    This is so sick. I remember a few months ago Valle was getting wrecked by some online (it was either XBL or PC, I forget which) Sagat for hours on stream, and he had kept telling people "no I'm not going to switch to Ryu, this is how you learn the matchup"... and now here you go! This matchup should be hard for Hugo, but this is a very good example of what practicing your bad matchups can do for you.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 9 років тому +68

      ESintu3 In part of that and reading players. Bonchan from all his performances in "mixed" competition (with a variety of different players and not just the japanese contingent he faces up against) has shown that if you get him on tilt, that he is prone to lose those games.

    Players aspiring to play grappler characters, take note of this match right here.
    The greatest secret of grapplers is that their command grabs are put to best use if you only use them rarely. They are best used when your opponent stops fearing/respecting them. The threat of them is easily as dangerous as the command grabs themselves. Until then, pokes, and footsies, and anti-airs will bring home the bacon.
    Hugo is 80% pokes and claps, 10% Moonsault Press, and 10% other stuff.
    Zangief is 80% pokes and green hands, 10% SPDs, and 10% other stuff.
    Watch top players for grappler characters (for Zangief, Snake Eyez is the one to watch, for Hugo, Valle is probably the best) and you will see this.

    • @danlorett2184
      @danlorett2184 7 років тому +90

      This is really true of most characters though: if your opponent isn't respecting one of your moves, then use it against them until they do. Bonchan was actually playing a great anti-grappler game this match, but Valle just didn't bother to go for grabs because he knew trying to play regular grappler against the best Sagat in the world is a losing proposition. Instead, he just uses his armor and range to pressure Bonchan, who is limiting his backdashes and staying at a good range to react to grabs, but a terrible range to deal with Hugo's normals and armor.
      Valle is also a player who doesn't really respect optimal play too much (ie he is not as predictable in his followups - he's fine with using technically "sub-optimal" followups and normals because it makes him extremely difficult to predict). Bonchan made the mistake of thinking that Valle wanting to play the grab game, when Valle was fine with just threatening grabs and pounding Bonchan with range, armor, and unpredictable timings and followups. It's only when Bonchan starts to fall apart in the last match that Valle even starts trying to go for grabs - you can tell he was waiting for the chance to use the ultra and Bonchan was just under too much pressure and decided to risk the jump out.
      Lesson learned: make sure you're not playing your enemy's game, and make sure you KNOW what their game plan is. Bonchan played Valle's game and didn't even take a round off of him.

    That match-up is 9-1 Sagat, and Valle wrecked arguably the best Sagat in the world. It's too bad that he didn't make it much farther in the tournament, but he also no longer plays full time. If Valle dedicated himself again to playing full time, I'm positive he would still be one of the most terrifying, threatening players in the game. The simply fact that he can win one of the worst match ups in the game against one of the worlds greatest players speaks for itself. Who knows, maybe SF5 will call Valle back into action and we'll see him taking top 8's once again. That would certainly be something to witness.

    This is probably the hardest match up in Street Fighter history against the best Sagat in the world.
    Valle showing tier lists aren't everything.

      tier lists are everything, valle had to play better than sagat because the matchup is awful, and on top of that play better than bonchan to win the set

    Bonchan, at the beginning of this game at least, looked like he was just gonna blow through this match and get an easy win. Mid way through, he looked alittle mad, but still confident. After the match, he looked alittle mad, but otherwise just kind of accepted what happened. Such a range of emotions in such a short time lol
