  • If your engine is making a noisy 'tappety' sound, it might be time to check and adjust the valve clearances. Haynes manual recommends to check every 20,000 miles or 12months. This maintenance is well overdue for my engine! In this video I run through two different methods for checking and adjusting the clearances on my MK5 Ford Transit 2.5DI engine. I will be following the Haynes manual method and running through another method, the 'rocking' method. In the process, I also replace my leaking rocker cover gasket.
    In my opinion the rocking method is much easier to follow as all the valves can be adjusted with only 4 rotations of the crankshaft, whereas the Haynes method requires lots of tweaking to get the valves into the right positions. Please feel free to share your opinions and experiences below. It would be good to know for next time which is the most accurate method for adjusting.
    Feel free to use this video as a guide for carrying out the job yourself.
    Thanks for watching, please don't forget to like and subscribe :)

    Purrrring beautifully,top job mate, brilliant. Up & down the country you'd of seen many a motorist on his driveway doing this type of regular maintenance 40 odd years ago so its good to see that with these vans you can still do so much of the maintenance on the driveway instead of farming it out to a garage.
    Man & machine in perfect harmony.

    Usually only gets done after the pushrods get hammered straight after a timing belt failure! 😂
    That rocking method's a good tip - will do that the next time I have the rocker cover off.

    great video pal,never seen the "rocking method" before,ive always followed the Haynes method,sounds a lot quieter,,you should of done the leak off mod while you had the banana off,it would of given you better access

      @TurnersWorkshop97  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks mate, it’s something I came across online and took me a while to get my head around it. I checked the clearances on both methods and they are close enough. As you’re essentially just putting each piston at TDC and setting the clearances in the rocking method. I will be taking the banana off again to clean anyway. Got some leak off pipe recently so that will be another job. Thanks for your comment 👍🏼 😁

    quick question..do you not have to find tdc on the compression stroke with both of these methods,ive heard in other forums you have to do this but noting is mentioned in the haynes manual

    • @TurnersWorkshop97
      @TurnersWorkshop97  2 роки тому

      Yes that’s correct, you find TCD (just before the power stroke) for each cylinder and adjust the valve clearances accordingly. Both methods just help find the engines TDC positions 😁 the Haynes manual doesn’t really explain it just gives the method 👍🏼

    Hi Turner. Thanks for posting this high quality content! I have a smaller version of your van. And was wondering did this help with noise on the freeway? Say cruizing at 60mph or so. The noise of my engine can be too much sometimes.

    • @TurnersWorkshop97
      @TurnersWorkshop97  Рік тому

      Hello mate, It will definitely make it less tappety sounding if the engine is out of adjustment. Other things you could try: use 10w40 oil if you’re currently using 5w30. Slightly thicker oil should make it slightly quieter. Research using mineral 2stroke oil in the fuel as this will help lubricate the pump and is said to make it quieter (only if you have a Bosch pump). Haven’t tried it yet so might make a video about it. Sound deadening the floor pan makes a big difference, possibly the engine bay as well. Other than that, earplugs😆

      @@TurnersWorkshop97 thanks! Have tried some of them, will see how far can this go. Initially injector cleaners and sound proofing did help a lot. But still as one of my friends put it 'when the engineers finished the job, where they listening to this and thought "this is fine" ' :D yet this is only 60-70mph. Lower speeds on b-roads are very pleasant and the sound/engine is even enjoyable

      I can check for you tomorrow, I put a link to the manifold gasket in my manifold cleaning video. You could possibly reuse the gasket if it’s in ok condition, but maybe put a very light smear of hylomar on each side to reseal it. You could make one from gasket paper or cardboard using the old one as a template 👍🏼 how come you don’t have the manifold bolts?

      @@TurnersWorkshop97 just a tip as well, i see you still have the foam sound proofing in from factory, it soaks up water and holds it against the metal causing rust. Caused a a hole behind each of my wings which in turn caused water to get into my footwell. Apparently its a common issue so might be worth checking that out :)
