It's true that a special bond forms when you give a hurt bird the help it needs. I have one that must have sprained something. I didn't separate her exactly, but put her in an area the rooster couldn't/wouldn't reach. The other hens would go in and sit with her sometimes. I got out the chick feeder and waterer and hand fed her treats. She seems to have healed after about a week and went into "gen pop". Now, about a year later, she seems to remember the special care she received from me and makes a point of coming over and at least looking me directly in the eye and suffering my stroking of her feathers. Even without mealworms! lol
A weasel got into my chicken run and attacked one of my red stars. My son rescued her and we didn’t see any visible injuries except missing tail feathers. The next day I noticed her limping and the other hens started picking on her. I kept her away from the others but eventually she couldn’t walk. We continued to feed and water her keeping her in a tote on the back porch. She had stopped laying and didn’t look like she would make it but she did. She is my favorite now and I named her Gimpy. The other hens still won’t let her be so we ordered a new coop for 2 chickens. She will soon have her own palace! I just love her to death!
I really appreciate this video. And the fact that you also did a 1 week a 2 week and a 3 week update on her recovery. That helps a lot other people just upload the video. What they did for the sprain or the injured leg but never do an update so we could see if what they did work. I have a precious little silky. We don't know what's wrong with our leg, but we splintered it. Which is a very young chicken. We're not had to put her in a cradle because she couldn't stand on the leg at all and she was just laying down and she was having trouble eating and drinking because she couldn't get to the food
Thank you so much. We will rest easier tonight and our girl will have another restful night. You made us feel better seeing your hen. We look forward to a full recovery for our little one ❤
The same thing happened to one of my barred rock pullets, she got attacked by a dog and there was a deep laceration in her leg (we could see the bone). We bandaged the leg, but then took off the bandage after a couple of days )it was getting in the way) We also made her a little "chair" to sit in where her legs would kind of dangle, she liked to sit in that some, and we also made her a little nest in the kitchen with food and water. She made a full recovery, just like your hen! It makes me so happy to see chickens make a full recovery!
That chair idea is over the top! I’m gonna have to remember that in case this ever happens again. Thanks for sharing, and as always, thanks for watching the Pretend Farm!
Thank you! I have a chicky that has the same issue. I moved her to the pen I raise chicks next to the main coop. Food and water and hopefully she gets better. Eating and drinking still so that's a good sign.
Thank you for this. One of my Australorp flew off the top perch and hit a bottom purch. She’s been in our house a few days now. Her left leg got injured. I am going to investigate it right now and possibly bandage it. Thanks again🐓🙌❤️
Excellent job. This happened to me years ago with a lovely blue hen named Latte. She was young like this and I had put leg bands on them. It got caught in a bush and she must have pulled it. These things always happen on a Sunday it seems. I splinted it and my vet saw her the next day. Fixed her up and she walked again. Everyone loved her at the vet. Most people didn't know she was a chicken. They would ask what kind of bird she was. She had the tiny pea comb.
Thank you for this inspiring video, My girl somehow got her leg stuck in the coop and hung upside by her leg. It is broken so iv isolated her w food and water. I made her a splint and am hoping/🙏 for the best possible outcome. I will care for her just like you did in hopes of a complete recovery. :)
@@pretendfarm Does this beauty have a name? I'm going throught the same thing with a black astralorp hen. She was attacked by 2 dogs 2 days ago and I walked out right before they kicked her. But unfortunately she seems to have a broken leg. I've isolated her and she seems chipper given the circumstances. I'm hoping she pulls through but unfortunately those 2 dogs killed a cat and 2 other chickens. 😢
Thanks pretend farmer! We have 1 hen with a gimpy leg (seems like it’s dislocated at the hip maybe?). She’s not really been picked on but has been trying to act like she is okay even though she’s clearly struggling to walk, but it hasn’t gotten better in days. We’re inspired by your video and are trying the isolate-in-tote method on our screen porch. I have not had good luck healing chickens with various maladies but hoping for the best this time.
I have a 8 week old Pullet with a broke leg in the exact same set up and she just flew right out 😩… I had to put her in a cage on her own poor little thing. Hope she heals fast
I currently have a barred rock roo that we named Lazarus. I posted in a chicken group on facebook and was told that id be better off culling him. It appears to be a possible slipped tendon. My chickens limping :C , she can still walk, eat and drink but she's limping! whenever shes standing, her postures bad.. I looked at both of her legs and massaged it, tapped on places and for her, her knee is hurting.. what should i do? None of my chickens are attacking her but instead comforting her and sitting next to her.

Something happened to my chicken, the other hens are pecking her and trampling her wings. So I put her in my dog cage with food, water, shavings, I give her fresh air everyday, it's been 9 days she isn't really getting better, her leg sticks out straight behind her and she doesn't move it.
