100 percent agree on the tipping VISA machines. In the beginning, it was the drive thru coffee locations, now its fast food, car washes, and gas stations. I always just click None, as the only time I tip is a sit down restaurant or service location like a spa.

The only time I tip is when I am at a sit down restaurant or when I am getting some service like a haircut. What is up with this tip culture? I shouldn't tip for poor or mediocre service.

The older you get, the less people tend to socialize with you in the U.S. Strangers barely smile because if you attempt it first, many will label you as a creepy old man. At my workplace in Texas with over 2000 employees, only a handful of co-workers talk to me unless they want you to do a job for them. Every meeting or event, I usually wind up sitting alone or the people around me pretend they don't notice me. So yeah, few are friendly. I miss the Philippines too.

My experience is the opposite as I am getting older I think I'm becoming my parents as I find myself in warm friendly conversations with random people in lines and restaurants like I chuckled at my folks for doing years ago.

I find the same, that its very difficult to make friends or socialize even if you join clubs or at work. Its very superficial as you get older unless they want something from you. While I'll agree its easy to chat with people that doesn't equate into anything else. This is one of the reasons I'm looking to sell everything and move overseas because the West has a male loneliness epidemic and something I care not to join after retirement. Plus the living expenses and tipping has gotten out of control in the USA.

Keep in mind that you’re in rural Wisconsin and Minnesota. In my experience folks in the more rural areas of the U.S. are much friendlier than in the big cities. If a foreigner visits only Minneapolis, San Francisco, LA, NYC, etc…they might think that we’re all crazy. The cost of things in the rural areas are also generally less expensive as well. A dinner for 4 in San Francisco might cost you $200 plus tip at a regular restaurant. While every country has its pros and cons, the average Filipino does seem friendlier and more happy than the average person here. Someone in the Philippines, who has what we consider nothing, will not only be friendly but also be willing to give you whatever they have if you are a visitor.

I have been here almost three years and that is not my experience at all. Almost everyone has their hand out begging for money. If you are not paying them to be nice I am mostly ignored. The service is not with a smile. I haven't had any big problems with bad service but it is definitely not service with a smile. They are usually sitting on their phones between orders and you have to get their attention. Thailand was so much better. I would much rather go to Thailand than the Philippines any day

You have been away for 5 years so the evolution of people's attitude does look a bit out of tune from what you remember. COVID had a major affect on the pysche of the people, then combine that with the unrest caused by the political divide and you have what you are now experiencing. The excessive tipping has gotten way out of control and the general population find it irritating. I believe that it first came about originally during COVID when people were braving the risks of catching the virus spread while trying to make a living especially in the eateries.

Angeles City has all the comforts of living in the states, without the expensive costs. If I want a pizza there are multiple places to get one, including pizza hut which I think is subpar. I'm originally from Germany. If I want real German food, beers, or liquors, there are 2 great German restaurants. If I want American food, there are multiple American chain restaurants, including Chili's, Denny's, Texas Roadhouse, TGI Friday. If I want Asian food - there are multiple Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian, and Thai restaurants. If I want to go to a Costco type store, there is S&R (actually affiliated with Costco), and a Landers store. If I want to go out at night, there are many places with Live Bands, Go-Go dancers, Karaoke, and Dance Clubs - I'm to old for waterfalls, but still young enough for clubbing. If I want to dust off my pilots license, there are ultralights at Clark. If I want to go on a get-away, Clark airport is 15 minutes away with flights all over the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, and Korea. If I want a longer get-away, Norwegian Cruise Lines has cruises leaving from Manila, Singapore, Taiwan, and Tokyo. And if you really want some excitement, you can take flying lessons at Clark and after a mere 10 hours of lessons, you get to Solo. Now that is exciting. Or, for something less challenging, there are tours available to Mt Pinatubo and some great scuba diving in nearby Puerto Galera.
Also, very important to us old farts is access to medical facilities. Angeles has some fairly modern hospitals, and one of the best, if not the best hospital, St. Luke's in Manila is only 2 hours by car, and Clark has flights to Thailand (which also has some great medical facilities) and the states. One of my neighbors here had a heart attack a few years ago. The doctors here stabilized him enough that he was able to fly back to the states, where he had quadruple bypass surgery. In a sleepy little town like Dumaguete he probably would have died.
So you can live the Philippines lifestyle without giving up all of your American comforts.

As a Filipino national, the USA has absolutely no say over her bank account in the PH. But once she is a US citizen, they have EVERY say over her money. The dollar is dying. I would suggest having your wife find an online job as a contractor while in the US that will allow remote work. Lots of work require American residence for tax purposes (not for profit or government entities). Which you can undercut if you live in the Philippines. The bonus effect is and gets to build on Social security while living in the Philippines. Updating spreadsheets for $20/hr is considered low wage for a financial analyst in the US but in the Philippines that's rich. Attach residence to a family members address as this is the key for establishing eligibility.

most restaurants in the metro manila area charge 10% service charge plus 12% VAT for 22% added. In USA most sales tax is around 7% plus whatever you tip. If you tip 15% plus 7% = 22%. So a wash really.

I haven't seen a 7% tax in decades. Here in Arizona you pay State and local taxes plus all the special taxes for whatever per project the government wants to do without the people's permission. The people vote down their proposals and they do it anyway and add a specialty tax. They say the people don't know what's good for them. Only we in the government know what's best. What's the point of voting? Most of the time we're paying around 11% or more.

Enjoyable times, hearts uplifting. Maya and You are trained and drilled automatically now in being able to hold out some without each other. Which you two Goldies will manage okay. Keep the u.s. financials(prices to be paid) experiences a bit artificially fenced off, cause otherwise it will have downer effects on enjoying all the nice aspects of your (short) visits and trips. I have been to the Philippines 5 times. The last time was this past January for one month there. It had been 34 years since I was last there. I’ll never go back again. I just can’t believe how Dumaguete has changed. 134,000 people and not one traffic signal. Crowded and thousands of motorcycles running around. No traffic rules. Do as they please. Dogs with mange running loose. The place is a cesspool and is not fit for a human being to live in. I married a Filipina there 37 years ago and I brought her to the U.S. shortly thereafter. The United States is the best country to my opinion and I’ll never leave it again. We just have lousy rotten politicians here. That’s the main problem.

If I pulled the trigger, I'd opt for Makati or BGC. Still cheaper than the states, good medical care, no brownouts, less animals running amok, but still get to be with and around good friendly people. You can always take an excursion to a nice beach for a getaway if you like. Buddy of mine moved to a small city in Oklahoma. He's been there for years and says it's lonely as hell because the people there treat you like a stranger unless your family's been there for a couple generations. Add to that the societal view of men here in the USA is men are all violent, patriarchal sh*tlords, roaming the land, looking for women to oppress. What an insult.. The Philippino people, on the other hand, respct men and revere the elderly. The women, in general make far, far better mates...albeit I'd never, ever take a Filipina back to the States.

@bigmike1976 I agree 100%. I have been here on and off for nearly 3 years waiting on immigration. I am so ready to go home and stay home. The Philippines is so overrated. The level of filth and other stressors is constant. I had to stay in Manila for about a year and it's a fricking nightmare. I have also been to Cebu and Mindoro. Cebu is so overcrowded. I scuba dive and that is nice but that's it. Everything else is worse than I was told. The prices are only cheaper because the quality is so low. Just two nights ago our neighbors were playing music so loud it was rattling our windows. No respect for the people around them. If you say anything you get the standard filipino response you don't like it go home. I do like Mindoro but that is only with the grading on a curve based on the sh*thole of Manila. They say Makati is nice but you end up paying about the same as in the US and have to live in shoebox sized condo. No way am I ever going back to Manila. I will only come back to the Philippines in general so my wife can visit family. One month is the longest I will ever spend in this ridiculous place again.

They know they can't afford all the stuff on the market but they have a smartphone and that's enough. No need to drive yourself miserable because of all the things we think we need or worrying about bills, they club together and buy a huge bag of rice and whatever else and that's sorted. 10 family members living in a little house with everyone contributing works out ok.

Most countries the minimum salary is 50-60% of the average salary. Manila the minimum is 15000 pesos a month and average is around 25,000 a month so 60%. In the states and Canada the minimum wage is 25-30% of the average wage. They should be putting an extra 10% on the cost of a meal and removing the obligation to tip.

Yes Gio - life and money attitudes comparing the US to Philippines is apples & oranges. Thanks to poor education and bad politics I see Americans have become very aggressive and money focused and do not care about friendliness or following the rules in society. I used to eat out 4 days a week and have fun conversations at these places. Now I eat out maybe 2 times a month. It has become way to expensive to eat out. I always select "No Tip" and if the waitress was good I will leave a cash tip but usually close to 10%. I hear stories of waitresses making $500 to $1500 a night in tips on weekends just to carry food from A to B. So I do not feel the need to tip a large percentage. The Philippines all cash & friendly society is the better way to go. There are good reasons why so many retired expats from all over the world live in the Philippines !!
