RUG Ford toploader has 1st gear 2nd gear 3rd gear larger gears to relieve stress and to accelerate quickly down the drag strip with a high rear gear ratio such as 3:25 differential...
Wow so many different versions of the Top Loader, i thought there was just a Big Block version, with the Bigger Shafts, and then a Small Block version with Smaller Shafts. Quite impressive, you know your Top Loaders.
Ford sure did have a lot of different transmissions, I think chevy had just a few that covered all models ,you really have to be an expert to know all the ford info .
Freddy, I just purchased a 69 CJ Mustang with a top loader 4 sp. I have a strange vibration in the driveline on acceleration. I’m kinda hoping it’s in the u joints but I’m not sure. The rear end is quiet, no roaring, etc. Can you advise me on a diagnosis trick to figure this out? If it worse case what would my rebuild run in dollars please. I’m good with install just not rebuilds.. Thanks, Rick in Florida
You might check for a worn tailshaft bushing, just crawl under the car and grab the driveshaft and give it a good shake back and forth any kind of play is a bad sign. You can also pull the driveshaft and look for any sign of wear on the input of the driveshaft and/or the bushing in the transmission, neither should show any galling or signs of grooving from a lack of lubrication. Some of these were flat towed with the shaft still in, and some people had a habit of slipping the car into neutral on long downhill runs, neither of these provide sufficient oil to the tailshaft bushing of the transmission and can cause excessive wear to the output yoke on the driveshaft, or the bushing in the output of the transmission and will/can cause vibration and a growling sound from the transmission.
Where are you located? I need some parts for my top loader. It’s numbers are RUGBJ1 I was told it came out of a mustang and from what you are saying about the shifters then the guy was right that sold it to me. I’m having trouble out of my reverse, I’ve only been able to get it in reverse a few times and it doesn’t seem like I’m gonna be able to get it in reverse anymore by the way it’s acting. I figured after I ran it around some with good fluid in it then it would start working but it hasn’t and I’m tired of pushing it out of the garage. Do you have a exploded view of how it’s assembled and a parts list so maybe I can find what my problem is Do you have something like that you could send me ? Let me know and I’ll send you my address and email
If you can locate the five speed transmission from one of the Mercury XR4-Ti Merkur they are a five speed that is a direct bolt in to the Pinto 2.0 & 2.3 four cylinder engines.
