    OMG I feel so stupid. I've been thinking of how I could stiffen up the syphon to get at the bottom of my shrimp tank better, and all I could think of was a ruler. And I've heard you say something about chopsticks in other videos. I just didn't realize what you were using it for until now. What a fab idea thank you so much!

    Rachael thanks so much! I've been looking at all this extra wildlife in my shrimp tank for 2 weeks now wondering how I could siphon my tank without disturbing the shrimp. I first added three tiny guppy fry to go after the daphnia, copepods, and other things I have no idea what they are. Now I have eight micro pleco bristlenose fry in there tackling the algae. Now I know these guys can't all stay but right now they are tiny. But yesterday I saw a red worm in my filter sponge like you see in wild fish!!! How did THAT nasty thing get there?? The dried leaves I've been feeding them?? Anyway I'm going to try this. Wish me luck! Also I would like to order some Indian almond leaves from you and a few shrimp as well. Right now I have juvenile red cherry shrimp. The females starting moving eggs up into the saddle area over the last week or so. It won't be long now. Can I mix the crystal reds with them or would it be better to get yellow?

    • @megan-io7sq
      @megan-io7sq 6 років тому

      Valerie Storm crystal reds would keep a very bright red shrimp colony but the yellow would interbreed. either way you’ll get some wild type shrimp, but it is all preference

    Do you think that smaller and more regular water changes would be better for keeping shrimp in a smaller tank?

  • @Trixieandthejumpingfleas
    @Trixieandthejumpingfleas 5 років тому

    Rachel, what percentage (and how often) would you change a tank with Caridina, chili rasboras (so more bioload, I have a dozen right now), that's heavily planted and being dosed ferts (thrive S). I want to make sure nutrients don't build up with too small water changes but don't want them to be too big and affect the shrimp. I'm not sure where the happy medium lies.

  • @Loafy23
    @Loafy23 8 років тому +1

    +Rachel O'leary That's a beautiful little tank. I'm honestly a bit heartbroken right now though, Rachel. I live in OH now and I'm setting up my first tank here. I'd intended to do a shrimp (2-3 species that won't hybridize) and nano fish tank with this Oceanic 33g Hex I picked up second hand. Unfortunately the local water is horrible with a high PH of 8.2, a KH of only 3.5-4 degrees, and a GH around 7 degrees. Other than the GH the rest is just not going to work but for an extremely narrow selection of animals. I really want to do the tank as I intended but the only solution I can see is getting an RO unit, remineralizing and buffering manually. Am I wrong here? What would you suggest? Maybe you could work this into a video for your channel to help other keepers in a similar situation.
    Keep up the good work, your videos are getting better and better! :)

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  8 років тому +1

      +Sarkazmo Loafy You could use aquasoil, or one of the substrates that pulls out hardness, but you would want to do small, frequent water changes rather than larger ones to prevent shifts in parameters. RO is another good choice, or rainwater if you are not in a particularly industrial area.

    • @Loafy23
      @Loafy23 8 років тому

      Unfortunately, Rachel, I am in a small apartment and an industrial area so rainwater is right out. Being a Hex tank the area of the bottom is so small compared to rectangular tank of the same gallonage. I think that would limit Aquasoil's absorption and buffering ability. It still looks like I'm going to have to go RO. At least it's a lot cheaper to do now than it used to be. Thanks for your input, Rachel, I appreciate and value your input and experience.

    That colander tip is marvelous; I'm shocked I never thought of it! In an earlier video, you mentioned using the plop and drop method for fish: match temp, then pour them into a net to add to the tank -- no drip. Is this what you do for your shrimp, too?

    Love the vacuum idea. My one problem is adding water back in. The shrimp seem to be very sensitive to water changes, and I occasionally still get a death after a water change. I use RO water and remineralize it the same way each time, add a few drops of prime, and even warm it up to the tank's parameters before adding it in. Does anyone else still see this from time to time? Are some shrimp just that sensitive?

  • @yenxion1713
    @yenxion1713 8 років тому

    Alright I will keep this one short. I would love to try shrimp keeping along side my main tank. It would be simply a small 2.5-gallon tank to keep on my desk. I would use artificial plants and simple aquarium gravel. I would first cycle it with Neon Tetras and then introduce shrimp when I have a fully nitrogen cycled tank as I am aware they are delicate. I would not use live plants. Would this setup work?? and how often would it need cleaning??

    • @RachelOLeary

    o,Rachael last Monday I woke and my shrimp thank was empty , very sad day
    I've worked very hard and was finally seeing some results now I'm back to square one
    I did manage to save some and most the plants.The tank is over 40 years old.
    any way do you think seachem ferts are safe for shrimp ? I'm definitely leaning away from excel
    because it kills algee and possibly my little shrimp

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  8 років тому

      +Damion Markham afaik, they are safe, but dosing ferts always relies heavily on a good water change routine so that you don't have those tds climbing through the roof, which can be pretty deadly to shrimp.

    • @OriginalMindTrick
      @OriginalMindTrick 8 років тому

      I've even seen the most high tech carpenting plants like HC Cuba and glosso make a lovely thick carpet in a low tech (dirt) tank. You can't have any fast growing stem plants sucking up all the CO2 at the same time though as these plants are very picky about CO2 and you need to keep your eyes on the tank constantly and make adjustment to avoid algae.
      It's also best to dry start such a tank.
      Search on google for "Small Planted Tanks for Pet Shrimp - Bookmasters" for an example. Not for beginners.
      For beginners is species like E tenellus, Sagittaria subulata and C Parva better choices.

    Hi Rachel, my shrimps body is cloudy and i dont know how to help the shrimp by clearing it up. Every single batch i buy the shrimp either dies or if i do take notice i can see that the shrimps body goes cloudy.

    Ive heard as long as i can get 1 berried female that 1batch and onwards thats born in my tank will be the survivor. Is that true?

    What algae eaters would you suggest for my dirt and sand planted tank for shrimp?

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  8 років тому

      +Omar K Johnson Possiblly a nerite snail, if iti s flat type algae you are dealing with. If its filamentous algae, probably amano shrimp.

    if your routine is like 15% to 20% every weekend, would you need to worry about it? the holes is a harder tube that can get into the subtrate

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  8 років тому

      depends on who you talk to. Personally,, I cannot stand planaria, detritus worms, or excess bladder snails- all of which are common in a shrimp tank because they eat so inefficiently and make a bit of a mess.

    • @mikeyhung2848
      @mikeyhung2848 8 років тому

      Is there anything that can help with that in a community tank ? That could possibly keep up after the shrimp to reduce the chances ?

    no heater in there. ? is there a preferred ph level. ?

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  8 років тому

      +Dee From Brooklyn I don't use heaters except for on Hypancistrus, Discus, or Cardinal tetras. I use soil that softens my water in this tank to make it very soft, though I have not actually measured the pH. If I had to guess based on the hardness, I would say its around 6ish. The shrimp in there prefer soft, cool water: ua-cam.com/video/MJ-Iz3_JB38/v-deo.html

      Not if you are dosing fertilizer, as it will remove them. I tend to keep things VERY simple in my fish room and use almost exclusively various sponge filtration types.

    • @RachelOLeary

      +Guilherme Carvalho I rarely supplement the shrimp in this tank, but when I do I generally use pellets. I will have to measure the tank, for the life of me I cannot recall even how many gallons it holds. It sat around for years before I did something with it.
