Doesn't cutting the corners ruin the waterproofing of the membrane? Why not just fold and overlap the corners?

No, with the inside corners correctly installed a watertight seal can be achieved. We recommend cutting the corners instead of folding to ensure once the wall tile is installed it will be able to sit vertically without obstruction.
