I think aside from the Repeater Handgun, the others are pretty well done. Other than the fact that Kruber reloads his muzzle-loading flintlock handgun in a couple of seconds, instead of fifteen :D Aside from that, GameSpot has an expert for cold weapons (blades, maces, that sort of thing). Maybe they could have their first video with both experts at once? Now there's a thought!
Aww man I wanted to see Jonathan react to the SVD with an entire longitudinal chunk missing from the handguard, or the S&W 686 with a AAA battery taped inside a corner of the grip that broke off. When I got into the insider sessions the first thing I noticed is that the default appearances for basically all the guns are heavily beaten on, rather than just worn.
Probably reflective of what videos I'm watching lately, but it took me three re-reads of this to realise that "AAA battery" did not, in this case, mean "Anti-Aircraft Artillery." :D Once I grokked that the image seemed much more plausible.
The state of the weapons in the game was probably originally done to reflect the fact that the factions in game were originally intended to be all antagonist factions from Tom Clancy games rather than the mix of all Ubisoft games that it is now.
@@PhoenixOfArcadia very likely but i like the way they're modelled. Makes them more unique, especially since we all saw thousands of pristine weapons in videogames by now.
I was recently wrapping my AR pistol grip with friction tape to cover the gap between the grip and the trigger guard (which is normal to accommodate the folding trigger guard but also does a number on my knuckles) and was thinking "Johnathon would be so disappointed"😂
I had to wrap up old wooden grips on competition pistols - the grips were too sharp they were harming the finger joints, to the point that I could not hold the gun. The tape helped a bit with the issue.
See I think that's one of the cases Johnathan would be fine with it, since you're doing it for a useability reason not just to arbitrarily make it cool.
Jonathan's totally fine with guns being modded for practical reasons, he just gets twitchy when it's done for tacticool reasons. So I reckon you'd be safe enough. Unless it was Hello Kitty tape, of course. Then he'd probably want to glare at you in a very disappointed way until you said sorry and promised never to do it again 😂
@@s.teamspark3858 hey, I'm cool with it. Ain't my style (I'm more of a Spongebob kinda guy) , but you do you. But Jonathan seems to have an aversion to anything either overly macho or overly cutesy on his firearms. 🤣
I know one of the guns in The Order 1886 is basically a completely unmodified Pedersen Rifle. Anyway, I really loved the look of that game. The again, I am a sucker for Steampunk and Dieselpunk.
I was at Fort Nelson just this week. The Falkland war exhibit they have on is very powerful and their collection is great. I could not get over the fact that one of the cannons that was used against the walls of Constantinople was just sat right there. Highly recommend.
I have to admit that it's kind of cool to see the action on the AK due to the missing top cover and it allows the developers to show that they have modeled and animated it. AK is the weapon of choice for this, since the top cover is not essential to the functioning of the weapon (at least in the short-term) and without it you can see quite a lot of the action while firing. some video games might model occasional malfunctions, but I have not seen an FPS, where cleaning dirt and doing regular maintenance are things that the player has to actually do. there is World of Guns: Gun Disassembly, but that's not a shooter. nevertheless the missing top cover might affect the mounting of sights and scopes. I was also thinking about iron sights, since I'm more familiar with the RK 95 TP, which does have the rear sight on the top cover, while the AK does not. at least the action is essentially the same on both, although we were obviously never allowed to fire it without the top cover, but you get the hang of how it works quite quickly, when you are learning to do maintenance.
Metro: Exodus has a gun cleaning mechanic. Also affects the accuracy and damage of the weapon in addition to causing malfunctions. It's introduced about when the more open world-y sandbox portions start to present themselves. Problem with gun maintenance though is that it doesn't always fully compliment the game mechanics that adds to the game experience. If it's a survival or sim type of game, that level of detail might be welcomed into the calculus of the game mechanics, since that's the kind of experience you are playing for, but most other games don't take this approach, so they leave it out. Also, this game uses the traditional Russian sight attachment system, which a rail attached to the side that cranes over the top. A lot of AKs or accessories either improve the fit of the top cover, or completely avoid using it for optics mounting. Only AK family rifle that completely reverses this is the SIG 55X series.
Would love to see America's Army. Was a game that I played for years in high school. And would be curious to see his impression on how they are used. Since it was supposed to be a recruitment tool for the US Army.
Jonathan's comment on the military-grade MP7 having supposed to be non-existent in the US irks me just a tiny bit, because, the US Naval Special Warfare Development Group, aka DEVGRU, aka Seal Team 6, does in fact use the MP7 IRL. To be fair, that is the only major US military group that actively uses the MP7 as far as I'm aware. Maybe since this game features the Echelon faction from Splinter Cell, and they use the MP7 in recent titles, *that* could be why it's in the US. IDK, maybe I'm reading too far into this.
One really neat feature in my opinion is that the prestige bronze, silver, and gold guns actually also come with "fixing" the gun, so your fancy gun also has none of the wear and tear of the base version.
Hope you can do more XDefiant, there's lots of gun models he still needs to see. In fact this series is the first thing I thought of when I first played the insider sessions last year 🙂
Never heard of this game, but it seems like it’ll be fun for the right audience. Still hoping for Valkyria Chronicles somewhere down the line. Love seeing Jonathan breaking down firearms like this.
It's made by a dude who worked on CoD (Original MW, MW2) and it does play like an older CoD title. It's just multiplayer only. Characters have special abilities and the characters are from other Ubisoft games : Echelon from Splinter Cell, DeadSec from Watch Dogs, Phantoms from Ghost Recon, Cleaners from The Dividion and Freedom Fighters from Far Cry 6. Though they have abilities they aren't super broken or anything. Also seems like they are trying to push teamwork and they are trying to keep things balanced. So of you liked the fast paced multiplayer of earlier CoD titles you will probably enjoy XDefiant. I enjoyed my time with the Beta. It's also Free 2 Play.
I would really enjoy seeing Jonathan break down the guns of Generation Zero. It has a lot of historic fierarms, mainly swedish with both more and lesser known guns.
This video just confirms a thing that I recognised with any Ubisoft game of the recent years - they don't care at all to represent weapons accurately. That's a bit sad, because it would mostly the same work to model the stuff just right.
Very hard to get the form and function of guns absolutely perfect without bringing in a subject expert to correct you or hands on experience. Though they clearly got alot right, just not absolutely everything.
Something not mentioned on the Kriss Vector is that the demo of the weapon firing shows the laser aiming at the ceiling and the shots somehow land on the wall in front
What ARE you talking about? The laser points up when the gun does, because it's being reloaded. When it's being fired, barrel and laser point forward, at the wall. That's how the shots hit the wall.
The P-90, I found it a little difficult to get a sight picture on it, the trigger was a bit stiff, but whence that thing got going it was smooth shooting.
4:16 one thing here for you: soldiers, especially ones with real combat experience (whom aren’t yet going crazy from ptsd) appreciate rubber bands, tape, and stuff that can be used to secure things to a surface. It’s like why the military leadership likes an AR platform for weapons, or why nato’s main combat rifle ammo is what it is. It’s useful for dozens of situations, not just what it was immediately designed for.
The mosin’s clip does actually eject up out of the way (or it’s intended to) when the stars align and the rimmed rounds actually feed in correctly from the clip, it will bounce right out of the way 👍🏼. I have one original Russian clip that will do this consistently.
Bungee cord on the buttstock is a tactile way to ensure consistent cheek weld. You get your cheek where you want it, bungee cord around that spot, then whenever you're taking aim in the future you just move your face up until you feel the cord and you know you have it where you want it.
I will say I'm impressed with the M44 reload a little bit. Every Mosin I've ever shot, shoving the rounds down into the magazine is annoying and finicky, and it often works way better if you tilt the top round slightly up and push on the bottom of the cartridge with your thumb, but games almost never do that. But they did here.
the sling mounting style of the Paracord on a p90 copies the "field expedient sling". Used by USMC, special forces ect. Often on the m16a1 and other ar style platforms
The only thing that really amazes me is that all of these guns are damaged and worn but the $30 red dot sight on top of most of them is in flawless condition despite their inability to actually survive being mounted on top of any of these guns.
Could you break down guns from DayZ? I think Jonathan would appreciate some realistic aspects such as bottle suppressors that actually break after a few shots and become useless. Guns can jam depending on their condition (you have to clean them ocasionally etc.) or if ammo in it is damaged. There plenty of guns currently after years of updates.
Re: the MP7 actually being accurately modelled. I noticed that all the guns in the video have their "real" names so Ubisoft probably paid for all the various licenses to allow them to legally model the guns accurately.
Mr. Ferguson trying his best to make a not-in-particularly interesting game much more so. Would love to see him cameo in a shooter as a Q-style gunsmith who gets more irate with the player as they modify & abuse their weapons in more & more outlandish ways.
It’s quite usual for games to have the wrong magazine on their 5.45mm Kalashnikovs, I imagine it’s because of how iconic the curvature of the 7.62 magazines is.
I own a 6.8 ACR and even though I like the round and l get to make it myself (thanks America) I would still prefer a 556 due to weight savings and customization (shorter barrel, suppressor comparability etc)

it could be interesting to see Jonathan Ferguson breaking down the guns of Phantom forces, I know it's a roblox game, so it's probably a huge fall in visual quality compared to other games, however there have been similarly visually simple games on the channel and there are over 100 guns in phantom forces, and there some interesting attachments too such as the amt terminator and "homemade sight"
Some of the weapons he handles are literally centuries old, things like oil that naturally occurs in your skin can damage old pieces of wood so I think they just do it for all guns regardless of age or material. It's not for HIS safety, its for the safety of the historic pieces. :)
Alright, how about Johnathan Ferguson, The Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at The Royal Armouries Museum to breakdown the firearms in The Order 1886. Please.
Jonathan should review the guns in bloodhunt (vampire masquerade bloodhunt), they have an interesting take on non licensed variants plus a few unique designs, also he's a big vampire fan i think.
A lot of these decisions by devs are usually creative choices/redesigns to avoid legal issues. Although I'm sure it happens that reference is limited and mistakes can be made. But a lot of the time these redesigns are intentionally done to stray from the original look of the weapon since copying 1:1 can give the weapons manufacturers an excuse to take legal action.
my theory on why CoD have changed their weapons designs and names is to distance themselves from real world shootings, its been blamed for them before so they're probably just trying to dodge blame.
Does that mean that the acr from xdefiant is a black and tan? Can you use it to show your wife how you won medals down in Flanders? (tell me i'm not the only one who thought about this)
I live fairly close to Leeds. Been to the Royal Armouries a few times. The firearms section is very small and tucked out of the way and seems to follow a very UK centric 'guns are bad' narrative.
Jonathan I have already tweeted at the developer to fix the modeling on the RPK mag. No response smh first RPK 74 I’ve seen in a game but they have a AK-47 7.62 mag on it 😢😢😢

Battlebits dev too, the artist (i assume, cuz only 3 devs) posted a reaction video and kept saying "good to know, consider it fixed"
I love it when the devs be like "Ayy, free advice from an Expert, we will patch this"
A lot of these decisions by devs are usually creative choices/redesigns to avoid legal issues. Although I'm sure it happens that reference is limited and mistakes can be made. But a lot of the time these redesigns are intentionally done to stray from the original look of the weapon since copying 1:1 can give the weapons manufacturers an excuse to take legal action.
14:30 Calling out the 'Gigga Chad Mosin' and 'Cursed Obrez Pistol' reviews on Garand Thumb.
my theory on why CoD have changed their weapons designs and names is to distance themselves from real world shootings, its been blamed for them before so they're probably just trying to dodge blame.
Does that mean that the acr from xdefiant is a black and tan? Can you use it to show your wife how you won medals down in Flanders?
(tell me i'm not the only one who thought about this)
Please have him cover the weapons from COD AW
I live fairly close to Leeds.
Been to the Royal Armouries a few times.
The firearms section is very small and tucked out of the way and seems to follow a very UK centric 'guns are bad' narrative.
Jonathan I have already tweeted at the developer to fix the modeling on the RPK mag. No response smh first RPK 74 I’ve seen in a game but they have a AK-47 7.62 mag on it 😢😢😢
Jonathan should take a look at World of guns
