@@EvilParagon4 I would say that Australia is more America's pacific lapdog. I mean that to reflect more poorly on the US than Australia. Hell, we pretty much led a soft coup against Gough Whitlam (with the help of a much younger Rupert Murdoch), and even that hasn't made them turn away from the US. Then again, personally I love Australia and the culture of the country. I think it's good that the Anglosphere (US, UK, Canada, NZ, and Australia) sticks together on the world stage, but I don't think the US should browbeat any dissent among the other countries.

Italy has the 8th largest GDP in the world, and because China doesn’t qualify for the G7 (not democratic) that means Italy fully deserves membership. The nation that doesn’t deserve membership is Canada. India’s GDP is much larger.

I went to JJ's high school and actually wrote an article where I explained which school represented which country (based on nothing but stereotypes).
Charles Best (our school) = Canada
Centennial = USA
Port Moody = UK
Pinetree = Japan
Terry Fox = Germany
Riverside = Italy
Gleneagle = France
It didn't get me any dates, however I did date a girl in university who remembered it (she was unhappy that her school was Italy), without knowing that I had written it. It was the most exciting moment of my life.

As a UK citizen, our political culture is thinking we are still a necessary, important, and massive world-superpower.

As an American I like to think the UK still holds at least some of that power. Especially being our closest ally
jane can’t dance as an American, the way I see it, because of the UK’s past super power status and Empire, though its military power has significantly weakened from its height, it has parlayed it’s previous dominance into more of a soft super power in a legal, financial, and cultural sense. Britain’s common law legal system has been hugely influential to many world democracies today including America’s And it remains the figurehead for its commonwealth with member nations. It also has a prominent outsized position as a financial powerhouse, partly as a result of its common law tradition, and it also has a huge cultural impact from literature, with Shakespeare being translated into countless other languages, to having the worlds most famous royal family and head of state. You guys definitely have a lot of heft and your military is still top-notch if not as far reaching

As an Italian, I think it'd be pretty great.

You'd be better not watch a video on italian politics made by a person like JJ whose understanding of the Italian political system is superficial to say the least.Whoever says that italian politics are discontinous bringing the frequent changes of goverment doesn't even understand the basics of the italian political system.
Simply put the party leaders and the president of the council of the ministers (the title of the "prime minister") are almost always different people. In Italy there are a lot of parties and there is always a coalition goverment. The goverments frequently change but the politicies usually do not, it is an extremely parlamentarian system. Same majority always equal same politics for a goverment. Then the President (or chairman there is no difference between those to words in italian) of the council act not as boss of the goverment but as a Primus inter pares, the ministers are nominated by the "cerimonial" president on "suggestion" Of the President of the council (from there PdC), but the PdC chose the ministers with the party leaders. The "cerimonial" President that has a lot more power than the german counterpart also acts as a stabilizer of the system, stopping parties to drastically changes previous italian politics, expecially on foreign policies.
So a change of the PdC in italy means nothing, Renzi resigned and the Gentiloni goverment was formed, the former minister for foreign affairs became PdC, the former interior Minister became foreign affair minister and there was a new interior minister, no other changes, they had almost identical politics. We even have a term for those changes: rimpasto, working again with the same dough.
There was a very different change in 2019 the Conte I goverment lost his majority because a party left and a new goverment was formed with part of the goverment and part of the opposition, the new Conte II goverment is completely different from the Conte I, even if there is the same prime minister. This type of change is called a ribaltone, big flip. the last one before the conte one was in 1947.

As a northern European(German), I think I have an interesting relationship with Italy.
I really like it! I studied there for a semester, so I kind of know the language. The country is beautiful, and many of my friends agree. We often long for the dolce vita spirit, that you simply can't get anywhere else.
We are jealous of Italian families that actually stick together. We listen to Italian music, because it has so much soul.
But we also feel sorry for Italy, and don't know how to help. The contrived politics, the really quite strong north-south divide, economic problems, a beaurocracy that's somehow even more restrictive than the German one. Widespread mismanagement, but all the individuals are fine! Even Italian academia is excellent! Maybe their successful and influential past is a problem, giving them a backwards-facing mindset.
But damn is it amazing and I would happily move to Italy again.

The UK exerts much more power through international finance, business, education and culture than it does through politics these days.
I think it's power in finance and education will be diminished once Brexit is done, especially if its a hard Brexit. More companies are realising the folly of putting too much of their stock into London and are spreading themselves around EU cities instead. Not that London will disappear as an important city, but it will be reduced.

Britain continues to have the major advantage of having the English language ready installed. Whilst America has called the shots in geopolitics it has remained the language with the most inbuilt soft-power. It's also especially useful that many nations (especially the Americans) think that a British accent makes the speaker sound educated and intelligent.
Of course we're just as much a bunch of dimwits as any nation, but most Britons operating outside the country use the accent to their advantage. Convince any audience you know what you're talking about and half the battle is already won.
@@krombopulos_michael Definitely not. London could never be outmatched in the financial world stage because the City of London exists. The City of London is an autonomous state within London and England, since 1066, with it's own laws, it's own democracy and is essentially the world finance sector.

Presumably because there’s no real comparative to the United States in the area, as JJ explained, then, Canada was only in the G7 because of the US.
Canada was only included because the US required it. Neither Canada nor Australia are powerful or influential enough to be a G7 member

Satvik Sharma I’d say both Canada and Australia should be part of G20, but not G7 which is supposed to be the most exclusive group of powerful nations. Only the US, UK, France, Japan, Germany should be a part, and China and Russia if you don’t consider the democratic aspect

Mainly in Western Europe, Italy is considered a poor country of the Mediterranean. It has the second largest industrial economy of the whole European continent (Italian industrial sector is bigger than French, British or Russian ones) and therefore it is in world's top 5.
Although the prime minister is changing, Italian bureaucracy is stable and guarantees continuity in foreign and military policies (military industries are highly developed in Italy and Italian troops are displaced in Middle East). Additionally, the Democratic Party (center-left) formed coalition executives for 8 out of 10 last years. For its past (fascism) Italian politics fears about strong individual leaderships and prefers coalition governments, such as in many European countries (Belgium, Denmark, etc.)
it's been more than 2 years and Conte is still there. Matteo Renzi can squeal as much as he wants, he's not getting the premiership back, nobody likes him, especially after he created his own party....GENIOUS MOVE (cause not even the Dems liked him anymore lol). Conte is doing his best as far as i'm concerned, i'm fine with him.

The fear of dictatorship does very well explain the volatility. It's interesting how much totalitarian regimes of the 20th century still affect modern politics in Europe. Each country is distinctly shaped by their history with them.

Italy was admitted to the G7 back when it was formed as a bit of a balancing agent against all the more prominent key members (USA, UK, Germany, France), much like Canada was added at Ford's bidding and Japan to have it on board rather than as an outsider holding a grudge.
Many people forget about Italy's economic might, associating the country with tourism and high-end consumer goods, but in reality it is a major player in many less known industries, particularly when it comes to machinery and technology, as well as pharmaceuticals.
Yeah...for example I'm Italian and I was surprised when I stayed in Sydney and literally every power outlet and light switch were all made in Italy. Everywhere.
That is perhaps because both Italy and Australia have an affinity for annoyingly and pointlessly weird sockets :D

Enrico Letta, the head of a center-left coalition led by the italian Democratic Party (which is similar to the american party of the same name), coming at power following the general election of early 2013.
Matteo Renzi, who took over after Letta resigned.
Paolo Gentiloni, who took over after Renzi lost a referendum, which caused him to step down.
Giuseppe Conte, a jurist who became PM as the head of a coalition of the populist big-tent 5 Star Movement and the far-right League formed in the wake of the early 2018 general election. This coalition flipped last year when the 5 Star Movement terminated its alliance with the League, turning over to the Democratic Party again, though Conte kept his position, due to being close to the 5 Star Movement (without being an actual member).
How popular is Conte? He seems to be generally well liked, which is rare for Italian politicians
Warwick EnG His strength (and his weakness at the same time) is the fact that he’s not a lifelong politician. Until 2 years ago he was “just” a mid-tier attorney, orbiting around the 5-star movement party, but with no ambitions to make it to the top-level political arena. Sometimes you choose your path to leadership, sometimes that path chooses you.

Actually Italy's top 3 exports are based on petroleum, pharmaceuticals and engineering. It has a highly advanced scientific based economy. Yes, food, fashion and design are important but not as big as the above 3.
it's not what we're known for. For example, not a lot of people think about it but we build a large number of ships, cruise liners, container ships, oil tankers and we've been doing so for centuries.
He is talking about soft power. Even Japan, of course Japan’s main exports aint anime, sushi and robot toys, but it is what the rest of the world consumes in terms of entertainment and food. The US’ biggest exports in GDP isnt some damn Marvel movies and pop stars, but it is how they influence culture globally.

It has supported a lot countries like Palestine, China, Libyan jamahriya and Chilean opposition groups during Pinochet's dictatorship in Chile. Meanwhile it still manages to stay under NATO's umbrella and keep being a liberal democracy

I live in the US. I’ve had the amazing opportunity to meet a lot of international students, and the one myth I’ve felt entirely pervasive- is the image of the American as wealthy urban yuppies, as though we were all just like the characters on the tv show ‘friends’. In my experience, foreigners have been shocked to discover the existence of agriculture and poverty. This seems to me a pretty defining myth of the moment, especially considering the Trump emergence and so-called ‘silent majority’.
I also think foreigners don’t realize how sad most of us are. I’ve travelled around Latin America, and what always shocks me about these poorer countries (and this applies to rural America too, to be fair)- what shocks me is how happy they are. Americans have troublingly high rates of suicide, drug abuse, divorce; low rates of self-reported happiness, long term friendships... even the rate of starting a new business has fallen drastically in the last decade or so. The underemployment rate is through the roof. Painkillers and antidepressants are being handed out like candy. Civic culture has all but shriveled up.
I think, and many Americans I know tend to agree- that our material success has come at the expense of our emotional well being.
This is mostly the case in many developed countries nowadays sadly.
Though the US is a big place and though this might be true in New York or California may not be true in Alabama or Texas.
@@genghiskhan5701 I can attest to that too, it's hard to get a whole picture of such a big and diverse country. Even US citizens cannot really grasp how diverse the country is in terms of people, ideas, and values. I'm a first generation American, born and raised in LA, California, and it is worrying how depressing the people here have become. When I visit Texas and Florida, everyone just seems to be so much happier. Florida, in particular, just seems like such a lively place.
The material excess we have only benefits the wealthy. The other 90% of us are suffering and struggling.

G7 is like when your classmates in the back row cause trouble fighting and the principal puts them in a student council and holds them accountable for not fighting again. Nobody else in the class cares until they start making decisions that affect you directly. That's when you say wtf just happened.
That's exactly it. The decisions they make at G7 Summits are for the entire world. Sometimes the EU makes decisions that affect other countries especially when they are exporting to a EU country but most of the decisions are for EU countries.

You know its ironic how sometimes what Americans do in foreign interventions then comes back and bites them in the ass, from supporting Mujahadid fighters that then went and did 9/11 from arming drug gangs to fight communism in latin america that went and created mega cartels that smuggle tons of drugs and humans into the US to creating the current situation in the Koreas.

i am really impressed by the quality of this video (or at least the part about germany). our war policy isn't often discussed about in media i watch, but it's a huuuuuuge thing for us. there are so big discussions about the wars we fight in as a member of the nato and how we fight in them.

Hello from Italy, this is a message to all the people that question the presence of Italy in the G7. Please, read and LEARN. What do you exactly mean by saying that Italy comes from a "unique southern european" tradition as opposed to the shared western european culture of the other members? So that you know: almost all of western european culture originates from the ancient greek-roman period (remember the Roman Empire? Almost all of Europe under roman rule, the building of cities, streets, bridges and all... and tens of romance languages derived from latin like spanish, french, portuguese, etc spread across Europe, now spoken all over the world? ). After the middle ages, it was followed by the Renaissance (remember Leonardo Da Vinci & friends? Like Raffaello, the other Ninja Turtles and too many others to name them all) and the Scientific Revolution (remember Galileo and his telescope for example?). All of these events started and developed mostly in Italy. Have you ever heard that Italy is the country that holds the highest number of UNESCO sites in the world? Italy is a relatively small country and its population is relatively small, but our global influence and cultural impact through history in arts, sciences and discoveries of any kind has been huge. Italy did a lot for the progress of humanity. We have never had a global empire and I am proud of this: I wouldn't be proud of being part of a country good at exploiting other peoples and other pleople's lands like other countries have extensively done and keep doing today (you mentioned the hatred that the french get in turn for what they did and do). Nowadays the best scientific labs in the world are full of italian researchers and no country in Europe has provided more astronauts to the European Space Agency than Italy. Many components and sections of the International Space Station were produced here by italian companies. No one knows, but the first industrial microprocessor, on which all of modern technology is based on, was invented by an italian engineer called Federico Faggin.Then of course one should mention more mundane things like food and fashion but I guess you know that part. We're not pizza, pasta and gangsters as Hollywood likes to depict us, with almost all the americans bringing this narrative on and on because they like to stereotypize people, celebrating italian american gangsters in movies (very harmful thing to do because, you like it or not, they feel celebrated by movies about them). Italy is a highly developed modern industrialized country, full of hard workers who get by every day and make our country great in spite of a mostly miserable (so far since the 1970s) political class. Our true faults are having fallen to fascism about one hundred years ago (I think we are still paying for that because of the ruin it brought us in and the subsequent position of inferiority and mortification in which it put us at the end of the war, despite the efforts and the sacrifices that the partisans of the Resistenza (CLN) made to redeem our country) and not having succeded yet at totally eradicating the cancers of mafia (by the way, it was strongly revived after WW2 thanks to the americans, who favoured them for the informations that italian american gangsters gave to the US army about how to land in Sicily) and political corruption. But we're working on it, the debate is huge, and things are hopefully changing.The latter are the things we have to fight against every day, that we have to defeat in the first place before being allowed to be competitive on the world stage. Italian workers, artisans and most of the enterpreneurs are true heroes. Sorry for the lenght of my speech, but I can't stand it when I see my country stereotypized. Study Italy a bit more and come visit (in a better period of course), we have a very interesting history. Ciao!

Rome ruined the world. It conquered and killed lots of countries and forced them to assimilate enough to be acceptable. It was one of the fire empires that spread across the continent. You DO have a history of imperialism. And fascism. And sexism. Also, why the hell are Italians so sensitive?? Can you not accept any criticism? Maybe you shouldn't be G7 nation if you're all so thin-skinned.
I dont think that because 2000 years ago you owned all of europe that you should be considered a great power in the modern day. In fairness, I also don't think Canada shouls be on the list either.
In true fairness, the G7 seems entirely pointless and the criteria for getting on are so vague that any nation's membership is arbitrary.

In the U.K. there are physical and people’s personal relics of the empire all over the place. It’s incredibly common for roads to be named after former colonies such as a ‘Canada Street’ that I live very close to! As you also mentioned, stories of relatives involved in empire remain common. My own father spent much of his childhood in Singapore. One starts to realise the extent of this when you start googling English celebrities (of a certain age that is) and see how many were in fact born in places such as Kenya or India.
The G7 is a very fascinating topic! This is just what I needed!

As an American, I could assume the G7 nations are some of our closest allies, and I find it coincidental that I'm learning German, Japanese and Latin and I have been starting to gain an interest in attempting to learn some French so I could read Dumas, one of my favorite authors. I have even considered moving to the UK for graduate school xD

I heard in a college class that the group at first was the 5 largest economies, but when France hosted the meeting, they invited Italy to come to have another Latin/non Anglo or Germanic member. And that then the Canadians spoke to the US about it, as the Canadian economy waa larger than the Italian economy. So when the US hosted the meeting, we invited Canada to come.

One myth abouyt my country - Canada -, you actually addressed in a "wrong" way: Quebec is actually pretty active in its independance process and there is a clear distinction between Quebec and the rest of Canada in terms of culture and political identity.

I'd just like to say that your description of UK politics was honestly pretty great. To add to what you said about the UK, because of our quite influential past, a lot of people are quite nationalistic. It tends to also manifest in weird ways, such as feeling inferior to the US and hating Americans, really hating the Irish, or disliking either the north/south (the UK actually has a strong north/south divide), though these examples are just the most common ones.

same for Germany to be honest. East-West is not a Problem for the young, and we as a people have overcome the holocaust demographically. Still all foreigners find to talk about Germany is that. Why not the bureaucracy, or the fact we pay the highest tax rates in the world. Or something other than those 12 years?

I was thinking the same thing. Canada aswell. It would make sense to give Canada the boot and add South Korea, Australia, and Spain. Maybe India, South Africa, and Brazil as well when they’re more stable.
