I'm glad I stayed till the end of the video to hear Rick's point about the decentralization of music... Incredibly astute!
One thing ive noticed is people don't listen to music together anymore. Rarely do i hear music blasting from a house or from cars. Young people don't share music either. Its like they feel insulted if someone suggests a song to them.
Its the ear buds and the internet changing everything.
@@williambarry8015 Add the fact that many young adults rarely even hear " a song" they just know the parts that go on the TikTok Reels. Its a different world. Sad for us that love music but this conversation is really irrelevant to them.
@@williambarry8015 That's something I hadn't thought about but its true. I live near a high school and I see kids with the earbuds in or headphones listening to whatever they're listening to, while 30 years ago when I was in high school my friend group would all be piled into the car(since only 1 of us had a car) jamming to a mix tape or whatever. I got turned on to so many artists because of that.

I really have no desire to listen to the same music everyone else is listening to. I really don't get the warm and fuzzies over seeing some mid artist playing the same intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus thing and everyone being in on it. I'm glad the record industry and hollywood died and artists having to actually do work and perform shows. There's still big stars but we don't have huge international sensations. There's still festivals - there's still plenty of money being made.
As a drummer, definitely respected the fact that they left an empty drumset on stage. RIP Aaron Spears

Prince singing Purple Rain - in the rain - and U2 doing a 9/11 tribute in 2002. Those were the greatest Super Bowl halftime performances ever.

@@Laze-Mz Just about to say, the very first artist to perform at the Super Bowl was Michael Jackson. I still remember watching and the build up to him coming on stage. He popped up from beneath the stage and stood there like a statue for what seemed like 15 minutes. It was crazy.

Alicia was definitely live. Ain't no way they pre recorded that first note and were like "yep, let's broadcast that"
Was it just me or did her voice crack a couple times? I might have to go watch it again.
Edit: I watched it again on UA-cam and I heard no voice cracking. In fact, the mixing sounded superb to what I heard live.

I heard that they used canned audio for the replays of Alicia Keys to mask that voice crack.

Im a Drum Major for The Sonic Boom of The South Marching Band (Jackson State University), and Usher and ALL of the artists were definitely singing LIVE!
We had inner ears so that we could hear the tracks, and we could hear every single thing that they were doing. Usher sang live AND danced simultaneously!!

You can say that all you want, but they definitely weren't, it's just not how broadcasts like are done. As Rick said.
Sometimes what they do is record a live vocal from the rehearsals. That way it sounds live "at the time" but it's pre-recorded so there is no issue with mics / transmitters etc. Why the girl playing guitar solo was also miming.
Usher was singing at the beginning, 100% confirmed. You can tell his vocal levels were very "live" and dipped down a little bit. Massive props to even try in that setting.
I thought that too, but you can achieve that by simply recording it performed at a rehearsal.
They can do blended tracks now that mix in a bit of live to make it seem like the whole thing is live. It's what Taylor swift does with her solo guitar song she does sing 1 live at each show to make it seem like they're all live when it's not
He got a tad breathless, commensurate with how much he was moving. Looked live to me.

@@zachleary108 Taylor sings a fair bit live, but the backing tracks are so smooth you can't tell when she's not. She also uses live AutoTune pretty heavily, depending on the song of course. No need for AutoTune on an acoustic country song.
I was in marching band [trumpet] (I know...one time, at band camp), and one of the key problems we had when the band was spread out was trying to keep in time because the distance between the instruments was such that there would be a millisecond delay between the far sides of the formation when listening. As a result, we learned to ignore what we were hearing, and instead follow the drum major's hand to keep time - which we could see via the speed of light effectively simultaneously to everyone in the formation. Thus, to a person listening in the stands it would have a consistent timing across all the instruments from one side to the other. Inside the formation, it always sounded off, due to the delay caused by the speed of sound. The point is, live performance at the super bowl must be insane, and have similar problems due to the sound system being spread out across the whole stadium. If usher was singing live, he must have had a monitor of the live sound to keep time to, of course he's a pro so has had experience with this.
In high school in the late 70s my high school marching band played the halftime show at Giants stadium. We also did the anthem with a singer, and because her signing was fed through the PA it really, really required watching the conductor. If the singer tries to jazz it up, would have been a mess, but she understood and was careful.
It is why most of the performances are backing tapes and lip synched, besides the fact some of the stars can't sing.
I've played trumpet solos in the Astrodome and the Alamodome, and in those places you also get the top-to-bottom echo, as well as side-to-side phasing problems. And NO, I've NEVER used a microphone ON THE FIELD!!!! Back then, we learned to PROJECT and use our AIR, properly - which is a lost art these days. And no, rock stars and session cats have NO IDEA how to do that. Fleetwood Mac learned about some of this stuff when they did Tusk, and Mick was fascinated by it. Great Arena Rock and totally-acoustic field performances with sonic power you could feel in your chest were eras of musical glory, when musicians strode like gods before throngs of adulation that shall never pass this way again. Keep the faith, Brother! In another 50 years, there won't be anyone left on the planet who ever experienced that firsthand.
True a marching band has that problem but In -Ear monitors basically corrects that problem for small acts.
@@michaelblaney4461 I hate in-ear monitors for brass playing. Kills my inspiration, among other negative effects. I still prefer a wedge on the stage. In the studio, I'll throw one can off, as needed.
Serious question for you: why are the drum major's (and/or conductor's) hands always so wildly off beat and erratic? Why don't I ever see them moving/stopping their hands on beat like a normal person/musician would?
I think it was cool that Usher put Aaron Spears' drumset (his former touring drummer that recently passed) on the stage as a little tribute.

I feel like the Foo Fighters could do a great halftime show. Even if people don't know the band they've definitely heard a Foo Fighters song. They also have a very energetic stage presence.
And no one would have to worry about foo disrupting the second half of the game

troubledyouth3 - I was thinking the same thing. As for can any rock band put on a great half time show? In November, Green Day did the half time show for the Grey Cup in Canada, and it was by far better than any of the Super Bowl Half Time shows I've seen in the past decade.
Add me to the list of people who came here to say exactly the same. The Foos could do it.
But I can't think of anyone else.
I went to the Super Bowl that had Rolling Stones as the halftime show. Epic! They were great. As they were carting Mic Jagger off the field, he had a handheld video recorder and was personally recording the crowd as he rolled out. He didn’t have someone else record him, he recorded us. Magical!
I see so many comments regarding to the favorite artists or talented musicians people want to see on halftime, but maybe the missing point is the drive, that energy that moves a stadium, that feel that keeps the crowd hypnotized right through the end - I know that lights, dance and special effects are a part of the show - but, at the end of the day, it's all about the song. If there is no hit, it's very difficult, specially because social media and the internet makes people see and feel the world with immediacy and impatience. I think that there are just a few artists and bands that could handle it, and I agree with you Rick, pointing that a long-lived career really counts. Long live to your channel and to the old but gold music that saves us!
I will say, the fact that Bruno Mars had such a fantastic halftime show with only 2 albums back in 2014 is amazing.
As a non-Bruno fan, I agree. He has excellent stage presence.
That was an fantastic half time show!
But to Beato's point, it wasn't Bruno alone. He shared the show with Coldplay and Beyonce. A new artist with 'heritage' artists.
"GREAT" half time show, yes first thought was Bruno Mars, but part of the reason he's a great on stage presence. Actually some of the artist today should do well produced covers, or songs everyone knows

exactly, I feel like they put on these OK pop artists that have a string of hits but not much more in terms of excitement..Usher is not a horrible singer , but they were referring to him as a legend. I'm sorry but hes not Marvin Gaye..? Prince or even Bruno Mars which I don't like but respect for his musicianship.

Foo Fighters with some pyro. Queen and Adam Lambert have a lot of rock anthems and put on an incredible show.
Adam Lambert is not a rock and roll singer. He's a guy that should be on Broadway singing show tunes. By the way, I've seen Queen 4 times two times with Lambert, once with Paul Rodgers and in 1979, Freddie Mercury
Yeah, Foo Fighters might be one of the last modern rock bands still going. I think the pyro is over rated. People can still enjoy a good rock band without the dancing and fireworks. I think they'll stick with hop hop artists though in the future for now "to be safe"

Spot on analysis. Over the years I've hung on to & added to my books, vinyl, CDs, & DVDs. I treasure my library. Years ago I would tell my younger coworkers that they would read, view, & listen to what was available on the internet.....they would enjoy their convenience & not miss a beat.
Paul McCartney played the half time for Super Bowl 39 in 2005. He was backed up by a band on stage, complete with drums, other guitarists and a keyboard player. Paul was playing his Hofner bass and singing. Great show and great sound engineering. It appears to be a live performance and can be viewed on UA-cam. In their prime, Grand Funk Railroad would have put on a great, live show.

grand funk...legendary. unfortunately half time shows started long after they stopped but yes...great jam band with lots of hits.
The way I understand it, and I watched a documentary on it last year, is that the whole show is taped, in the event there’s an electrical or audio glitch. So that even if those on the stadium were not able to watch the show, it would still be able to go out on tv, because the show is ultimately aimed at the tv audience. However, they only use the taped bits when necessary and that parts of it are live.
There are some parts that are live even with the band, which is Adam Blackstones band, and they all the big shows, the Grammys, Oscars etc. In 2021, when they had Dr Dre and his stable of singers, the band also featured as drummer Anderson Paak, and I believe he wasn’t miming all of it. So too, the elite hip hop guitarist, Freaky Rob Gueringer.
As many have said, all i could think about was how great Prince was with his halftime show. He could be standing there by himself and it'd grab people's complete and undivided attention. Miss him.

Rick, you are SO right about how "new" artists will not have the same reach like the "vintage" ones. The music industry is circling the drain for a while now and I have to say, being born the same year as you, us old folks had a better chance. Thank you for your great and very informative vids!

I understand what you are saying. I also find that being a life long musician and music lover that finding new music that I would have never found is spoon fed to me. I love it. I'm enjoying all this similar yet different music due to algorithms.
Before downloads I remember buying an album (tape or CD for me) was an experience. I’d listen to the entire album all the way thru 3 or 4 times. Take the time to learn song titles. Look at the lyrics and artwork. It was a special moment because that’s the choice I picked for the limited funds I had. With downloads we lost touch with all of that. Now everyone has the attention span of a gnat and seldom really appreciate the content.

Yep, buying an album in a store, taking it home, putting it on the stereo (or CD player) was an event...listening to the tracks while looking at the album Art and liner notes... sigh...good times...good times
The most important factor you left out, Rick, is that today's music doesn't grab and hold you, doesn't have the passion and emotion, and is shortly forgotten so new stars are almost non-existent let alone internationally known.

Just watched the official mv for I Love You by Fontaines DC and the song was built in an unusual and cool way, showed a little bit of power in the middle of the song, then I was hoping the end he was gonna be like lettin loose, like screaming but didn't happen. That's how music has always been, the only difference being there used to be great artists and bands to emulate. Today , it's one crappy group copying another. There are no such thing as bands anymore. And that's part of the problem. No musicians getting together touring clubs and dive bars, learning their craft. Today it's people in their bedrooms making a beat on their laptop and singing over it. The world is desperate for a band that can actually play and write good songs. Their own songs. Written by them.
The Foo Fighters. Halftime show would be huge.

They were the first rock band that came to my mind, but considering Grohl is 55 years old it kind of just further proves Rick's point.

Yeah but they have 2-3 songs that most people know. Certainly, I like 2 or 3 of them but can only name one ("Everlong" is a song I never get tired of hearing). They did a great acoustic version of that in Howard Stern's studio; back in the 90s. He used to play that clip a lot.

There was so much great music coming out daily in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. Metal, Rock, Pop, Motown, and Hip hop and on and on. The 60s were a little before me but the Beatles, Stones, The Who, the beach music, etc. our whole lives revolved around our favorite artists and their music. Everyone talked about when AC/DC, ZZTop, Cheap Trick or Van Halen’s next album was coming out and I am leaving out the large majority of artists. It was constantly evolving until it wasn’t.
The guitar solo is 100% prerecorded she slides into a note a half step too low and makes a mistake, but the note rings out perfectly.
I saw a clip with HER because she can really play, saw it but knew this was faked, can't tolerate that stuff.

@@autkyou should learn to tolerate it at the superbowl because basically every year the music accompaniment is pre-recorded except Prince. This goes back to Michael Jackson in 1993, he was singing to backing tracks

Coincidentally, I toured Prince's Paisly Park studio yesterday, and they showed a section of the Super Bowl performance. Agree - best ever. I'm not sure if his guitar solo was prerecorded....I'll have to watch again. Knowing his perfectionism, I probably can't tell anyway.

George Michael spoke of something similar, in relation to the decline of the youth culture/music connection and thus the lack of really big artists. The decentralization point is so spot on.
George Michael always had his finger on the pulse on what the broader implications of changing dynamics of the music industry were. He also said the music industry is going to have to find a way to rebuild itself. The music industry and its consumers cannot rebuild this if they don't understand the problem they are trying to solve - and sadly, most don't.
The moment you said "decentralization of culture" I pretty much shot up in my seat, that's word for word the subject of a university paper I'm writing right now which is largely focused on music and the exact trends you described. Really cool that you're drawing attention to stuff like this, I think it's super interesting to think about in a big picture context and what it means for the future of the industry.

Would love to read it, will it be a dissertation or a masters thesis? Or a research paper for a class? Either way, really interested in that- I teach research and writing and we look at data sometimes from viewership and if you can get listener data that’d be cool
another thing to consider is many schools have removed music from school Curriculums. when i grew up we had music, chorus &dance class and now i see they cut alot of that out so i think thats if not has had an impact will definately impact music in 10years.
@@tattoofthesun just a research paper, the main angle is that it’s gotta involve a heavy degree of survey-based social research so I haven’t worked out the exact structure I’m gonna approach it with, but I think it’ll be cool looking at the different ways audiences interact with music and culture now. Appreciate the encouragement!

I haven’t been impressed by a halftime show in a long time. Usher did a great job. Lots of moving parts, the marching band and skating were really great.
I listened to a country music station here in Seattle today for the first time in a long time and listened to the same song, three songs in a row. Three bands, same chord progression, basically rapping. I used to listen to country a lot in the 90s, didn’t sound like today’s. Guess I’ll go back to my classic rock stations. By the way, Foo fighters could pull a Super Bowl off. When they do it, they should play a Prince song to return the favor.
A Classic Country format station just came on here in the Sacramento market and it is amazing how varied and talented some of the old stuff they are playing was. I turn it off when they play something modern.
I also thought of the Foo Fighters when he mentioned rock bands doing the halftime show. They’ve been around for a long time and have plenty of big songs and high energy. They could definitely pull it off.
I wish rock and roll would come back to the Super Bowl.

Agree. I miss the actual ROCK bands. I like his idea of having Metallica do it in the future. But there should be other ones. And newer ones! It's sad that we don't have new epic rock bands anymore.

Great video, Rick nailed it and especially at the big picture level; - music’s de-centralization due to the role of algorithms & siloing. The irony was that streaming and the internet was presumably trying to bring “more music to more people”, yet oddly by spreading it out so wide horizontally into personal silos there are vastly fewer world wide stars, or even recognized artists, as Rick says.
I teach a class of 16-18 year olds and they are really into music. Last week they asked me what I listen to and played them some Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. Then they asked me to play the music they like which I did. Best class ever!!

@@nursestew One was D-Block Europe [hip hop] They are also into a genre of music called grime which is UK rap. The most popular artists are Central-Cee and Dave. Have a listen to a song called Sprinter by these two. The wordplay is great.

I love the fact that you keep up on changing musical trends and new artists. Especially the fact that you try to understand and appreciate new music.
When I was a teenager, I was almost entirely focused on heavy metal and thrash. Only as I got older did I start to branch out and discover other genres and other eras. I also learned to keep up on emerging musical trends.
It's actually funny thinking of Usher as a legacy artist when I first heard of him from a co-worker who was barely out of high school when I was in my mid-twenties. (Man, I feel old now).

The thing that I was most impressed with was the fact that Usher was singing live. And I agree that music is experienced totally differently now. I haven't really listened to current music since around 2006. I did go on a Dua Lipa kick a couple years ago when I discovered her music, but in general, I haven't really heard anything good since the mid '00s. I remember the days when I would hear about a new single from my favorite band, having to wait until it dropped, and then having to wait again for the full album. Does that even happen anymore? I mostly listen to old music. I currently have Imogen Heap's 2005 album "Speak For Yourself" on repeat every time I'm in the car. SO GOOD.
But anyway, I feel like the 90s was really the last great decade for music.

I am 40 so I like 90 music. Heard a saying that your favorite music is during your teenage years. I also like podcast (history buff) more than music. Thank you for the realization that I do not know many new artist and it is not just me.
My favourite music is from before I was born lol
90s was such a high point for entertainment, coming off the back of some brilliant decades of evolution. In hindsight the 90s feels like the most polished version of a wonderfully analogue world. Before smart phones, digital film, social media etc. Not down on modern life but glad I was able to experience first hand what that decade had to offer.
Foo Fighters could do a halftime show.
I had the same thought, but I don't know what they would do to keep the excitement up. Rock needs to incorporate bringing up different musicians to make it more exciting. The Foos just running through 4 or 5 songs would be dull compared to what we're accustomed to now.

@@patrickworld I feel like Dave Grohl and co., who have friends from literally all walks of the music industry, could find some creative covers/mashups to do. They play to stadium size crowds anyway, just needs to beef up everything with dancers, and stunts, then have it shot creatively. For all we know, we may end up with Queens of the Stone Age, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Slash, and Trent Raznor mashing up all kinds of tunes with the Foo Fighters.

I know I'm not the only one who was thinking "Foo Fighters" when you asked if any other bands could do the halftime show. I'm honestly shocked that they have not done it yet. They have been around for decades, have hits. Shoot, Dave could pull up his cell phone contact list and have an all star cast of people join him with just a few text messages.
I don't think he'd want to though, the guy was serving up BBQ pork butts to homeless people during the game, no joke! Not really his scene and that just makes him all the better in my opinion.

Prince was an amazing performer…voice, guitar, dance…whole package. I think, though, there’s a case to be made that Michael Jackson’s Super Bowl performance with Jennifer Batten on guitar was the best half time show. It was pretty epic.
Such an excellent commentary. Usher was indeed excellent. It’s refreshing to see raw talent back in the superbowl halftime show, not a show full of smoke and mirrors trickery to make up for the lack of vocal talent or musicianship.
while snowboarding out west a few weeks ago i rode a chairlift with a 12 year old boy and we talked about our favorite artists. our lists over lapped each other more than expected. there's still hope for the younger generation. my music tastes span from the 1960's to current mostly rock. he mostly listens to country and 80's rock, me currently mostly european rock bands from 2000-2024.

I agree. I didn't really like the half time show, but do respect the talented artists that performed. I didn't have a beef with the music as much as the types of music. I would like a rock or country or blues artist to play along side a R&B artist maybe even a rapper to showcase a fusion of music styles and maybe even have them jam together on the last tune.
They always want to push diversity, but we don't have diversity in music. I get the whole world stage thing, but the world could use some rock and roll and fusion of music coming together!
I'd like to see Chris Stapleton, Joe Banamassa, Taylor Swift and Snoop Dog play the next superbowl. And a few surprise artists join in from the crowd just in attendance, of course it would be planned but only the musicians would know.
I know Phil Collins is not well, but if he could play a drum set to his in the air tonight with Chris Stapleton doing vocals, that would be epic.

Rick, you nailed it when you mentioned the word "celebrity". That's what music has become. People today are not interested in music itself like they used to be. They're not discerning and have no personal musical taste because they're only interested in the "celebrity" component and influence that comes with it. And rock has lost it's way, that's why we don't see it at the Half Time Show.

Keep pursuing what you love, and in a practical sense, don’t worry about becoming ‘worldwide.’
Instead, develop the skills to market your music and yourself as a brand, and build your own audience.
You don’t have to be famous to build even a small following that will support what you do.

Ooohhh...that hurts! But very true, who today, as a 'new' artist, really has commanding power? I'm glad I saw a lot of concerts in my past, I won't be seeing too many more looking ahead.
U2 did it live in '02, but doing stadium shows is just another weekend for them. Very few modern artists have the skillset of live performance to carry a show on musical talent alone, let alone in a large stadium.
I love U2 and would love to see them get the gig again, but I seem to recall a huge backlash, when Apple automatically downloaded their new album to folks itunes accounts for free years ago. Not so sure that their popularity is strong enough for today's viewing audience.
I was wondering if U2 had done one but I was too lazy to look it up. 🤣

I think the Foo Fighters are the only rock band that can still be featured on the Super Bowl. They have been around a long time. I appreciate your thought on the decentralization of music. I never thought about it that way.

Usher definitely sang that live. I watched the performance and during the first half, he was consistently sharp. It was still a great performance and invoked nostalgia.
Rick, I haven't enjoyed a halftime show in quite a while. The only new artist who caught my attention a few years ago was Bruno Mars. Yes, I'm old and that has something to do with it. And I wouldn't know an Usher tune if it smacked me across the face. But I agree 100% with you that this was a good show, and I was especially impressed with Usher's singing & dancing. He has genuine talent, as did virtually everyone in the show.

I mean, RHCP, Foo Fighters and Bon Jovi come to mind. I think there are still some bands that do well and have a deep discography of hits.
RHCP played with Bruno Mars at his SB halftime show and Bon Jovi, the Foos, just for older wt ppl. A group they really dont need to cater to to get them to tune in. Those days are over, long over.

That you for answering my question about HER. I was watching her hand, particularly her left hand. She did not appear to be playing live. I have seen her on numerous award shows with a guitar but she never appears to
play live. I believe she is component but not a virtuoso. I would really love to see her REALLY play. I read an interview with an old school producer, I can’t recall who that stated he has known her since she was a child and saw her learning different instruments.
