Outdoor receptacles should be dedicated lines to the panel not looped in with interior receptacles

Glad you enjoyed it! I have many videos that should be of interest to you. Check them out. Thanks!
I need to get one of them covers for long term cord coverage. Years back I had added a 20 amp GFCI outlet to an existing outdoor box and ran a dedicated 20 amp circuit to it. I use that outlet quite a lot, comes in very handy for air compressor and car starting/charger. Come the holiday seasonal lighting is when I need the quasi permanent plug/cord protection.
A 20 amp outlet is really handy, especially knowing you can plug just about anything into it and with the protection of not getting lit up should a fault occur.
Thanks for watching! :-)

One of the most in detailed how to video , as a female I’m adding an outside receptacle now.
Great to hear Shirley! Be sure to rate thumbs up, and share my YT channel with many others. Thank you
The ground pins were on the top when you took that receptacle off. When re-installing they were on the bottom. Some prefer them on top in case a conductor was to find it's way in between a partially plugged in cord. I'm not sure how likely that is. I hope you don't think I'm nitpicking you over that. I would discover that after putting the last screw in just so I would have to take it all back apart and redo it. Bottom line-I love your videos. Keep them coming please.
Johnny Sokko The pin should be down.

@@electronicsNmore ..I understand
At 14:28 would have like to have seen you hook up the hot and neutral pig tails to the silver and brass terminals on the receptacle .... and at 19:45 although it's pretty clear what you did ... good to know the size of Tapcons and masonry (?) drill bit in order to mount the box ! Thanks for the video.
At 14:28 the black wire was attached to the availalbe brass screw on the side of the receptacle with the black wire. The white wire to the opposite side. Tapcons nothing special. 3/16" size is fine. The bit is included with the concrete screws. Thanks for watching!
Thanks you very much
You're welcome Rob. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this video, it is incredibly detailed! I have a question. The outlet that I am looking to take the power from has four wires (just like this one) but, they are all connected at the back of the outlet by being pushed into the hole. Therefore, the two screws on each side (to connect the white and black respectively) of the outlet are free and no wires attached to them. Instead of making the pigtail connection, could I just connect the white wire to the white side and the black to the black side? Thanks in advanced!
Thanks nice video 🙏

I have been thinking doing exactly what this video shows to add outlets outside of my house for use by electric trimmer, leaf blower, etc... and wondered whether this is OK to do. This video gives me the confirmation.
The video also said GFCI receptacles are required when installed within 6 feet of a sink, bathtub. Outlets in my bathroom are on circuit with GFCI breaker so they are OK. I need to check a few outlets near the sink in the kitchen and the two under the sink (for garbage processor and dish washer). If they are not GFCI, I have to replace the first one in the circuit or simply replace the breaker of this circuit with GFCI breaker.
I've had bad luck with those metal boxes. They're made of zinc, which corrodes. A plastic (ABS) box is a better way to go.
I love the video but if I had the plug out I would have replaced it with a new one but that’s me. Great job I’m planning to do that soon.
It was my friend's house. He didn't want to, because the other 4 in the room wouldn't match. Thanks for watching!
electronicsNmore I guess I didn’t think that through . I would have done the same thing if my friend didn’t want to change the others. You were very clear and explain your video well. Thank you!
Nice video! Nice to see how it's been done in other countries! Big differences with Europe (Belgium).
Hi there. for 220V, you normally have a ground wire, red wire, and black wire, or ground wire along with a blue & brown wire. Basically the same job, but using a different receptacle. :-)
No you don't, I suggest you stop advising people about stuff you know nothing about. The days of red and black wires are long gone and the EU regulations about what you can and cannot do have changed a lot since then.
uK8cvPAq The EU won't be around for long. :-) People are waking up to the fact that corrupt politicians have sold out their nation's sovereignty, and taken away much of their rights/freedoms. Very stupid prople for allowing it to happen. You always have a bad attitude? I was simply stating that the procedure was basically the same.
Funny to read that the media in the US is making up the same b*llsh*t than the EU media does about the US...

On the waterproof box, if you flip it over and hit the two bumps with a hammer it works way quicker than a drill bit.

Hi Doug. Awesome has always. Thank you.

Thanks Bobby!
Well done. I just did this at home. I would just add putty or calking to the hole you made on the inside of the receptacle and the outside one as well. That way the outside receptacle will be waterproof...
Thanks for watching Richard!
Good job , only thing I like to add is when you twist wires and tie them with wire nuts I myself like to seal them with electrical tape just an extra safety but other than that very informative video.
You can do that as an added measure. Thanks for watching!
Adding tape is unnecessary and not a safety measure at all. in fact quite the opposite. if there is ever any arching, sparks or heat build up the tape will melt and can possibly even catch fire. But if you want to burn your house down go right ahead and keep using that tape. Been a master electrician 40+ years but maybe you know more than i do ?
@@gregmartin1757 Seems like an excessively sharp reply to a non-provocative comment. One would think after 40+ years, you could share your knowledge without flaunting it.
Greg Martin nobody asked your opinion btw they call electrical tape for a reason.
@@adofilth he’s not wrong in the sense it can do more harm than good, maybe the way he conveyed it to you coulda been better but non the less if tape melts and catches fire that could be an issue as well as it doesn’t do much to keep the wire nut in place but do you
This was SOOOOOO helpful and clearly explained. Thank you so much. I have one question. It looks like its being installed in the same or similar area i need it.. (garden bed?). Im looking to add another external outlet to plug my exterior landscaping transformer into. Im just a bit worried if the sprinkler hits it when its plugged in since the protector cover will be up. What are your recommendations?

Great video, it cleared so many questions I had. However, I have one more question. I don't have a receptacle in the other side of the wall where I want the outlet. I was wondering if I can do it from a light switch.
That's Tuesday's video! :-) Be sure to watch it. Thanks
I'll be waiting for it. Thank you!!!
Why drill up? If water were to get into the outer box (which is more likely than the inner), it will drain to the inner box? If it were drilled down, that would be less likely. Just curious
To make the outside outlet higher. The wall is concrete block, so water wouldn't find it's way into the room.
If I wanted to add another receptacle on a post across the yard, can I just run a line (in a conduit) and attach it to a GFCI on the side of the house? Also does the post receptacle need to be another GFCI?
Thanks
Hello. As long as that particular branch circuit doesn't have too much of a load on it, you can run the line to the post receptacle using the LOAD side of the GFCI on the side of the house. The post receptacle will also be protected by the GFCI on the side of the house. You don't need another. Thanks for watching!
Start of video; outlet is upside down. I see this in newer houses to indicate a switched outlet or plug. Of course he said that this is an older home.
End of video; outlet is reinstalled upright. 👍😀
Yes, I've seen them do that before to identify which is switch controlled. Thanks for watching!
Both statements are wrong the way the outlet was installed at the beginning is the actual correct way to install duplex recptical. The way you mention is the preferred way. Get code book and read it before you diy any electrical work on you home for your family's sake
There’s always one.
@@hewlettlittle5652 LOL u talk as if you know what you’re saying but if you open up the NEC or CEC there’s no indication of which is the correct orientation of a receptacle. Only exception would be local codes

Nice video but damn, replace that old rusty receptacle! OCD trigger = Level 10 lol.
LOL. It was my friend's house. He was going to replace all of them when he painted the room. Thanks for watching Dave!
@@electronicsNmore Yeah right lol .. yeah I agree with David, you should have replaced it .. your friend won't be replacing it, we all know is not true.
could you do one about adding an input plug like a male plug, for like generators
Theworldofstuff back feeding is dangerous and illegal because if you do it with your main breaker on and possibly shock an linesman electrician. If you wanna backfeed safely (legal in some us states) run some 3 conductor feeder cable to a 2 pole breaker close to the main breaker on the main breaker on the panel you can buy a generator interlock kit that mounts to your panel lid that slides and locks in 2 positions that doesn't allow both breakers to be on the same time (mechanical interlock device) so it is safe to feed from a generator both for you and the linesman worker ik this was posted a year ago lol but if you still need help please do safe work 😀
Great video ..do you have a video on how to check the gfci 15amp from the bathroom...the breaker is on ..the gfci is new and all the line are active what do I need to check from the lines itself (gfci) thank you have a blessed day and be blessed
Make sure you connected the power to the LINE terminals and pressed the reset button.
@@electronicsNmore I did do I need to open the gfci and check the line individually? And turn on the breaker which one is live and off...every outlet is on but the outdoor and the bathroom 15 amps gfci is out..as the breaker is on thanks
I came to read all the expert internet electricians tell an actual electrician what he did wrong.
LOL
Great video. How would I then add another exterior leg from this outlet to the garage? Add pvc pipe and connect to the back?
Thanks...JOn B
Hello there. You'd need to use PVC pipe, and connect the new circuit to the GFCI "Load" screws.
Thanks for the quick response - most appreciated. Assume there is a "special" gfci receptacle...
1st way to isolate on the trip out , never seems to be much room when your working on electrical boxs .
True, many electrical boxes have little space to spare inside. I prefer deep electrical boxes, or a 2-gang metal box with a single plaster ring. Thanks for watching!
I hate that the NEC is still using “grounds” in AC circuits… according to ac/dc theory a ground in an ax circuit is a direct short lol I’ve always been confused by that
Sir, can you give me the name of the clear silicone you used? I also want to confirm that a 15 amp circuit requires a 14-3 wire. Thx
@@CarlosGarcia-ls4hn 14-2 for a 15A receptacle. You can pick up a squeeze tube of clear silicone adhesive sealant at Walmart
Great video! If you were to connect another outside outlet to that one by running pipe to the next outlet, how would you do it?
You'd connect the additional outlet to the terminals marked "LOAD". The extra receptacle would be protected by the GFCI. Use ENMT( 1/2" Gray PVC pipe) and a waterproof plastic electrical box w/cover. Position the electrical box 1' above the ground, and secure the vertical PVC pipe leading to the receptacle, to a strong metal rod or pressure treated wooden stake. Secure the PVC pipe going down the wall with pipe straps. Thanks for watching! Be sure to rate thumbs up and share the video link.
@@electronicsNmore hello. I bought ultratite non metallic liquidtight kit. Would this work or should I use the pvc as you suggested to the commenter above? I wanted an easy solution, something I could easily bend.
What about the pigtail wires that you spliced with the other two white and two black wires, to which you then screwed a red cap on. The other ends of the pigtail wires you then made a loop on the ends, yet I didn't see you connect those to anything, and then you tucked everytning in and put the cover back on and then went to the outside area. So the pigtail wires that you made loops on are just free in there, not attached to anything?
Hi Lori. No, the pigtail wires connect to each side of the receptacle. Black wire to HOT(Brass Screw) and white wire to NEUTRAL(silver screw). Thanks for watching!
Make sure you are getting WR (Weather Rated) GFCI Receptacles.
Because the weatherproof cover does an excellent job protecting the GFCI, a normal GFCI is sufficient. Thanks for watching!
K H it actually stands for “weather resistant”
electronicsNmore he’s actually right, weather resistant receptacles are required in this application. Nice video though
Do you have to get a permit to install and exterior receptacle?
It depends where you live. I know people that called up electrical contractors that did as shown with no permit, but usually you'd require one. Thanks for watching!
Does the wire have to go through conduit if going through block or concrete? Thanks
If using UF cable, no, but refer to your local electrical codes. Thanks
electronicsNmore it doesn’t even need to be UF cable it it’s running through block. You can actually fish indoor romex through the voids in block and be code compliant. In this case, UF would be required because that outdoor electrical box is considered a wet location. Again, good video. I’d do it the same way as you did.
Can i tap into that outlet to run wires for another outlet farther away?
Yes, as long as you don't exceed the ampacity of the circuit breaker, and you use the correct size wire.
At about 14:04 into your video you showed white and black short wires with loops in them but did not show what you connected them to before you pushed the recepticle back into wall.
I explained. The black wire with the loop goes to the unused BRASS color screw on the receptacle, and the white wire to the silver screw on the opposite side.
👍👍👍👍👍💚
Glad you liked the video!
Why can't you use a switched outlet for outside? Code reference?
Great video ,but he kept that very old and scary looking painted outlet lol...on the inside ...
Hi, cannot find any videos on how to add an outdoor plug from an existing OUTDOOR plug. Tks
Where is the outdoor plug located? On a wall or on a pipe from the ground?
This GFCI didn't give you any box clearance problems with it's ground screw?
No
@@electronicsNmore I ended up just hammering down on that box plate a little bit.
