They wear quickly, yes, but the wear being so much deeper in the center with very little near the sides is because of the poor fitment. The tire being squeezed by the edge of the wheel causes the center to bulge out, putting far more pressure on that part of the tire. When the load isn't evenly distributed you lose the benefits of the extra width and wear through them significantly faster than if you have tires properly sized for your wheels.
If you’re gonna run that size on that rim you need to compensate with lower air pressure.. That will even out the contact patch and give you consistent wear side to side. 28psi would have probably done wonders for you.

I have been running 295-40-20 nitto 555G2 on my stock rims for over 8000 miles and 8 months. They are about a 1/4 worn. I have done a few small burnouts. I daily this car.even in through the cold winter. If those tire were worn just in the center then the rim size caused it. That wear is not from the rim diameter. You just bought a tire with a low tread wear rating. Soft compound.
Jay Coates the message is still the same. The bigger the tire you put on your stock wheels. The bigger the risk you take of a blow out and reducing the life on your tires dramatically. Not to mention with 305s I never had any traction at all, causing wear every time I got on it. Not a good situation all around.
Jay Coates, I ran the tires he had blown out but in the correct size. Had 17k miles on them. So we he compound is only part of the factor. Looks like his contact patch was actually smaller because they were too big for the 9.5 inch rim. On my Scat Pack I ended up putting Hellcat wheels with Toyo Proxis 4 plus 275s, and it was amazingly better
Thanks for the vid bro, I guess that could and will damage your suspension in long term as well. So yeah, definitely go with 275 at max if you’re on stock rims
Correct. Also, one could argue that rear alignment comes into play, even if the correct rim width is used, so that contact patch is correct. However, that's more "technical". Personally, my 2 Hellcats run the reproduction replica 10.5" wide wheels with 305s on back. No problems.😃
For the record before anyone else decides to say I'm a liar. Not one bit of this video is false and is an accurate example of what a soft tire compound mixed with too wide of a tire on a 9" wide wheel can do. I got about 7,000 miles out of them and they blew! Thanks for watching.
Honestly I'm running 305 on my stock ss wheels 9.5 rear and they hold up splendidly well no weird wear or anything hope you realize a burnout big or small eats a good crunch of life. There's plenty of factors that could contribute to how fast a tire wears down heavy foot/spirited driving, I got 9000 miles out of my stock good year f1s and I put them through 2 burn outs and plenty of canyon carving. Although I do agree the wear on yours were ridiculous for 7000 miles. Hope its settled out and you are good now. But yeah I run 305 just fine lol
Blown away by all the guys hating on him for this mistake. For fucks sake he made a video admitting to his mistake and trying to help others avoid what he did. And also has stated numerous times that he’s new to the auto scene so he’s just now learning stuff a lot of us learned quite a bit earlier. Props for making this video and don’t listen to the keyboard quarterbacks. Everyone has learned a lesson the hard way when it comes to our toys, and anyone who pretends they haven’t is a dim witted fuck stick.
So at no point did you notice the tires were bald and thought maybe I should change those soon? Did you research tire compounds to learn a sport tire with a softer compounds life span compared to a normal tire designed for mostly street use? I'm glad your warning people but you should have researched more. Coming from sport bikes I know running a tire that's to fat pinches it causeing and higher crown in the center of the tire cause its being smushed from the sides so it can't expand width wise like its supposed to so it expands hight wise this causes the uneven wear combine that with a sport compound tire you dont have a setup that will last very long. And probably a lack of grip over what the tire can really do in the proper setup. The sears employee should have warned you how pinching the tires would cause excess wear but that's also on you its your car and your life I probably wouldn't have made a video ether till I got the new tires cause most companies want honor a warranty for the misuse of a product that causes it to break or wear prematurely. But idk maybe they'll be cool and honor it anyway.
@@InnoV8Official They also look overinflated, you have been not using the whole tyre, this is common when dickheads fit tyres and recommend the wrong pressure so it ends up bowing out in the center. look at a bike tyre when it inflates to a point. I have ran goodyear F1 tyres for years I purchased the first set out in the UK and they last the gip when I cane it and when I am driving normal I can't fault them. The first thing is I fill my tyres with Nitrogen and two I have the pressure set so that the whole width of the tyre is in contact with the road.
Good info man! Yeah those tires were definitely too big. I didn't know the 9 inch wheel couldn't handle that size tire. I know so many people who make this mistake.
Dont know what happened to cause such a catastrophic failure. Have been running 295 40 20 Toyo PROXIES ST II's on 20x9 Charger SRT wheels on my Magnum for the last 2+ years. Zero issues so far. WWMM member here. Bets of luck with the new tires, and the warranty issue.
I'm not sure if the tread wear has anything to do with size. Goodyear F1's have a soft compound and do wear out much more quickly than most other brands I've tried. You didn't specify how many miles you put on them in six months, but its not uncommon for very high performance tires to last as little as 10-15k miles, which many people can do in six months. But do agree that 305s are too big for 9 inches....
I know sometime,no matter what you do you can put to wide of a tire on a specific wheel. But I think a lot of people try to run the same air pressure. In some cases you can lower the air pressure and the tire will put more meat to the ground and be more even.
@Destroyer Grey Productions, I see some of the comments are not good and some are literally insulting. I would like to Thank You for having the guts to post this, so others can see what can actually happen to a tire too wide for the rim. The tire is forced to bow out on the flat contact surface, thus why the tire shows severe center wear, and the sidewalls are not in straight alignment causing the drifting rear end effect as the tire shifts back and forth under driving pressure on the rim. Now here is the information that many don't know that think they know it all, there is a good reason the Scat Pack 392 came with 245 width tires. They are the drive line fuse so to speak and are expendable so the drive line itself is not over stressed, and the tires will spin vs hooking hard and breaking something else in the drive line, like the differential, driveshaft, or transmission. It is much cheaper to replace tires than a transmission, and even though the transmission is rated for the Scat Packs horsepower, it is matched to run 245 tires, not 315s that are 7 times wider than the 245s and are heavier as well. When you go to wider rear rims to run wider rear tires you increase drive line backlash and stress, the second planned failure point is the driveshaft, and it will fail at the center support carrier bearing, usually the rubber support fails first, allowing the driveshaft to flop inside the bearing housing. If you are unaware the Scat Pack runs the same Transmission and OEM Two Piece Driveshaft as the 5.7L R/T does. So even with the correct width rims to run up to 315s back there, if no other measures are taken to strengthen the drive line you are way past Dodges design safety handling specifications, so you can start the failure time clock count down, it is not if it will happen it is when. David
Dang bro. Thanks for the warning. I would of thought they would last a lot longer than 6 months. But obviously the smaller rims weren't supporting them.
hemiJL8 they would last longer if the wheels were trying to split through them. 😂 Oh well, live and learn. Money can be made again. Just trying to let people know not to do this, it's super dangerous!
What a lot of people don't understand, is that these cars are "pay to play." People put cheap tires on a near 500 hp muscle car and wonder why they don't last long. People put much wider tires on stock 9" wheels to avoid forking out the cash for a new set of wider wheels to go with the tires for proper fit and wonder why they have a blowout. People also try to run a summer only track tire on a daily driver... Of course the tires are gonna get shredded on the crap public roads across America. You get what you pay for, or in some cases, you miss what you won't pay for. I know the video is old, but this topic is still very much alive and well in the community. Also, I'm just a random dude ranting and not trying to call you out specifically. I've seen hundreds of guys do this.
The wider tires will still throw the car around even with the correct wheel size. The grooves in the road are from regular traffic small tire cars. Wide tires do that no matter what you drive. Looks like you also over inflated the tires if the wear is mostly in the middle. The loss of traction is simple. Pounds per square inch. Rubber on ground to weight of the car. Goodyear F1 is not a real good tire to begin with. I would stick with 295 tires as an extreme maximum width for 9" wheels.
@@lutcher95 295 would be ok for stock or even coilover suspension mods. I run 325 on my heavily modified truck that has a 4-link. I do not feel the road like what has been said previously. I think it all depends on the side profile.
Glad you are both ok man. I've been running the Aturo AZ850 and they are great tires dry and wet conditions. I even drove in slight snow with no issues. If your new tires don't work out look into them. Put your bulldog in some vids also, love the markings on it, nice looking dog bro.
You knew damn well that fitting those tires on a 9 Inch wheel was possibly going to be an issue because you clearly asked Sears if they would work and you wouldn’t have asked that if you didn’t already know it might have been an issue..... and why the hell would you wait until the tires got that damn bad before taking them off the vehicle??
Had the same tires. Very soft tire may last 10k miles at best. You had to much tire pressure on one and the other not enough. You can tell by the wear one wore in the middle too much air and the other where the rim was due to car weight.
I think you may have had them a little over inflated. Iv ran thoese same tires on my pro charged 6.4 (aggressive daily driving) and got about 7 or 8months out of them. They don't last to long but I also ran 315/35R20s micky Thompson ET drag radials on my stock 9inch rim and got a decent life out of thoese(about 8months also) thoese kinda tires don't come with much life. But they shouldn't have worn out like that. I usually run mine at 30psi due to them being over sized to get the full width of the tire. Hope you have better luck with your next set. I got tired of spending redicioulous amounts of money on tires so now I'm running the 275/45R20 AZ850 and they look and handle great for the price.
Could be. Just didn't have much knowledge about tires when I got these and I wanted to spread some awareness that these tires won't last long and with them being slicks can be super dangerous to a novice.. like I was. So this video is for the newbies looking for wider tires/types. Appreciate the comment and the info man!
I felt the same kind of shifting too, and for my Challenger it was my front tires. The middle of my good year f1 eagles were also worn in the middle. My tires were actually 245s! Maybe the previous owner had them on the back, I don't know. But I got them replaced before I ended up getting in a reck. This is a good video/ppl need to hear this.
Soft compound. Nothing more nothing less. Super soft compound means great grip but low miles. On our race cars/street cars get 3 to 6 months on a super soft compound. Gotta pay if you wanna play.
This in why in Europe we have a legal minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the entire tire if the company did what they have done to you in the UK they would be fined heavily.
First, telling me they are 6 months old tells me nothing. "Commuting" doesn't help either. How many miles are on those tires? Assuming you have a 'normal' amount of commuting miles, thats 8k at the very most. No tire gets to that condition in 8k miles. You can have your front end 3" out of alignment, and you are not going to destroy a tire to the point of cord showing in 8k miles. Your 'one small burnout' is complete bologna. Making sure you have the properly matched tire size to your rims IS important, and having them mismatched will cause excessive wear, among other issues. But this level of wear is ridiculous. You are not being honest with us, nor yourself.
I bought some YSM-360 20x9 wheels with 295/45ZR20 Toyo Proxies. The manufacturer I bought the wheels from said 295 or a 305 would be fine. Same wheels that are on the hell cat. No problems here at all fitment or wear . Seems you are just trying to get money back from tires that looks like John Force done burn outs in.
Good advice. But Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires were stock on my '13 Charger Daytona. They were trashed after 27 thousand miles. I'd be weary of that particular tire.
Bro. Goodyear F1's are notoriously a short life tire, because they're a super soft compound track tire. They are grippy but soft and that makes them wear fast... But they're grippy because they're TRACK TIRES! They were never designed to be daily driven on the road! Having them worn out at 6 months on the car they were on, is not abnormal. Just stop buying performance tires if you want them to last.
The F1s are summer performance tires, you are right when you say that these are meant to be driven hard but, only for a few thousand miles. On top of that, see how your tread was worn more in the center of the tire rather to be worn more evenly across the tire? That means the tire was over inflated, it's like standing on your toes rather than your whole feet! Sorry to bang on your head but, learn from this and if you want to have a better performance with a stickier tire, you should go with a wider wheel to help you get more grip out of the contact patch (area where the tire touches the road). Happy motoring!
its not the tire size .......its the tire compound ....... DO NOT buy track tires for daily use.......look at the treadwear rating if its 250 or less they will wear out very quickly .......for daily driven cars always go 350 treadwear or higher thats the only way you will get at least 30,000 miles out of your tires .....
Alright I'm gonna teach you guys something. Stop saying just 305 or 315 blah blah. Because the width and rim size make the difference. Dont believe me or understand what I'm saying take a 305/55r18 and 305/55r15 ( just throwing random numbers out there) they will be two different size tires. Now if your comparing the same width and rim then yes itll be bigger.
I highly doubt "1 small burnout" with 6 months of driving will cause anything near this. One, being did you not notice any wires poking out? OR even the wires atall. I mean i can see the tread on my tire when i stand behind my car. I get it isnt safe but i HIGHLY doubt this was 6 months with 1 SMALL burnout. Maybe you floored from a stop and left some smoke but i just dont see how itd be possible for a tire to be in that bad of shape. Ive burned off a set of tires of my challenger and my tires were WORN from the center of the tire JUST like yours hence why im saying tires took more damage then what your stating. But hey i feel ya on the dont stretch a tire to fit on any rim.
5.7GREGG 🧐 lol.. feel free to read my responses to others who asked the same thing. The message is clear here, a 305 should never be put on a 9" wheel, ever in any circumstances. If the shop agrees to do it.. they are risking your safety. 😎🤙
5.7GREGG keep in mind, I'm not lying on my channel about what I'm doing nor misleading. I don't drive my car like a grandma, but I also don't race unless a Honda tries to pull on me from a light. 😂 I'll keep it completely real with everyone and be transparent as possible which is why I show my mess ups in videos when I do a mod and don't hide it. I show people what happens and warn them. This is all a learning process for me and I'm glad to share it with all of you.
Um @Destroyer Grey Productions - You seem like a decent dude... You do understand soft tires (Especially Eagle F1's) and how long they will last. Has nothing to do with your tire size.
Uh... I put atturo az850 315 30 20s on my 9 inch scat pack wheels... a year ago... and I still have plenty of tread left. Goodyear eagle f1s are shit tires, and although atturos are cheaper, they last a lot longer than goodyear, and are more grippy. 315s do work on a 9 inch! Just use atturo az850s!

Jay Coates and probably over inflated.
I've seen it happen before on a smaller wheel.
Definitely an informative video. I hate that the situation happen the way it did. This video definitely needs to be shared.
But idk maybe they'll be cool and honor it anyway.
thewilltobechill I made this video to warn people.. not to make the same mistake I did. Lol
David
those f1s wont last long uner any conditions ,those are racing tires , extra grip means softer rubber.
Hindsight: don’t go to Sears for this stuff and don’t let someone else’s opinion be your due diligence
It's so funny how different guys get ripped off in different ways from different things but definitely appreciate the share for us to see👌
What a lot of people don't understand, is that these cars are "pay to play." People put cheap tires on a near 500 hp muscle car and wonder why they don't last long.
Was gonna chuck some 295 on my 20x9, think I'll go 275, thanks for the info bro
295 is waaaay to fat for a 9 inch wheel. you need like a 10 minimum or 10.5 even.
Awesome video brother. I put Atturo AZ 850’s 275/40/20 on my 9 inch wheel . They hook great as well
Hemi Joe392 I have the same tire size ( rear) on my charger no issues.
295? What's the exact tire size you would go with in 295?
@@lutcher95 295 would be ok for stock or even coilover suspension mods. I run 325 on my heavily modified truck that has a 4-link. I do not feel the road like what has been said previously. I think it all depends on the side profile.
@@patrickorlesky4369 Thank you because I wanted to get a bigger tire on my stock rims. I have 275 but I wanted to go with something a little wider.
I run 9" wheels on the front with 275/40 and 10" on the rear with 295 /40 on my 300csrt8
well the problem is sears... i had an issue with them in 2001 and never again!! entire wheel came off the highway
20x10 wheel fits on a 295/40?
295 on 10 is it's max
Do you think it’s safe to put 275/40/20 on 8 wides ?
This has nothing to do with tire size, it is a tire compound issue.
Glad you are both ok man. I've been running the Aturo AZ850 and they are great tires dry and wet conditions. I even drove in slight snow with no issues. If your new tires don't work out look into them. Put your bulldog in some vids also, love the markings on it, nice looking dog bro.
CALIWRYDER250 haha, maddie the majestic monster! I'll look into those tires. I've had a few people tell me about them. Thank you!
@@InnoV8Official can't go wrong with em bro! I'm getting my 2nd pair and I've had my srt392 for 2years
ive had my 17 challenger hellcat a month yet and have already destroyed a set of rear tires in less than 500 miles
Ive done 275 on stock rt rims in rear
730BULLIES I did the same
Your tire problem is that girl standing in front of your Challenger, sneaking the car out at night lol just kidding
Milestar MS932XP Radial Tire, 245/45ZR20 103W these tires are awesome on my 392. They stick well. They are cheap and great.
Gotta go wider! 245's are choking your power supply!
I smoke everyone though.
Theadford Aston's Media really cheap tires, if you still recommend I’ll buy some. I gotta admit price seems too good to be true.
So tires have been great and trustworthy. You won't win a race from a dig though. I am actually going to go wider next set.
You knew damn well that fitting those tires on a 9
Inch wheel was possibly going to be an issue because you clearly asked Sears if they would work and you wouldn’t have asked that if you didn’t already know it might have been an issue..... and why the hell would you wait until the tires got that damn bad before taking them off the vehicle??
Don't do this : drive on worn out tires... Wheel size won't fix stupid.
Had the same tires. Very soft tire may last 10k miles at best. You had to much tire pressure on one and the other not enough. You can tell by the wear one wore in the middle too much air and the other where the rim was due to car weight.
I don’t understand how this is an issue with the wheel and mounting? Please explain
Also...FYI...I got the Mopar rock guards and put on...look good and will save your paint and plastic molding at bottom of rocker panels
Soft compound. Nothing more nothing less. Super soft compound means great grip but low miles. On our race cars/street cars get 3 to 6 months on a super soft compound. Gotta pay if you wanna play.
You going mopar on the maintains on Saturday?
Did all that mishap take place as soon as you installed the wider tires, or how long did it take before you realize the error?
This in why in Europe we have a legal minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the entire tire if the company did what they have done to you in the UK they would be fined heavily.
Good video, The minute you said Goodyear, that's the problem. LOL...Same problem with Goodyear's I've owned.
Mine lasted 17,000 before I swapped them. They still had tread but were 3 years old and losing traction
@@pops55650
I've grown fond of the Falken Ziex and Azzenis tires. I may be a bit biased though.
Yea man how u not know this 275 is the widest tire u can put on a 9" wheel but glad nothing bad happened to u could have been worst
How wide are the stock rims on a 2014 SRT8 Charger?
Happy motoring!
that 275/40/20 my hellcat shreds that street tire like its nothing movin to a nitto drag tire now so it wont spin as bad
My 2019 came with 275 40 R-20 my rims are 20 x 9.5 I am buying 285s to replace them.
Maaaan why in the hell would you think a 9 inch wheel would work with a 305 tire???? Tf where you thinking
I believe I stated why if you watched the video. lol
Can you do 315's on a 10.5 wheel?
its not the tire size .......its the tire compound .......
To be fair, GY Eagle f1s do that with the stick size
Would 255/55/18s be ok for a 2006 dodge charger rt stock rim?
Super cool video. I went with the MT 275 40/20. I love em. And I hook and book
Vic Garcia hell yeah th 9"s work really well with certain 275s for sure! Good stuff! Hook and book!
J I would get 275 on the rear and 245 front
I literally have all season tires that turned into slicks within 1.5 months
Destroyer Grey Productions i do agree on that though lol a shop SHOULD NEVER squeeze a tire on a rim.
Maybe your girlfriend was doing massive burnouts withou you knowing lol just kidding
Um @Destroyer Grey Productions - You seem like a decent dude... You do understand soft tires (Especially Eagle F1's) and how long they will last. Has nothing to do with your tire size.
My challenger origional factory tire from good year only last for two summers
I have the same wheels you have how do the 274/40s fit on the front? Any rubbing? I'm getting mine next week.
Any update? I’m doing the same thing with the same wheel
@@CDalonzo 275/40s fit perfect all 4 corners. No rubbing at all.
The Chally? Lol. Dude buys wrong tire size then makes a public service announcement as if to enlighten us. No shit dude.
You're welcome! 💁♂️
Hahahahaha puts 305s on a 9in 245 safe rim, are you serious?! Roasted those expensive tires....
No it’s not safe it’s not right they never should’ve done that job 305-315 you have to have 10”-to 11 rim! Wow you guys got lucky!
Could someone help me. Will 275's fit on a stock 2014 SRT8? They will go on a 20x9.5 rim. Thanks
10 inch is perfect for 275 but a 275 will fit on a 9.5 just dont go 305 like I did lol
@@InnoV8Official Thanks a lot and I was wrong the rim is a 20x9.. Actually I was just looking at tires and can also go 265 45 20. Im just looking for anything wider than the stock 245s that will fit.
275's are for wheels 9" to 11" wide. the specs of the tire tell you.
what wheels are on her?
6 months is a lot mine don't last more then 3
Aye dude whats the best tire for the 9.5 20 inch rim
295
That’s how f1 do homie they came on my ss 1 le u get a good 10 k out of them but they grip hella good
305s? your gonna need at least 10s
Ideally 11's, the recommended size for my 11" rims is a 285 or 295, I got them to be able to properly fit 315's
So the moral of the story should be do your own research before buying something for your car. Every tire make/model has a specific recommended wheel width range stated by the manufacturer. Don't listen to other people that may know less than you do about a subject.
Nitto NT05s are the way to go

how wide is 275
275 millimeters or 10.82 inches
