You have a new subscriber.....your voice is like heaven on earth. I envision the sweetest person walking on earth.....thank you for all of the good information
Your soothing voice makes me confident in growing my peas. I am from Alaska and I’m going to be growing for the first time with peas. I’ve just planted them into tiny seed starters that I can transplant into a larger bed when I feel they are ready. It’s still chilly here at night but I’m feeling good about it. Thanks for your info.
Thanks for SO MUCH information you’ve included here. I’m trying gardening this year for the very first time, and this video will help me throughout the entire growing season!
I have not been able to grow peas successfully in Southern California. I've tried every year and at different times but I never get enough to make a meal. This year I started my seeds in December and hoping we don't get too warm this winter. I love all your videos!
A treasure trove of information that reflects the time, effort and experience put into it. One of the most helpful videos i have watched! Only thing i find works better is to soak the seeds and sprout them in damp paper towel before planting. I find i get better results that way. It might be because it is colder here in Scotland so to get ahead i do that and plant them in a container. Once it has reached about 10-20cm i put them outside and i find they do much better than direct sowed ones.
I have been binge waiting your videos because I love them! I subscribed a few weeks ago and have learned sooooo much! Thanks you for sharing you gardening wisdom. 😉
+Golighty678 Thank you so much! I am glad you enjoyed it. I am currently working on other complete videos for various herbs and vegetables. Feel free to check out the carrots and spinach videos too. Have a Happy New Year.
This worked so well for me in the spring!now I'm looking forward to do it again this fall ! I'm starting now every two weeks in ground. I'm watching this again for grate info. Thanks
So clear and informative. This is my second year of growing my vegetables. Started too late last year with my Sugar Snaps, only harvested about a pound. I logged on to see how long germination usually is. Thank you.
I grow sugar snaps every year and love them. Your video was well made and helpful on all fronts. Great for newbies just getting into gardening and a great review for those of us that are oldies, too. Thanks.
I love how many visual examples you give of everything! It's so thorough and informative, it makes your video's really stand apart from others, just wonderful :) I've learned so much from just watching a couple of your video's. Thank you!
Absolutely! I think I might actually be able to grow some carrots this year, thanks to your thorough video on it :) I also enjoyed all the information on the herbs!
What an incredible video, you really did a great job. I have been having problems with rats eating everything. Initially, I though it was the crows eating my garden but it was rats. They manage to get though the Fencing wire' cages I built. Now, I built cages with fencing wire for backing, and chicken wire wrapped around it for the rats. The mix is nice and portable too. This is a great way of stoping deer, elk, crows and now rats too. Chicken wire is really cheap and effective at stopping a lot of animals, such as rabbits. Wrap each pot or small plot in wire. CORN has been a nightmare, but now I wrap the container tops with wire, it is working. They love the kennels. Thanks for the tips, I really learnt a lot. My Mother has hundreds of rabbits on her property that have dug tunnels everywhere. We watch them mate at dinner time, it is hilarious. Non stop too. She has been battling them with chicken wire, you must go underground too. Good luck.
+chrisregpick I imagine the rabbits are hard to control! Here is a recent video I put together for other ways to control rodents: ua-cam.com/video/SrRaX1xu_9I/v-deo.html
Love your channel. I'm here in Charlotte North Carolina and your videos have helped me a lot. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Keep going strong. Happy Memorial Weekend.
That was a great video Donna. I hope you do similar videos for your container garden too especially your herbs and coneflower . This video style is wonderful where one gets all the information under one umbrella but I love your garden tour style too, one gets to see a bit of everything .
Thank you so much! I hope to do more on herbs. I have had so many requests for more instructional videos but they can be time consuming. I don't do many because it is hard to teach gardening to someone when I don't know where they live, the climate, soil, etc. After my father passed away, I wished I could of asked him which varieties of vegetables he grew, but I could not because he was gone. When I do videos like this, I imagine I am talking to my own children, who may also, one day, wonder what type of vegetable "mom" (me) grew. This helps me keep my videos focused. :) My videos are a way of carrying on my fathers legacy of gardening.
I so agree with what you said. If only I could implement everything you said but everything is so different in every possible way . We need to adapt and figure out what works best in our conditions. Your youtube videos will be such a great gift to give your children:)
Mumbai Balcony Gardener I will continue to do many tour videos. I think showing what I grow gives me credibility as a gardener, but also, it helps other people (like you) adapt my information to their own growing conditions. :)
Wow! What an informative and lovely video! I learn so much! I will be direct sowing some maestro peas on my bamboo teepee tomorrow. I hope to get great success like you ! Thanks!
This might just be the best video I have ever seen! I love all your tips and demonstrations and the attention to detail you provided throughout. Also, your voice is soothing and added to the enjoyment I had watching your video. Wonderful!!
Love the video. I love peas and intend on growing some this year. I've already got most of my seeds gathered. A few that I still have to get. My husband has finally agreed to a garden in the back of our house and has asked me to mark where I want it to be. I'm excited about that as well as getting my seeds given to me. I'll also be trying some new vegetables this year as well.
LARK'S GARDENS Thanks Lark! I tried starting them indoors because I would only get about 6 out of 8 come up (birds eat them). Once I learned to succession plant them & direct sow, it was SOW easy! Never will I start indoors again. After transplanting them into the garden, they go through a bit of shock which slows the initial growth, so there really was not significant growth difference between the two. Since I have a family, I need all the extra time I can get - direct sowing is for me! :)
If I waited for decent weather for my Spring planting, I wouldn't be eating Sugar Snap Peas until July. So my first planting of seeds is indoors. I do 'direct sow' my second planting, which grows quite quickly. But then we are quite different zones. Happy planting my friend. :0)
i know im randomly asking but does anyone know a tool to log back into an instagram account? I was dumb lost the password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me.
@Carmelo Lennon i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Wonderful, because I love to teach! :) I'll try to do more of this kind of video. My Lemongrass instructional video was circulated by viewers, so it makes it fun! We have been snowed in most of the week, I have yet to pop your seeds into the mail. It is on my counter, stamped and ready to go. They should go out Monday for sure. :) I also want to do a thorough video on the Kaffir Lime tree. :)
No worries at all : ) Thank you. I am glad you are doing these videos. You have a way of explaining that makes it quite easy to remember and understand. I am not much on FB anymore but I will make a point to share .
I took your suggestion and got the super sugar snaps. I live in region 6A (CT). It is due to rain tomorrow so I will put them our on Thursday. Hope they do well as this is my very first try at growing peas and beans. Thanks!
Barbara Rickman I hope you get a harvest. I live in 6b and it is much too hot for them right now in mid-June. I planted mine in March and have already harvested them and pulled out the old vines. However, don't worry, I will also plant them again about 10 weeks before my first frost. So I will plant some more early August.
Very interesting and thorough primer on peas. Thank you for sharing. Question: Do you subscribe to Mel's ideas on soil - the 1/3 compost, 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 vermiculite? I'm about to finish two 4x8 beds and am debating whether to adhere to this or not. (I've read stories of the soil not holding water well enough). Any thoughts would be appreciated.
yerboyfloyd Hi! I always mix it the way he specifies in the book, 1/3 of each. I find it works very well. It holds water wonderfully but it should be watered deeply during hot weather. I just love the soil mix. I have some garden tours of my newest square foot garden on my channel. Just search "garden tour" and you can see some examples of how well the beds did during July and August. This was at a location where it relied mostly on rain water and morning dew. I don't live at the location where I put the new sfg's. .
this channel is just outstanding! Thanks for the pea freezing tips. I don't freeze much, because as a newer gardener, I'm just now starting to get to the point of having enough to feed my family fresh. It takes a few seasons to get to the point of mastering staggered planting, garden organization, and realizing how many plants it takes to feed a family! Should all veggies be blanched prior to freezing?
Thank you so much. I blanch almost everything (carrots, green beans, spinach, kale, etc.) except peppers. I was able to "master" staggered planting about my third year gardening. It takes a little practice to learn how the weather changes during each season and how long you have to grow a certain crop. Just give it some time and it will become second nature before you know it. :)
Got to love zone 8, I will be looking for more videos from you in regards to companion or succession planting to get a better idea on which crops to plant.
Very informative. Thank you. I will look for those super snap peas in my garden store. I have some Oregon Sugar Pod II right now that have sprouted up in 6 packs. I will set them out asap to get them in the ground.
I share on Face book! This is a wonderful video! We are in the middle of a snow storm here in Oklahoma so really enjoyed this and made me so hungry for something fresh and green! You do a beautiful job!
Succession planting is a wonderful thing for sure! Peas (3 times, in spring and fall), carrots (all spring, summer, and fall), bush beans (all summer), and radishes (all spring, summer, and fall), cucumbers (2 times in the summer). Those are just some of my favorite succession plantings.
Rainbow Gardens These will be mine as well although I am jealous 6B have a 3 week jump start on 5B for planting. I'm also going to try lettuce in spring and fall. Hate to buy store lettuce now - so stale compared to fresh. Well done video - I've watched it 3 times - this will be one I refer to often - thanks again.
+Angela Mckeown Than you so much! I spent 7 years reading children's books to my boys when they were little. I would sometimes read up to 20 a day. :) I also collect children's books. :)
+Sunbeam Road Designs Thanks so much! Will give it a try. I have a few others on m y channel you may find helpful too. For now, here is a playlist to get you started: ua-cam.com/play/PLHqRalqOVeFzap0sqZzMXgmxFQf1MZW-k.html For fun: ua-cam.com/video/kJxsxaCzeRE/v-deo.html
Hi, love your videos, I'm from the Caribbean and I'm trying to grow sugar daddy peas over here. Is it the same as sugar snap peas? also, can they tolerate heat? we only have two seasons over here rainy season, where it rains a lot lol and sunny/ dry season.
Thank you for your lovely video. It's Autumn here and we have some 2week old pea shoots growing in our garden. Do you prune yours at all to encourage more branches? We have planted some before but they only got very leggy and didn't produce much. I'm wondering if pruning them would help. Thank you :)
Very informative. Thanks. I am growing the same peas. Since I am in zone 9b, I am almost over with the harvest. Do you think I can get a second harvest of the peas if I don't pull them from the soil? I was able to get the second harvest with blue lake bean.
+Yao Lin It is hard to say. If it gets warm, the next harvest will be small. You can leave a few on the vine and save the seed. However, if your home garden is like mine, it may be small. I like to pull out non-productive plants and replace with something which will produce in the new upcoming season.
Thanks for a great video! I'm really interested in where you purchased your mobile trellis. I will assume that when you say it mobile that you can simply lift it off the ground, move it to another spot, and just jab it into the soil and it'll be strong enough to stand on it's own. I'd prefer a 5' in height and the width can be cut to various lengths.
richk3c hi there, this is JD from Missouri. try cattle fence. thats what I used for my yard long beans. I bought mine from Orschlen. there were 2 types, one is wider. but I believe each panel is about 16 ft. I had each panel cut two, so about 8 ft each which I just made to lean on the wall of my house. i'm only 4'11 so whenever I had to harvest, I pull the trellis towards me lol if you want your trellis to be able to stand, you can just stake it. the cut-to-height cattle fence is very easy for me to move around.
+Paul M Our official last frost date is around late April, but we do not plant out our summer crops until May 10 - 15. It sounds like you live in the same climate as me. I typically plant out pea seeds for the fall about 4-6 weeks before the first frost. You should be ok planting your pea seeds right now too for a spring harvest in June.
damage looks like -pale/ browning leaves almost splotches of tanning, very small dark red bugs on back of older leaves, works up the plant quickly..hard to kill with pure neem. i will post a picture asap thanks
+Hoan Do Hi, You can check out your frost date here: www.almanac.com/content/frost-chart-united-states I usually plant mine about 8 weeks before my last frost date. You can plant them in the fall too.
+Руслан Псеунок Hi! Over the summer, I used some seasonal vegetables from the garden to make curry for the family. Here is the video of you would like to check it out. ua-cam.com/video/_pSOOzJncts/v-deo.html Also, here is the video for the curry paste, but you can usually find it at the market if you do not want to make it. ua-cam.com/video/XVq3ZaUs1NI/v-deo.html

Some great information! I love fresh peas, and so do the kids.

I wasn't sure I'd enjoy the style of your video, but once I started watching, it became quite interesting. The ending is great. :)

The Peeping Egg More on the way. I hope you were able to check out my other "How to Grow" videos on my channel page.
Good luck.

That was wonderful information! Now I better check and see what day I can start planting--thanks for your help!
That makes my day! I hope you enjoy growing them as much as we do, my son loves them too!
I am growing in Madison fl zone 8b. I like hearing your successsuccessful verities for this area. Thanks
I thought about this video while munching on (store bought) sugar snap peas this morning. I can't wait for my own to be ready for harvest.
+Emmy Emmy Me too!

I am very happy to share all your videos.
Absolutely wonderful. Thanks again. :)

so much info. need to watch it several times. I like bean shoots if you do a tutorial on that toipic wonderful
Sure! It's in the video. The shoots are wonderful but the tendrils can be tough
you should read children's books, your voice is perfect for that! I really enjoy your videos, lots of info!

So good!

Nadia Ayoub Thank you. :)
Great information 🌿
Fantastic. Thanks for all the info.
+Leslie Witherspoon Thanks so much!
+Ivy Clark I have not had to prune mine. One time my grew leggy too and it was because I planted them in an area which did not get enough sun.
Love your channel
Thanks for a great video! I'm really interested in where you purchased your mobile trellis. I will assume that when you say it mobile that you can simply lift it off the ground, move it to another spot, and just jab it into the soil and it'll be strong enough to stand on it's own. I'd prefer a 5' in height and the width can be cut to various lengths.
richk3c hi there, this is JD from Missouri. try cattle fence. thats what I used for my yard long beans. I bought mine from Orschlen. there were 2 types, one is wider. but I believe each panel is about 16 ft. I had each panel cut two, so about 8 ft each which I just made to lean on the wall of my house. i'm only 4'11 so whenever I had to harvest, I pull the trellis towards me lol
if you want your trellis to be able to stand, you can just stake it.
the cut-to-height cattle fence is very easy for me to move around.
Very good video. I subscribed. My peas are turning yellow - is it too cold or can you think of another reason? I am in zone 4 so they are young.
Paula Beattie Did you plant from seed? Are you experiencing a frost?
Such a great video! Thank you so much 😊
Great video. Question: what seed catalog is 2nd from the left?
Very good video.
I wish I knew how to cook like you can!
Wow you live in a really warm climate.. my last frost is May 1st. Can I plant them early - ie before first frost?
+Paul M Our official last frost date is around late April, but we do not plant out our summer crops until May 10 - 15. It sounds like you live in the same climate as me. I typically plant out pea seeds for the fall about 4-6 weeks before the first frost. You should be ok planting your pea seeds right now too for a spring harvest in June.
does the damp towel and plastic bag method work of germination?
I'll put the them in egg shells as soon as they start sprouting
What State are you in? Trying to see how Michigan would compare to your planting recommendations. Thank You.
+Richard Gorlitz North Carolina.
Do you have a video using the dome greenhouse.
Thanks for the interesting videos.
timshel Leo No, sorry. I don't have the dome. :)
super sugar peas very good variety, tender for awhile and sweeter. i will always grow even they are not that easy. mine spider mites in fl.
s Buzz Gotta love peas! So spider mites get yours huh? What does the damage look like?
damage looks like -pale/ browning leaves almost splotches of tanning, very small dark red bugs on back of older leaves, works up the plant quickly..hard to kill with pure neem. i will post a picture asap thanks
How often do you fertilize the plants?
Hello, I am living in Houston, Texas. What is the best time (month) to start to plan the Sugar Snap. Any help is appreciated, Thanks.
+Hoan Do Hi, You can check out your frost date here: www.almanac.com/content/frost-chart-united-states
I usually plant mine about 8 weeks before my last frost date. You can plant them in the fall too.
