- A missed the halftime show at the Super Bowl this year and wanted to see if the H.E.R. solo was good and if H.E.R. played the super bowl solo or if it was like a guitar lip synch type thing. Let's have a look!

Just because people are trying to verify if she played live or not does NOT mean it’s an attack. He didn’t say she is a terrible human being with no talent and she can’t play at all!! He is just weighing in if he can tell she played LIVE. People are so dramatic.
Thank you! I even complimented what she wrote and the quality of the solo. There was no question in my mind whether she is the musician who did it. I just wondered if it was a plugged in performance.
Ask yourself this, if this musician was a white man in a rock band would anybody be questioning her ability to play guitar?

People need to know that most live performances are on a delay, especially the Super Bowl since the Janet Jackson controversy.
This performance felt out of sync at times. It is quite possible that she is playing along with a solo that she had recorded previously.
She is an amazing musician, though. I'd start by listening to her live performance of "Hold On" with Chris Stapleton.

It certainly sounded improvised in some parts compared to the album version
I was curious why she didn’t use her wa wa bar…I think she can play. Often large productions with millions on the line, they have a prerecording in the background just in case a feed gets blown.

Super Bowl requires all performances to be pre-recorded. I’m pretty sure this applies to musical instruments as well.

@@FinsFan70 If memory serves, 2014 Red Hot Chili Peppers said the NFL required all sound to be pre-recorded, except for vocals. I'm guessing Prince was an exception.
Oh, absolutely he was the exception he wasn't gonna do it. That was the Bottom line that he told them if I cannot play my music live. And I will not do it. I don't blame him. I wouldn't want to fake something no matter if I wrote it or not.
Yes she can play. In this instance she was not. To me, it's a kick in the face to her fans. Treating them like idiots. She did have a choice, she didn't have to do the gig.

At the request of the NFL, Super Bowl performances (anthems and half-time shows) have been pre-recorded since the early 90s. Some performers have even made a joke of it. (Red Hot Chili Peppers didn't even have their instruments plugged in for their performance with Bruno Mars). With a performance like this, there is no time to do a pre-show line check and makes sure everything is working and sounding right...this is the NFL's way of making sure there are no unnecessary glitches that would ruin the show. Generally, vocal mics are the only thing that are live, and sometimes not even that.
TLDR; she didn't play it live, but she did record it prior to the show....so she can play it.
Yeah I was definitely watching and realizing she could play it for sure. I don't know where material otherwise and went checked out and so how talented she is. I like what she wrote here.
She did not write it. It is a part of usher’s “U got it bad” original song. She can play it, but it is not her original music
@@Thefuentesco true, she didn't write the entirety of the solo, but she added a lot more than what was in the original song. My point is that she actually did record the solo prior to the SB, then, per NFL requirements, she "mimed" the solo during the performance.

@reidjames2938 since doing this video, I learned that he was the last one that got to do that.
According to Rick Beato, who has a friend that runs sound for these types of events, the stadium is huge and the logistics are such that they pre-record the musical acts. Which means they perform the show live so it can be recorded, then the audio is played back so they can lip sync to the tracks. That's not to say they didn't actually play the songs and sing them. She's obviously a talented player. I think the majority of halftime shows are lip synced to a track.

What is not being taken into account is that this is a large arena and the sound is lagging behind because of the distance of the stadium microphones from the stage add on top the acoustics of the stadium so this is why it seems she isn’t in synch.
She didn't play live. She can play guitar though.
She must do this often , when you watch her play purple rain solo live on one of the full bends she messes up the sync and only does a quarter bend a half second later after the sound of the full bend.
Watch her performance with chris Stapleton at the Cma absolutely wonderful they played off of each other. it was beautiful to watch

Most of that solo is from the original recording from 2001. She probably recorded her version of it ahead of time and faked it live.

Because of my daughter, I actually ended up watching the Super Bowl this year (haven't watched it literally for decades) and when she came out with that guitar solo, my first reaction was to see if she was actually playing, and I came to the same conclusion you did. No doubt she can play, but I'm pretty sure she was "mime-ing" the performance. Ain't nothing wrong with that! Keep rockin' my brother!

it sucks she didn’t play live because she’s a great player, but there’s way too much chaos before the show and not enough time to sound check so this was pretty much bound to happen

How do you know she can shred? Does she do it somewhere not show at the Superbowl? The solo she did at the Superbowl is so far from shredding that there's absolutely no rational connection between the two.

Definitely a legit artist. Real name is Gabby (Gabriella Wilson). She's been singing and playing since she was 10 or so. There's a clip of her on the Today show back in 2007, before she was famous albiet playing the piano, but still showing she has true musicianship. Potentially the SB was pre-recorded though to your point, but over her own music nonetheless. ❤

If you watch the full show it become blatantly obvious why the people setting up that stage would not want a live guitar on there. Plugged in would be a tripping hazard, wireless would be an interference/feedback nightmare. They most likely gave her an ultimatum, either mime your solo or stand in the back of the "pit" with the other musicians.
Since posting this video I have spoken to some people involved in the production and got all kinds of information about how they have to run the show on an exact second per second schedule it requires the use of backing tracks. It all made sense hearing a description of how they do things.
No need for an analysis video to see that this was pre-recorded. Almost everything at the Super Bowl halftime show is pre-recorded. This doesn't question that she does actually play very well, she just made the choice to mimic to be able to get the visibility this show gives. This went well for some, not so well for others...
Why is this even a question? Honestly, as if this Super Bowl didn't have enough "conspiracy" theories associated with it.

No, she wasn't it was recorded. Still, it doesn't mean she didn't create it. Prince wouldn't have played the halftime show if he had to be prerecorded and play along and fake it.

Honestly, being a fan of the guitar greats and watching live music consistently, she played over a track but that's ok, it's the Super Bowl. Good R and B musician that is very talented, but a guitar god elite? No.
so you're wondering if the super bowl sets up a stage, backline, PA, mics and gets sounds all in 10 minutes for a live performance that gets broadcast around the world hoping there's no problems? ok

No one plays live at the super bowl, and it's been this way for decades. Like it or not it's the super bowl, not the artists, who make the decision for artists to play on stage but then pipe in a previously recorded take during the show. This is because the venue doesn't want any technical difficulties that could potentially derail a multi-billion dollar event. So if you want to be mad or criticize someone, it's the people who run the super bowl; not this guitar player who it's out there working - even if you can't hear what she's playing.
Btw, does anyone remember Whitney Houston and her super bowl performance (and the drama associated with it) in '91? It's like we've already done this before yet people are acting like it's the first time... why? Just accept that in a world that is motivated by $$$ this is what you get. Oh, and stand by for what's coming in the next few decades with "AI" and how that's going to seep into these industries. If you think using technology from the 1970's is bad, yes they were doing it back then even at concerts, wait until 2030's tech hits. It wont even be people or "music" made by people.
I saw Led Zeppelin and Heart at Madison Square Garden in 76, along with many other greats. Just pure raw loud rock and roll. No computers or lip sync. Piles of Marshall amps that actually had instruments plugged into them. I respect a band more that may occasionally miss a note than fake perfection
people fake it live. I can tell from her fingering that she is only playing to a track. she wrote the solo and recorded it. then faked playing it live. Some singers fake sing live. some fake guitar live

She clearly is able to play it (even if it took a few takes in the studio). Most musicians who play to tracks like this are just doing it with the advice of management, but it’s not a great artistic choice, at least for my ears as a listener. Practice more, learn how to improvise your way out of mistakes, and it will connect so much more with the audience than miming.
From what I'm seeing from all the comments here, they don't give you a choice at the super bowl. You have to play along rather than be live.

It's pre-recorded. The NFL doesn't allow for instruments to be used anymore. She should have turned it down because if all she was going to do was play then she should have been allowed to play. Since the NFL didn't allow her to play that's on both sides. Metallica has been asked to do the half time show but they were told no more instruments and they refuse to fake play. The fact that she thought fake playing was good. Is what actually makes this bad. Guitar tech exist for a reason the NFL just sucks now.

Girl guitar players are dismissed and underencouraged from early ages . Been watching it happen for the last 60 years. MANY if not most, artists use tracks for the Super Bowl show. But a woman playing guirar will get slammed more than usual. People are comparing her to Prince (😂), as if that is easily accomplished by anyone! Low hanging fruit for everyones fodder....

This is a slap in her face, she’s a very talented musician. She plays piano, drums , electric guitar, acoustic guitar and the bass guitar.
I don't think miming a solo she wrote at a performance like this is a "slap in the face?" I'm acknowledging that she can play and that she wrote a cool solo.
For a lot of people, this is a racial thing. They're seeing it as a white man trying to tear down a black woman and being skeptical about the possibility that a black person, and especially a woman, could be really good at something not normally considered their domain (in their minds).
I'm only mentioning this to explain the intensity of the reaction you're getting. I'm more inclined to take it at face value and assume you'd be saying the same things if it had been a white man, like say post malone, doing the performance.

That's correct. If it was any guitar player at the super bowl and it came up, I would have done a video on it. This was the guitar part in the super bowl. I'm not really qualified to talk about other stuff.

I've had to mimic my own parts for videos because I like to record them without the pressure of getting a good video take. Then I have to go back and mimic it if I want to do a video. I think a lot of music just do that.

It's a half time entertainment show. It has a fixed start time. Fixed run time. They have to allow exactly the right number of TV commercials.
Plenty of performers are tight... but not that tight. They want to de-risk as much as possible. So there are backing tracks for everything except the absolute essentials... which may or may not include the superstar's microphone.

Super Bowl hasn’t allowed live playing since Prince for safety reasons. The artists are paid, let alone insured.

Whether she played it or faked it, it's an incredibly mediocre, generic solo that is completely void of anything impressive, noteworthy, innovative, advanced, or interesting. It was a junior-high talent show solo. Frankly, it was so bad and hokey that I actually laughed.
