Folks thought the early Air Forces in WWI were a joke until the pilots started carrying shotguns and grenades, then it happened again in the navies in early WWII when battleships were afraid to hit the open seas without the protection of an aircraft carrier and were relegated to essentially shore bombardment. let me make it simple, they protect our telecommunications which is critical to our security and our quality of life. Anything that requires transferring data over a cable or satellite is what they monitor and defend. The air force used to do this but given the importance of telecommunication infrastructure it required a dedicated branch. And going by this video it looks like they rolled some other responsibilities into the space force. Missile defense is no joke, hell they are basically a modern version of NORAD.
They need to be up in space, just for the sense of immersion alone. In the near future they will be operating the Death Star and Gundam mobile suits/mechs.
At first I was confused as to why they formed it too early, like "wait we haven't even made contact with the covenant, the flood, the xenomorphs, the eldar, the Tyranids, the Orks, the dark eldar, the T'au, the Vulcans, the Klingons etc yet"

When the Air Force was in charge of the SIBRS system I was in JTAGS in the Army. JTAGS use both the SIBRS sattalites and DSP sattlites and have a crew of only 3 Soldiers forward deployed in combat theatre pulling the same mission as the SIBRS crew of 35 Airmen. The ammount of time the crew of 35 Airmen consistently incorrectly identified missiles was astonishing. They would consitently label SRBM's as MRBM's all the time. It was quite pathetic. The missile warning center would consistently ring us up cause the 4 JTAGS Sites would label a missile and SIBRS would label it completly different. It's is a pretty big deal when 2 JTAGS sites label a possible threat as an SRBM comming out of North Korea that is gonna impact in the ocean but SIBRS is saying they launched an ICBM with a projected impact on the west coast.

It would be less confusing if it was called Space Guard like Coast Guard instead of Space Force. They basically guard Space domain. They are not an offensive force. I see as more and more civilian companies launch into space and manned space missions become common, Sace Force/Space Guard may also provide a Search and rescue serice like the Coast Guard and maybe an interdiction of illegal substances too (Though I dont think anything is illegal in space yet)

As a current member of the space force looking at separating (trying to get something more stable for family life), this is VERY true. Space Force experience makes you extremely hirable to hundreds of companies that will pay well above 6 figures as long as you're semi-competent. I'm a year out, and I've already had a multitude of different companies messaging me on LinkedIn trying to hire me. If you have anyone who's debating it, push them into it ASAP, and make sure they go officer. I will say though, the amount of people trying to get in is insane. I don't think the Space Force will have trouble with recruitment anytime in the next several decades. It's tiny, between 10,000 and 20,000 personnel, with limited jobs. They'll fill their lower ranks, but may struggle maintaining higher leadership positions.
@@lawrencebello6177 I went officer so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I don't believe the Space Force has posted ASVAB score requirements for careers yet. If you have a bachelors, you could go the officer route. Space Force officers tend to be utilized in operational roles and only go managerial after 4-10 years. Very atypical compared to other branches. You also get paid 3X as much

I feel like people don't understand the newest branch, but also don't understand the reason. it is better to have 2 hands on something them 30 hands on something. if you can't understand the reason why this branch was made then you have not looked at the USA history. Branches were created for a reason.

Folks thought the early Air Forces in WWI were a joke until the pilots started carrying shotguns and grenades, then it happened again in the navies in early WWII when battleships were afraid to hit the open seas without the protection of an aircraft carrier and were relegated to essentially shore bombardment. Once one satellite drops that first tungsten telephone pole on a target, or that first Dragon capsule full of Space Force techs steals an opponent's satellite. it's game on. This doesn't even get into the Luna shenanigans that are bound to start. Right now we are essentially just in the recon phase of the branch.

let me make it simple, they protect our telecommunications which is critical to our security and our quality of life.
They should be called "satellite and missile systems" force.
They need to be up in space, just for the sense of immersion alone. In the near future they will be operating the Death Star and Gundam mobile suits/mechs.

Yes. I remember there is an animated series during the 90s, "Starcom: The United States Space Force". It is now a real thing.
I think the Space Force needs their own style of uniforms. Seems silly to wear camo at a domestic base. This should be the branch of the future, so they should look futuristic. I know their dress uniforms look like the ones from BSG, but their everyday ones should be coveralls or something. Really lean into the entire future fantasy. There's nothing wrong with having function AND form.
they could wear jumpsuits kind of like a fighter pilot or an astronaut.
@@edgeldine3499 I don't think it should be a jumpsuit but I think it should be made to be compatible with potential future US military space suits. Flexible and tight fit, sort of like a jumpsuit.

they should be issued uniforms that look like Levi's denim overalls, an off white t-shirt and a bass pro shop hat so as to blend in with the local population.
Sounds like the Space Force consists of the lion's share of the STEM geeks in the U.S. Military, who use tech rather than conventional firepower to fight.

Agreed. Space Guard sounds legitimate, serious, and necessary. Space Force sounds exactly like Steve Carell’s TV series combined with buzz lightyear. I wish they put more thought into a proper name. Space Defense? Space Defense Corp? Astro Defense Force? Orbital Defense Corp? Maybe a name that includes the name satellite or technology in it? Something. I’m going to assume retaining personnel in the Space Force will very difficult past the first contract. Most of these jobs will pay very very well in the civilian sector. Can’t imagine it’s a very hard decision to reenlist or not.

However, the Air Force requires a General score of 64 minimum. If you have a bachelors, you could go the officer route. Space Force officers tend to be utilized in operational roles and only go managerial after 4-10 years. Very atypical compared to other branches. You also get paid 3X as much

It’s the ONLY mission that base has had since 2000 and it was still operating in 2013. The CATM & K-9 Kennels for RAF Lakenheath & RAF Mildenhall were built there in late 90’s to justify keeping it open sense the DSTS are unique assets.

No satellites mean no WiFi and no GPS. The US government realized that it needed to be protected and it also offers another line of defense in cybersecurity
Here is the issue with some of your comments. it was most branches "job" to handle the issues. now it is only one branch. no matter what branch it is why would anyone downgrade any of the branches. Jw, I may be wrong. so, let's say instead of 20 different people, it's just 5 handling an issue. Space Force was formed to identify and catch, or shall I say take the stress off the other branches. I feel like people don't understand the newest branch, but also don't understand the reason. it is better to have 2 hands on something them 30 hands on something. if you can't understand the reason why this branch was made then you have not looked at the USA history. Branches were created for a reason.
At first I questioned the necessity of a Space Force, but after speaking with a member of the command I understand why it was created.
