He seemed a better player in the PL games because Arsenal were clearly a better team than 95 percent of PL teams, when your teammates dominate a game it's much easier to look good. Even the way he moves and runs on the pitch is ridiculous, looks robotic and talentless.

He's not been played as a defensive midfielder he's been played in a double pivot with Trent and last game mainoo, there are no defensive midfielders for England the fact that he ends up in a defensive position when we go ahead in matches is because the whole of the team drops too deep and he's forced into that position.

@@macca1626 his game is breaking up play and protecting the back line. Which is what he does best. He’s better than most players at exactly that. He’s quality so he can do other things well too, but his primary function is a defensive mid. Remember no one has been able to say Arsenal over paid on the 100 mil price tag and defensively England have been pretty solid.

But no, drop Rice for Mainoo. I too look forward to even less attacking (is that even possible?) performances from England. Is Rice perfect? No, but he is played as a DM and if you go and actually watch the last four games, he is there to fix the mistakes other players have made. If you don't want Rice in there, fine, but who is doing his job? People keep saying 'he should pass forward more' but he is a 'Number 6' not a 'Number 8'. Mainoo's job is to do that. Gallagher's job is to do that. TAA's job is to do that. Rice is there to retrieve and recycle. If you want him to do what he does for Arsenal, make him a No.8 and let him attack and let somebody else do the boring and thankless task of retrieving possession when the likes of Foden lose it, or Guehi slips, or Trippier misplaces a pass. When Southgate says 'no replacement for Phillips' he meant a true No.6. Rice may have been bought by Arteta as such but he proved himself much better as a No.8, and now all his preferences are tempered as he does the 'boring' job. So, if you want that, somebody else has to do it, as I said and people will then moan he isn't doing X Y Z. Of course, you could just plain argue nobody does defensive midfield work and you just play attacking mids and just hope the defence deals with it....
