  • Come along on a full day of eating through beautiful Zagreb, Croatia. This incredible city has such a unique food culture, built upon a wealth of history. Today we sip coffee at a trendy specialty coffee shop in the center city. We then bike out to a local favorite for Burek, a staple Croatian street food. We Bike back into the center for Ficlek, which are Croatian small plates - think tapas! We take the street cars out to the mountainside for outdoor lamb on a spit at 100 year old legendary restaurant - Okrugljak.

My Grandmother was born and raised in Lokve Croatia. She moved to Calumet MI carring my Mom in 1932. When my parents and I would vist Grandma she made Lamb with roasted potatoes and carrots. It was heaven. When ever I see lamb being served in a restaurant that will always be my to go to dinner.

I was born in Zagreb, thank you for speaking so nicely about my city, what you ate is not 10% of what you could eat in the city and its surroundings, and barely 1% of the offer in the whole of Croatia

I'm glad you discovered traditional dishes. We say you won't get sick if you eat that kind of breakfast. The cracklings are cooked, as you indicated, and then squeezed to drain the fat. Someone also likes unsqueezed cracklings.

I'm glad you've tried some of less known meals of Croatia. We are actually having some of the best salami/dried meats and cheeses in the world. Same as vines and strong alcohols.

It has been a delight to enjoy dishes unique to Croatia! And I have been fortunate enough to try the salami, hard cheeses, wines, Pelinkovac, and pršut during our time here. I'm a huge fan!! 💓🇭🇷

The bread you tasted at Okrugljak (btw, one of the best restaurants in Zagreb) was not brushed with butter and thus yellow, but it was yellow because it was made of corn. It is a type of bread very different from what you can find in the US (I know as I live in LA), as it's not sweet. Corn bread that you had is a delicacy, I'm yet to find anything that comes close to it. And last, Croatians do not dip or brush butter on their bread, if anything then olive oil.

We Bosnians call burek a pie...cheese pie, apple pie, vegetable pie, potato pie,čvarci pie, meat pie...etc...probably Turks copied from us how to make it,when they invaded Bosnian Kingdom in medieval century...just like they copied Roman spa from east Romans...it is well known, that Turks didn't bring anything specific with them, but they took alot of things and customs from nations which they conquered or were in a war with them, wheb they invaded Europe...there was more then a hundred year war between us Croats and Turks, especially us Bosnians fought them hard,we were the 1st ones to fight them...
