neutral Tint are both triple pigments but they’re triple in most brands as well so be aware of the colors you choose. A few greens are also double pigments. Change your water often and have a second rinse cup of clean water to really get out the last bit of pigments out. Also if you use the same brushes you say use for other mediums that and make your watercolors muddy as well. Have dedicated brushes for your painting mediums. Now this is just an option and you can and should experiment to get the results you want.

    Thank you so much for posting. Your timing couldn't have been better. I am brand new (senior) to learning water colour painting. I've done my research on which tools which would work best for my lifestyle. How to apply a single colour to a page to make a colour chart which will stay with the palete. How to mix colours just seems to be the next logical step in my painting journey.💙

    I always love mixing lessons and feel I learn something new every time. In this video, I learned another way to use transparent red oxide 😊. I haven’t used it to shift my greens before, I always use something similar to your other warm/cool reds. I have been doing mixing charts and choosing colours for making new 6-pan and 12-pan travel palettes over the last couple of days and now I want to shift my colours again 😅. This was very helpful… thank you!

    I was trying to paint the other day and my paints (from watercolour pans, specifically Daler Rowney) and they were beading up into virtually nothing when I tried putting down even a single colour to use on my plastic palette. The only thing I can think is that my pans weren’t soft enough and maybe I was using too much water on the brush, but I also felt that if I used less I wouldn’t be able to pick any paint up either. Water control has always been my nemesis with painting in any of the water soluble mediums, lol.

    • @ShintogaDeathAngel
      @ShintogaDeathAngel Місяць тому

      Replying to my comment cos I can’t edit 🙄 the pans were Winsor & Newton. I have watercolour sets from both companies and for some dumb reason keep mixing them up if I don’t have them in front of me 😂

    Hi Leslie, I really enjoyed watching you explore the color combo's you can make with using just three colors in various ratio's. I do have a question about mixing a warm and a cool colors together. Aren't your creating a neutral color? I know that warms come forward and cools recede while neutrals tend to stay put. Can you explain this combination of warm and cools and how they will react in a painting a little bit more for me please?

    Any suggestions on how to train my eye to identify which version of a color is warm and which is cool? I can follow along and understand completely but in the quiet of me and my paint collection, I struggle to identify the cools and warms. It seems like I should be able to train my eye and not have to just memorize the warms and cools. Thank you for your videos - they are my favorite and have elevated my painting!!
