    Thank you to the lovely member on the hamster hideout forum for creating an in-depth topic on why it’s advised to not house dwarf hamsters together, if you would like to read more in detail about it here is the link: hamsterhideout.com/forum/topic/127705-housing-multiple-hamsters-why-its-inadvisable/
    I would also like the share this german website that talks about housing pairs together and why it’s unnatural if you scroll down to the “can hamsters be kept in groups?” the website will need to be translated but it is very interesting to read! translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=auto&sp=nmt4&tl=en&u=diebrain.de/zw-verhalten.html&xid=17259,15700022,15700186,15700191,15700253,15700256,15700259&usg=ALkJrhgF02AFr2_uS0piSoPECSndLonswA#gruppen

      I read from a german website too when I was looking for info. Here in Sweden theres actually a law that says you have to house them in pairs, which is so stupid since it rarely seems to work. 🙄

    • @Lili-cc7pz
      @Lili-cc7pz 5 років тому

      Denise K wow That is an interesting law! As an experienced hamster mom, pairs do work but it must require a lot of research and attentiveness for it to work. If you throw two random hamsters together in a cage, it’s not going to be great.

      This is my first time owning a dwarf hamster and I have a critter trail two-story cage and one-story cage connected to it and I recently bought another female dwarf hamster for my other female and the new one doesn’t seem to like my original one,I am planning to make the cages bigger with more room to run around, I don’t want anything to happen to my original hamster she is smaller than the new one the new one is already full grown. I need help with what to do and to keep them in the same cages or separate them.

      Ur gurl Holly super easy upgrade.
      Get a 3 stack sterilite plastic tub drawer set. You’ll have to use a torche to melt te drawer holes, but you can hot glue tubes in and cardboard ladders and attach a critter trail Cage to the top. My winter white/DJ dwarf hamster digs it, I’ll post a video tomorrow to show his cage I made, I have parts to build and sell an almost identical one.

      Hi I know you probably won't answer but I am thinking of getting a winter white tomorrow. Do you know if they are more of a calmer breed? Or anything of the sort?

    • @gingeeta_creecha3401
      @gingeeta_creecha3401 4 роки тому +4

      vanilla bean 666 I’ve personally found. The male winter whites pretty laid back, they definitely each have their own quirks and personalities. Male winter whites smell like buttered popcorn... in my opinion. Lol. I have a male now, Chungus, he’s hilarious. He grabs fingers in his mouth with his teeth but never bites them, like playing with a soft mouth dog gnawing your hand.
      This being said I also had a female Campbell’s dwarf that had an extremely personable attention seeking personality. She loved to play with me by chasing my fingers and attacking them with playful nibbles and squeaks, and letting me chase her with my fingers and tickle her belly. Her name was Pookie.
      But I’ve also had a couple very mean hamsters from both sub-species.
      Do t just pick the first one you see, wait on them a few weeks till there’s one you can get a good vibe with in the store, pure your hand in the tanks and see how they are. You’ll know whose a good candidate, someone who isn’t too aggressive and not too scared. Keep in mind, they come from a mass produced hamster mill, where genetics aren’t that great, losts of issues are possible with any of them.
      I had a male black with wjite feet Campbell and for 6 months I tried everything to tame him and it was a farce. He refused and would attack any moving thing,
      I got a video up of Chungus playing with a tube toy, he’s a winger white and almost a Year old. Very nice boy 👍

At first I was wanting a row of but I've been honestly staying up for 2 whole nights doing all the research I can and most people said they aren't the type that I would want. I want one that will kinda chill with me or lay in my hand or on me when I'm sitting or watching TV or something but also I want it to be energetic and fun but not very aggressive but I probably won't find one like that

      vanilla bean 666 you might want to look into adopting a Rat then. They need more space and attention, but make incredibly living and interactive pets, they wanna know what you’re doing and get your attention. A pair of boys would make great lap buddies.

    I used to be pro cohabitation until I started rescuing more pairs- and now I am totally against it. Because I’ve learned the littlest things can make them fight even if they’re used to eachother. Males can never be housed together and even with females there’s still a big risk- I’ve always had to separate even with a 1000+ sq in cage and multiple everything. One of the rescue pairs - my first one, got along just fine together for over a year. No fighting, the occasional play fighting which is completely normal, slept together and everything and one night after work I came home to the ones nose hanging off. Sometimes there are no prior signs. I’ve also learned it’s best to not have any one whole hides ( or to have hides with two exits ) because they can feels threatened. Its a lot of work and risk that isn’t needed 🤷🏼‍♀️

      Dizu Roodog not together right? 😅. And yeah- I feel a lot of people’s dream is to have a group of small animals ( such as hamsters ) since they each need a large cage and well lets be honest that would be so great if they could live together. But I feel now as people get more and more dwarf pairs they realize how it really is.

    • @Annie-oo4yk
      @Annie-oo4yk 5 років тому +2

      Shay Rose My hamsters get along well, they clean each other and sleep together, they chase each other around the cage, they are doing fine

    • @shayrose7705
      @shayrose7705 5 років тому +3

      Dizu Roodog okaY.... but just to be clear literally everyone who has had a pair will say that, then the day comes when they do fight. I’ve had some who were super bonded and adored eachother and do everything you’ve listed until one day I came home and the ones nose was hanging off. No prior warning. Especially if they are males. The only successful pairs I’ve ever seen were females.
      Your males WILL end up fighting. I work in a small petshop and trust me all male pairs will eventually fight. This goes for almost every species. We had a pair surrendered to us that were a year old and did fine for a few months and they were about a year and a half and we came in to the one attacked and dead one day. That was with all precautions, two great size wheels, multiple hides with two holes, lots of bedding, two water bottles and two food dishes.
      I won’t be rude about it but everyone who has a pair claims they’re fine and will be extremely naive, just like yours are fine now, but trust me especially being males they will end up fighting. You can take this information and choose to either tell yourself they will be fine because they are now or you can choose to be safe than sorry and split them and not come home to a bloody hamster or two bloody hamsters one day.

    I am one of those rare experienced hamster owners who can actually pull off having a pair. Like you I would not advise anyone else to try it and less they had been keeping hamsters for like at least a decade. As always you know what you’re talking about, I’m just glad that my tango and Cash are still getting along and everything‘s fine but then again their enclosure is large enough there are two of everything and they came from the same litter! And I’ve got a perfectly appropriate cage to separate them into if I have to. Preparation is the key to being a good pet parent❤️

    Love this! And especially the lil mustaches and bows on the male and female hammies😍 Something that I'd like to add: there are quite a few people that I know that keep dwarf hamsters together here in Germany, and I talked to them a bit about the care and what you need to look out for. They said to make sure that the cage is big (at least our minimum (100x50) but not too much bigger because it will allow the hamsters to make territories and fight.
    We also only keep Campbells in groups here, mainly because it's super hard to find a certified winter white breeder to make sure they are pure bred :) But keeping dwarfs together is only for very experienced hamster owners, and I wouldn't do it

      Thank you! I'm glad someone appreciates the little details! I have noticed that, but one of my issues with it is that, if hamsters were actually social animals don't you think it would not matter how much space you gave them? I think that the fact that you have to give them a smaller enclosure just so they won't end up creating a territory and fighting just shows they really are more so solitary. It definitely is an interesting topic!

    As a mom with two Campbell’s living together, my boys live very well together and I’ve had no problems, even now at the 7months mark.
    But I do not recommend multiple hamsters for beginners. You really need to be attentive to your hamster’s personality and relationships when you house them together.
    You don’t always need two of every thing (water bottles for example, and nests.. when hamsters get along they tend to sleep together for warmth, but this will depend on your hamster’s behaviour and personality) HOWEVER you do need two wheels for sure, and always get two of everything if you’re not sure how your hamsters are going to react. This all depends on your hamsters and the rule is to KNOW your hamsters and be attentive. If fights break out ALWAYS be ready to separate them forever.
    Some hamsters, even dwarves, just don’t get along. Those should not be housed together. In the end it’s all dependent on your hamsters, who are each unique.
    TLDR: dwarfs CAN be housed together in peace IF you are very attentive and the hamsters get along. Key requirement is same gender litter mates who have never been separated from birth, even for a few hours.

    • @v1v1xn
      @v1v1xn 3 роки тому +1

      @Iuvryujin no not really, the most they've gone is some squeaks and that's all, no bites no wounds! usually hamsters fight for dominance, but their cage is big so they have their own areas, hence they don't fight :)

    I just got my first pair of winter whites, I have had 3 solitary hamsters so far including a winter white. I was thinking about separating them on their first night(they seemed to ignore each other a little bit). Now this morning they built a burrow together. And they always want the same wheel. They try to run in different directions though so their butts keep bumping🥰

    If you really want two hamsters, it’s probably because they are cute to watch and interact with each other. If this is why, then i would recommend mice as pets instead. They are way more social if you get a group of females, and love to snuggle together which is cute to watch and much safer than a group of hamsters.

    Even when you have a successful pair if one dies the other one can just about die of a broken heart. I had a pair and they were very sweet and the one developed a health issue and died. It took me a long time to get the dead body away because she wouldn’t stop cuddling her. After that it look me a long time to get her to eat regularly again and she was just never the same, big chunks of depression, especially in her cage and she kinda just gave up on life at one point, just never got over it. Happens with horses too, there have been cases where they have had to put horses down because one dies and the other gives up on living without them.

    I am a huge fan of your channel! I have taken all of your advice and my two Russian hamsters sisters are very grateful! I have had them a little over a month and Im still going thru the taming process. And additional tips? They still seem nervous about going onto my hand. When I purchased the sisters the pet owner told me they can be housed together. 😒 I've only witnessed a few squabs between them. But after seeing your videos, I constructed another large DIY bin cage and separated the sisters. April and May are now very happy in their own enclosures and only interact during taming sessions/ playtime. I wish more pet owners where as kind to animals like you. I always look forward to your videos! Thank you so much from a new hamster lover!

In the wild the live together for safety and reproduction as you stated, as they feel safe in numbers as some will be on the 'lookout' while others... do other things... xD

My hamsters looked like they liked each other and after a while one ended up dead. 😭 and the girl who gave me the hamsters had her hamsters together and never had issues.
