I do also like A Hole In the World by AnnaliseMichel, but ymmv on that one, as it’s an ABO. A very long, very plotty ABO which serves as an analogy for civil rights fights. Maybe I like it so much because I feel it transcends the genre- and I’m usually not a fan of ABO at all. Seriously, this is the only one I liked, it usually does not appeal to me in the slightest. My problem is that even if it is canon romantic, so what? That doesn't erase the 10+ years of explicit queerbaiting. It doesn't make it retroactively okay just because the last three episodes of the series had a canon romance.
@@a.3032 Even if the writers had ended the show with a kiss, it wouldn't have erased over a decade of "lol no homo" jokes and constantly poking fun at the fanbase for being delusional fangirls who made the mistake of latching onto the romantic parallels that _they wrote_ . Even if the show had ended with Dean reciprocating, it wouldn't have felt genuine. It would have felt like scraps. I'm late but it's liek trying to redeem a character in a show with "one good act." One good act or one sacrifice does not redeem a character that has done so many horrible things for years and years. Castiel can't just have Joe Smoe as his vessel without it a) being in the right bloodline and b) having the person choose to become an angelic vessel. And if I am remembering correctly Claire did have a stint as Castiel's vessel during the Jimmy Novak is back episode. It's been a couple years since I've been in the SPN fandom. Claire being a vessel is one thing. Like that'd be her choice. But endgame Destiel with Claire as a vessel is gross for so many reasons. It's been theorized for many years that Claire may become Castiel's "permanent" vessel, or even a temporary one like a few episodes, but in the current canon, I doubt that Claire would be chill with that or that'd they pull that stunt in the last two episodes. Adding Destiel into that mix would be a disservice to all characters involved.

The empty isn't super Hell. Its literally what it's name suggests, empty. It's where angels and demons go when they die and sleep forever. Also, Cas is neither gay nor straight since the character is neither male or female. Cas is an angel and doesnt have a gender. The character of Dean is straight. That is whats canon. It would be wrong to change it now just for the sake of being pc. Also Jensen Ackles isn't homophobic. He is very supportive of his gay aunt and if I was him I would be tired of fans of pushing something on my character that he just wasn't.
Yeah, because Cas isn’t gay, he never once seemed like he was in love with Dean before he said that, so why should it suddenly be romantic when there were no lead up to it?
At first I thought Jensen's acting was really off, with Misha acting his heart out and Dean looking like 😐. But after mulling it over, I think the editing was the problem. Jensen's good with nuanced emotion. The way they block in the scene is amateurly back-and-forth in a way that is unusual for other Destiel moments that often have them on screen at the same time - to show the two in relation to each other, in close quarters and moving with each other. This scene was shot and edited in a way that cancelled out the chemistry these two have with each other. The first time within the confession we see them on screen together (I think) is when Dean turns around to see the black goo thing appear behind him. There is so little intimacy portrayed in this scene that it fails to deliver true romantic tension.

It's implied that he hooks up with some dude at the bar who looks just like Dean, and his love for Dean is completely ignored to play into the "gay people are promiscuous and can't commit" trope. Homophobia bingo!
Here an better idea Dean just saying no to cas then reveal in the aftermass that apparently a lot of people find cas attractive so castiel has options and just cause one person doesen't wanna date you doesen't mean nobody does and just leave the message to carry on wayward angel carry on then leaving it open ended on Dean looking to play matchmaker with cas and there certainly won't be any Dean lookalikes. The only reason I semi keep up with the show (I’ve watched the first maybe third of this season but that’s it so far), is so I can understand the different points at which different fics jump off. That’s pretty much it at this point.
THE THING IS the most tension between Cas and Dean was in those early seasons. At this point in the show we've gotten the same confession about a hundred other times that were just as emotionally poignant. Dean grieves for Cas, Cas comes back to save him, and then they get emotionally distant again because the Winchesters do not understand communication. Cas has basically moved on at this point, in that "I will always love you but have enough self respect to admit I deserve better" way. It's tragic, really. Jack, his surrogate son, is more important to him than Dean now. Their love for each other reciprocated and justified and Jack would never do what Dean has done to Cas. Basically what I'm trying to say is Cas gave up on destiel 2 seasons ago and im mad this is where they took it.

Jack is a much better character as wellas lucifers spawn choosing cas as dad in his womb, and being as akward, actor nails it. Its a better thought out and build up story honestly, thats why she is elsewhere and jack is there. He even came back from the dead already.

Exactly. I stopped shipping Destiel in canon context because they are not healthy in the last few season, and I can't see much redemption either without having to change up Dean how he is completely. I think Deans 'brokeness' and moral ambuigity is worth to be there on itself (over Destiel) so I don't demand for this to change. But also, Castiel was really, really depressed and I've grown so angry about how he was used by the Winchesters and what they did with the character... and also what they did with Dean and Sam, I'm not really invested anymore. But Destiel is tragic in canon. So tragic that I just want them to live their own lives apart from each other and find happiness. It's just too sad; what basically happened, assuming Destiel, is that Dean was such a coward about his feelings and had so much internalized homophobia that he began to let it out on Cas, who suffered as a result. That's some real life shit tbh

The worst thing is reading everywhere that it became canon and then actually watching the scene and it's not canon. Cas confesed but Dean didn't reciprocate. That scene is just awful.
regarding Dean’s silence, people who have watched the show know that Dean in general doesn’t usually talk about his emotions very openly. he keeps things bottled up and only lets them out when he’s alone (hence why he cried at the end). when Cas confessed Dean’s “don’t do this Cas” meant don’t sacrifice yourself again. this isn’t the first time he has seen Cas die, Cas has died a total of 6 times and it never gets easier for Dean. with everyone that happens ofc he’s going to be shocked, Dean has always had a problem with his self hatred, hearing someone actually say that they love him on a romantic level was a huge shock for him. if Cas wasn’t about to die i would say dean would probably runaway and think about his feelings for Cas and then reveal them to him but there wasn’t time for him here so he just couldn’t say anything.
Yeah I'm thinking the same, Dean is character who processing emotions very slowly and Cas's confession was just overwhelming for him. Cas wanted to say so much to Dean in that one moment because he knew he will never see him again. There is not only love confession. When he said "I know how you see yourself, Dean" Cas said everything Dean needed to hear like: you are not broken, anger is not who you are, everything you are doing is for love. He even mention Dean's father, how he was raising Sam from a child, fighting for this world. Cas literally said "you are the most caring, selfless human being" It was not just the "I love you" sentence all that speech was so full of love no one probably shown Dean so much love before. I think in another situation, without all that "he's gonna die" stuff, Dean's reation would not be so much different, I think he would just stand still with tears in his eyes, moving his lips soundless until Cas began to back away and Dean would stop him. It's not only about writers, characters are also actors, fans and a lot of things, there is also a story and in story, let's remember, Dean was never with a man (probably never even kissed one) so even If he loved Cas back, there was also: he is in male vessel (It's nothing to do with homophobia, just coming out even to yourself is not always easy), he is an angel (let's remember it was also some kind of issue), he is my best friend for years (show me a person who find that situation simple), he is about to die again but this time for real... If Dean would just say "I love you too" It would be kinda unrealistic and out of character. Still I hope in heaven they are cuddling on the couch, eating bacon and watching old western movies (and having great sex~)
@@MiIk0Tea this may be true but it still makes for a really unsatisfying scene. Like if they didn't want to make Dean act out of character, they could have had this confession happen way earlier in the season or show so that Dean had actual time to figure out his feelings or respond in a meaningful way, maybe even have him grow more comfortable with expressing them or coming to terms with liking men specifically Castiel. Instead they gave us a confession in the literal second to last episode and had the character confessing die and never return. That is bad writing and screwing over the community they are supposedly trying to represent no matter how you look at it. Like don't write a love confession of long shipped characters at the literal end of a show, but especially do not do this if one of the characters is canonically bad at expressing their feelings. Because then you get one person pouring their heart and the other looking like 🗿

Yeah. And I think that the previous episode definitely pushed it in the Cas would do absolutely anything for Dean (as Chuck said that Cas and Dean's connection was not part of his plan). So I'm really hoping that with Dean being so broken up by it they'll bring Cas back and Dean might have a chance of happiness.

They (the writers) also deliberately left it open to interpretation so that they could do what they usually do and claim that the fans are insane for interpreting a "platonic" 'I love you' as romantic. I've never seen the series, but I a'm vaguely aware of the season and the way that the showrunners interact with their audience (particuarly their... sizeable? majority?! lgbt audience) and I'm just. You guys deserve better as fans.
That wouldn't even make any sense. Dean and Cas have been besties for years and years. There's no reason that saying "I love you" to Dean in a platonic context would be Castiel's *happiest* moment when their platonic love for each other has been established throughout the past decade. You might as well have his happy come from a hamburger for all the emotional payoff that would give. Not saying that's not what there gonna do, though, cuz it obviously is.
Misha Collins actually called it a "homosexual love confession" and the rest of the cast were joking about destiel, so it was definitely meant to be romantic.

I think Dean's reaction was very realistic. But also... there is a sense of, "I've always known this but I don't want to talk about it, especially right now when I cannot process this at all and you are leaving me."

It's literally just putting the minimal amount of payoff in the last 2 episodes so they can continue to milk the queerbaiting until the very end, like "hey you should still buy the whole thing on DVD because look there's like half a gay in there at the end if u squint"
The worst ending I can think of: They realize the only way to save Castiel is to erase his moment of true happiness. However, to make sure he doesn't just confesses his love again, they also make him forget his love for Dean. Then the cast turns to the camera and they say: "Remember kids, it's better for your homosexual friends to be unhappy then for them to be in hell." and then the credits roll.
Everyone gets killed on that show though, so it’s not really the trope. What’s more there really is no traditional death on the show. Characters come back from the beyond all the time.

Cas didn't just list people he cared about equally, he was differentiating. He says "I cared about Sam, I cared about Jack (his adopted son just btw), **but** I cared about the whole WORLD (when he disobeyed Heaven and joined Dean in saving it) BECAUSE OF YOU Dean." Loving Dean is what taught him how to care about anyone. It changed his fundamental nature and enabled him to exert free will, something angels aren't supposed to be able to do.

It's clear that it's romantic because of the line where Castiel says he knows he can't have what he wants + the script of the scene describing that Dean's "unable to reciprocate" (which if this was on a friendship level, would make zero sense) BUT at the same time, they did this scene in a way where general public doesn't have to necessarily pick up on the romantic vibe and could just say they're really good friends. I guess, as you said, we're gonna see if it's gonna be EXPLICITLY stated that Castiel feels/felt something romantic towards Dean in the remaining two episodes.
It's explicit though. Yes, people can skip the "want but can't have" line if they want, but they can't find a platonic explanation for it. I'm not saying it was perfect. But it was explicit.

In discussions for next episode, majority of people think that it was just brotherly cause it can be read that way if you're not paying attention to every single word and sentence. It wasn't clear enough, Castiel could have just said "I'm in love with you" instead of "I love you" to make it bold, but they didn't do it for a reason.
It was. In three minutes, his best friend told him there was a way out if the trap Dean thinks they put them in, find out that to save Jack Cas had to make a deal, hear all those beautiful things about himself, being told that he was the reason Cas changed, and to be told Cas lives him, all while processing that this was also goodbye speech. Who wouldn't be dumbfounded like that

@@greeneyesgirl467 Jensen is a good actor, check out his scenes in All Hell Breaks Loose. He was directed by the script to react in that way, and also Dean is dealing with childhood trauma, he's the most emotionally constipated dude on Earth.
I mean, I'm a lot less repressed than Dean, and I never had to absorb a similar amount of information in very little time while I was about to die, but let me tell you, when my best friend told me she found me cute (as in, "I think we should be girlfriends") I was dumbfounded and didn't know what to answer. It took me days to understand that she was actually propositioning me. Dean isn't "stone-faced" or anything, he's just completely stunned because there was so much to process, and also you never expect your best friend to tell you "btw I'm in love with you."

As someone who’s been watching this show consistently for a couple of years now... Deans facial expression make sense. All in one day: he failed to kill god and the darkness, everyone he knows is dying, he was so consumed with anger he was willing to sacrifice Jack, he pulled a gun on his own brother, death is trying to kill him and Cas, he all of a sudden learns that Cas made a deal so he’ll die when he’s truly happy, and then cas confesses his love for Dean and dies a couple of seconds after. Jensen did a wonderful job acting shocked and in disbelief

"Dean can't reciprocate" can mean different things in this scene. It can mean he doesn't have time to reciprocate. It could mean Dean.exe is rebooting because he is overwhelmed with death and hell knocking on the door and Cas confessing his love and he can't get words out. It could mean Cas pushes him away before there is time. Legitimately, we won't know what this means until the last episodes. Did he say, "Cas I dont see you that way"? No. He said "Cas (looks like he's about to say "Cas I.." before he's interrupted) and basically pleaded for Cas not to sacrifice himself.
i think the thing that's so funny about this is that every single person i've seen talking about it (and myself!) are people who used to be into spn but went off it YEARS ago, for a variety of reasons but a lot of people because "well, they're just gonna queerbait". so by doing this...thing...all they've achieved is making a bunch of people who don't care about the show any more come back, see this bizarre scene, and go "wow! this is way worse than it just being queerbaity forever!" and it's...the end of the show? incredible.

I'm one of those people. I stopped watching circa season 10, came back for a few episodes between then and now, (300th one, the one where Dean is Michael...), I literally don't see what the big deal is. Supernatural has always been that problematic show what queerbaited and killed your fave female character. And around S9 or 10 it got very clear that there would be no canon destiel. And now we got canon destiel that basically lasted for who knows how long on Cas' part. It was bittersweet but it's better than nothing. Castiel loves Dean! Take the W everyone!
My prediction is that Dean is going to friendzone him, but in the end, sacrifising himself to save everyone who died in this episode, including Castiel. So there will be enough room to speculate if he just wasn't ready to openly accept it. But also, there will be a secret final episode with their wedding. 😆

The show is ridiculous obviously, till now the only reason why I want it to become canon is to prove that the fans were right all along and have been humiliated without a reason. The destiel fandom is full of loving and creative people, they didn't deserve this.

I watched the scene in Spanish, Castiel said "te amo", a phrase used to confess romantic love. We use the words "te quiero" when we mean platonic love.
I personally never cared about this show, never watched it, and I was glad I never did specially after seeing the way lgbt+ shippers were treated... Now, I've recently watched the movie "The Old Guard" (recently released in Netflix, this year) and it's the most beautiful example a movie that goes totally against this horrible trope! Some spoilers, but the MAIN (yeah, not the side one) romantic relationship of the movie are two badass, romantic, immortal, yes IMMORTAL, gays who have loved each other for centuries and it has a scene where one of them declares their love in front of homophobes, and let me say that's singlehandedly THE most beautiful romantic scene I've seen in my life!! Also, Charlize Theron is the boss of the group of immortals who fight for humanitarian causes and she carries an axe around, so also a win for us lesbians. I recommend it with my whole heart, love, gayness and being!!!

I think we've also got to keep in mind that, past S5, this show has been such a random, assorted amalgamation of different writers' ideas, with little to no attention paid to narrative/thematic/character development cohesion. They introduce plot elements which randomly become important or get ignored. The writing has always felt like writers on their own writing islands. So the fact that this confession had no buildup within the season? It's not that out of touch with the general lack of narrative vision going on
fun fact: in the spanish version you can hear Dean's character respond "y yo a ti" to Cas' "i love you", Dean says (translated) "and i you"!!! (just found out today on tumblr, because one of my mutuals was sharing lots of posts about it.)
look, look, LOOK. I stopped caring a while ago and stopped watching last season bc I'm lazy. I could never really hate this show bc it was a special interest, and I cannot hate old special interests, they brought me so much joy. But honestly waking up to do an exam after sleeping 5 hours to see tumblr gone nuts only to fnd out destiel is "cannon" was the funniest way to find out. I did ship it, hell (pff... hell) I still kinda do. This whole thing is ridiculous and feels like a fever dream but it's also hilarious and also kinda sad because there's people out there who think Dean is gonna reciprocate, who think this was good, and I'm afraid to see how hurt they will be when it doesn't pay off, because it's supernatural people. I stopped watching after season 13. When you ask? When Cas died and was taken by the empty. Hmm now why does that sound familiar? And when Cas came back, Dean did absolutely nothing to address his feelings (even though he literally tried to die before Cas came back and was positively giddy when he came back might I add). Don’t be calling me out like that, maybe some of us like torturing ourselves with certain impossibilities 😂
MY TOUGHTS EXACTLY. I haven't been in the fandom for years, but what I've learned, until the characters kiss or say something like "I love you romantically" or "I'm in love with you" you'd better not expect anything. they might still say it's "brotherly love" or some other shit.
Yeah, problem is that Castiel is an angel. Him saying that is just showing how he is different from the other characters. The lore makes that technique not work. Of course Cas loves everyone...he’s a flipping angel.
Even if this is confirmed in show in the final episodes, confirming characters to be gay after 15 years of on and off is still not a great look. A get it in kids shows or shorter shows like she-ra and legend of korra, but there is no doubt that the creators could have made destiel canon years ago if they actually cared to have solid representation.
The difference is that catradora had actual romantic tension that had been built up for 5 seasons, it was written into their backstories and the creator of shera had their relationship planned since the first season. destiel was just rushed and sad.
100% agreed. The way they handled it on Korra was fine for it being a kids show and the time it came out. But a show like this has been on long enough that that shit isn't good enough anymore. They took the coward way out and I fucking hate it.

My only experience with watching this show is when i'd go to the gym and a TV would be on a channel that just does constant reruns of it, so I've watched it on mute with closed captions. I was VERY SHOCKED to hear their actual voices in the show. It's still my least favourite thing about the show outside of the homophobia, queerbaiting, and racism

The script for that scene indicated Dean is “stunned, confused, shocked.” So with that direction, Jensen played the scene exactly as scripted and should get no hate. Any hate is for the writers.
Agree. Dean was not just processing 'I love you' in that split second. He had to process: the danger of Billy at the door, Cas telling him about the deal he made last season , Cas dying AND Cas saying I love you - all this without words in a split second. Dean's reaction was not just re: I love you. If this scene was intended as romantic admission then it should have either been placed in the episode differently or they give Dean more time or less things to process in a split second. In short I cannot fault Jensen's acting in this - I think the problem is the writing and some of the editing.
I think a majority of the hate towards this scene does come from people who haven't seen the show before or who dropped it years ago etc. I appreciate Rowan for at least watching the whole episode but I'll argue that even that is definitely not enough context to really get what they were going for in this scene, especially since the episode doesn't really feature Dean and Cas scenes until the end. Dean, fundamentally, is a guy who buries his emotions, shrugs them off, and refuses to let himself feel too outwardly or obviously to others in his life. He shows love in many ways, but in subtle ways, like making Cas a mixtape or making sure Sam is comfortable. He is barely ever the type to do what Cas does in this episode, who so boldly and upfrontly admit and confess how he's feelings (not just in regards to love but with *anything* too 'deep' for him: grief, trauma, regret, anxiety, his suicidal tendencies, etc). A good episode to watch would be 15x09, written by the same writer of 15x18, where Dean and Cas get separated in Purgatory and, in a moment of vulnerability, Dean is alone and prays to Cas in a very introspective monologue about his feelings and his emotional issues. (In fact, Dean's emotional and anger issues have been a defining trait of his, and especially one that they've very intentionally amplified this season as he's gotten more and more manipulated. Part of the intention of Cas' speech is to remind Dean of who he is besides his anger and rage.) It was only when Dean was alone, and when he didn't even know if Cas could hear him, that he could even begin to open up about the way he feels. He is the type of character who never knows how to process his emotions immediately, it can take him a couple scenes, or the whole season (on avg. it's a few episodes) before he really can be upfront with the way he feels about something. As you can see in the last scene of the episode, Dean is just sitting alone by himself, probably regretting all the things he didn't get to say, since he didn't even get a chance to say goodbye. And that's another thing about this scene, it is so fleeting for Dean. One moment, he's in a predicament with his ride-or-die, and 5 minutes later, Cas has sacrificed himself (with no prior discussion), never to be seen again. So the quote from the script, "stunned, confused, shocked" is not just directed at Cas' love confession. In fact, despite it being the main focus of everyone's thinkpieces this week, I'd say that the writers were coming at this scene from a 'death-first, monologue-second' approach in terms of how they prioritised the significance of the scene. They knew they had to kill Cas this season because it had been set up, and they secondarily decided to give him a nice, encompassing, full-circle speech to sum up: his character, how he's grown over the seasons, and saying goodbye to the most important person to him. To Dean, I imagine it would be very in character for him to be looking the way he does because he's literally being told for the first time that, not only has his friend made this deal for his life, but also that he's taking it up immediately and that he's about to die in front of him. *That* would be where a majority of the shock comes from. That's why Dean's first question is to be asking "why does this sound like a goodbye", because that's probably the main part for him to be wrapping his mind around. It's not gonna take Dean a couple hours before he really thinks back on what Castiel was telling him and understands everything he was told. This is why, fascinating though it is, I don't think it's entirely productive to be viewing this scene or episode through a queer lens, because that's not the primary angle that the writers are thinking about this scene. Also, just personally, as a queer guy, I'd never really identified with these two as some form of gay representation, since I don't think the writers or actors ever presented that intentionally, and that most of destiel's existence comes from a queer projection onto the show by its fans. I mostly just took it in the same way I view Dean's relationship with Sam, that it's a very strong, non-sexual love between them all. (I much prefer to watch Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham's relationship for my gay subtext content since that show is *actually* intentionally coded to be very gay, and is created by a gay man/written by a lgbt group of writers, no less). But, hey, I did appreciate the words "I love you" being spoken in that scene. As I said, romantic or not, that's a love that has always been there, and it was a good way to send off the character. I just really refute anyone saying that it was a "one-sided confession" or that Dean doesn't feel anything, or that Jensen is somehow all-of-a-sudden discriminatory because his face wasn't teary-eyed enough for some people.

I keep seeing people spitting out hatred or frustration over this one scene. But if people are seeing just one scene out of context, with no knowledge of everything else that has been happening in the show, they can't claim to understand everything that was happening in that scene. Some of us were deeply affected on a personal level by not only that scene, but everything in the show that led up to. Without intentionally paraphrasing Castiel, I have to say I was changed for the better by this show (and the scene in question, in particular), and no one will ever be able to take that away from me.

My dad used to watch supernatural and thought it was over years ago. So I went to him and my mom and in the vaguest terms I could I said "People are blowing up over the last season of Supernatural. I won't spoil anything but I will say this. The fans are like "GAY! GAYYY!!" " And my mom gave me the most confused expression ever. One can easily chalk Jensen's reaction as being canon to Dean's character-Dean is the emobidment of "big tough guy with heart of gold" and hates getting overly emotional especially in front of other people. He's been through some shit. Makes sense. So for someone he's been so close with his entire life, telling him they love him, it would kind be like a "wtf how to do react" moment for Dean. Dude has the emotional range of a teaspoon. Not saying he doesn't have ANY but....like I said. He's that typical MANLY MAN who wouldn't want to admit to anyone much less himself of being emotionally vulnerable.

I really wasn't in the fandom but one of the "Jensen is homophobic" things looks like it came from a fan bringing along a Meta Essay titled "Spoiler Alert: Dean Winchester is Bisexual" to a signing and Jensen put a question mark next to the title and then just wrote "No." and then signed his name. (Apparently Misha then crossed out the No and wrote Yes is sparkly silver pen so...) I saw the pic on twitter and it punted me back into 2012
To be fair, Jensen as an actor is allowed to have boundaries as to what kinds of scenes he does and doesn't want to play. When he took the job in 2005, there was no hint that any kind of same-sex relationship was in the offing. It's not like Aml Ameen taking the role of Capheus in 'Sense8' and then being shocked that some homoerotic scenes might have to be performed. Did he not pay attention to the series concept?
He can absolutely have boundaries and I don't have any issue with an actor having those stipulated, but having an issue with just the idea is what I found uncomfortable. The signing thing seemed sort of aggressive about it, that's just a fan asking for something to be signed you could just sign it and move on. Plus with the queerbait-y stuff in the show - if he's uncomfortable with that kind of relationship in the role don't hint that it "could" happen if you know it won't for whatever reason, y'know? Like I said though I'm an outsider looking in so I don't know all of the stuff that happened.
The thing no one who doesn’t watch the show is realizing is that they have been like. antagonistic with each other ALL SEASON. In the previous episode Dean was advocating for Jack (who is Castiel’s adopted son basically) to die. Like even if they hadn’t done it in the most homophobic way possible it would’ve been bad. “I know like 12 hours ago you wanted to kill my son, but I’m in love with you.”
I stopped watching in maybe Season 8 or early Season 9, so I definitely didn’t know about this and it makes it even worse somehow, from any perspective. They could have ended it 6 seasons ago and have it be somewhat natural, because that’s when their chemistry was at its finest, but because they’ve stretched this out so long and put so much conflict between them, it just doesn’t seem to flow. From what I’ve heard, Dean doesn’t even seem to deserve Cas’s loyalty anymore, and that hurts.
I buy he cares about him, but love, after all that bitter till really dramatic exes subtexts , this season too, yes its not justied, even with misha, one of the reasons to still watch with jack, they really hae a touching well acted relationship, but romance there, that makes no sense.

I think it's important to note that, and there have been theories, there may be some level of sheer shock on Dean's part and possible internalised homophobia. There's one thing to be an ally but it's another to actually experience these feelings yourself especially given the Winchester's background. He *could* be reciprocating those feelings for while no, he didn't respond, I personally wouldn't know how to respond if my best friend confessed that she was going to die and sacrifice herself because she loved me. It's a sheer shock factor. Ofc it may be entirely platonic and we should be prepared for that but if it's just queer beating and (quite frankly, homophobic if we read into it properly) then the writers won't even be forgiven.
Yeah, I don't actively follow the series, but it's weird to me that so many people go first to bad acting or jensen/dean being homophobic before they go to shock. Also that a lot of people reduce it to "this is how dean reacts when cas says he loves him" like if my crush said that they were going to die as soon as they said something that made them truely happy and then told me they loved me. I would be mostly in shock and have a pretty similar reaction. having strong conflicting emotions and not really expressing them, as well as saying 'no don't do this'. To me it doesn't seem like a bad or in realistic reaction at all.

I think the "I care about Sam. I care about Jack." is a way of him saying that I know the difference what I feel for them and what I feel for you. Fans have accepted for years that Cas is in love with Dean and Dean is essentially unsure of how to deal with that because he isn't gay or bi, but recognizes that he feels a different kind of Love for Cas than anyone else. People also accepted that around the time Jensen got married to his wife, his hookups and on-screen kisses noticeably stopped out of respect for his wishes to respect his marriage.
What I hate the most about this show is that, actors and writers during panel shows, and online, just kept shi****g on their viewers who were asking about a potential romantic relationship between Dean and Cas. Mocking them, saying they’re seeing things that aren’t there, implying we, the gays, want to see homosexuality everywhere and are pushing it down everyone’s throat. At least it really felt like this and like it had this kind of tone to me. It was aggressive and honestly just hurtful, especially when seeing the reactions from a massive part of the fandom, who were straight and couldn’t accept or even fathom the mere idea of main characters having a same sex love interest. Because they’re aren’t enough straight representation am I right ? ... Like really? The hypocrisy. The number of hints about gay love and sex in the show is staggering. The innuendos, the looks, the gay jokes, the sometimes even direct references to diverse areas of the fandom, etc. It’s everywhere. Like the writers definitely knew about all this. The actors too. And they milked the sh** out of it for viewers and money. Because although we, the gays, are not good enough to have a gay relationship on a major TV show, we’re still not despicable enough for them to not be considered as a major source of income to be exploited. Like the whole gay subtext is not even subtle. And then they acted all shocked and defensive about people speculating about Destiel... I mean the nerves. The bad faith. The latent homophobia. Like check the fricking bloopers and gag reels. Even those are gay as sh** and filled with bromance/gay sexual tension vibes ! They can’t tell us they didn’t do it, at least partially, on purpose to keep an audience starving for representation engaged. Finally sort of addressing it ten years later is lazy and too little too late. They’re just playing a J.K. Rowling and trying to be seen like they were woke af with hindsight. Spoiler : they’re not.
For me it was the episode where they had the fourth-wall breaking SPN play that had destiel. They knew and it was a joke. My gay ass doesn't have time for that
I was skeptical about where they were going for many seasons, and the writing had been going downhill imo since season 7 or 8... and then s12 happened and they had like 4 opportunities in Cas's funeral episode to have Dean realize he was in love with him and kiss him goodbye or yell at Chuck for taking Cas from him... and they did NOTHING WITH IT! After what happened with Sherlock, I was like "Oh fuck no, ain't no one got time for more queerbating bs if y'all gonna pull this shit on us." -_-

Castiel has already said I love you. This is a romantic I love you, that’s why he says “I want what I can’t have”. Dean is what he wants but he can’t him or believes he can’t have him because castiel doesn’t think dean will feel the same.

Castiel can't just have Joe Smoe as his vessel without it a) being in the right bloodline and b) having the person choose to become an angelic vessel. And if I am remembering correctly Claire did have a stint as Castiel's vessel during the Jimmy Novak is back episode. It's been a couple years since I've been in the SPN fandom.
Claire being a vessel is one thing. Like that'd be her choice. But endgame Destiel with Claire as a vessel is gross for so many reasons.
It's been theorized for many years that Claire may become Castiel's "permanent" vessel, or even a temporary one like a few episodes, but in the current canon, I doubt that Claire would be chill with that or that'd they pull that stunt in the last two episodes. Adding Destiel into that mix would be a disservice to all characters involved.

The empty isn't super Hell. Its literally what it's name suggests, empty. It's where angels and demons go when they die and sleep forever. Also, Cas is neither gay nor straight since the character is neither male or female. Cas is an angel and doesnt have a gender. The character of Dean is straight. That is whats canon. It would be wrong to change it now just for the sake of being pc. Also Jensen Ackles isn't homophobic. He is very supportive of his gay aunt and if I was him I would be tired of fans of pushing something on my character that he just wasn't.

At first I thought Jensen's acting was really off, with Misha acting his heart out and Dean looking like 😐. But after mulling it over, I think the editing was the problem. Jensen's good with nuanced emotion. The way they block in the scene is amateurly back-and-forth in a way that is unusual for other Destiel moments that often have them on screen at the same time - to show the two in relation to each other, in close quarters and moving with each other. This scene was shot and edited in a way that cancelled out the chemistry these two have with each other. The first time within the confession we see them on screen together (I think) is when Dean turns around to see the black goo thing appear behind him. There is so little intimacy portrayed in this scene that it fails to deliver true romantic tension.

THE THING IS the most tension between Cas and Dean was in those early seasons.
At this point in the show we've gotten the same confession about a hundred other times that were just as emotionally poignant. Dean grieves for Cas, Cas comes back to save him, and then they get emotionally distant again because the Winchesters do not understand communication.
Cas has basically moved on at this point, in that "I will always love you but have enough self respect to admit I deserve better" way. It's tragic, really. Jack, his surrogate son, is more important to him than Dean now. Their love for each other reciprocated and justified and Jack would never do what Dean has done to Cas.
Basically what I'm trying to say is Cas gave up on destiel 2 seasons ago and im mad this is where they took it.

Exactly. I stopped shipping Destiel in canon context because they are not healthy in the last few season, and I can't see much redemption either without having to change up Dean how he is completely. I think Deans 'brokeness' and moral ambuigity is worth to be there on itself (over Destiel) so I don't demand for this to change.
But also, Castiel was really, really depressed and I've grown so angry about how he was used by the Winchesters and what they did with the character... and also what they did with Dean and Sam, I'm not really invested anymore. But Destiel is tragic in canon. So tragic that I just want them to live their own lives apart from each other and find happiness. It's just too sad; what basically happened, assuming Destiel, is that Dean was such a coward about his feelings and had so much internalized homophobia that he began to let it out on Cas, who suffered as a result. That's some real life shit tbh

regarding Dean’s silence, people who have watched the show know that Dean in general doesn’t usually talk about his emotions very openly. he keeps things bottled up and only lets them out when he’s alone (hence why he cried at the end). when Cas confessed Dean’s “don’t do this Cas” meant don’t sacrifice yourself again. this isn’t the first time he has seen Cas die, Cas has died a total of 6 times and it never gets easier for Dean. with everyone that happens ofc he’s going to be shocked, Dean has always had a problem with his self hatred, hearing someone actually say that they love him on a romantic level was a huge shock for him. if Cas wasn’t about to die i would say dean would probably runaway and think about his feelings for Cas and then reveal them to him but there wasn’t time for him here so he just couldn’t say anything.
Yeah I'm thinking the same, Dean is character who processing emotions very slowly and Cas's confession was just overwhelming for him. Cas wanted to say so much to Dean in that one moment because he knew he will never see him again. There is not only love confession. When he said "I know how you see yourself, Dean" Cas said everything Dean needed to hear like: you are not broken, anger is not who you are, everything you are doing is for love. He even mention Dean's father, how he was raising Sam from a child, fighting for this world. Cas literally said "you are the most caring, selfless human being" It was not just the "I love you" sentence all that speech was so full of love no one probably shown Dean so much love before. I think in another situation, without all that "he's gonna die" stuff, Dean's reation would not be so much different, I think he would just stand still with tears in his eyes, moving his lips soundless until Cas began to back away and Dean would stop him. It's not only about writers, characters are also actors, fans and a lot of things, there is also a story and in story, let's remember, Dean was never with a man (probably never even kissed one) so even If he loved Cas back, there was also: he is in male vessel (It's nothing to do with homophobia, just coming out even to yourself is not always easy), he is an angel (let's remember it was also some kind of issue), he is my best friend for years (show me a person who find that situation simple), he is about to die again but this time for real... If Dean would just say "I love you too" It would be kinda unrealistic and out of character.
Still I hope in heaven they are cuddling on the couch, eating bacon and watching old western movies (and having great sex~)

Like if they didn't want to make Dean act out of character, they could have had this confession happen way earlier in the season or show so that Dean had actual time to figure out his feelings or respond in a meaningful way, maybe even have him grow more comfortable with expressing them or coming to terms with liking men specifically Castiel. Instead they gave us a confession in the literal second to last episode and had the character confessing die and never return. That is bad writing and screwing over the community they are supposedly trying to represent no matter how you look at it. Like don't write a love confession of long shipped characters at the literal end of a show, but especially do not do this if one of the characters is canonically bad at expressing their feelings. Because then you get one person pouring their heart and the other looking like 🗿

You guys deserve better as fans.
That wouldn't even make any sense. Dean and Cas have been besties for years and years. There's no reason that saying "I love you" to Dean in a platonic context would be Castiel's *happiest* moment when their platonic love for each other has been established throughout the past decade. You might as well have his happy come from a hamburger for all the emotional payoff that would give. Not saying that's not what there gonna do, though, cuz it obviously is.

He says "I cared about Sam, I cared about Jack (his adopted son just btw), **but** I cared about the whole WORLD (when he disobeyed Heaven and joined Dean in saving it) BECAUSE OF YOU Dean." Loving Dean is what taught him how to care about anyone. It changed his fundamental nature and enabled him to exert free will, something angels aren't supposed to be able to do.

It's clear that it's romantic because of the line where Castiel says he knows he can't have what he wants + the script of the scene describing that Dean's "unable to reciprocate" (which if this was on a friendship level, would make zero sense) BUT at the same time, they did this scene in a way where general public doesn't have to necessarily pick up on the romantic vibe and could just say they're really good friends. I guess, as you said, we're gonna see if it's gonna be EXPLICITLY stated that Castiel feels/felt something romantic towards Dean in the remaining two episodes.
It's explicit though. Yes, people can skip the "want but can't have" line if they want, but they can't find a platonic explanation for it.

In discussions for next episode, majority of people think that it was just brotherly cause it can be read that way if you're not paying attention to every single word and sentence. It wasn't clear enough, Castiel could have just said "I'm in love with you" instead of "I love you" to make it bold, but they didn't do it for a reason.

My personal interpretation for the scene is that the reason dean was being so quiet was because it was a lot to process in the moment

In three minutes, his best friend told him there was a way out if the trap Dean thinks they put them in, find out that to save Jack Cas had to make a deal, hear all those beautiful things about himself, being told that he was the reason Cas changed, and to be told Cas lives him, all while processing that this was also goodbye speech. Who wouldn't be dumbfounded like that

I mean, I'm a lot less repressed than Dean, and I never had to absorb a similar amount of information in very little time while I was about to die, but let me tell you, when my best friend told me she found me cute (as in, "I think we should be girlfriends") I was dumbfounded and didn't know what to answer. It took me days to understand that she was actually propositioning me. Dean isn't "stone-faced" or anything, he's just completely stunned because there was so much to process, and also you never expect your best friend to tell you "btw I'm in love with you."

As someone who’s been watching this show consistently for a couple of years now... Deans facial expression make sense. All in one day: he failed to kill god and the darkness, everyone he knows is dying, he was so consumed with anger he was willing to sacrifice Jack, he pulled a gun on his own brother, death is trying to kill him and Cas, he all of a sudden learns that Cas made a deal so he’ll die when he’s truly happy, and then cas confesses his love for Dean and dies a couple of seconds after. Jensen did a wonderful job acting shocked and in disbelief

"Dean can't reciprocate" can mean different things in this scene. It can mean he doesn't have time to reciprocate. It could mean Dean.exe is rebooting because he is overwhelmed with death and hell knocking on the door and Cas confessing his love and he can't get words out. It could mean Cas pushes him away before there is time. Legitimately, we won't know what this means until the last episodes. Did he say, "Cas I dont see you that way"? No. He said "Cas (looks like he's about to say "Cas I.." before he's interrupted) and basically pleaded for Cas not to sacrifice himself.
I'm pretty sure Misha has been pushing hard for Destiel to become canon for ages.

i think the thing that's so funny about this is that every single person i've seen talking about it (and myself!) are people who used to be into spn but went off it YEARS ago, for a variety of reasons but a lot of people because "well, they're just gonna queerbait". so by doing this...thing...all they've achieved is making a bunch of people who don't care about the show any more come back, see this bizarre scene, and go "wow! this is way worse than it just being queerbaity forever!" and it's...the end of the show? incredible.

I'm one of those people. I stopped watching circa season 10, came back for a few episodes between then and now, (300th one, the one where Dean is Michael...), I literally don't see what the big deal is. Supernatural has always been that problematic show what queerbaited and killed your fave female character. And around S9 or 10 it got very clear that there would be no canon destiel. And now we got canon destiel that basically lasted for who knows how long on Cas' part. It was bittersweet but it's better than nothing. Castiel loves Dean! Take the W everyone!
My prediction is that Dean is going to friendzone him, but in the end, sacrifising himself to save everyone who died in this episode, including Castiel. So there will be enough room to speculate if he just wasn't ready to openly accept it.

Bruh, I personally started watching 10 seasons of the show for Destiel but..when I saw just how much the creators and actors were humiliating the destiel fandom..i decided to stop watching it. I watched the scene in Spanish, Castiel said "te amo", a phrase used to confess romantic love. We use the words "te quiero" when we mean platonic love.

Now, I've recently watched the movie "The Old Guard" (recently released in Netflix, this year) and it's the most beautiful example a movie that goes totally against this horrible trope! Some spoilers, but the MAIN (yeah, not the side one) romantic relationship of the movie are two badass, romantic, immortal, yes IMMORTAL, gays who have loved each other for centuries and it has a scene where one of them declares their love in front of homophobes, and let me say that's singlehandedly THE most beautiful romantic scene I've seen in my life!! Also, Charlize Theron is the boss of the group of immortals who fight for humanitarian causes and she carries an axe around, so also a win for us lesbians. I recommend it with my whole heart, love, gayness and being!!!

When I first found out, I was so upset and on the verge of crying because of the 12 years of queerbaiting, but now, everything is hilarious and tumblr is my favorite thing ever.
I think we've also got to keep in mind that, past S5, this show has been such a random, assorted amalgamation of different writers' ideas, with little to no attention paid to narrative/thematic/character development cohesion. They introduce plot elements which randomly become important or get ignored. The writing has always felt like writers on their own writing islands.
So the fact that this confession had no buildup within the season? It's not that out of touch with the general lack of narrative vision going on
fun fact: in the spanish version you can hear Dean's character respond "y yo a ti" to Cas' "i love you", Dean says (translated) "and i you"!!! (just found out today on tumblr, because one of my mutuals was sharing lots of posts about it.)

Yeah, problem is that Castiel is an angel. Him saying that is just showing how he is different from the other characters. The lore makes that technique not work. Of course Cas loves everyone...he’s a flipping angel.
Even if this is confirmed in show in the final episodes, confirming characters to be gay after 15 years of on and off is still not a great look. A get it in kids shows or shorter shows like she-ra and legend of korra, but there is no doubt that the creators could have made destiel canon years ago if they actually cared to have solid representation.
The difference is that catradora had actual romantic tension that had been built up for 5 seasons, it was written into their backstories and the creator of shera had their relationship planned since the first season. destiel was just rushed and sad.

The script for that scene indicated Dean is “stunned, confused, shocked.” So with that direction, Jensen played the scene exactly as scripted and should get no hate. Any hate is for the writers.
Agree. Dean was not just processing 'I love you' in that split second. He had to process: the danger of Billy at the door, Cas telling him about the deal he made last season , Cas dying AND Cas saying I love you - all this without words in a split second. Dean's reaction was not just re: I love you. If this scene was intended as romantic admission then it should have either been placed in the episode differently or they give Dean more time or less things to process in a split second. In short I cannot fault Jensen's acting in this - I think the problem is the writing and some of the editing.
I think a majority of the hate towards this scene does come from people who haven't seen the show before or who dropped it years ago etc. I appreciate Rowan for at least watching the whole episode but I'll argue that even that is definitely not enough context to really get what they were going for in this scene, especially since the episode doesn't really feature Dean and Cas scenes until the end. Dean, fundamentally, is a guy who buries his emotions, shrugs them off, and refuses to let himself feel too outwardly or obviously to others in his life. He shows love in many ways, but in subtle ways, like making Cas a mixtape or making sure Sam is comfortable. He is barely ever the type to do what Cas does in this episode, who so boldly and upfrontly admit and confess how he's feelings (not just in regards to love but with *anything* too 'deep' for him: grief, trauma, regret, anxiety, his suicidal tendencies, etc). A good episode to watch would be 15x09, written by the same writer of 15x18, where Dean and Cas get separated in Purgatory and, in a moment of vulnerability, Dean is alone and prays to Cas in a very introspective monologue about his feelings and his emotional issues. (In fact, Dean's emotional and anger issues have been a defining trait of his, and especially one that they've very intentionally amplified this season as he's gotten more and more manipulated. Part of the intention of Cas' speech is to remind Dean of who he is besides his anger and rage.) It was only when Dean was alone, and when he didn't even know if Cas could hear him, that he could even begin to open up about the way he feels. He is the type of character who never knows how to process his emotions immediately, it can take him a couple scenes, or the whole season (on avg. it's a few episodes) before he really can be upfront with the way he feels about something. As you can see in the last scene of the episode, Dean is just sitting alone by himself, probably regretting all the things he didn't get to say, since he didn't even get a chance to say goodbye. And that's another thing about this scene, it is so fleeting for Dean. One moment, he's in a predicament with his ride-or-die, and 5 minutes later, Cas has sacrificed himself (with no prior discussion), never to be seen again. So the quote from the script, "stunned, confused, shocked" is not just directed at Cas' love confession. In fact, despite it being the main focus of everyone's thinkpieces this week, I'd say that the writers were coming at this scene from a 'death-first, monologue-second' approach in terms of how they prioritised the significance of the scene. They knew they had to kill Cas this season because it had been set up, and they secondarily decided to give him a nice, encompassing, full-circle speech to sum up: his character, how he's grown over the seasons, and saying goodbye to the most important person to him. To Dean, I imagine it would be very in character for him to be looking the way he does because he's literally being told for the first time that, not only has his friend made this deal for his life, but also that he's taking it up immediately and that he's about to die in front of him. *That* would be where a majority of the shock comes from. That's why Dean's first question is to be asking "why does this sound like a goodbye", because that's probably the main part for him to be wrapping his mind around. It's not gonna take Dean a couple hours before he really thinks back on what Castiel was telling him and understands everything he was told. This is why, fascinating though it is, I don't think it's entirely productive to be viewing this scene or episode through a queer lens, because that's not the primary angle that the writers are thinking about this scene. Also, just personally, as a queer guy, I'd never really identified with these two as some form of gay representation, since I don't think the writers or actors ever presented that intentionally, and that most of destiel's existence comes from a queer projection onto the show by its fans. I mostly just took it in the same way I view Dean's relationship with Sam, that it's a very strong, non-sexual love between them all. (I much prefer to watch Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham's relationship for my gay subtext content since that show is *actually* intentionally coded to be very gay, and is created by a gay man/written by a lgbt group of writers, no less). But, hey, I did appreciate the words "I love you" being spoken in that scene. As I said, romantic or not, that's a love that has always been there, and it was a good way to send off the character. I just really refute anyone saying that it was a "one-sided confession" or that Dean doesn't feel anything, or that Jensen is somehow all-of-a-sudden discriminatory because his face wasn't teary-eyed enough for some people.

I keep seeing people spitting out hatred or frustration over this one scene. But if people are seeing just one scene out of context, with no knowledge of everything else that has been happening in the show, they can't claim to understand everything that was happening in that scene. Some of us were deeply affected on a personal level by not only that scene, but everything in the show that led up to. Without intentionally paraphrasing Castiel, I have to say I was changed for the better by this show (and the scene in question, in particular), and no one will ever be able to take that away from me.

One can easily chalk Jensen's reaction as being canon to Dean's character-Dean is the emobidment of "big tough guy with heart of gold" and hates getting overly emotional especially in front of other people. He's been through some shit. Makes sense. So for someone he's been so close with his entire life, telling him they love him, it would kind be like a "wtf how to do react" moment for Dean. Dude has the emotional range of a teaspoon. Not saying he doesn't have ANY but....like I said. He's that typical MANLY MAN who wouldn't want to admit to anyone much less himself of being emotionally vulnerable.

I really wasn't in the fandom but one of the "Jensen is homophobic" things looks like it came from a fan bringing along a Meta Essay titled "Spoiler Alert: Dean Winchester is Bisexual" to a signing and Jensen put a question mark next to the title and then just wrote "No." and then signed his name. (Apparently Misha then crossed out the No and wrote Yes is sparkly silver pen so...)

To be fair, Jensen as an actor is allowed to have boundaries as to what kinds of scenes he does and doesn't want to play. When he took the job in 2005, there was no hint that any kind of same-sex relationship was in the offing. It's not like Aml Ameen taking the role of Capheus in 'Sense8' and then being shocked that some homoerotic scenes might have to be performed. Did he not pay attention to the series concept?
He can absolutely have boundaries and I don't have any issue with an actor having those stipulated, but having an issue with just the idea is what I found uncomfortable. The signing thing seemed sort of aggressive about it, that's just a fan asking for something to be signed you could just sign it and move on. Plus with the queerbait-y stuff in the show - if he's uncomfortable with that kind of relationship in the role don't hint that it "could" happen if you know it won't for whatever reason, y'know? Like I said though I'm an outsider looking in so I don't know all of the stuff that happened.

The thing no one who doesn’t watch the show is realizing is that they have been like. antagonistic with each other ALL SEASON. In the previous episode Dean was advocating for Jack (who is Castiel’s adopted son basically) to die. Like even if they hadn’t done it in the most homophobic way possible it would’ve been bad. “I know like 12 hours ago you wanted to kill my son, but I’m in love with you.”
I stopped watching in maybe Season 8 or early Season 9, so I definitely didn’t know about this and it makes it even worse somehow, from any perspective. They could have ended it 6 seasons ago and have it be somewhat natural, because that’s when their chemistry was at its finest, but because they’ve stretched this out so long and put so much conflict between them, it just doesn’t seem to flow. From what I’ve heard, Dean doesn’t even seem to deserve Cas’s loyalty anymore, and that hurts.
I buy he cares about him, but love, after all that bitter till really dramatic exes subtexts , this season too, yes its not justied, even with misha, one of the reasons to still watch with jack, they really hae a touching well acted relationship, but romance there, that makes no sense.

One of the worst thing with this (because oh boy the list is as long as Crowley's from S7EP23), is that all along, so for years, they've been *DENYING* and *CALLING FANS CRAZY* for seeing more than just a friendship in Destiel, and *only now* they're doing this ? I think it's important to note that, and there have been theories, there may be some level of sheer shock on Dean's part and possible internalised homophobia. There's one thing to be an ally but it's another to actually experience these feelings yourself especially given the Winchester's background. He *could* be reciprocating those feelings for while no, he didn't respond, I personally wouldn't know how to respond if my best friend confessed that she was going to die and sacrifice herself because she loved me. It's a sheer shock factor. Ofc it may be entirely platonic and we should be prepared for that but if it's just queer beating and (quite frankly, homophobic if we read into it properly) then the writers won't even be forgiven.
Yeah, I don't actively follow the series, but it's weird to me that so many people go first to bad acting or jensen/dean being homophobic before they go to shock. Also that a lot of people reduce it to "this is how dean reacts when cas says he loves him" like if my crush said that they were going to die as soon as they said something that made them truely happy and then told me they loved me. I would be mostly in shock and have a pretty similar reaction. having strong conflicting emotions and not really expressing them, as well as saying 'no don't do this'. To me it doesn't seem like a bad or in realistic reaction at all.

They have been through so much shit. 15 years of killing and fighting monsters and demons....but a love confession is the one thing that makes Dean freeze up... I don't believe it. People want to chop it up to shock or whatever. I don't buy that.
I think the "I care about Sam. I care about Jack." is a way of him saying that I know the difference what I feel for them and what I feel for you. Fans have accepted for years that Cas is in love with Dean and Dean is essentially unsure of how to deal with that because he isn't gay or bi, but recognizes that he feels a different kind of Love for Cas than anyone else.
People also accepted that around the time Jensen got married to his wife, his hookups and on-screen kisses noticeably stopped out of respect for his wishes to respect his marriage.
What I hate the most about this show is that, actors and writers during panel shows, and online, just kept shi****g on their viewers who were asking about a potential romantic relationship between Dean and Cas.
Mocking them, saying they’re seeing things that aren’t there, implying we, the gays, want to see homosexuality everywhere and are pushing it down everyone’s throat.
At least it really felt like this and like it had this kind of tone to me.
It was aggressive and honestly just hurtful, especially when seeing the reactions from a massive part of the fandom, who were straight and couldn’t accept or even fathom the mere idea of main characters having a same sex love interest.

Like really? The hypocrisy. The number of hints about gay love and sex in the show is staggering.
The innuendos, the looks, the gay jokes, the sometimes even direct references to diverse areas of the fandom, etc. It’s everywhere.
Like the writers definitely knew about all this. The actors too. And they milked the sh** out of it for viewers and money. Because although we, the gays, are not good enough to have a gay relationship on a major TV show, we’re still not despicable enough for them to not be considered as a major source of income to be exploited.
Like the whole gay subtext is not even subtle.
And then they acted all shocked and defensive about people speculating about Destiel... I mean the nerves. The bad faith. The latent homophobia.
Like check the fricking bloopers and gag reels. Even those are gay as sh** and filled with bromance/gay sexual tension vibes !
They can’t tell us they didn’t do it, at least partially, on purpose to keep an audience starving for representation engaged.
Finally sort of addressing it ten years later is lazy and too little too late. They’re just playing a J.K. Rowling and trying to be seen like they were woke af with hindsight.

I was skeptical about where they were going for many seasons, and the writing had been going downhill imo since season 7 or 8... and then s12 happened and they had like 4 opportunities in Cas's funeral episode to have Dean realize he was in love with him and kiss him goodbye or yell at Chuck for taking Cas from him... and they did NOTHING WITH IT! After what happened with Sherlock, I was like "Oh fuck no, ain't no one got time for more queerbating bs if y'all gonna pull this shit on us." -_-
