  • A comparison of three different modern, full-frame lenses from three very different price points. Shot on an Arri Alexa Mini LF in Open Gate 4.3K color color corrected in Rec. 709. I plan to add a couple of more scenes in the near future.

    Thanks for the test! Cooke stays true to its non clinical, character-full formula. Not something I'm not already used to seeing with my vintage Zeiss - halation flares and shadow rendition look on par, maybe 2-5% cleaner and better mechanics. They all look good and whichever you choose is a matter of taste and story.

    The difference between the Cooke and the others is startling. And tell your model she looks like a young Patti Smith!

    Thanks for the great test! Do you think it would be possible, to grab highres frames and upload them online somewhere? I'd like to compare them without youtube compression in a higher quality.

      Hi Oli. I'm adding a link in the UA-cam description to full-resolution TIFFs but I guess my account needs more UA-cam-style scrutiny so it may not show up for a day or two while they verify me. You can also find the video with the stills link on Vimeo - I think I used the same title.

    Thanks for sharing the tiff images. I find it really stage that the wider Dulens lenses show a shift from green - magenta when stopping down as do the Tokina and Cookes to a lesser extent. And the Cooke 75mm seems to act in an opposite fashion. That is something I have never noticed a lens doing. Could it be for any other reason like the ND filter being used to control exposure? Or did the skin tones sit at a different position in terms of IRE level and the levels where made uniform in post? I'm looking at the portrait files.

      Hi - I would not put too much stock in subtle color shifts because while I tried to take care in shooting and leveling shots accurately in the grade small hue shifts could be an error on my part. I created the exposures using a mix of the Arri Mini LF internal ND's, Tokina Full Spectrum ND's and camera shutter angle. This mix of ND's and my efforts to remove their influence could leave some really subtle traces behind like those you are describing. I've used the all of these lenses extensively on shoots and have usually traced any hue shifts to ND's. The Dulens Mini Primes have good color matching across the set.

      Thanks that’s interesting to know. Clearly a lot of work went into the test.

    Maybe with Tokina you don’t have to turn down sharpness or at least by much anyways ❤

      Thanks so much for clarifying! Very surprising for the price range. I've been saving for the whole set :)

    is it me or is the focus breathing better on the tokina than the cooke starting from 10:16

    • @munnyp
      @munnyp  8 місяців тому +5

      You are 100% correct. Not everyone is bothered by focus breathing but for me personally I think the best lenses exhibit almost none. That's why I added the Master Prime for reference to the focus breathing section - the Tokina Vistas are pretty fantastic lenses. While the Cooke S8's are certainly good looking (and expensive) lenses I think most people are surprised to see them breath the amount that they do.

    was that a colour shift on 31 dulens from 2.8 to 4?

    • @kevin2028
      @kevin2028 3 місяці тому

      I didn't see that, but a massive green color shift on the Cooke s8 from 28. to 4. Maybe my eyes are ticking me.

    Yes, but the price difference between the Dulens and Cookes

    • @munnyp
      @munnyp  8 місяців тому +4

      That's not the only difference between them! The Dulens really can create a pleasing picture and are very affordable. I chose to look at these three lens sets because they each occupy very different price points. The Tokinas and Cookes do offer very close matching of their Look across the respective sets at T1.4 and T1.5. I have shot a number of commercials on all of these lenses and keep going back to the Dulens (shooting between T2.4 and 2.8)

      @@munnyp What is making you go back? Am seriously surprised by how the dulens are looking here...definitely super impressive for their price. I would really want to see them vs zeiss cp2/3 which is kinda my preferences but no one did that here.

  • @easiersaidthandone-showbus7510

    No surprises here
