Thank you for your most informative videos including this one on deep winter clothing. I do like your factual no-nonsense way of dealing with your subject matter. Glad I subscribed as you seem to have a host of relevant knowledge for the outdoors.
Outstanding video! I have a pair of wool socks my mom knitted for me in 1968 and I use them on special occasions, mainly ice fishing. Merino wool is fantastic! Thank you for this video. It was 10f for my walk this morning so it's time to think about dressing for the cold. Take care. Sincerely, Ossie
Thank you for a very comprehensive look at proper layering during colder weather. It has taken me a long time to learn what to wear and when, so I wish this video had come out about a decade ago!
+atomkinder67 Ha,ha... Well, one thing for sure, you have learned the hard way, and you will allways remember it cause of that. Thank you for watching Odd
+Far North Bushcraft And Survival Thank you Lonnie, I guess you also were wool in the cold? I forgot to mention that I usually in snowy conditions use a thin winter camoflage suite, or at least the pants as a snow protector for my regular clothes Odd
+NorwegianBushcraft I very rarely wear wool other than occasionally I will wear a wool shirt. I prefer polypropolene underwear and synthetic fleece over that with a nylon outer layer to prevent snow from sticking and wind from penetrating. I prefer synthetic fleece over wool because it is so much easier to dry out if it gets wet.
+Far North Bushcraft And Survival Wool clothing will still retain it's heat when soaked, unlike cotton that will get freezing when exposed to moisture. Wool is also more fire retardant than fleece and wool will not burn to the skin if set on fire unlike synthetic fabrics.

Great video and an excellent topic. I appreciate the big diversity of options you covered. It was very educational and technically informative. I am looking forward to seeing more vids. Thanks.
Great video. So many great tips. I agree cotton blend Fjallraven gear is super versatile and the right amount of protection vs ventilation. Moisture buildup chills you down even in perfect conditions. I would rather wear breathable layers and put on a shell if it rains or to conserve heat when you stop moving.
Odd, tusen takk. (I’ve learned a few Norwegian words.) I agree with you, anything natural such as wool is better than most artificial products though there are some very good artificial ones out there. Folks usually don’t purchase natural products due to their price. But I’d rather shell-out the cost now than pay the price later when it’s really cold. When I entered the Marines in 1965 they issued us a wool neck scarf and I wondered what use it would be. I found out later and it made all the difference. I liked your idea of layering and being careful with the type of layering material. Great show. Takk Henry
4:30 in England, our head teacher taught us a useful phrase "The gate is open, but the beast is asleep". Good video, I have viddda pro trousers which are excellent. Thanks for all your other video's too.
Great video mate. Good layers and good selection, really loving the ridge line anorak. I have one of those kenwood ushanka hats. Really warm. Good to see you out! All the best, Rob.
An excellent point about keeping the fingers warm in a mitten. I often operate skidoos/snowmobiles at temperatures as low as -45 degrees C or even colder and use beaver or wolf fur mitts. lines with sheepskin. At those temperatures, though it is necessary to also have liner gloves (as well as heated hand grips on the snowmobile) to avoid freezing. I too have had frost bite in my fingers and can relate to the "weakness" experienced in the hands at very low temperatures (the arthritis doesn't help). Hence I do try to keep them warm. In fact, in the winter, even at home, I will often dunk my hands in a sink of hot water in the morning just get my fingers warmed up and moving. Works in seconds. Another excellent video. Thanks very much!

Excellent discussion Odd, timely video as I just ordered the Vidda Pro pants and Sarek Winter Jacket from Fjallravan Canada. I've been studying this subject for the past two years and have found in my winter trekking that the modern materials/textiles trap moisture and do not transport it adequately and allow you to remain active for long. Cotton kills on the inside but releases moisture and blocks wind on the outside. Hoping Fjallraven will accomplish this satisfactorily. I think adding the Greenland wax to strategic areas instead of the entire jacket and pants will provide the best protection against moisture and still allow the garment to breath. Going to try a slight variation of the 4th layer and take a packable light weight down jacket and put it under the winter jacket and over the midlayer if the garment will allow it. Looking forward to experimenting and learning some lessons form my Norwegian brothers. Manufacture by "M.O.M." my Mom lol! She's real good at it too!
+Canesser Ha,ha.. Thanks. Yes she make some great socks. I think you will be happy with the Vidda Pro pants, they are great, I do not own a pair myself, but my brother do have one, and we have been together on some trips. He is very satisfied and I can understand why. They are excellent in my opinion. He used wax on this pants, and they were still quite dry after 5 days in rain. And they are rock solid, even close to the fire. The jacket I do not have any experience with, but shure its solid and well designed comming from fjallraven. -Odd
Odd, takk for the tip about fjallraven's fabric and waxing it. I want an anorak I found on their website, but wasn't sure it would work. Now I know it will!!
Hi, thanks for sharing, can any body help to know the name or modell of the green thick wool balaclava? 23:05 Any another suggestions for similar products? Thanks
Yes, I do... Took me awhile to get it right, I always sweat with a lot of the synthetics, until I found the Under Armor 3.0 which has cross hatches in the inside to promote ventilation without loosing heat. And of course some other fleece, or wool outer liner... Good stuff buddy
recently found your channel, and have been enjoying it. I am interested to see how people from other Northern climates do things. I see my neighbor Lonnie in Alaska is watching too. Great stuff!
+Johnny Yukon Thank you Johnny, glad you find it enjoyable. I`m currently waiting for good winter, now its just a little bit of snow and the temperature stays around freezing. Hoping for some loads of snow and cold weather soon. Will not be like Yukon, but close to. In my area its normal winter with average about -15 to -20 C, sometimes it drop below -30C. Lonnie is a great guy, with lots of knowledge and ideas. Thank you for watching, -Odd
hello odd, i really like the fjallraven clothing i have many of their trousers, the vdda pro's are great for warmer temps and the arktis insulated heavy g1000 for winter they have held up very well in the outdoors. great vid as always odd.take care brother.
Hi Odd ! Very interesting Tutorial my friend. i always use the same layering system in wet and cold weather conditions, so merino wool is my favorite baselayer since a long time. I use a lot of swedish and norwegian stuff for all my activities (Fjallräven, Bergans etc..) This colths are very expensive, but the are robust and the are worth the money.. the do their job for years !! Thanks for the time u have spent to make this video for us Greetings from Austria Harald
awesome video i had a cold sweat i nearly had pneumonia from few years back because i wasn`t wearing a base layer at the time i knew about them. Now ive got a scierra base layer from a fishing shop that draw the moisture away from the body all is well,,,stay safe .
Thanks for sharing.I pretty much use the same type of clothing here in Finland.I also have that Nanok SF you use and it is a great piece of kit during cold weather while taking a break.I am saving up money for the Jerven can't wait to get one :) I use the Hestra Falt guide gloves, for finger gloves they keep my hands vey warm even when it's -20c,i highly recommend them.
yeah odd im not sure if the fjallraven artktis winter trousers r still in production i got mine on sale from theclymb for about 120 us dollars the normally sell for much more, there is a short vid on them on youtube, i love mine because they r so warm and bomber constructed i think they would be perfect for what you r doing my friend, all the best to you and your family odd.
Hey Odd, thank you for this insight and taking out your clothes. The mittens seem to be German Bundeswehr mittens. atb, Andreas, who prefers wool while being out
+real goshawk Hi Andreas, I got some hints from other too that this mittens are German, they are of good quality and I do waterproof the fabric to make them even better. I like them very much. Thank you for watching -Odd
Thank you for sharing all this! However, I do wonder if the Jerven Hunter is not somehow overrated. I have just spent a very cold night in it, while the temperature was not even close to freezing, 6 to 8 degrees Celsius, I would estimate. I can state that it also does not offer any insulation from the cold ground. It must be used in conjunction with a sleeping bag and an insulated ground sheet of some sort, which translates in adding more weight and bulk to your pack. I really didn't feel that 29 degrees Celsius temperature increase, the manufacturer brags about on his site. I must admit that your review of this product contributed to some degree to my decision of purchasing it, and I am a little disappointed with its performance. Do you have any suggestions?
A lot of gear, it must get very cold. Thank you Odd for sharing your knowledge. How warm does it get in the summer there. What is the average temperature, and does it rain much.
+Isle of Wight Bushcraft In the summer the average I belive is around 20C, varies from 10c to 30c, depending on were you are in the country, the same for rain, at the west coast it tend to rain more than inland, but also here it can varie a bit. In the winter the temperature normally stays belw -5C and goes down to -30C, and some places even lower in periodes. Other places in Norway like the west coast, may experience a winter almost without temperature below freezing. So it depends on were you are. Odd
....very informative, I am looking for that Jerven bag, which has a very effective cammo-pattern for winter in the woods/mixed terrain. I saw once something like this one, but with sleeves to zip on. Is it he same? Is it you, who made a video, using this bag as a hammock?
+Herbert Hriberschek Hi Herbert, I ones did a review of this bag, and yes I used it as a hammock too. It comes with sleeves, not zip but there are zippers on the bag, each side, to open and stick your arms with sleeves on thru. This camo is mountain, patternd as a rock, very good camo in the mountains, but also in the forest, cause there tend to be rocks there too. And it gives a very little heat signature on a thermo camera. Odd
Hey Odd, thanks for the clothing vid. I really like those pants. I think I'll need to get a pair. Are they big for their size, or are they true to the size chart? Are they a stretch fabric as well? As for your green Anorak, we use a similar one called a Bushshirt. As Australia and New Zealand have so many sheep, we use a lot of wool products. Have a look at: www.swandri.co.nz/mens/bushshirts.htm It is a wool version of your green anorak. They are quite cheep and very tough. Thanks for your videos mate, I really enjoy them.
+g ride Hi, The pants are pretty true to the chart. The black stuff is stretch and waterproof. I`ve seen the wool shirt you describe, and think it is a great product. Thank you for watching Odd
Helt gull det her!
-Odd
Hi Odd..... Great video mate. If you were wearing that here when I am at the moment...you would die form heat exhaustion. Its about 30'C at the moment. Rob.
My husband really enjoyed this video, loves the cap you're wearing. He said is there a website he can order one? Thanks Please spell the pants for me? ATB L
+MyAnjelGirl Hi L, What cap? The green one called Aclima? www.aclima.no/products/herre/headwear On the website it looks like the closest dealer to you are in Canada. The pants are: Haglofs (Haglöfs) Rugged Mountain Pants, they now produce type II also in the same colors as the one I got. www.haglofs.com/se/en/Pants/RUGGED-II-MOUNTAIN-PANT-MEN/p/602607.2VW There are links to most of it in the video description. Thanks for watching, and just ask if there is something more you wants to know. Odd
Odd, great video; I learned a lot. I did not quite understand what you called the 4th layer bag that you put on -- I thought you said "urine bag," but I know that is not right....lol. But when you said that once in it you could have a good time, it begs the question, "Do they make it in a size to fit two, like you and your girlfriend/wife?" In that case you could definitely stay warm and have a good time. hahaha ;-)
+DocLarsen44 Ha,ha.. Not a urine bag, it is a Jerven bag, made by Jerven.com. This model are called Hunter, and its suitable for one, there is a type called King-Size Thermo, its the same bag, just bigger. That one would be suitable for good times, there will be some condensations I belive. :) Odd
+NorwegianBushcraft first of all, great video! can you tell me whats the material of this jerven bag? it looks to me like a thin polyester or something similar? greetings from montenegro!
It is, thin superstrong nylon with aluminum covered backside for heat reflection. On this particular model, there is primaloft insulation on the inside too. It is very strong, I have even used it as a hammock. Odd
+Herbert Hriberschek I know soldiers in the army used to hide from "enemy" forces with heat signature reading equipment by getting into the bag and crawl up under a tree. They did not get detected. Dont think you need two of them if you use the terrain for your advantage.
I just was looking at there Homepage. Very interesting but they have there price. Doe you have experience on the model where you can take off the insulation? Which one you concider the best? Where to buy it?
Ihave experience with the original without any insulation and bag size 143x143cm, and the one I have Hunter. The exclusive is a relative new version with waterproof zippers and detachable insulation, I have never used or even seen on of them in real life. I`m sure they are good though. My choice is the Hunter, good size and at the same time small pack volume and low weight. Thermo Extreme is another great model, but it is as big as a good size winter sleeping bag, and heavy. I would not carry that just for safety. To heavy and to big. There is a link for purchase in the US, for europe I think you can by directly.
+tinbender998 A urine bag is most likly a bag you can pee in. The bag shown in this video is not a pee bag, its a Jerven bag, usable for shelter, bivi etc. ;)
Hi, Yes singel thick wool sock is ofte better than several layers of thight thinner ones. Of course if you have really big shoes were you can fit several layers without pressing them together, it might be an options, but then again those shoes will not be very good to walk very far in. As shown, around the neck, I often use long zip neck tops, or/and a buff. Works very well. Scarf are also fine. Perosnally I prefere a Buff or any other tube neck warmer.
+NorwegianBushcraft Haglof rugged pants are very confortable and... rugged, but the material on the knees are very fragile if you have to walk through veins ("ronces" in french language) or every little tree with spike. By the way if you like cotton outter lair, did you try gorka stuff from russian military equipment (sposn S gorka for example)? It looks like your jacket and pants. Thanks for all your beautiful videos of course :)
Hi, I find these pants very durable, even the black materials on the knees. I sit on my knees alot and it is still not a hole or rip in them. I may not have been walking thru thorny bushes yet though ;). Never tried the russian stuff. Thank you for watching

Wow! Thank you very much for sharing your expertise.
Thanks for sharing.I pretty much use the same type of clothing here in Finland.I also have that Nanok SF you use and it is a great piece of kit during cold weather while taking a break.I am saving up money for the Jerven can't wait to get one :)
I use the Hestra Falt guide gloves, for finger gloves they keep my hands vey warm even when it's -20c,i highly recommend them.
+yawara600 Thank you for watching, I have to check out the Hestra gloves.

yeah odd im not sure if the fjallraven artktis winter trousers r still in production i got mine on sale from theclymb for about 120 us dollars the normally sell for much more, there is a short vid on them on youtube, i love mine because they r so warm and bomber constructed i think they would be perfect for what you r doing my friend, all the best to you and your family odd.
My Superman costume protects me in all weather - even with undies on the outside it's still warm.
+Ade Larsen Ha,ha.. Nice undies should be on the outside. Show-off!

i think layering is the best , i often think of mallory and irving they used natural materials and layered .
+ratrod diesels That works best, specially when ativity level varies, like in normal hiking skiing etc.

Hey Odd,
thank you for this insight and taking out your clothes.
The mittens seem to be German Bundeswehr mittens.
atb,
Andreas, who prefers wool while being out
+real goshawk Hi Andreas, I got some hints from other too that this mittens are German, they are of good quality and I do waterproof the fabric to make them even better. I like them very much.

Thanks, was very interesting! Greetings from Germany 👊🏽✌🏽
I really enjoyed your video. Allot of great information. Thanks for sharing!
+Jerry Hickey Thank you my friend

Thank you Odd. Interesting

....very informative, I am looking for that Jerven bag, which has a very effective cammo-pattern for winter in the woods/mixed terrain.
Have a look at: www.swandri.co.nz/mens/bushshirts.htm
It is a wool version of your green anorak. They are quite cheep and very tough.
Thanks for your videos mate, I really enjoy them.
+g ride Hi,
The pants are pretty true to the chart. The black stuff is stretch and waterproof. I`ve seen the wool shirt you describe, and think it is a great product.

Helt gull det her!
Hei Hans,
thanks for another very good video Odd. what model is your fjallraven jacket? i have not seen one like it.
+barbourdurham-films Hi, the jacket is called Singi, you get it like this and as a padded version.
Thank you for watching, and Merry Christmas
Odd
+NorwegianBushcraft thanks my friend, and Merry Christmas to you also
Good video Odd, correct clothing depending on what you do is a key issue as I see it (the layer method)! Take care, Joachim

Odd
Hi Odd, what kind of stuff is this on 28:21 ? Its very interesting ;-)
Thanks for answer.

-Odd
Excellent video. Very informative.
Thank you, glad you like it
Can you tell me what woolpower it is for underneath and what brand the net it was for underneath in extreme cold? Thank you
Excellent video!
+PitFireOutdoors Thank you Josh, have you got any permanenet snow yet?
Atb, Odd
Your jacket is not "completely" made from cotton. It´s a mix from 65% polyester and 35% cotton.
Tack för en bra video!
Hi Johan, yea you are right! Its not. Didnt think of that. But its not a technical membrane.
Great Video Odd good lot of information on layering system👍🏻
+Wild Outdoors UK Thank you,

My husband really enjoyed this video, loves the cap you're wearing. He said is there a website he can order one? Thanks Please spell the pants for me? ATB L
+MyAnjelGirl Hi L,
What cap? The green one called Aclima? www.aclima.no/products/herre/headwear
On the website it looks like the closest dealer to you are in Canada.
The pants are: Haglofs (Haglöfs) Rugged Mountain Pants, they now produce type II also in the same colors as the one I got. www.haglofs.com/se/en/Pants/RUGGED-II-MOUNTAIN-PANT-MEN/p/602607.2VW
There are links to most of it in the video description.
Thanks for watching, and just ask if there is something more you wants to know.
Odd
Do you have a video on best foot wear?

Odd
+NorwegianBushcraft first of all, great video! can you tell me whats the material of this jerven bag? it looks to me like a thin polyester or something similar? greetings from montenegro!
It is, thin superstrong nylon with aluminum covered backside for heat reflection. On this particular model, there is primaloft insulation on the inside too.
It is very strong, I have even used it as a hammock.
Odd
Sounds like the name "survival bag" would not be a misnomer. Excellent gear to have in extreme cold environments.
Takk for video .Mhs,Marcin.
+SURVIVE IN NORWAY And thank you for watching Marcin.
-Odd
Thank you Sir 👍💯
...so,if you use two of them, thermo camera will see no signature?
Hey Odd, my husband wanted to know the name of your lumbar bag? I know you told me, but I forgot. Hazards of getting old! ATB L
+MyAnjelGirl The hip-pack? It is a Norrøna(norrona) Kongsvoll Hip Pack 10+15 liters. I dont think it is in production any more.

thanks for the video, how is the knee section of the pants holding up?
What's the bag you wore.
very good video butt i dont know what a urine bag is?
+tinbender998 A urine bag is most likly a bag you can pee in. The bag shown in this video is not a pee bag, its a Jerven bag, usable for shelter, bivi etc. ;)
ohhh i just didnt here right and also i have'nt ever seen or heard of this product. thankyou
Takk Odd, utmerket video. To tommelen opp.

single sock rather than double ? huh -
around neck , why not scarf of some type ?
Hi, Yes singel thick wool sock is ofte better than several layers of thight thinner ones. Of course if you have really big shoes were you can fit several layers without pressing them together, it might be an options, but then again those shoes will not be very good to walk very far in.
As shown, around the neck, I often use long zip neck tops, or/and a buff. Works very well. Scarf are also fine. Perosnally I prefere a Buff or any other tube neck warmer.
What is the bag you use please? ( at 28.30)
Hi Daniel. It is a Jerven Hunter thermo. A kind of bivvy bag.
NorwegianBushcraft
Thank you for your reply! Have a nice day and take care! 👍

Odd
+NorwegianBushcraft Haglof rugged pants are very confortable and... rugged, but the material on the knees are very fragile if you have to walk through veins ("ronces" in french language) or every little tree with spike.
By the way if you like cotton outter lair, did you try gorka stuff from russian military equipment (sposn S gorka for example)? It looks like your jacket and pants.
Thanks for all your beautiful videos of course :)
Hi,
I find these pants very durable, even the black materials on the knees. I sit on my knees alot and it is still not a hole or rip in them. I may not have been walking thru thorny bushes yet though ;). Never tried the russian stuff.
Thank you for watching
Tack så mycket :)
I’m sorry I tried to pay attention to the video but you are just so damn handsome my GOSH!! You’re handsomeness is very distracting lol!
sorry as in base layer sorry
