I really like Justin. He always explains 'how' to play things. I used to be a great guitar player, but with time comes change, so I had to put down the guitar for 30 years or so. Well, now that i am 70, I have some time to 'start again'. Thank you Justin for helping me on my journey!
Respecttt sir
I watched a bunch of tutorials on this song and you are the first guy to get it right in regards to how Tom plays it. Those subtle differences really make the song. Well done!
Tom Waits will always elicit a thumbs up from over here! :)
Tom Waits should be so much better known, a genius, Nick Drake is criminally unknown too.
So is Arcane Soakes
I cried when I first heard this song . I will give playing it a try. Thanks Justin Guitars for taking the time for this beautiful song.
I cry every single time I hear this song :D
This could not have been more perfectly timed. I have been listening to this for a few days now and wanted to learn it. Can't get it out of my head. Thank you so much.
Watching your lessons is a true soul therapy.
Love this song. He who hesitates...
Hey Justin could you make a lesson for Tom Waits - Martha?
Thanks Justin for this song! Especially thanks for that simpler fingerpicking. Makes my rookie practicing way easier! 🙏🏼✌️
Nice singing Justin!!!! I really missed this... 'caus C chord and F just makes me F over G G9. When the F chord....' lovely! This makes my heart smiles my friend... because I've spend so many hours with you during my process... nostalgic. Thank you so much!!!
that song really suits your voice! thanks for all your help over the past year.
The video has been out there a long time I know Justin, but what a great explanation of a fabulous song. I'm on it now! Thanks
This song really suits your voice!!
Thanks!
Wow, so happy you did this tune! Will definitely try to pick it up over new years :D
First time I've saw a video with you singing and you are awesome Justin!!
What a beautiful song! What a masterful songwriter is Tom Waits.
Omg thank you sobmuch Justin for this cover lesson. I was hoping to learn this song last week but gave up ... but here you are!!! Thxxxx
This is an especially important song for me, thank you so much
I learned about Tom Waits 5 or 6 years ago and am hooked. A friend lent me his TW albums a few weeks ago and as soon as I heard this song I had to know how to play it. Thanks Justin!
Your lessons are such a joy to follow. I'm a total beginner and your approach and demeanor put me in the mood, in spite my sore fingers. Thank you truly for all your hard work.
Great tutorial, Justin. Nice job on the playin and singin. Thanks!
Thank you for this lesson J! Can you please do lesson on Tom Waits' Martha? I would love to learn that song
thank you Justin. Fingerstyle is my love! Hope you will do many more fingerstyles in the future. Thank you so much for being a part of my guitar process. Take care. Max
Thank you, Justin.
You're welcome. Cheers 😊

Great lesson of a great song. Thank you.👍
Tom’s melodic sense went off on a bunch of different tangents but early on he wrote some extremely beautiful songs.
You are such a great teacher, love the fingerstyle lessons you upload, like this one, Jolene by Dolly Parton and the fantastic lesson for Road Trippin by Red Hot Chili Peppers.
If you like Bob Dylan, maybe Don't think twice, it's all right would be a marvelous lesson some time in the future.
IIRC Justin gave up on Dylan lessons because the Dylan people are over-zealous when it comes to 'copyright infringement' notices. A real shame, there are loads of Dylan songs I'd love to learn with Justin's accuracy.
Nicely done.
Yeeees! :D Thanks Justin. Any chance for more Tom Waits songs?
Thank you so much for this lesson!
Hey Justin, could we get some ELO lessons ? Some great classics there. Perhaps turn to stone or Mr Blue sky ?
Thank you for the lesson! It would be awesome if you could teach us how to play "I want you". Its another beautiful song by Tom Waits and i don't really see any other tutorials for it on the internet.
Thanks so much - this tutorial helped me so much with a piece I was struggling with after checking out Guitar Tabs.
And I c that I don't f'in g with c. Lol, love it. @8:00
LOL i was lookin for someone to comment on this
Loved your singing, you say it's bad,but that was good in my opinion.C was F ing G etc had me in hysterics!😂.Great lesson.
Can you please make a lesson for Gun Street Girl by Tom Waits (it's on Rain Dogs)
You're style is the best Justin!
Thank you Justin. You have helped me learn some of my favorite song.
Sounds like a lovely tune, you really do it justice,
Justin,
Any chance of getting a Big Star Thirteen finger style lesson?
hey Justin please do a tutorial for Classical Gas
Ashish Kadam If you haven't seen it before, check out Tommy Immanuel's version of Class' Gas. The guy is stupid talented with a flair for using a guitar like an Eskimo uses a whale; no part is wasted. He also has an idependent suspension thumb/fingers. I have got to learn how they learn to do that!
Dude I love this hipster song. You are the best. Can you do a thorough tutorial of Sublime - Mary ?

Great job , thanks for the lesson. I loved it. The capo works well for the version "Early years vol2". The same chord progression works for the version in the album "Closing time". I found easier to do the F/G and G9 using my thumb.
Thank you so much for this lesson. I love TW and I've been struggling to get this from the BSB.
I love this song. I enjoy learning new picking patterns and im looking forward to get this one under under my nails. Speaking of picking patterns, If you have a few minutes, check out a song called Troubles What Your In, by Fink. I would really love some practice work that could help my digits learn to do the "thumb/finger independent suspension" thing. Any suggestions?
Hi Justin. Could you please make a cover for this song? Your vocal here is so good beside the acoustic playing!
1. I love your videos. You've taught me a ton of music.
2. It's taken me forever to place, but you look like a cross between Norm MacDonald and Brian Fallon from The Gaslight Anthem. Lemme know your thoughts.
3. There's an american primitive style folk guitarist named William Tyler. If you ever did a lesson on one of his songs, that'd make me super happy :)
Awesome man, I've ben waiting for this one. Such a great song.
Totally fantastic! This song has been on my list for five years. Will have to give it a shot soon. Would love to change the lyrics a bit and play this at my daughter's wedding some day. THANKS!
Wow you teach really well. Thanks!
Great job! Your videos are so clear and helpful.
Good as always....thanks!
Very beautiful, Justin!
Great lesson this Justin. Well explained and another technique to my arsenal. I can now hopefully move on to James Taylor’s stuff as it sound like a similar technique which I’ve always struggled to achieve
You're a good guy Justin
Thanks Justin.. excellent!
Outstanding. Really a great job.
Thanks for posting.
Hey Justin great videos thank you I understand from an earlier video of yours that you used to be in a Rolling Stones cover band it would be great if you could give a lesson on Can't You Hear Me Knocking classic intro and great ending guitar I'm sure you would be great in teaching it thanks
Fantastic
Could you please teach the kirk doodle because literally no one has done it and I really want to learn it and its such a cool little riff
I have a couple of Tom Waits sheet music collections and have learnt maybe a dozen songs for the piano, but I always steered clear of trying guitar adaptations because it seemed clear to me that Waits composed the songs on the piano without thought for the complexities of his chords when translated to the guitar (his love of keys such as F , F#, C# and his not infrequent modulations by, say, half a tone up to four times in a song are more evidence of this).
So, hat tip for producing a guitar version, which I will certainly give a go! Keenly anticipating your version of Christmas Card From A Hooker in Minneapolis. :-)
The original is on guitar
Yes, sorry, I am aware of that (have all of his albums). But I am sure that Waits *composes* on piano. And I suspect that he did with this one as well.
I'd add that these chords seem (to me) much more "natural" on piano. But maybe that's just me because I learnt piano first.
Indeed, it is interesting to compare the version performed live on "The Dime Store Novels" with (I think) the later recorded version on "Closing Time".
I guess you'd have to ask TW. Pretty much the rest of the album is on piano. Maybe he preferred it on guitar.
That was absolutely beautiful🥰
Nice, thanks!
great cover and lesson
Brilliant vid. Thanks man. You got a new Subscriber :)
Fly flt the butterfly
Don’t understand the dislikes, the man teaches a beautiful song, does a masterful job of teaching and some soreheads don’t like it?

Any chance of maybe doing 'Old Shoes (and picture postcards)'?
dont f your beer.. thats just plain wrong :p. Awesome tutorial. Was hoping you would make this one.. Now i just need Ol' 55 and im golden lol
Hmm everyone else has this in C but you've got it in D. Did you transpose it so you could sing it higher instead of in Tom's gravelly baritone?
It is the chord 'shapes' that are the thing. The capo makes the whole thing movable to raise the key up from open position key of C, to fret 2 key of D as here, and beyond. Cheers 😊 | Richard_close2u | JustinGuitar Official Guide & Approved Teacher www.justinguitar.com
@@JustinGuitarSongs Same chord voicing, yes. But I do think it's a bit misleading to teach it in the key of D when the original version is in C. I notice a lot of guitar teachers have this, "Whatever key feels right" view to teaching songs which I don't quite understand. Seems to me it should always start with the actual original key and if people decide to play around with it, they can.
can you do parkers band by steely dan
Why the heck is there always 1 dislike when you uplaod a video?
