Brand New Shimano SpeedMaster 16ii - What the hell is that sound?

- [PLEASE SUBSCRIBE] Got this brand spanking new Shimano salt water reel right out of the box and its making this obnoxious sound when I reel. Let's break it down and see what the hell is going on! Hint: We figure it out in the video so if you already know just know we know too!

better than discovery channel! just a quick note on the spare drag handle: it not same as the one fitted it has a wider range of drag at light pressure and was design for fishing sailfish. It was originally designed and an option to purchase for talicas until they sold Specific Sailfish set up talicas, Thanks for the video

My new SM II 12 was also a bit rough and noisy out the box. I replaced the pinion bearing (TGT 2565) as well as two bushings with bearings in the handle/main gear (TGT 2551, 2581). Reel seems to be a lot smoother now. I used HPR bearings from EBay. I could have returned reel to Shimano but they would have only replaced the pinion bearing. Cost about $35.
Interesting. My stock bearings were fine. Just noisy grease with all the bubbles.
Every one I opened up in bass pro did the same thing. The clerk and myself were trying to figure it out.

My spool will NOT come off of the gear housing side. It pulled apart like your did with the spool attached but spool will not pull off. I unscrewed the drag lever and still stuck. Im lost. Trying everything to get is apart to get to gears and nothing will work. Anyone have this issue?
I have not had this issue. Are you still having issues? Has your reel seen a lot of action on the salt water already?
So what are your thoughts on the quality of this reel? I’m looking at a 12 or 16 for YFT

@@fishroper it did not have the spare drag lever. Should they come boxed with the spare drag lever?
Mine did but honestly I doubt you’ll ever need it. If my plastic one breaks I won’t use the spare. I’d upgrade to the aluminum Talica one that is identical
@@fishroper interesting thanks. Are you based in Australia? Also, what size Talica model would have the same gear lever for the SM8?
It's grease being forced between the gear teeth, will go away with some use.

I got a 12ii that had the exact same sound out of the box so it’s normal. Will probably go away with use on the water.

Whats the difference between Talica?
The Talica is reportedly a bit smoother but with a nicer (yet les durable) finish. Talica really isn't worth the money imo.
perfectly normal for these reels. as you fish it it will quiet up
